Not intended as any slight to KC, but tough to think even she’ll ever have the variety of successes across so many genres as LR. (For example, she likely won’t record the top selling non-English album ever sold the US music history, sell millions of standards/jazz albums, etc,.) Realize different eras and rock was much more popular in LR heyday vs now. LR was most commercially successful female artist (of all genres) of 1970s, Tony nominated Broadway artist, first female to sell out massive stadium tours, etc. Overall, hard to convey how big of a deal she’s been in history of female singers/music overall.

I guess you dismiss all the current great opera voices and classical musicians because they are doing covers (of 300 to 400 year old songs!). Linda had a gorgeous voice, incredible range, super control, and she still managed to rock it and put on crowd-pleasing shows to packed stadiums. She could sing at the highest level in many genres, including rock, country, Latin, and in plays. The world lost a jewel of a singer when Parkinsons sidelined her. She deserves all the accolades she received, including ten Grammys, an Emmy, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and so much more. Her pedestal is not fake, your standard of writing is what's fake. She's a singer, not a writer. The best singers on earth (opera) don't write anything.
That guy wailing on the congas is none other than Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, one of the best guitarists around. He was with the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan on many of their hits. The guy is a flat out chilling flame thrower, wherever he is. He's versatile!

Besides being the Queen of Rock for the decade, she has recorded country, Latin, light opera, big band classics, appeared in Broadway musicals, and won virtually every award and accolade in music, often multiple times. Obviously, her catalog is a deep one. I think it's safe to say it started with "Different Drum". I know I was hooked immediately.
She was a cultural icon. When she donned an athletic jacket and shorts along with roller skates for her "Back in the USA" album she created a fad in roller skating from a little known activity along the California coast
Being the youngest kid in my family at the time I had a bedtime, but I would always sneak up and watch Midnight Special with my older brother. He never ratted me out either.
Linda has Parkinson's Disease disease and can no longer sing but she left quite a legacy of music. I recently watched the documentary about her here on TH-cam called "Linda Ronstadt:The Sound Of My Voice" and it's very good.
Sorry to inform you, but I just learned from a commenter that she was re- diagnosed with a more severe/insidious brain disease known as PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy). It’s so sad, it makes life hell - my Mom had it and I know too much about it. Life can be so cruel to some who don’t deserve it.

She is part Mexican, and part German, so she sings effortlessly in Spanish. She can also speak German, English, & Spanish; she was raised with all three. 😊 She was a hero of mine; I used to try to sing along with her ‼️💜🦋 It was HARD‼️ 🤣🤣🤣
Her background group originally was the Eagles. When they decided to go out on their own, she was very encouraging to them! I’ve IG my favorite songs was “Desperado”, written by Don Henley, the drummer for the Eagles. Her most haunting song was “Ghost Train”. Her big hits were numerous! Lots of top ten hits. Another biggy was “Blue Bayou”.

The lovely Linda no one can touch her, she was one of the top female artists of the 70's and 80's, she did this live, no auto tune artists don't perform like this anymore. She was a pure musical genius who explored multiple musical genres and was a smashing success in all of them!
Linda could sing ANYTHING! I loved that she sang different genres also. Her voice is so sweet but can get so strong as well. One of the neat things she did was to perform old songs/ballads from around World War II, accompanied by the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. Her "What's New" album was one of my favorites.
I was going to mention the rock concert too. There wasn't very many choices back then; American Bandstand, Soul Train, maybe Austin City Limits....but I feel everything started going downhill once Solid Gold came on the scene.

