- Over the last few years, there is a visible and sustained pushback against Hindi imposition in Karnataka. Before that, the agitation against Hindi imposition was more visible in Tamil Nadu.
Karnataka’s pushback on Hindi imposition is more than an emotional issue. From blackening Hindi boards in metro stations to social media campaigns, the pushback is visible both online and on the streets. This is sometimes dismissed by many, even many in the mainstream media as parochialism or language chauvinism. There are real concerns about the growing dominance of Hindi in public services, education, and employment, where non-Hindi speakers are at a disadvantage.
In this week’s Let Me Explain, Pooja Prasanna breaks down the anti-Hindi imposition movement in Karnataka, highlighting the core issues of linguistic rights, regional identity, and the growing calls for equal opportunities in both education and jobs.

The Indian government should learn from the history of Bangladesh and Pakistan. The Pakistan administration tried to force Bangladeshi people to speak Urdu language in 1952. Which is the beginning for Bangladesh to separate from Pakistan. Respecting other cultures and language is always a way to live peacefully and with harmony. The Indian administration should understand it's a union of states which used to run individually before India's creation. If the administration wants to force culture to one another then it will be chaos. It will create problems and will take place on deep roots which may cause unstable India if not today then tomorrow for sure.
The Bengalis fought against Urdu but they tried imposing their language on the Assamese people in Assam and failed. Now they're doing the same to thei tribals in Tripura.

What we follow is the right one. If one needs to learn additional languages, one can learn outside.
Same way english has been impossed on us. Its not even our local language, most of the time student memories the concept instead of understanding bcz of English imposition. We are not allowed to give interview in hindi, if we speak then they look down on us. Majority of india 🇮🇳 speaks, understand hindi despite of their local language so "Hindi " is a uniting language . Why most of famous and popular youtubers are making videos in hindi ? We north indians 🇮🇳 don't fight with each other for language, we also have our own state language and we respect each others reigional language and speak in hindi to understand each other while a person from tamil nadu can't talk with person from Kerala or karnataka (except if they speak in English) . U expect people who goes to south india to speak ur language from day 1 ? If u force them they will not learn but naturally they will addopt to local language. I support 3 language implementation in schools (Hindi , english, religional language)

No, this is bullshit. English must NOT be a link language for Indians. No other nation needs a FOREIGN language to unite its people. Not even African countries. Indians have NOT tried to find a compromise between Hindi and other Indian language. They haven't tried making two Indian languages as link languages. Indians do not value their own Indian languages as much as English. This is why SHIT Hindi exists. Nobody speaks proper Hindi. Even Urdu speakers speak Urdu properly compared to most Indians.

So, the central government is saying people from tamilnadu/non Hindi states should learn Hindi . so that, people who are migrating from Hindi speaking will feel comfortable and it will also easy for them do election rally. argument that learning Hindi will bring economic opportunists is very illogical if that means up, Bihar wouldn't be one of poorest parts of their country infact in the entire world . instead, central government should invest in teaching good quality English(like native English speaker) to every Indian like Singapore rather than Hindi . At least that would avoid lot of Indians struggling(including mine) to speak in English or they are forced to learn to survive in today job market and that will also bring economic opportunities.
Edit: I'm willing to accept Hindi as a replacement of English if Uttar Pradesh economy reaches the level Germany and they should do it while having Hindi as a medium of instruction.

Hindi influx in Gujarat, Maharashtra and South will make these language and cultural identity secondary in future. These folks don't speak local language even after a decade of migration. In public sector banks in my place majority staff is from north and they only speak Hindi local ppl not understand hindi.
Teaching mother tongue is up to the parents. For example I lived all over the country but never my home state however my parents taught me the language.
And if still a language fades out then so be it, it's survival of the fittest.

I have not experienced any difficulty for not knowing Hindi. Now I am on a holiday in 🇺🇸 USA. My dear friend pl try to understand that Hindi is not India and India is not only Hindi.

