    Love the use of Vampire: Master of Darkness music in this video. That game was Sega's answer to Konami's Castlevania games, since Konami never developed for the Master System and Game Gear (and they totally should have. While Master of Darkness tried to fill the Castlevania void, the Master System and Game Gear could have also used games from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tiny Toon Adventures, and Rocket Knight Adventures).

    Brilliant video, love my Sega 8 bit consoles :) The Master System version of the first Road Rash was excellent, shame that the sequel never made it out for either system. I had no idea that Pac in Time was a reskin of Fury of the Furries! Rare that I learn something from a retor video so excellent work! The graphics on Spirou look excellent for the GG. I had Yogi's Goldrush on the Gameboy back in the day, and really enjoyed the game. Sadly you couldn't change into Booboo in that version. Bonus points for your pronounciation of "pic-a-nic" baskets ;) I love the Master System codemasters games with their custom carts and bigger box art - would love to pick up a repro of Dinobasher.

    @youdontneedtoseehisidentif4939 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Something that always seems odd to me is people stating that the Master System was more popular than the NES here in the UK; I don't doubt that they're correct, but growing up in the late-eighties/early-nineties I knew a total of one person who had a Master System - everybody else I knew had a NES, either Nintendo- or (one girl) Mattel-branded (and my family wasn't wealthy enough to have either! :P)

    • @onaretrotip
      @onaretrotip  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that's unusual. I actually played a lot more NES than Master System as a kid, as my mate over the road had one (him and his two older brothers chipped in to get one for Christmas), but they were the only people I knew had a NES. Every other console owner had Master Systems. To be honest though, most people had a Spectrum, Amstrad, or C64.

    • @youdontneedtoseehisidentif4939
      @youdontneedtoseehisidentif4939 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As I wrote, I don't doubt that was unusual and that the figures are correct and that it was more common for people to have a Master System than a NES - and that it was more common to have an 8bit computer than either - but it feels strange to read or hear that as it doesn't reflect my experience at all; my school had a few BBC Micros, and one girl I knew had a Amstrad CPC 6128, but those were the only 8bit computers I ever used, and I've never even seen a Spectrum or Commodore 64 in real life.
      And no, I'm not a Nintendo fanboy :) Whilst my first console was a SNES - at a time when I think the PlayStation might already have been released - I almost got a Master System instead as I was big fan of the 8bit Sonic games and - after playing a lot of Bug! and watching in awe as a cousin completed perfect laps in Daytona - I wished I could've had a Saturn, in spite of the first model controller being almost too big for my hands :)
      (It's also strange to read or hear about people renting games, as nobody I knew did - they saved up (or got cracked copies for their Amigas...))

    • @onaretrotip
      @onaretrotip  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow that's crazy (regarding the 8-bit computers)! As much as I copied disks for my Amiga, I did rent games as well (not sure which consoles I rented for, but definitely PlayStation).
      Interesting you mentioned Saturn, as that's the console that nobody had in my experience, and I never even saw one back in the day.

    • @youdontneedtoseehisidentif4939
      @youdontneedtoseehisidentif4939 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Besides the Amiga and the Master System, that's kind of a list of platforms that I've never encountered ;)
      I don't remember the first game that I ever played; I think that it might have been the original Star Wars arcade game at an arcade in Lowestoft.
      I know that I played Super Mario Bros. before I played its sequel, but I didn't particularly care for it, mostly because it was too difficult for me; its sequel was the first game I was awed by, partly because it was a lot easier, partly because it was a lot more varied, and partly because it felt to me that there was a world to explore without worrying about a time-limit - if I'd known the expression at that age I'd have uttered "holy SH*T!" when I realised that you could have Mario walk left and go back to where you been before o_O
      The preponderance of NES where I lived _might_ have been because of a Japanese family who came to live nearby; I was friends with one of their sons who had a NES, but I don't remember that they were the first person I knew to have one, and I don't remember them mentioning having a Famicom back home; and that still wouldn't explain my never encountering the more common 8bit computers.
      There was a corner shop near to where I lived that had a selection of games on tape; I don't remember that I ever knew for what system, but from what I do remember of the screenshots on the back of the cassette cases I think they were likely for the Commodore 64; but, as I wrote, I've never actually encountered a Commodore 64 in real life - and I don't even know if the friend whose family owned the shop had one!
      Computers I encountered during that era:
      - Unknown computer that used 5.25 inch disks (it might have been a BBC Micro)
      - BBC Micro
      - Archimedes (I'm not certain)
      - CPC 6128
      - Amiga 500 (I'm not certain)
      -- 1200
      - Macintosh (680X0) *
      - Macintosh (PowerPC) *
      - PC
      Consoles I encountered during that era:
      - Game Boy *
      -- Color *
      - Game Gear
      - NES
      - Master System
      - SNES *
      - Mega Drive
      - Saturn
      - 3DO
      - PlayStation
      - N64 *
      (*: my family owned this system towards the end of that era)

