I worked as a DJ in LA in the 70's and 80's, and I had the honor of playing music of my own choice after midnight. I tried in my own little way to win my audience over to Cold Chisel's music. At least my listeners got the hype of this band down under. I still have my original copies of Cold Chisel records; admittedly, the Australian version of _East_ is one I enjoy the most. I got to interview many Australian musicians in my day, including Little River Band, Men At Work, INXS, Real Life, Mental As Anything, The Church and so many more. The band that surprised me was The Birthday Party, who were developing a bad reputation in the US for their violent and anarchic shows. They were actually nice guys! The most intimidating was Chrissy Amphlette from Divinyls. A sexy and intelligent young lady with piecing brown eyes hidden behind a fringe; she seemed like she was waiting for me to ask a stupid question, just so she can pounce on me. I enjoyed interviewing the Aussie groups more than the British groups. There was just something different and real about the Aussies.

Cold chisel are the greatest band ever and how lucky for you to interview INXS I hope you talked to Michael as he was the best frontman of any band from Australia and is greatly missed and Chrissy would have intimidated me as well but I would have been in awe of her

If you look into Chrissie's upbringing, and the general treatment of female lead vocalists by the music industry in those days, you get an idea of why she may have been somewhat defensive, and that an opportunistic mindset often goes with that.

Cold Chisel are one of those bands that, if you get them, you realise they're superlative, and then find it hard to understand why others don't appreciate them the way you do.

If you’re interested there’s two 30 minute videos of, the Australian Made concert, 1987, that have a lengthy interview with Hutchins & Amphlett together. It’s funny, laid back & pretty cool.
There’s also an hour 20min video of the concert. Search, Australian Made concert 1987 Hutchins Amphlett, on YT.

Cold Chisels genre is Aussie Pub Rock. The live scene for music was huge from the late 60s, 70s, and 80s bands would tour the country playing sometimes 10 shows a week in Australian Pubs. The crowd was rowdy and a band that couldn’t entertain them quickly just didn’t survive. Pub Rock has a working man edge to it, it became almost the voice of the generation expressing the dissatisfaction and frustration of the times at least in the late 70s when CC were touring. They became the vehicle for at least my generation to express themselves. “Star Hotel” is a great example of that frustration. Hello to you from the beautiful State in Australia - Tasmania

This was one of their more popular songs and much more of a pop song. They covered a lot of genres from hard rock, ballads, rock/reggae, blues, rockabilly, and pop. The chorus was "cheap wine and a 3 day growth".

Musically, Cold Chisel does a wide variety of music. All five band members wrote songs and they started by playing pubs so there's a massive variety of songs -- from gorgeous heart-breaking ballads all the way to really hard rock. Don't just listen to one or two songs and think you have them pegged because you won't. Oh, and they have two lead singers with contrasting voices (Jimmy and Mossy, their guitar player). So far, you have only seen Jimmy sing. There are songs where Mossy does lead and Jimmy backs him up -- and they are GREAT songs. There's all sorts to recommend. Maybe the video of Saturday Night? And then for most of their other songs you should do live.

This song may be a little deeper than you realised. Don Walker( Keybords and main songwriter for this album “East” realeased in 1980, said it was about leaving a high paying lifestyle and the trapping of that when his girlfriend overdosed and how he is now trying to deal with his life in the wake of that loss. Take a look at the lyrics to this and most CC songs they usually tell a story.

This is pure Aussie Pub Rock , its a broad genre at its best when performed live . Often with Aussie bands the ones that made it in the USA weren't as big in Australia as the ones that didnt . We like our music a bit raw or unpolished, its why Pub Rock was such a dominant force in Oz .

It’s a particular genre of Aussie music mostly from the late 70s to 80s, called Pub Rock - basically just pretty “raw” music that tends to sound even better live than recorded.