As someone living in Norway let me give a neutral perspective to things. The divide between the north and the south has increased twice fold since BJP took over the reign in 2024. People from South now only see North as a backward region entangled in a medieval mindset. Most of this stems from the political values in north where politicians pander for votes on the basis of caste and religion because they know people from north especially states like UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and MP are not very educated.
Then there is also a huge influx of migrants from these states to metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. People from Bangalore don’t want to end up like Delhi and Mumbai where crime rate has risen because of migrants. Plus, these northern belt of states I talked about still has an exploding population and the government has failed to address it.

Hindi is an artificial language constructed by British East India company chiefly by Dr John Borthwick Gilchrist into Hindustani and later to Hindi by Arya samaj insiders like Ram Chandra Shukla, Bharatendu Harishchandra and Jaishankar prasad et al.

India needs a common language and I feel it should be English and state languages should get their deserved respect. India was colonised, it’s the truth nobody can change, we might as well accept it and use it to our benefit than doing cheap politics around it using a language to divide people. If this continues then, It is rightly said here that it’s the common people who are suffering.
My mother tongue is marathi, Im married to a Tamilian and living in Karnataka. My hindi is decent since I learnt it in school and grew up in Mumbai. At work and home I use English. Now I understand both Tamil and Kannada to an extent where I can manage basic daily life sentences but I still struggle with proper conversation. When I have to have a conversation, I don’t have any other option but to switch to hindi or English. I keep getting so much hate and have often been called Hindi imposing North Indian in a very derogatory way by auto/cab drivers, house help, property broker, even husband’s extended family etc. in their own language thinking I don’t understand it, but I do. I feel hurt, sometimes even unsafe. Yet I don’t blame them as I understand their feeling of oppression. Marathi uses same script as Hindi still my Hindi is ok at best, why should I expect someone who doesn’t have same script neither common origin to learn it. My point is, a complex country like India should have English and the respective state’s language as compulsory so that there is an equal ground for everyone. Else this hatred will grow and people of India will keep suffering.

Kannada people aka Kannadigas are generally very warm welcoming.. If you’re seeing outrage, it’s because they have been pushed to their limits. People come to Bangalore, take advantage of all the opportunities there, some even live there for decades, and refuse to learn even three words of the local language. Also, people have to understand, that south Indians are far better at speaking English than Hindi.
If you come as a visitor, it’s one thing if you come to live in another region learn the languages, it’s common courtesy.
The primary problem with some Hindi speakers, is the presume that everybody else in India speaks Hindi. That’s a level of imperiousness that upsets others.