This song was the first song by a female artist that charted on the country, pop, soul, and rock charts. By the way, Linda teamed with Dolly and EmmyLou Harris for an album of traditional country songs called Trio in 1986/87. You could listen to just about all of song, but To Know Him Is To Love Him was the first release to radio from the album and is a good place to start.
The Eagles were basically formed through her. Glenn Frey was background vocals and guitar while Don Henley was drum and vocals for her. They started playing around and decided to go out on their own. Blue Bayou is a 2nd great song of Linda's
The Midnight Special was a weekly TV series that aired on Friday nights after The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson on NBC. It aired from 1972 to 1981. I can remember always trying to talk my Mom into letting me stay up and watch. Sometimes I succeeded! Loved that show!
Linda Ronstadt was a powerhouse vocalist. She can ROCK with the best of them!. She never sang a song that wasn't top tier. One of my favorites of hers is an early one titled "Long, Long Time" that will absolutely break your heart, she sounds so sweetly vulnerable. I have seen a clip of her performing it on the old Glen Campbell show, but there is a short version and a long version of the same performance. Either is good but the longer with all the verses is best. I enjoy watching your reaction videos so much! It is so cool to see a younger generation really appreciating the music I grew up listening to!!
As others here have said "Blue Bayou" is a must hear. Linda could sing anything; rock, folk, blues. opera, Mexican traditional standards and I'm sure I'm missing some. She was the first female rock artist to sell multiple consecutive platinum albums and fill stadiums on summer concert tours. She was the bomb. Linda never, ever sang off key. She has perfect pitch. Sadly due to Parkinson's we've lost her beautiful voice. I highly recommend listening to La Charreada from her Spanish album. She just belts it out effortlessly. You can really hear the power in her voice

Read up on her a bit. Before this video, she was in a rock band, The Stone Poneys (Different Drum was popular). She was once wife of Jerry Brown (not while he was governor of CA). She is now battling Parkinson's Disease. Sad. She had a lot of catchy songs, but I think one of the most powerful of her vocals are on the Spanish album she did around '84. POWERFUL. She also did some collaboration with other artists including one with Dolly Parton & Emmylou Harris... an iconic trio at the time with beautiful harmonies. Emmylou: "Linda probably has THE most stunningly beautiful voice of our generation."

Linda certainly had an absolutely incredible voice. She also has a very good brain on her shoulders. I have listened to many interviews and she is quite knowledgeable. On top of all that, what a babe. My best friend from those years and I agreed. If we found Olivia Newton-John we would take her home and ask if we could keep her. If we found Linda Ronstadt we would simply sneak her in and tell no one about her. Just an absolute gorgeous woman. Brains, looks and talent. It just wasn't fair.
Linda Ronstadt was the best selling female artist of the 1970s. You can't go wrong with ANY of her songs. For your next female Friday I strongly recommend "long long time" which I believe was her first solo hit. She was only 19.

Bonnie Raitt considered one of the best female guitarists ever and is also great "blues/rock" singer. Solid and souful vocalist...doesn't feel a need for the "vocal gymnastics" that have become so much part of current music.
The overall musicianship of this era is unmatched in popular music. Skill, talent and practice,practice,practice....Add to that a talent like Linda Ronstadt...this was music .Midnight Special was on Saturday Night in the early Seventies. It took its name from an earlier Radio Program.
Linda is an incredible vocalist! She’s pretty much sung every genre. I’d recommend you two watch The Sound of My Voice. It’s a documentary about her. It’s beautiful and fun and bittersweet. Sadly, Linda now suffers from Parkinson’s Disease. She can no longer sing.
Try 'Different Drum' next. One of the things I like about her is she just did what she wanted; labels couldn't contain her. She released an album of Mexican folk songs in Spanish. Her contracted record company objected, but she released it anyway. Her fame grew. She was rock, country, operetta (Pirates of Penzance), folk, Mexican folk... on and on.
One of her first "visible performances " in '67 as singer with band, The Stone Ponies. Lastly... check out CHECK OUT HER COLLABORATIONS WITH AARON NEVILLE...absolutely transcends!
Linda released several Spanish language albums. Prior to that, and even more to the initial objection of her label and management, was the album of standards "What's New" she did with Nelson Riddle. It was such a hit that she followed it up with two more. A year after the third collaboration with Nelson Riddle she released "Canciones de Mi Padre" which was a massive hit. While she may have received some push back, she had already proven by this point that her instincts and talent were right on.
I had that "standards" album. I absolutely loved it. Her styling of those songs really enriched my appreciation for the "genre" (though it encompassed more than one). AND ... I simply cannot begin to express the soul and power of her collaboration with Aaron Neville. ROB SQUAD...PLEASE SAME BOTH OF THESE!
Finally. Linda is one of the best Voices ever. She is credited with creating Country/Rock. And gave her endorsement to Glen Frey and Don Henley to leave her band and start their own band, the Eagles. She even helped form them by recommending their guitar player and bass player.

