The best drum sounds in the studio are Gretsch usa custom. Mastodon has used Gretsch usa custom in the studio so has Metallica. The other drums sound good too but Gretsch owns it!
All else equal, the Pearl drums sounded the most live and had the longest sustain. The Mapex kit sounded much darker and drier. I mean, I can go on for a while.
none of these kits doesn’t fits my taste, to be honest... but in my arsenal I have a 12” Mapex Warbird snare and it’s killer instrument for intense music
@@ThomannsDrumBash well, actually I consider myself as a pretty universal drummer/musician, so I need universal instrument. I’m a Premier dude since ‘96, have English made GenX and Genista kits. From Premier I would choose Genista for rock/metal. Birch shells, clean sounding instrument, brilliant. btw, I had opportunity to play for some time all of like these on video kits, and for metal probably I would choose Pearl shells (but not hardware). They have clean, pretty aggressive and dominant sound. Mapex has the same “aggression”, but their tone is to low for my taste. Tama to me sounds in between of Pearl and Mapex.

Could you tell us which heads were used in this comparison, and whether you think another head, like an Emad, might bring out more low end punch from the kick?
Oh, also, since i'm interested in going for the Pearl, could you tell me if the Pearl clamps are compatible with Tama or Yamaha cymbal stands, plz?
Great comparison anyhows, thanks and all the best!
Hi PJ. So the heads we used on the Toms are all Remo Emperor Clear. I definitely think the Emad could bring out more low end out of the kick if necessary.
About the clamps.: I think they are when mounting on a stand. But the Tom Mount is different though. But I guess you already know that :) //Simon
Anyone interested in getting these drums but who might have some lingering doubts about the seeming lack of lowdown punch should check this promo vid of the kit played by Lester Estelle - the drums, here with Evans heads on and including an Emad on the kick. Killer drummer and song..

Good video
Favourite metal drummers are surely Nicko McBrain and Thomen Stauch.
Hi Daniele. Thanks for sharing. What about a top 5 Iron Maiden Groove Video? //Simon
@@ThomannsDrumBash That would be great!
To an unattentive listener they can seem very similar but there are a lot of variations and sublety in ghosts and details to them.
That is totally true. What would be your favorite songs? //Simon
@@ThomannsDrumBash Hard to tell, there are so many.
Iconically speaking, The Trooper with the signature gallop, The Wicker Man for one example of the foot tecnique, The Longest Day for a more articulated construction in the more recent ones, The Clansman for a different take on the galloping... I mean, I can go on for a while.
@@DennyMala Wow thanks. Uhh...the Wicker Man....such a classic. Love The bell rhythm :-)
Danny carey is my favorite drummer
Tama!
Physical Education should be your standard outro groove
You mean the Animal as Leaders song? 😅 //Simon

Matt griener!! august burns red!
none of these kits doesn’t fits my taste, to be honest... but in my arsenal I have a 12” Mapex Warbird snare and it’s killer instrument for intense music
Thanks for sharing. It is a killer snare drum. What would be your favorite kit for Metal then? //Simon
The Mapex and the Tama ran a real close second! I’ve owned Mapex drums and had no complaints at all but hearing them all played one at a time was rather cool! But to show off the drums why not leave the cymbals in their bags?
Hi Donald. Thanks for the comment. Wouldn't drums without cymbals be half naked? //Simon
Tama starclassic alll dayyyyyyy. That Matt garstka Meinl equillibrium China sound soooo good. For me it’s tama, and then pearl, and then mapex. Not to mention the finish just looks by far the best on the Tama. And the Tama hardware is the best in the game.
Right? It sounds incredible!!! //Simon
Tama for THE METAL
My favorite drummer is Danny carrey
Holz ist nicht unbedingt der Schlüssel ,mit den richtigen Fellen und der Stimmung erreicht man mehr.
TAMA of course
Metaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllll🤟🏽 Igor P. Cavalera...wait does Delta Empire count???
Tama 👍🏽
Of course it counts! Why not? //Simon
@@ThomannsDrumBash cause delta a studio player not from a band, or so it would have you believe, # delta is not entirely from earth 🤭
Tama, pearl, then mapex.
My favourite Drummer a.t.m is Evgeny Novikov from Slaughter to Prevail. He is an absolute Machine on the Drums!
Pearl all the way
Tama
Das tama is halt am schönsten 😜
Alex Rudinger, who until recently played Tama SLP Dynamic Kapur drums - quite similar sounding and priced to those Pearl Session Studio Select drums, so maybe good for comparative purposes too..
Here's a link to his promo for those drums

Yeah, he's up there among the greats.
Can't resist sharing this cover - with him playing on that Dynamic Kapur kit, with that John Tempesta snare. . Awesome!

Tbh, I guess Danny Carey would be my favorite drummer, but it'd be just a tad difficult to put together a similar sounding kit to his, and within the price range of these kits you've demo'd here...!
Would really love to hear you demo that Dynamic Kapur kit, though...
Any chance of that happening, Simon?
Mapex all day!
Pearl Masters Maple would top all those for the same price.
Do you have experienced that? Can't decide between Pearl Studio Birch/Mahogany oder Pearl Masters pure Maple
My favorite metal drummer is Joey Jordison
There is no such thing as the best wood for metal drums.
The sound of the drums is mostly defined by the bearing edges, lugs, mounting hardware, and drumheads.
The Rev
My favorite drummers are Mike Mangini and Mike Portnoy.
They both are incredible players! //Simon
Mike the Master Mangini

1.Pearl 2.Tama 3.Mapex...😊

Thank you!!! //Simon

Tama all day.
I think 80 % of TAMA'S drummers on their roster all play some sort of RAWK!!! That kit is even punchier than most Birch kits I've heard, especially live!
