Ereng is now the Cross Country coach at UTEP. I interviewed him in 2013, he told me someone had given him the wrong time for this final, he was told 6 pm instead of 16:00, and arrived thinking had 2 hours to spare, but it was only minutes. He used the first 2 laps as warm up and still managed to break a world record.
Kenya has produced great athletes, but Paul Ereng was something else! We are extremely proud of you Ereng especially after the uplifting performance of 1988 Seoul Olympics! Absolute Legend!!!!!
I remember watching this "live" an thinking what a class act Paul Ereng is It looks as great now as it did back then. What a smooth and stylish runner he was .. Awesome
@@mathematics5573 THAT'S TRUE BECAUSE 8 YEARS LATER WILSON KIPKETER MADE THIS RUN LOOK LIKE......SLOW,,,SMASHING THE WORLD RECORD TWICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND TO THIS DAY 1:42'6 STILL STANDS INDOORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The self confidence and discipline it takes to stick to your race plan no matter what. Ereng was so far back but KNEW everyone else had gone out too fast. He was faster and also quite a bit smarter than the rest of the field, no disrespect intended. And never underestimate the value of a knowledgeable, skilled commentator as in this race, adding to the goosebumps one gets watching and listening. U.S. commentators should listen and study because they are still vastly inferior in this the year 2017.
Ron Pickering was clearly astonished by Ereng's performance, and rightly so. This was a truly phenomenal performance. Paul Ereng was the greatest 800 metres runner I ever witnessed and that includes Seb Coe, David Rudisha and Jaochim Cruz.
Fun fact: Ereng accidentally got the race time mixed up and nearly missed this race - he described his reason for staying so far in the back at the start was because he was treating the first part of the race as his warm up (he arrived so late that he literally didn't even have time to warm up before rushing onto the track)
If I remember correctly, the meet schedule was printed in military time, with the race scheduled for 15:00. Ereng misread it as 5:00, but UVA policy was to show up 2 hours prior to race time, and as such showed up at 3pm - juuuuuuust in time for the race as they had been kind and waited a few minutes for him to show up.
Kenya has been a great nation producing magnificent athletes but Ereng stands out, it appears that he mentored the great Asbel kiprop and the great steeplechaser Kemboi, they had the same finishing too
Ray Brown set my HS 800 meters record with the same time with which he won the ACCs. We used to love watching him train on the track (he was coaching at Episcopal HS in the first couple of years after UVa). So smooth.
Ikem "I was paid £10k not to beat Coe in his 1989 last UK race" Billy. So, as a minimum we know from his own words that Billy engaged in dishonesty. Does his comment have any credibility? Of course not

Watching this in 2022 and its great to see wonderful comeback from Paul Ereng. Where is this great Man.
This man Ereng' has a stride equivalent to a horse's jump. He makes his fellow athletes look like they're walking. What a man!! Fantastic!!
That lethal finish was something else
The commentator is as good as the runner.
👍👍👍
Twas the late great Ron Pickering. Had such a command of his commentary
oh my God this is totally awesome - I always thought David Rudisha was the bomb but this is wonderful
ik but rudisha seems to have more body power
ereng uses his legs and tactics
long legs i meant

if rudisha did that he could always be going under 1 40 coz he got more power than ereng to finish the race
Ooh, I'm not so sure about that.
"Crack'in"!?! That was more than crack'in, that was fire crack'in! Incredible.
Ron Pickering was clearly astonished by Ereng's performance, and rightly so. This was a truly phenomenal performance. Paul Ereng was the greatest 800 metres runner I ever witnessed and that includes Seb Coe, David Rudisha and Jaochim Cruz.
This one gives me goose bumps each and everytime am watching it
Agree!

Unbelievable!
I can confirm this, he told me this story in 2013

Amazing race with fantastic commentary.
its a great race and the guy who ran behind Ereng throughout the race managed third position.
Insane finishing power
Amazing. Saw this live on TV back in the day. Amazing & Vialli got the bronze. He was last with 200m to go I think.
Kenya has been a great nation producing magnificent athletes but Ereng stands out, it appears that he mentored the great Asbel kiprop and the great steeplechaser Kemboi, they had the same finishing too
What a great kick at the end, considering he had to run wide for a lot of it !! 👍👍👍
Paul Ereng was phenomenal.
This man is an icon!I like his lightening KICK!
WHERE is his son to inherit his dad's speed?
Paul Ereng what a tactician!
This guy is one of my coaches now 😳
Really?? Some sources says that he died 😢
Really?
@@nicholaskirui4123no I can assure you he’s alive and well. Search up his name with “ A&M track and field “
Very tough guy,that was awesome....
Two UVa grads in this race. Ray Brown setting the pace and Ereng breaking the record.
Ray Brown set my HS 800 meters record with the same time with which he won the ACCs. We used to love watching him train on the track (he was coaching at Episcopal HS in the first couple of years after UVa). So smooth.
Erang wearing a UVa singlet and shorts because the Kenyan team uniform did not arrive in Budapest
Proudly Kenyan 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤❤
Dave Wottle was supposed to have run the best last 200 in a major 800. Paul Ereng: hold my beer.
Divid RUDISHA OF HIS TIME. That is kenyan sprit!
Am here again celebrating a Kenyan 800M Olympics gold medalist, Wanyonyi. The greatest of Kenya is yet to come.
i wonder how runners feel when racing against them
Now look at the best😂😂😂
"It's 15 metres!" No Ron, more like 9 metres. Ereng also somewhat impeded Barbosa coming off the bend.
Greatest
Most Turkana & Maasai tribes of KENYA have devastating kicks in track & fields races
Ray Brown made this dramatic race. He ran too fast in the first two laps.
Who was the commentator?
Somebody who worked at the BBC in that time..... The best commentator ever!
Wow
Ikem "I was paid £10k not to beat Coe in his 1989 last UK race" Billy.
So, as a minimum we know from his own words that Billy engaged in dishonesty.
Does his comment have any credibility? Of course not
Ereng should have been dq'd for cutting in on Barbosa destroying his speed