It's sort of ironic that you said they remind you of The Little River Band, and you were wondering if that group got known out of America.
The Little River Band came from Australia and was of the same era.
You need to play Bow River, a real classic from Cold Chisel. For me, this song is emblemic of this band.
And as someone has already said, this is of a genre of music called Pub Rock.
Cold Chisel also has a good sprinkling of blues and soul mixed in with their style of rock.
I recommend jumping down this rabbit hole because you could be about to go on an interesting musical journey.
Maybe I'll be the 5000th subscriber.

The guy singing this is Jimmy Barnes (Van Halen were considering him to be David Lee Roth's replacement, but went with Sammy Hagar). Jimmy Barnes also sang Khe Sahn, but the long curly hair made him look a little different. I rather short-hair Jimmy Barnes. The other guy that sings for Cold Chisel is Ian Moss (guitarist).

Looking at his face says it all,
    "Cheap Wine and three-day growth".
Hit the alcohol and looking scruffy and unkempt while recovering from a toxic relationship that he got out of dodge from, chilling out by the ocean front.
As everyone knows the vast majority of Australia's population is around the edges of the country and we have a deep love and respect for the ocean and water in general because of it.

I had to laugh when you said the song reminds you of your son, with his three day growth. The song and video reminds me of being a young guy in the early 80's. A few of us had little direction, and had mates that were either dead or dying due to substance abuse. The house seen in this clip looks like a typical house shared by the average young Aussie dropkicks. There were a lot of pubs, and a lot of great bands to see live. You could work during the day and head to a local at night to see the next big thing (Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel, INXS, Rose Tattoo, AC/DC, Divinyls - all came from the pub rock road). If you had a very good Friday night, you too would be walking around the house the next day like Jimmy is in the video, while your dropkick mates are sleeping on the couch or on the floor. And although that may not sound like a unique experience for a young person, it was quite prevelent in Australia during this time. The negative was the punch ups, the nowhere-ness and the deaths.
This song and its video still haunts me to this day.

*Cold Chisel - My Baby - Countdown - Remastered Austech 4K* is the next that should be tried.

I think you two make a lovely couple, and I'm pleased to see you take to Chisel with an open ear. Jimmy Barnes' face was a little obscured in the Khe Sanh vide; nothing that a good haircut couldn't fix. Sadly, Barnsey would grow his hair back and become our national screamer for the next 30 odd years. The video captures what a lot of us were like in Australia in the early 80's. Then Paul Hogan decided to tell the world that we looked like a caricature that he created in his head.
But we were actually like Jimmy Barnes in this video.. shirtless for half the day, hungover and whingy... having a film of a chicken fight projected on to our lounge room blinds... looking at God knows what through binoculars...
I used to really relate to this song, and now I listen to it and I can't help but think ''get a job you loser!''.. just like my dad did.

From a catologue of hundreds , just 4 live performances can show you the band.
    1) Georgia .....an impromptu solo by Ian Moss during a live concert when leed singer, Jimmy Barnes , had to run backstage for a pit stop to please nature.
    2) When The War is Over......a ballad written by drummer Steve Prestwiche about a failed relationship.
    3) Bow River......from their 2003 reunion concert.
    4) Wild Thing.....a cover of a very covered song, but the wildest most feral performance ever, and many believe better than the Jimmi Hendrix cover.
Performed during their Last Stand tour, 1983, as they were breaking up due to the many fist fights within the band.

Little River Band was an Australian band too....
When you drive into Melbourne from the South West regional city of Geelong on the Geelong Freeway you drive past a sign saying 'Little River'.
Cold Chisel is the sound of my young adult years. Cold Chisel weren't afraid of raising social issues like returned servicemen in Khe Sahn and When The War Is Over, abortion in Choir Girl. Police brutality in Star Hotel and Four Walls. Existential angst in Breakfast At Sweethearts, Shipping Steel. Tonnes of great songs.

