It really sucks that 3D Arena Fighters don't get any respect and are looked upon as lazy cash grabs. My theory is because there are more bad 3D Arena Fighters than there are good ones, as well as the bad ones make alot more money then they're competent counterparts therefore incentivizing these companies to barely try still make the same garbage for example Jump Force and the one punch Man game are bad 3D Arena Fighters that come off the top of my head, Meanwhile the well made ones only recent gotten good, games like Ninja Storm 4, ones Justice 2, Kill la Kill if, and hopefully the new Demon Slayer game are good examples of developers actually trying and not trying to cash in on a popular franchise.
Unfortunately they're just too basic to be respected. They either actively discourage long comboes or changing up what you're doing, like Demon Slayer, or the possibility for creative gameplay is non-existent due to the game's simplicity, like Naruto Storm or One's Justice. In fact Jump Force I'd say has the biggest focus on an actual deep combat system of any arena fighter I've played, and even that falls into the biggest issue with most arena fighters: style > substance. Taking ridiculous amounts of time for basic attacks, having slow but bombastic movements, supers taking up to 30 seconds of time for sometimes no damage...
They're built too simply. Like, if you look at combo list and it's just "x, x, x, x, tilt, up x, x" that turns a lot of people into more traditional styled games off. Sure, they have room for complexity, but it's nigh impossible for people outside that specific scene to really see it. Kill la Kill if was the only one I saw get any appeal in the wider FGC (and having played it I can see why) but it was also built almost entirely for the casual audience with things like being forced into story mode to unlock certain features.
Most are balanced lore-wise, most have dumb combos and reward you for mashing, your spacing doesn't mean anything, you get meter by standing still and screaming to the sky, they are slow and pretty much party games with little to no execution not depth. So yea, don't expect them to get much respect as competitive fighters. Some are actually just dumb fun and enjoyable as games tho

We pride ourselves on skipping neutral as much as possible and employing only the most degenerate of strategies to gain the edge. It's the closest you are gonna get to an action game/fighting game hybrid. 8:43 Platform Fighters | The only fighting game genre people are not sure is a fighting game or not xD 10:07 Lethal League | Honestly it's a brand new concept and unknown territory, could have potential but we'll see.
This leaves me wondering where the later Touhou fighting games would go. Now, the first three, Immaterial and Missing Power, Scarlet Weather Rhapsody and Hisoutensoku, would more easily fall somewhere between 2D and anime fighters (I'm probably not well-enough versed in fighting games to be able to fully make a judgment on where in that range, but would guess the latter due to the existence of an air dash?) - though they can be quite a bit more projectile-focused, what with characters having buttons for "melee" "light shot" and "heavy shot" instead of the usual assortment of melee attacks that usually only produce projectiles with special commands. Hopeless Masquerade, Urban Legend in Limbo, and Antinomy of Common Flowers are fairly similar in many ways too, but have this added element of being fully _aerial_ fighters. There is no ground, there is no crouching, there's just flight, essentially jumping above _or below_ the default height. I guess part of it also overlaps with platform fighters, with the extra emphasis on positioning and less complex inputs for moves. Wonder if "aerial fighter" could constitute its own subgenre, or if this is too close to those aforementioned ones?
This brings up a couple questions: Do wrestling games count as a sub-genre of fighting game? How about beat 'em ups? or (maybe being a stretch) Hack 'n Slash games?
Hack n slash and beatemups are different genres than fighting games and wrestling games are sports games and share more with something like fifa or madden than fighting games
Pokken is definitely my favorite Fighter, even if the 3D part of it comes more from arena fighters than its namesake it also handles that much better than all of the arena fighters I've played, it then transitions into a 2D phase which much more like traditional Fighters, taking a bit of inspiration from both Tekken and Street Fighter, making it well balanced with a good level of depth and accessibility.
0:15 THANK YOU! I feel like that plot was originally created to stray from the "cliché" purely happy ending romance movie but now its so overdone i feel its the new cliché in itself. If there's one thing I learned through buying and playing all sorts of fighting games over the last couple of years it's that I hate links. I loved Guilty Gear, Skullgirls and Killer Instinct while I bounced right off Street Fighter and King of Fighters. Anyway wouldn't stuff like Bushido Blade and Hellish Quart be a separate category?
