Saw Chisel at the Arcaba Hotel 1979 - my world shifted on it axis, I realised something, but not sure what it was. I was a year 12 kid, 18yrs old. They had urgency, danger, and good lyrics. It was like being hit by a train. My ears were ringing for a week. I have seen many, Dylan, Bowie, Cave, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Wayne Shorter…many... some were masters, other great, others, entertaining, and others boring. Yet, to this day, that Chisel concert is still in me. I can make myself feel it at times. It was a first baptism into adulthood. One of he first feeling of having agency and sensing raw excitement and a touch of danger, emersed in a block of black cladd bodies, mostly of bikers older. Yet, I felt no threat, we were all there for Chisel. Us lame, pmply kids, the bikers, the old stoners, the young women, the suburban boys and girls. We were part of something in 79. Now I am creeping into the new ‘old’ and I love life yet I often think of that night. The dense smokey air, the dank, dark and the blast of power and rage from Chisel that ignited something in me as an 18yr old, something that I have kept as a talisman of memory.

Amazing. I've seen them three times, all in the new era. I didn't get the chance in the old, but the awesome power is there, and I don't mean the noise, but the experience. They are something else when they play live.

Would have been there that night, one of many seeing Cold Chisel playing around Adelaide. Buying jugs of beer instead of glasses and for many of us, it was a catch-up with so many old friends who were always there when Chisel played. Memories that will never fade.

I totally agree! Their greatest song. I always thought that, although many would choose the hits. It is an epic showpiece blues, with gorgeous poetry, jazzy walker chords under jimmy's balad section, and a whammy outro. Anyone who bags jimmy barnes - point them to the album recording of this timeless track. As classy as Oz rock got.

Anyone who hasn’t seen Mossy live, you must. He is just as great today. The last bastion of live Aussie pub rock.
We didn’t know how spoilt we were in the 70s and 80s, the greatest music in the world.

Although I’ve never seen Cold Chisel live, I did see Ian Moss when he went solo back in the late 1980’s , and he is great live, great guitarist and vocalist.
And as for Australian pub rock, I was raised on good old fashioned Aussie pub rock ie.Midnight Oil, The Angels, Screaming Jets, Rose Tattoo etc, and I have to say, Australia produces the best rock musicians in the world.

It's star-crossed, looking back, how Don Walker's brilliance as a writer and musician merged somehow with the stunning talents of Steve Prestwich, Phil Small, Ian Moss and Jimmie Barnes.
Yes, the others made those songs live and they also brought their own beautiful songs to the band, but that is the engine room of popular music.
    No song, NO BUSINESS.
It's fair to say that Walker is a writer for the Ages. He's as good as anyone else from any era.

I was 13 when I 1st heard this... I'm now really fkn old, & still love it..I still wait for 6:26
    .
City life is closing in on me
The way things go, thirty years,
    Bus timetable'll be my elergy
Up at seven every working day
Pay comes in, pay goes out
    It's a week-by-week charade
    General panic in the marketplace
    Boss found hung in office
    Could not stand the pace
And as the peak-hour traffic jams below
Someone gets the story, somebody spread the rumour
    People come and go
Wandered down along the river last night
Call me romantic, I say I couldn't sleep
Until the first-light struck me down
Padding homeward on the inside lane
Early morning, freeway's cool and quiet
    Dodging rubber stains
People talking in a seaside bar
    I ain't sentimental, but Lord
Sometimes I get that gypsy urge to travel far
You know I'll disappear some long weekend
    Find a mangrove landscape
    Stretch…

I can remember when I got into Clod Chisel as a teenager a long time ago. Exploring their back catalogue and discovering so many great songs. This was always one of my favorites. Always loved Barnes quiet interlude in the middle and then exploding into such an soulful climax its a beautifully written song

  • @madbrowndog4887

First heard Cold Chisel (Khe Sanh) on the day their first album was released, just before the 8:30am news when I was parking my car, with just minutes to make it to work on time. Stuff that, i listened to the end, then took a few more minutes in silence to process what I'd heard, before rocking up late to the job. And I ducked out at smoko and bought the album. One Long Day has always been up there with my favourite Chisel songs. I love how it seems to be 2 different songs, stitched together with some blistering guitar work by Mossy.
One of my favourite memories from Chisel gigs is a slow, bluesy version of "Superstition". Another was when a house DJ finished up his set with The Who's "Who Are You" and the sound guy gradually mixed out The Who, and I realised that Chisel had taken over the song, just as the curtain rolled back.

    • @BenjaminBarnes
      @BenjaminBarnes  ปีที่แล้ว

Great memories mate! Didn't know they covered Superstition. Did you ever tape record any gigs?

    • @madbrowndog4887
      @madbrowndog4887 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@BenjaminBarnes Sorry for the late reply. No, never taped any gigs, sadly. IIRC Superstition may not have actually been part of their set, just an impromptu warm up jam that got out of hand (much like Who Are You, but without the DJ segue). I've never heard anybody do Superstition that way - a bit slower, with the rhythm "swung".
Fun Fact: "Shipping Steel" is my car crash song. Over a period of about 18mths in the late 70's, I had three crashes (only one of which was my fault). Shipping Steel was playing on the cassette player each time. 45 years later, I still get nervous if it comes on the radio while I'm driving.

This is what I'm talking about ....
You hear that clarity of there sound alone. The playing is worked between them with perfect arrangements, and sounds of the boys part's. Who's, what ,where ,and when ..
Bon Scott quote ... It's a long way to the top if you wanna rockn roll .
As to our perth scene at the pubs .
I loved every moment just about ,and i know all of us that were in working bands and still are today perhaps. We enjoyed and love that feeling of connecting together as a group to become as one , to entertain other's to make them feel good and happy .. It's one of the most pleasant times in life most times. Even though it's quite a lot of hard work to play at good gigs and venue's with good bands .
But it's so worthwhile ,no matter at what level other bands are at that we play with at a venue' is that they have it together and can play well, managers can form a bill to performe our sets 45 mins to sometimes 1 half hour's of playing time nearly two three sometimes . Other times rhythm section do double header's as we're a power plant being in a couple of bands as well ... we are well oiled and versatile , and fluency will flow with ease.

I saw the Stones at Randwick race course, the Beatles live, Eric Burdon and the Animals and Montserrat but they are kiddies compared to Cold Chisel with Mighty Mossy and Bonkers -blind Barnsey.

I feel as though Mossy is better now than this early video. This video looks a bit like he is doing his work experience placement. I last saw him in Newcastle in Dec '19. His playing and voice really blew me away. I don't understand why his youtube channel doesn't have a million subs.

SO awesome, but why are cameramen so fucking useless during guitar solos? We don't want to see Ian's head/face at solo time - we want to see his hands/guitar as WELL!
