    07:20 Hippo licking up the blood
    This corner of the Sabie River was shared by a pod of hippo, one MONSTER NILE CROCODILE, and a second crocodile that almost looks small at only 10 ft or so. It was 38 degrees by 1030 and the herbivores were making their way down to the water. The monster crocodile was positioned at the edge of the water, just inches below the surface, barely visible to my eye from above.
    The crocs meant business that morning. They were actively positioning themselves for an attack and this was shot at the end of the first year of what has now become a three year drought. When the rain comes, the herbivores can drink from less precarious water sources like puddles so I imagine the crocs were bulking up for the late monsoon season.
    A scene that I shot a few days prior with a sable and one crocodile was not as quick due to shallow waters. The croc couldn't take the sable under but had a strong hold of it by the hind so the struggle went on for a long time. The sable herd waited for quite a while 20 to 30 meters from me. I'll share more about that scene in an upcoming video.
    This is one of my favorite spots in all of Kruger to just sit back and let the safari come to me. Even SABLE! Finding a herd of sable is a special and rare sighting in Kruger and getting an opportunity to see more of their behavior than just a fleeting glimpse through the woodland transitional areas is a golden moment! It was so interesting to see how cautious they were. Noticeably more than any other mammal that I saw here. Only a few in the herd came down to drink. Others seemed to approach cautiously, wait high on the bank, then turn away. In upcoming videos, I'll share footage of the sable as well as ele, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, baboon, impala, kudu, waterbuck, fish eagle, kingfishers, and more!
    Contact me if you're interested in a guided photography safari in Kruger National Park!
    If you would like TIPS on how to see Kruger National Park on a self-guided safari, please post your questions below!
    Thanks for viewing!
    Kind Regards,
    Jason

      According to one of the viewers, Albert Impalastein invented the long drinking straw but production of the straws was thwarted by the powerful crocodile union. Natural selection took over and impalas with longest necks passed along their genes and the stub-necked impala became extinct.

      I thought you were joking, but you might be dead right. In one of the Gustav documentaries, they show hippos gently licking the carcass of recently fallen prey. The pod of hippos then laid around it in a circle to keep Gustav at bay. The documentary said it was a ritual of sorts. Animal behavior is interesting.

      He's HUGE! The average Nile crocodile measures around 4m in total length but they can reach up to 6m. The crocs in Kruger tend to be smaller due to less than ideal climate, but I'd guess this croc is 18-19 ft long.

      Gustav is legendary. I watched great a documentary about him. This croc could arguably be the biggest croc I saw in The Kruger. Like Gustav, he has most of his teeth and they approximated his age around 60 years old. Nile crocodiles can live to 100 years or so.

      On a previous visit to Kruger, I watched a mother hippo kill a nile crocodile for killing its baby. I have a few images on my Instagram account @acavemancandoit It was an unbelievable scene to watch the mother kill the croc, retrieve the body of the baby hippo, perform a burial ritual, and follow the bull hippo out in procession. The male was twice the size, but watched the scene along with a dozen other crocs. You're right, the crocs don't mess with the hippos for the most part.

    How big would Gustave be next to this croc?

    • @acavemancandoityoutube
      @acavemancandoityoutube  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've done a little searching to find out a bit more about Gustave and this is what I found published by National Geographic on March 16, 2009, "ADVENTURE first wrote about Gustave and Faye in our March 2005 issue (see Bobby Models's images in a photo gallery). At that point, Faye estimated that the crocodile was 60 years old, measured 20 feet, and weighed in at a whopping one ton. Also, unlike his more apocryphal monster cousins, Gustave is most definitely a real beast and a confirmed killer. Records of his attacks on villagers living on the northeastern shores of Lake Tanganyika date back to 1987. Although it is doubtful that one crocodile could be responsible for all of the deaths pinned on Gustave, eyewitness reports almost invariably describe an abnormally large croc with the same scar on the top of its head, which Faye thinks is the mark left by an old gun shot wound."