Fighting Games are really diverse and really have branched out in variety since the home consoles could match the arcade machines. Then there's weird hybrid fighters such as King Of Fighters with it's technical gameplay and in-depth jump arcs, Divekick where's there's quite literally two buttons and players die in one hit, Kill La Kill IF which is one of the few good Arena Fighters, Sonic The Fighters that's a 3D Fighter but plays like a 2D one with some interesting techniques involving walls, Sailor Moon S basically being (as a wise Core A Gaming once said) "Unregulated Waifu Cockfighting" and also made by Arc System Works funnily enough, Fatal Fury housing two different lanes to fight in, Wavejammers- . . .wait, is that even a fighting game? A sports game? Whatever, it's cool and something completely different just like Lethal League (tho sadly no music by the legend that is Hideki). Anyways fighting games are cool. There's something for everyone, from easy fighters like Fantasy Strike, Smash Ultimate & Dragon Ball Fighterz to more complex ones like Tekken, King Of Fighters & whatever a "Melee" is. You'll have fun so long as you find the right community and game & give them a chance.
Exactly that's what I meant by fighting games. Not that you stare at each other and jump over each other with combos. I want to fight like on some red dead redemption hand to hand type of platform.
for those saying I should play Dark souls PVP, not a bad Idea, but it was built as a ARPG first, and a multiplayer arena battle game later; as such, you have to basically play the whole game before you can make a PVP viable build at meta level. Maybe I should try For Honor, but I was expecting something a little more 1 on 1, rather than a battleground; there are a lot of dishonest, random elements in games like that
I know you didn't talk about plat-form fighters without talking about the Ultimate superior platform fighter Super Smash Bros that literally started the whole genre.
Most 3d arena fighters aren't that good but I do think dismissing the entire thing isn't right well most are shit but my hero's one justice does seem to be kinda good at the very least and gundam vs is probably the best 3d arena anime fighter in existence i think those two elevate it enough to where the genre is like meeh but god damn was the naruto ultimate vs series bad

Huh, I always thought versus fighters were 3v3 while 2v2 games were tag fighters. Or are tag fighters just versus fighters without assists like some of the KoF games? I also always called versus fighters "team" fighters... Is that just me?
Tag games are just games where you can literally tag in and out your characters on the fly. Marvel vs Capcom, DBFZ, BBTAG, Power Rangers, KOF 2003 & 11, SFxT, Tekken Tag, etc. Versus fighters are just anime games in denial. Nah, the term generally refers to the X vs Capcom games: Marvel vs Capcom, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, etc. They have lots of mobility options, long combos, brutal mixups, tag mechanics, and assists. But really the main difference between a Versus Fighter and an Anime Tag-team Fighter is just the subject material. DBFZ would be a tag fighter and an anime fighter that also shares a lot in common with the Versus games, but is its own unique take on that formula. Capcom vs SNK would NOT be a versus fighter or a tag fighter because it lacks the mobility options, tag mechanics, and assists. A team game or fighter is just a game where you pick a team, rather than a single character. All versus games and tag games are inherently team games, but there are also team games that are neither of those things. Most of the KOF games would fall under that category, as well as the previously mentioned CvS games.

Just curious what subgenre is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle? Would it be classified as "garbage"? Haha. I don't think it's a standard anime fighter, it lacks airdashes and isn't completely 2d. I'd say it's kinda unique but... as much as I like it for the franchise... it kinda sucks as a fighter. I still have a hard time figuring out what genre it'd go into though.
