@@cerneuffington2656 and to be fair to greaves that’s how most top scorers since then and including today get huge goal tallies. He still got goals against the big countries and didn’t take penalties, his goal record is outstanding
As an American, I’ve been an English Football fan since 2010, you occasionally hear the name Jimmy Greaves, but after the sad news this morning, I started to research this incredible mans career. Just mind blowing. I would like to read his autobiography “Greavsie”. I’m sure it will be a great read. RIP Mr Greaves
Greaves scored a record 366 goals. Until recently, this was the most in goals in European football history and stood the test of time for 46 years. This was broken only in 2017 by Cristiano Ronaldo. The greatest English striker of all time.
Plus the fact his career in the top flight was only 8 years. Ronaldo was in La Liga for 9, and his career has been going on since 03, so approx. 18 years. True legend of the game, and incredibly underrated.
Saint and Greavsie was my favourite show on Saturday mornings combining sport and humour Still watch replays in TH-cam RIP Greavsie thanks for the memories
For me Jimmy Greaves has to be the greatest goal scorer England ever produced. The fact that none of his goals were penalties seals it for me. Arguably one of the greatest goal scorers in history full stop.
People like to throw stats around nowadays. Half the modern day players wouldn’t get anywhere close to Jimmy’s figures had they played back then. They’d get booted up in the air once and that’d be it, broken for life. Jimmy had the heart of a lion, just got on with it and hit teams where it really hurt; scoring goals and winning games. Incredible footballer, one of England’s best ever. Won’t ever be forgotten by England fans for everything he did for this nation. Should really be a statue at Wembley in all honesty.
Only those who saw him play and I did hundreds of times home and away for the lilywhites, know just how great a player he was. Playing in two inches of mud and frozen pitches and a era of the game when defenders could kick you up in the air. He managed to drift pass players, wrong foot defenders. Just pure genius of a player. RIP the greatest player ever.
Agreed Steve, Jimmy was underrated I reckon, easily in my top 5 players ever and as instinctively skilful as Bestie. His change of pace absolutely slaughtered anyone tasked with marking him. When he sensed a chance defenders said that small lightly built man felt as strong as a lion when you tried to knock him over. His clinical finishing was built on a geometric understanding of positioning and angles. And ice cool nerves.
Arsenal fan, but what a player Jimmy was. Remember him playing for the Chelsea youth team against Arsenal in the early 60’s and some of the many great goals he scored for Spurs. RIP Jimmy.
Great player. What a record. But just remember watching Saint and Greavsie every Saturday. Fantastic, The Saint crying laughing. Thanks to both of you . Rest in Peace.
One of the best players there has ever been. From a neutral. And it's nothing to do with Jimmy scoring against Spurs for Chelsea and allowing Burnley to win the league. Martin Tyler: top man.
When you think of the state of some of the pitches Jimmy Greaves played on in those days and the way he skipped around defenders with such ease is remarkable. He was the greatest ever goal scorer in my mind.
My Dad moved to London to go to university from Wales was home sick and went to White Hart Lane to watch Spurs play cost him 20p and he saw Jimmy score a Hat-trick which he will never forget and made him feel better and has stayed in England ever since, RIP Jimmy the best there ever was should have been Sir Jimmy 😢
Got to pay respects to Mr Grieves. He was a true legend of the game. Playing like leo Messi in the sky along with the rest of the departed 66 WC winning team once again. RIP Sir u was a true great.
So apt that we can all remember, with such fondness, Jimmy at the Spurs - Chelsea game today. I have supported Spurs since their win at the 1967 FA cup Final - Come on Jimmy!
Mate i come from a family that is mental about everything Liverpool. But my memories as a kid, was wanting to know who this jimmie grieves was because my Dad would bang on about him and at the time it annoyed me because i knew my Dad was a liverpool fan, so why was he talking about this Spurs/Chelsea legend like he loved him. I think this is why i turned into a football historian, all thanks to the likes of Jimmie Grieves, Emlin Hughs, Tommy Smith, King Kenny and many more.
Both Greavsie and Saint were not only great footballers (though Saint being nowhere near Jimmy and I'm a Liverpool fan) but great characters and entertainers on and off the field. They played and LIVED with a smile on their face and obviously had a LOT of fun from the stories they tell. Stark contrast with today's press groomed 'stars' who um and erm their way through pointless and dull interviews. Saint and Greavsie talked honestly about EVERYTHING. A friend of mine met Jimmy at an event about 15 years ago and asked about S&G coming back and Jim said that they'd never be allowed back because you can't tell the truth these days in case it upsets someone.
A sad day, What a remarkable player he was, finishing, ball control, movement, he had the lot, never had the privilage of seeing him play live, but there is enough footage of him to show his genius, His goal record is just nuts, a player that reminded me of him a lot was romario the great brazilian forward.
That’s more debatable. Dave McKay, Danny Blanchflower, Ossie Ardilles, and Glenn Hoddle are all in the conversation there. Also I think it’s debatable about Chelsea as well but he is imo the greatest English post war goal scorer!
Jimmy was the greatest English striker to kick a ball. A Leeds fan myself, I would him expect to be up having a pint with Jackie Charlton, Lorimer, Hunter, Bobby Moore and all of his fallen footy friends. A brilliant man. RIP Jimmy.