Every state should compulsory their local language in school
being a south indian. I know 3 languages kannada, English and hindi. While I go to other states like tamil nadu or andra pradesh. I don't go on speaking with any of three i know and expect them to speak with me in that language. I may start the conversation in any one language but i try to understand what they are saying in thier language and learn their language to survive.
I've seen many people from north india come here and start talking in hindi and expect us to talk in hindi they don't even try to learn the local language. If everyone starts talking in hindi to accommodate them, then the local language will die
I believe if you are settled in a region. Then you must learn local language to some extent. If you are tourist. Then don't. We must embrace our Unique identities and dont get influenced by these politicians. India is known for Unity in Diversity! The lady who was screaming "I will not talk in Kannada" said that in English. I don't think she was imposing Hindi. I don't think many middle-class or high earning IT and corporate employees in Bangalore have any problem with using English all the time. But even that's a problem for some uneducated, and even some educated, Kannadigas.
Nowhere else in the country is not knowing a state language a morality issue. It doesn't become a moral duty of a migrant to know Gujarati, Marathi or Punjabi if you move to Gujarat, Maharashtra or Punjab from outside. Only in Karnataka nowadays are they now passing not only moral judgments on people not knowing Kannada, but are also actively hostile to them. This, despite the migrants speaking in clear English. That's not Hindi imposition that you're complaining about.
Granted that southern states never wanted Hindi to be a link language. Can all their citizens speak fluent English at least? Can all Kannadigas speak in English? It's ridiculous to say that Hindi shouldn't be a link language while not educating your entire masses in English equally well.
When Bangalore wanted to be the IT capital of India, MNCs poured money into the city and paid heavy taxes in order to attract tech talent from across India. If the poor ultra-nationalistic kannadigas, who now feel that such tech opportunities should only belong to Kannada speakers, feel this strongly against the outsiders, can the state of Karnataka finally pass a law that bans every non-Kannada-speaking employee from working in Karnataka? I would actually welcome such a law wholeheartedly. Please do it!
I really want to see the face of this soft fascism exposed. I really want to see, once all the MNC offices and high-earning migrant employees start moving to other metro cities, how you will talk about the tax distribution... the taxes that you so much brag about that your state claims to be paying to the centre and not getting back enough in return.
Please do it. End this hypocrisy. On one hand, wanting a share of our hard earned money. On the other hand, slyly occasionally attacking the immigrant talent. Just not frequently enough to drive the entire productive and working population away. But frequently enough to harass some innocent folks occasionally.
There is no Hindi imposition. There is only cowardly soft fascism from kannadigas. They don't have the courage to lose their cash cows. They know that tech and finance industries aren't hostage to any one particular location. Those industries can be moved to other places in a short amount of time. Madam, show your talent by learning kannada. Migrants have to do that all over the world when they migrate, you are just another migrant. If you get job in Germany you cannot enter before learning German. As a migrant it's the least you could do to earn faith of natives.
Either fix your bimaru region or be a good migrant and learn language before entering the southern states. Else India will suffer like East and West Pakistan.

Not really. The ground reality is different. I've come across people who've stuck to Hindi despite multiple requests to make the communication in English.
There are people who will talk to you in Hindi right off the bat without even considering whether you know the language or not. And the funny part is, the educated IT crowd also does this.
Doesn't matter whether a person comes does it intensionally or not, in the end it's going to come off as insensitive.
I'd hate to stereotype, but North Indians are culturally insensitive. There are many Tamil & Telugu speakers in Bangalore & Karnataka as a whole. They've all been here even since the IT boom & after Kannada the most spoken languages are Tamil & Telugu. Yet, you will not hear any complaints about Tamil imposition or Telugu imposition or Malayalam imposition. Because these people integrate well & learn the local language within a couple of years.
Also, when you say those IT companies will moved, you're just fear mongering.
But don't take my word for it, just follow the news regularly and you'll see there are more companies that moved to Bangalore from places like Delhi & Noida, than there are companies that moved out of Bangalore.
Even Hyderabad will take atleast 10yrs if they manage to do some miracles to get near Bangalore's levels of today.

It's not just for jobs... Here is a situation.. my mother is a retired school head master.. but in bank she has to choose between only Hindi and English.. we are living in our own state.. but can't handle banking operations in kannada.. just because bank'snow don't give kannada option.. it's just a day to day work.. and a very important one.. just one example.. she understands both hindi and English but she and many like her will be more confident in her mother tongue

There’s no need for a 'national' or 'state' language. In Maharashtra, Marathi has many regional flavors like Varhadi and Konkani. Even in up, Hindi has different dialects. As a Maharashtrian, I sometimes struggle with Konkani, so imposing one language just doesn’t work.
Speaking Hindi is useful for business it connects you to a large part of India. But Hindi speakers need to learn regional languages when they move around. In Pune and Mumbai, Ive met very few Hindi speakers who don’t know some Marathi.. just give them some time and be humble.
This issue is getting politicized by savvy politicians who play to a gullible voter base. No major language is going away even Sanskrit is still taught in schools. So relax..

I agree that name boards for place, institutions, public transport etc must have Kannada and English. I support it completely. But why ask migrants to learn Kannada? It wouldn't work for obvious reasons.