Actually, those are not Bongos. Bongos are small enough to hold in your lap and have Afro-Cuban roots. These tall drums you can play standing up are called Congas. They too have Latin roots. :)
She is most likely one of the most successful female artists ever. in fact, the eagles, before they started their own thing, were brought together by her to be her backup band. she has a fascinating story, as she went through her career and her rise to fame. totally worth checking out.
The first time I heard Ronstadt was when she did this song on the Midnight Special on Dec. 21, 1973. I was absolutely blown away, and wanted in the worst way to buy the record. But *it hadn't been recorded yet!* Ronstadt recorded it the following summer, and it was finally released as a single in November 1974. It would never happen today that an artist would perform a song on national TV that was not yet available for purchase.
Thanks for that info. I didn't understand the date discrepancy (Dec.1973 TV date) because I firmly remember "You're No Good" hitting radio in early 1975 (I had just moved to SF) and then going to #1. This was Linda's first #1 and first Top 10 tune also. Her highest ranked hit prior to this on Billboard's Top 100 was "Different Drum" with The Stone Poneys which peaked at #13.

I grew up in LA and they were all very well known on the circuit in those days with Linda.

Don Kirchner's Rock Concert, Midnight special and to a degree, Soul Train and American Bandstand were the only way to see music on Television...If you wanted to see Real live performances it was the Fist two that you would have to catch on Friday or Saturday late night...before VCR's you either saw it or you didn't. It was the highlight of my week to be able to see all the bands I love playing live.
Don't forget Ed Sullivan. He may have been a grumpy looking old man but he really understood entertainment and booked something for everyone. He just knew who would be popular and held no prejudices as far as the type of music (unless their lyrics were overtly sexual or supportive of drugs)
What I like about the music of the 60's and 70's is that no matter the genre of the song, the musicianship was impeccable. R&B, Funk, Pop, Rock, Country, it didn't matter.
You should know that every song that Ronstadt recorded was a cover of a song that had been previously recorded by another artist. Yet Ronstadt charted again and again and again, she was that good at reinterpreting other people's music and making it her own. I'm really glad you got to her, because she freaking rocks. Oh, a little personal factoid: She used to date the Governor of California, Jerry Brown.
The two backup singers were legendary in the 60s and 70s: Sherlie Mae Matthews on the left and Clydie King on the right. Clydie sang backup/alongside with Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, etc.

This was before MTV and, unlike MTV's videos, these were actually live performances. There was also another show called Don Kirshner's "In Rock." Good music on TV.
Linda Ronstadt could sing it all and so she did. Always more down to earth than the BS dirty rotten music business. Even as a superstar pinup in the crazy 70s she had her head screwed on. Vocally and visually stunning. Rockin', groovin' or crooning in Spanish - love her still.

Her background group originally was the Eagles. When they decided to go out on their own, she was very encouraging to them! I’ve IG my favorite songs was “Desperado”, written by Don Henley, the drummer for the Eagles. Her most haunting song was “Ghost Train”. Her big hits were numerous! Lots of top ten hits. Another biggy was “Blue Bayou”.

The lovely Linda no one can touch her, she was one of the top female artists of the 70's and 80's, she did this live, no auto tune artists don't perform like this anymore. She was a pure musical genius who explored multiple musical genres and was a smashing success in all of them!
She was also the highest paid female artist until she had to retire.

