    Seems like everyone is getting inspired from Alessandro Cortini and his 4 track setup, bad thing about it is that it jacked up the price for those portastudios lol, even the marantz 3 heads are pretty pricey now too thanks to amulets and the like 🙂

    • @SupahDupah
      @SupahDupah  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yep, it is hip nowadays... it is Hainbach's fault ;)

      You think Tascam would take note and bring back the 4track. They've become the 303 of the 21st century.

    • @DanHillman
      @DanHillman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I discovered him at the start of the UK lockdown and realised the Portastudio I was given by a friend a few years back for doing some retro mastering was suddenly exactly what i needed and also mega expensive!

  • @robguitarwizard
    @robguitarwizard 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    If you dont have a 4track machine you could use 4 or more little cassette players and run them though a little mixer.
    Each player has its own tape with a chord or note loop.
    Then you can get clever and swap tapes in and out of the different machines as you go!

    • @SupahDupah
      @SupahDupah  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That also sounds like a cool idea! :) A cassette player orchestra :)

    • @DanHillman
      @DanHillman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing with these Portastudios is that they have a 3 way speed control and fine tune adjustment so you can back things down by half or 1/4 speed which most small handhelds can't.

      @@SupahDupah for sure man, I watched the same video you did and suddenly realised I had the bigger version of the one he used. Those small adjustable ones seem hard to find. Also a fan of Hainbach and the Nagra stuff he uses is insanely priced. Gonna stick with the Porta!

      @@DanHillman lots of them can , especially mini cassette dictaphones. Plus many walkmans can be modded to have tape speed control with little more than a screw driver a potentiometer and a soldering iron.

    First, thank you for these videos! I discovered ambiant music and tape loops with Hainbach and Amulets few month ago and now your channel. So i removed dust from my 424mkII and tryied some noise...
    By the way, do you have an idea about the date the 3rd episode (103...) will be released?
    Cheers!

    why does the sound change so much from digitone / out to tape / record / out? it seems degraded pretty significantly. shouldn't the tape recorder do a clear recording of the original signal? or is it because of the tape loop thing? thanks for any response.

    • @SupahDupah
      @SupahDupah  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, it's because of the tape loop not being perfectly tight and with the cut not being perfect, so it wobbles more than if you would use a normal cassette tape. Part of the charm me thinks, but you gotta like that style. You can also apply this technique with a normal cassette, but then you would have to record the individual notes/chords for a long(er) time, so you can play with it when played back. Hope this helps!

      @@SupahDupah thanks, good to know. i've been looking at multitrack recorders for a while now, intrigued by the same technique used here via nine inch nails.

    Excellent video! How would that tape play if you played it in a regular cassette player? Would all 4 tracks play simultaneously? Or would only one track play?

    • @SupahDupah
      @SupahDupah  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will play channel 1 en 2 on the left and right... and if you flip it, you hear 3 and 4 on L and R but then in reverse... and a normal cassette plays at a slower speed as well... so it plays in slow motion ;)

    break the two plastic tongues on the top of the cassette(opposite side of where the tape is). That disables recording. If you want to record put the tape on these area again, so you avoid taping the tape or recording head.
