Explained: What’s ANI vs Wikipedia legal battle all about?

- ANI has lodged a lawsuit of Rs 2 crore against US-based non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, which runs Wikipedia, for “allowing misleading, negative, and defamatory” edits on their Wikipedia page.
The second paragraph of Wikipedia’s page on ANI says that it has been “accused of having served as a propaganda tool for the incumbent central government, distributing materials from a vast network of fake news websites, and misreporting events on multiple occasions”. The news agency, meanwhile, has alleged that the edit has been done with the “malicious intent of tarnishing” its reputation.
In a hearing of the case early this month, Justice Navin Chawla of the Delhi High Court asked the foundation to disclose information about the editors who made the edit and also remarked that if Wikipedia doesn’t like India, they should not work here.
But does Wikipedia have control over who writes and edits on its pages? Can absolutely anyone write anything? How does it work? Why did Justice Chawla make such a strong statement? Is it likely that Wikipedia will be banned in India? What is happening in the case?

The fact that this wasn't thrown out of court immediately shows how pathetic our justice system is. Judges need to interpret the law and give their opinions on the law, and shut up about their own opinions on the case. In a normal country, any judge like this would be tossed out of the judicial system
Hutiye, Interpretation of law itself means judges apply their opinion into their interpretation. Judiciary is subjective not objective. Its interpretation means it depends upon who the subject is. Objective is subjective independent and each will arrive at the same conclusion.

In this particular case, prolonging the case by any means will actually hurt ANI and thats why i am subscribing to a yearly membership of popcorn suppliers (if such a thing exists). Will be fun to see how this unfolds in the end.
Absolutely true ! Like I never was going to see what Wikipedia has to say about ANI and now ANI themselves have let the world know what Wikipedia says about ANI.
ANI is just Godi media. No secret about that. Right to unfiltered information cannot be taken away with a ban. There are so many many students and teachers who rely on Wikipedia in India. Plus the truth about ANI is not there on Wikipedia, there are so many other social media platforms that tell you the ugly truth of ANI. Hope the judge uses common sense

Judges should incorporate more common sense and knowledge of the world while giving judgement/statement. Wikipedia itself has no control of its articles + it's the truth. The Judge does seem biased (may be a devotee, or is pressurised by the government, we have all seen the CJI)

Every platform that gives the truth will be sued
As a Wikipedia editor and rollbacker, I have had a thousand edits rolled back and that's totally normal because you will not get away with making edits with bad intent for long. The beauty of Wikipedia lies in making it open to everyone and giving everyone the power to edit as long as they have the basic idea of how research works and how reliable secondary sources can be collected.

Okay, I know it might sound a bit discriminatory, but I think the sign language is a distraction. I think subtitles should be the go to, good subtitles in multiple languages would benefit everyone even the differently abled.