Cold Chisel were a difficult band to define.
They could and did play many different styles......essentially a pub ( bar ) rock band, all their members wrote / composed 1st Class ballads that were the essence of their recording success, while their tough, roughouse rock sound and image was the essential fabric as Australia's most popular hard rock band ever.
From the start in the mid 1970's, the piano player was the musical leader and guru, and yet.......they debuted as a Heavy Metal band, then folk, country etc before finding success as a rock band with 2 leed singers and front men.
One singer has a very sweet voice and is also the leed guitarist ( Ian Moss ).
The other is the wild man Jimmy Barnes.. ...who sings in at least 4 different styles and voices.
He also has a sweet voice for rock, soul and gospel but prefers to belt while crushing granite with his throat.
Sometimes when Mossy takes leed vocals, Jimmy's backing vocals can sound a bit like an Aretha Franklin type doing soft back ups... .. and then ge steps foreard and lifts the roof off with a chain saw type vocal. lol

I think This and That JC should try 4 or 5 Cold Chisel songs before trying any Jimmy Barnes or Ian Moss solo material. After trying out Chisel songs, I suggest checking out INXS & Jimmy Barnes' ''Good Times'' and then Jimmy Barnes/John Farnham ''When Something's Wrong With My Baby''. I suggest that the next Cold chisel songs should be as follows:
Cold Chisel - My Baby Austech
Cold Chisel - Bow River (Bruce Barber)
Cold Chisel - Wild Thing (Last Stand) (Glenn Thomas)
Cold Chisel - When The War Is Over [LIVE] (Cold Chisel's official channel)

Cold chisel is a great band that sang a variety of styles. Nearly every member of the band could sing and they often took turns, but Jimmy Barnes was there second lead singer. I recommend you try "bow river"and "Yakusa Girls" if you like rock or "when the war is over" for easy listening. TO the people calling this couple ''ignorant'' and ''arrogant'', I ask you to just cut it out because they are doing what many reactions refuse to do. They're checking out what they're not familiar with, and that is much better than the usual reaction channels that refuse to venture outside the classic rock circuit, and instead, pretend to not know songs that everybody knows.
I have seen enough old Americans claiming to hear The Eagles for the first time, and then reply with a ''oh no no no, I'm fine thank you'' when Cold Chisel is suggested to them. Don't punish these people for checking out Cold Chisel. That's just ignorant.

Ha yes Jimmy Barnes sang both Khe Sanh. Cold Chisle had 2 singer that were in the band at the same time Jimmy Barnes and Ian Moss. You0 do know the Little River Band is an Australian band until the late 90's when most of the original band had gone and the got stabbed in the back by the American replacements and lost the rights to name the name of the band they started, for a while were preforming as the real little river band. But yes the Little River Band started in Melbourne in 1975.

  • @allenjones5525

For Pete's sake the Little River Band is AUSTRALIAN...named after the The Little River between Geelong and Melbourne in the State of Victoria. The band touring now around the States now does not have any original members of the band in it and some the original members of LRB have been somewhat pissed off with the situation. No way is Cold Chisel like the Little River Band, much harder.... one would say LRB more in the Eagles wheel house rather than Cold Chisel. By the way CC did attempt to break in the States but the record executives wanted to change the look and sound of the band so the members of CC said f**k it and headed back to Australia. You can get the jist of the story from CC song 'You Got Nothing I Want.

It is the legendary Jimmy Barnes who has just recovered from heart surgery. Request Forever Now and Bow River (live circle version) which will blow your Sox off cobber!

You're getting to the edge of the aussie rabbit hole...teetering on the brink...and along comes John Farnham and you just fall right down the hole. Try John and Jimmy Barnes doing When Something is Wrong with My Baby. Dare ya! Oh...by the way John sang lead for LRB for a while after Glenn left the band.

You appear to think Little River Band is American. Nope, Australian, from Melbourne.
Cold Chisel Bow River. and/or Wild Thing should be next.