Linda could sing ANYTHING! I loved that she sang different genres also. Her voice is so sweet but can get so strong as well. One of the neat things she did was to perform old songs/ballads from around World War II, accompanied by the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. Her "What's New" album was one of my favorites.

I was going to mention the rock concert too. There wasn't very many choices back then; American Bandstand, Soul Train, maybe Austin City Limits....but I feel everything started going downhill once Solid Gold came on the scene.
I would come home early from parties to see THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL! My friends thought I was crazy. But in those days, and my age, was the only place to see bands play on TV. Was too young to go to concerts at that time, so this was the next best thing. I’m 64. Roger in Pierre South Dakota

This song was the first song by a female artist that charted on the country, pop, soul, and rock charts. By the way, Linda teamed with Dolly and EmmyLou Harris for an album of traditional country songs called Trio in 1986/87. You could listen to just about all of song, but To Know Him Is To Love Him was the first release to radio from the album and is a good place to start.
The Eagles were basically formed through her. Glenn Frey was background vocals and guitar while Don Henley was drum and vocals for her. They started playing around and decided to go out on their own. Blue Bayou is a 2nd great song of Linda's

The Midnight Special was a weekly TV series that aired on Friday nights after The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson on NBC. It aired from 1972 to 1981. I can remember always trying to talk my Mom into letting me stay up and watch. Sometimes I succeeded! Loved that show!

Linda Ronstadt was a powerhouse vocalist. She can ROCK with the best of them!. She never sang a song that wasn't top tier. One of my favorites of hers is an early one titled "Long, Long Time" that will absolutely break your heart, she sounds so sweetly vulnerable. I have seen a clip of her performing it on the old Glen Campbell show, but there is a short version and a long version of the same performance. Either is good but the longer with all the verses is best. I enjoy watching your reaction videos so much! It is so cool to see a younger generation really appreciating the music I grew up listening to!!

As others here have said "Blue Bayou" is a must hear. Linda could sing anything; rock, folk, blues. opera, Mexican traditional standards and I'm sure I'm missing some. She was the first female rock artist to sell multiple consecutive platinum albums and fill stadiums on summer concert tours. She was the bomb. Linda never, ever sang off key. She has perfect pitch. Sadly due to Parkinson's we've lost her beautiful voice. I highly recommend listening to La Charreada from her Spanish album. She just belts it out effortlessly. You can really hear the power in her voice

Read up on her a bit. Before this video, she was in a rock band, The Stone Poneys (Different Drum was popular). She was once wife of Jerry Brown (not while he was governor of CA). She is now battling Parkinson's Disease. Sad. She had a lot of catchy songs, but I think one of the most powerful of her vocals are on the Spanish album she did around '84. POWERFUL. She also did some collaboration with other artists including one with Dolly Parton & Emmylou Harris... an iconic trio at the time with beautiful harmonies. Emmylou: "Linda probably has THE most stunningly beautiful voice of our generation."

Linda certainly had an absolutely incredible voice. She also has a very good brain on her shoulders. I have listened to many interviews and she is quite knowledgeable. On top of all that, what a babe. My best friend from those years and I agreed. If we found Olivia Newton-John we would take her home and ask if we could keep her. If we found Linda Ronstadt we would simply sneak her in and tell no one about her. Just an absolute gorgeous woman. Brains, looks and talent. It just wasn't fair.
Linda Ronstadt was the best selling female artist of the 1970s. You can't go wrong with ANY of her songs. For your next female Friday I strongly recommend "long long time" which I believe was her first solo hit. She was only 19.
Her versatility was unmatched: rock, country, operetta, Mexican. She could sing like an angel or a demon.

Bonnie Raitt considered one of the best female guitarists ever and is also great "blues/rock" singer. Solid and souful vocalist...doesn't feel a need for the "vocal gymnastics" that have become so much part of current music.

Sadly, Linda now suffers from Parkinson’s Disease. She can no longer sing.