Honestly I just looked up this game and ive never seen it before so I'm not the best person to ask, I'd probably say anime as it looks like it has a bunch of weird features that no other fighting game really has plus the aesthetic but honestly without playing it I can't give you a perfect answer, sorry about that
A huge problem with this video is that it put anime fighters as a separate genre combining your shonen brand arena fighters and the 2D ones like under night All Star Battle is an arena fighter, utilizing a 3D plane like Tekken But yeah it's garbage as most anime arena fighters are
I felt like I should have brought up arena fighters somewhere and most of them share anime aestetich but yeah clumping them together may have been confusing, thanks for the feedback :D
Can you classify Lethal League as a projectile fighter? I mean, you’re fighting with a projectile, but it’s also not technically part of a characters kit. And then, could arms be classified under this too? You have big ass arms which are like projectiles, but they also aren’t. Is projectile fighter even a sub genre?
all aspects of gameplay that were placed as aspects of anime fighters exist in other older 2D games( Kof and Mvc2 for example). I still don't understand what defines the "AnimeFighters" subgenre, as it doesn't make sense to me because there doesn't seem to be any aspect that brings changes in gameplay that are unique to the so-called "anime fighters" . Fighting games are divided into 2 types which are 2D/2.5D and 3D, what we see after that are the sub-genres which are platform fighters that borrow aspects from platform games, arena fighters which would be a sub-genre of 3D fighters and tag fighters that may be a sub-genre because it brings changes in mechanics by switching characters mid-fight or calling in assists. Now tell me: WHICH ASPECTS OF THE GAME THAT UNIQUELY DEFINE AN ANIME FIGHTER?!?!?!?!? Just aesthetics? Being from ArcSysWorks? Just kidding hehehe. I really don't know and wanted answers.

You forgot about the greatest fighting game of all time....... Divekick.
6:08 Wait I'm out of the loop, what is that? It looks amazing.
It's DNF Duel. It will be released in summer 2022.
There is an official TH-cam channel about this game, you should check it out if you are interested and if you don't know about it yet.
I think leathal league is in the "Sports Fighter" with Windjammers
how does lethal league work? is it like smash but with funny ball?
Hit funny ball, if funny ball hit other player they have a very die
thanks
@@GekkoSquirrel and no weak shit
such an underrated channel
Bro 0:11 I was using this background for one of my games...
Can you talk about games like wind jammers and fatal fury? They break the molds of traditional 2d fighting games
I'm planning on taking a look into fatal fury/Kof in the coming months, I'll take a look at wind jammers too if I get the chance :)
@@GekkoSquirrel cool! i think that windjammers was the precursor of lethal league and it's just a fun game that deserve more attention (i'm hyped for windjammers 2!)
Where does KoF enters for you?
Just curious what subgenre is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle?
Would it be classified as "garbage"? Haha.
I don't think it's a standard anime fighter, it lacks airdashes and isn't completely 2d.
I'd say it's kinda unique but... as much as I like it for the franchise... it kinda sucks as a fighter.
I still have a hard time figuring out what genre it'd go into though.
Honestly I just looked up this game and ive never seen it before so I'm not the best person to ask, I'd probably say anime as it looks like it has a bunch of weird features that no other fighting game really has plus the aesthetic but honestly without playing it I can't give you a perfect answer, sorry about that
A huge problem with this video is that it put anime fighters as a separate genre combining your shonen brand arena fighters and the 2D ones like under night
All Star Battle is an arena fighter, utilizing a 3D plane like Tekken
But yeah it's garbage as most anime arena fighters are
I felt like I should have brought up arena fighters somewhere and most of them share anime aestetich but yeah clumping them together may have been confusing, thanks for the feedback :D
Ho yeah you don't need to remember combos. Behold my steev montage.
There sure is a lack of SNK in this video.
I guess you could? It is kinda a weird position where lethal league isnt like any other game so it's hard to put it in a sub genra unfortunately
Do you watch MMA? That “I don’t blame you”! reminded me of Dana
Holy shit this is good. Youre funny as fuck
What subgenres are games like Garouden? And UFC franchise?
They are NOT fighting games 💀
all aspects of gameplay that were placed as aspects of anime fighters exist in other older 2D games( Kof and Mvc2 for example).
I really don't know and wanted answers.
so, frame links is basically buffering your input/"pre-ordering" the next move?
hey arcana hearts is fun I don't care if the FBI comes to my house
6 months later after this video came out you said you would be streaming Lethal League but you aren't streaming it.........