All the comments here blame one Govt or the other or the politicians that they are imposing Hindi in Karnataka/Bangalore. Govts have nothing to do with the state in Bangalore where about a quarter of the population only can speak Kannada. The first root cause is the nature of a vast majority of the Kannada people. Most Kannadigas in Bangalore speak 5 languages to a very passable level - not only Hindi. So the outsiders did not realise/feel the need for learning Kannada. What happened is the tendency of the outsiders not having to learn Kannada reached such a great level, the Kannadigas started feeling the irritation. Many times I have heard migrated people saying "Kannada gothilla. Chaahiye toh Hindi may baath karo". In my own land, when I go to a shop/hotel/theatre/mall, the vendors ask me to speak in Hindi!!! That has touched raw nerve. A Kannadiga shop keeper is very willing to speak with a customer in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu or English. But when I am a customer having to speak in another language t a trade that irritates. Not that the Govts have suddenly imposed Hindi in public life.
I think it will create serious security problem for hindi people too, who are working in south India.

Same way english has been impossed on us. Its not even our local language, most of the time student memories the concept instead of understanding bcz of English imposition. We are not allowed to give interview in hindi, if we speak then they look down on us. Majority of india 🇮🇳 speaks, understand hindi despite of their local language so "Hindi " is a uniting language . Why most of famous and popular youtubers are making videos in hindi ? We north indians 🇮🇳 don't fight with each other for language, we also have our own state language and we respect each others reigional language and speak in hindi to understand each other while a person from tamil nadu can't talk with person from Kerala or karnataka (except if they speak in English) . U expect people who goes to south india to speak ur language from day 1 ? If u force them they will not learn but naturally they will addopt to local language. I don't go on speaking with any of three i know and expect them to speak with me in that language. I may start the conversation in any one language but i try to understand what they are saying in thier language and learn their language to survive.
I've seen many people from north india come here and start talking in hindi and expect us to talk in hindi they don't even try to learn the local language. If everyone starts talking in hindi to accommodate them, then the local language will die
Bruh upsc let's you take exams in Hindi and the interviews in hindi. If you are gonna apply for a position in an MNC they would want you to learn English because your clients ain't from the Hindi belt.

When you impose the later, you block access to the interstate residence, for jobs and other reasons. If this is the case, why don't all states have the right to put their language first? I don't believe a language could unite a country, it's about convenience. You are free to speak any language at your bay but the official language needs to be 1 or 2. A language which is familiar to most people which is Hindi and English. As you mentioned some words are difficult and most people struggle to pronounce them, but that's not an argument to not consider it as an official language.

nice coverage this was a common man's issue, but i think the vision was based on political movemet, if scripting this on behalf of common man i think this would be even more impactful. The story lacks vision from common man, like the cases that were shown in the into, that view. Because common people suffer so video should be based on common people's perspective instead of addressing political views. We've never needed a so called "connecting language" to begin with. Let me give you the example of Bangalore, there are many Tamil & Telugu speakers here, after Kannada which is the highest percentage of speakers. All these people learn each other's language to communicate. The Tamil & Telugu & Malayalam speakers in Bangalore do not have a problem in learning Kannada to communicate with the locals, so why do only Hindi speakers have this problem?
And why is the burden on South India to learn Hindi to communicate with the North? Let the North learn any one South Indian language atleast first. Or just make everyone learn English. Hindi is useless anyway, except for watching Bollywood movies.

The problem of making English the common language for the country as opposed to Hindi is that it disadvantages millions of lower middle class people who form the majority of the population. Currently, the upper class and upper middle class have a big advantage over everyone else because of their access to English education thus giving them access to top jobs or white collar jobs. Like one commenter said - let's make Japanese or Chinese the official language so no one has an advantage and it's a level playing field for everyone.
True. Another sad aspect is that in many of the South states that oppose Hindi imposition, they nudge visitors into speaking English instead. A receptionist in a cheap hotel may argue with if you speak Hindi but will get in line if you speak English. This poor chap knows neither of the 2 languages but is forced into making the discrimination.