Try 'Different Drum' next. One of the things I like about her is she just did what she wanted; labels couldn't contain her. She released an album of Mexican folk songs in Spanish. Her contracted record company objected, but she released it anyway. Her fame grew. She was rock, country, operetta (Pirates of Penzance), folk, Mexican folk... on and on.
One of her first "visible performances " in '67 as singer with band, The Stone Ponies. Lastly... check out CHECK OUT HER COLLABORATIONS WITH AARON NEVILLE...absolutely transcends!

Linda released several Spanish language albums. Prior to that, and even more to the initial objection of her label and management, was the album of standards "What's New" she did with Nelson Riddle. It was such a hit that she followed it up with two more. A year after the third collaboration with Nelson Riddle she released "Canciones de Mi Padre" which was a massive hit. While she may have received some push back, she had already proven by this point that her instincts and talent were right on.
I had that "standards" album. I absolutely loved it. Her styling of those songs really enriched my appreciation for the "genre" (though it encompassed more than one). AND ... I simply cannot begin to express the soul and power of her collaboration with Aaron Neville. ROB SQUAD...PLEASE SAME BOTH OF THESE!
Finally. Linda is one of the best Voices ever. She is credited with creating Country/Rock. And gave her endorsement to Glen Frey and Don Henley to leave her band and start their own band, the Eagles. She even helped form them by recommending their guitar player and bass player.
Linda has an astonishingly great and varied musical catalogue. She is highly respected among her peer greats.

Amazing singer with a HUGE catalog of songs. She was also on Broadway, has numerous Spanish records, can sing jazz standards - just an amazing singer all around with a terrific voice!
Actually, those are not Bongos. Bongos are small enough to hold in your lap and have Afro-Cuban roots. These tall drums you can play standing up are called Congas. They too have Latin roots. :)

The first time I heard Ronstadt was when she did this song on the Midnight Special on Dec. 21, 1973. I was absolutely blown away, and wanted in the worst way to buy the record. But *it hadn't been recorded yet!* Ronstadt recorded it the following summer, and it was finally released as a single in November 1974. It would never happen today that an artist would perform a song on national TV that was not yet available for purchase.
Thanks for that info. I didn't understand the date discrepancy (Dec.1973 TV date) because I firmly remember "You're No Good" hitting radio in early 1975 (I had just moved to SF) and then going to #1. This was Linda's first #1 and first Top 10 tune also. Her highest ranked hit prior to this on Billboard's Top 100 was "Different Drum" with The Stone Poneys which peaked at #13.

Leadon was replaced by Joe Walsh around 75 and Meisner was replaced by Timothy B Schmit in 77. Felder joined in 74. I grew up in LA and they were all very well known on the circuit in those days with Linda.

Don Kirchner's Rock Concert, Midnight special and to a degree, Soul Train and American Bandstand were the only way to see music on Television...If you wanted to see Real live performances it was the Fist two that you would have to catch on Friday or Saturday late night...before VCR's you either saw it or you didn't. It was the highlight of my week to be able to see all the bands I love playing live.
Don't forget Ed Sullivan. He may have been a grumpy looking old man but he really understood entertainment and booked something for everyone. He just knew who would be popular and held no prejudices as far as the type of music (unless their lyrics were overtly sexual or supportive of drugs)
What I like about the music of the 60's and 70's is that no matter the genre of the song, the musicianship was impeccable. R&B, Funk, Pop, Rock, Country, it didn't matter.
It was on every Saturday night in the 70s. You'd come home from hanging out and we would watch this. Everybody was on the midnight special!

You should know that every song that Ronstadt recorded was a cover of a song that had been previously recorded by another artist. Yet Ronstadt charted again and again and again, she was that good at reinterpreting other people's music and making it her own. I'm really glad you got to her, because she freaking rocks. Oh, a little personal factoid: She used to date the Governor of California, Jerry Brown.
I think all of her versions are better than the originals, except for "That'll Be The Day."

The two backup singers were legendary in the 60s and 70s: Sherlie Mae Matthews on the left and Clydie King on the right. Clydie sang backup/alongside with Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, etc.
Clydie was also Bob's girlfriend too.