:')
My top anime fighters are melty blood and pretty much anything with arc systems works logo on it also skull girls if that counts
Ah3 is probably one of the most mechanically rich games out there, but holy hell the aesthetic turns people off fast.
Tag fighters are a sub genre of vs ? How about KoF? Is it traditional 2d or vs? What about the simulators like ufc?
3:54 *SONUVABEEEECH!!*
Does KOF go in your Team Fighters category?
Tone down your volume, whenever you want to emphasize something you don't need to blow my ears off; a small increase is effective enough
Awesome video, but quick question: what's the "special to special cancel" game shown at 6m10s? Looks fantastic!
@Gus Vidalis Thanks! Called DNF Duel (Dungeon & Fighter Duel)
th-cam.com/video/sEUMKQnMWZ8/w-d-xo.html
Oh yeah, garbage is my favourite genre of films
Combos matter in plataform fighters however you need to be cteative doing combos you can learn on the internet but you can also create some
Edit: (i am not hating on you i am jus adding information to the video)
I didn't see any 3d fighting game in your video which is totally 3d some examples are Urban Reign, Absolver, Anarchy Reigns.
Sorry I'm late
But have u played Soul Calibur and Tekken? Thats what he's showing u
@@neon-lake Yes I can understand that, because in soulcaliber and tekken, we can move in 3d space but the camera is still 2d. I mean Why people don't even consider Urban reign as a fighting game? Its very underrated. Urban reign lacks nothing if you ask me. And Urban Reign is completely 3d game with tpp behind the back view.
Btw u can walljump when ur in special fall in rivals
I'm very curious on where you would put KOF
that rivals gameplay was painful to watch
what would you classify Paint The Town Red and We Who Are About to Die as, these games are clearly fighting games. to me it just looks like your covering the one main genre for 10 minutes
I don’t think that’s how you spell genre.
BTW, great vid!
Sorry I'm not that good at spelling, thank you though
You’re welcome! Also, do you play King of Fighters? With 15 coming out soon, I’d love to see a video on the series!
I’m sorry, but how did he manage to drop this??????? IT WAS A FREE KILL 7:06
insightful
what was that game that you mentioned that we don't know if it has special to special canceling it looks dope?
That's the Dungeon Fighter Online game that ArcSys is allegedly working on. We haven't heard any news about it in a long time, though.
What is divekick?
The only arena fighters I like are Pokken and Dissidia
Why does it feels like ultimate doesn't exist ...
A bit of a nitpick but when you talk about games with canceling you say “any arcsys game” this could be confusing to someone as you mentioned how grandblue was a links game. Nothing major just smthing I noticed
Ahem
_For Honor_
I rest my case
What about boxing and mma games like UFC 4 and fight night? Would that be 3d fighting games
so, where does Pokken Tournament fall into?
Where does Killer Instinct fit in?
1:20 when it comes to traditional fighters I always stick to Street Fighter
what if on stream you teach some random people from chat a fighting game they wanna learn that u know to the best of your ability and just put that out on youtube as easy content/useful stuff for other ppl wanting to get into some of these games
💀
What about beat em ups like Streets Of Rage and Final Fight?
What game is it at 1:35?
sorry voor askin
and this video is pretty good
It's called Tough Love Arena, it's a browser based game that has rollback, it's pretty good and I'm probably going to talk about it in the future. Toughlovearena.com is where u can play it btw
What's the blonde girl in the blue jacket on the thumbnail from
Lethal league. You're welcome
he maid a taipo at the itnro HAHAHAHAH
what game is shown at 6:09?? anyone know?
DNF: duel
imma buy marvel vs capcom 3 its on sale thanks for recommendation
If your reading this, Your thoughts on Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3
It’s MAHVEL BABY!!!
What’s the game at 6:10? Thank you
Also very interested.
@@psychoshonen Managed to find it out, the name of the game is DNF: Duel
@@kamalm8170 Fantastic, thank you very much!
@@psychoshonen No worries 🙂
Where does For Honor fall? It's technically a fighting game
Would wrestling games count as a subgenre of fighting game?
More of a sports game