I used to read about master system games and turbo grafx games in EGM, but the market here was mainly nintendo. My biggest complaint with this episode is that you didn't mention the reasons why "most" of the games were cancelled! You know that's the biggest reason why we're here, right? You expect me to find out myself? Fine, this will take alot of editing though.
    1: Road Rash 2's Game Gear port never had the m/o behind its cancellation specifically mentioned, but my educated assumption is that Probe Entertainment (who worked on the GG port of the 1st game) were suffering financially at the time & were bought out by Acclaim who turned them into their UK branch.
    Acclaim most likely tried to finish the port but EA stripped them of the license due to them being disappointed with the presentation & other things. Fearing layoffs, Acclaim sold the source code to Domark who partnered up with Warner Brothers to publish the game. They then pitched the idea to Kawasaki for a Racing Tournament game as some sort of sponsorship deal, which they accepted & hired Lankhor to finish the job Acclaim started. Lankhor then completely finished the code & brand conversion over to Kawasaki & they then released it as K.S.C!
    2: Barbie Super Model huh? Well, this 1 is simple enough. It was cancelled due to the poor sales of the handheld & the terrible reception it received on both SNES & SMD.
    3: Pac - In - Time is tricky but it's most likely that it was cancelled for the Genesis & Game Gear because Sega refused to license the 2 ports for not meeting their quality standards. Namco also felt that the Sega ports would underperform due to the failure of the Sega Add-ons & the upcoming release of the Sega Saturn. Maybe they were cancelled due to the lackluster sales of the other ports despite being good.
    5: Yogi Bear's Gold Rush had its Game Gear port cancelled due to the developers feeling that the handheld system wasn't profitable enough & Nintendo requested the publisher to keep the game Game Boy exclusive. The game performed mediocre both criticality & financially on Game Boy which was basically what killed the GG port.
    6: Crazy Faces was cancelled due to the company not affording to release 2 games at the same time. They ended up releasing a Similar game for the Game Boy that same year.
    7: Wildsnake's Sega ports were cancelled due to the Nintendo ports not selling well & their critical performance was underwhelming. Also, Sega was culling its portfolio of Genesis & Game Gear releases to make way for the Saturn. As for Alex endorsing the game? The publisher bribed him with $4 Million American Dollars to present the game for Markey value!
    8: Sonic's Edusoft was cancelled due to the developers receiving a "cease & desist" letter from Sega for they didn't want Sonic involved with the title. The publisher then just decided to cancel the game rather than reskin it, since it would mean the entire theme would have to change.

    Road rash two would have been a cool port. The Yogi game didn’t look half bad either.

    • @onaretrotip
      @onaretrotip  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, Road Rash II would've been awesome, Ryan! Yogi looks okay, but nothing particularly unique as platformers go, and the Game Gear had a few decent ones.

    Sega Master System still a top system. Game Gear remember only use Duracell, you should get another 75k viewer on this video with easy.

      @onaretrotip  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, love both consoles and very much still worth playing. Thankfully batteries are far better now than they were in the early 90s haha. Ah, thanks, that's very kind. Not going to happen though!

    A lot of possibly good games. sad that they were never released. But i think that the game gear had a lot of good games. Though not as many as the gameboy.

    • @onaretrotip

    Master System was NOT more popular than NES in all of Europe. NES stomped Master System here in Scandinavia for example and NES did better in France too.

      Interesting. Still, in Europe as a whole the statement's accurate.
