    Awesome video buddy, thanks for letting us be part of seeing your fun i mean your hard work. When it stops being fun that's when you do something else. Because if you don't enjoy what you are doing, you will hate getting up each day and going to work and that's a boring sad life. Only you can change it if its not something you love to do. I'd love doing that myself, except for getting that cold rain slapping up side the face an head during those really cold days for hours and hours. I love being out on boats. If I lived up there I'd want to hitch a ride to go out for a few days. 👍

    300 fathoms! 548 meters that’s impressive when you think about it.
    I’ve always talk to fishermen about details of different types of fishing, and they often are hesitant to talk about it. I know that I’m very interested in all the details and I bet there are many others who are interested.
    I enjoy your videos because you explain what’s happening with enough detail to have a decent idea about the operation.
    One big observation is the amount of investment in a commercial operation. It’s overwhelming when considering the $$$$ cost of that setup, before you even start fishing. I will never complain about the cost of a premium piece of fish that I pickup at my local retailer.
    I always try to buy Canadian fish, because it’s a superior product is every way.

      @@peterparsons7141 yeah and often we are fishing up to 700 fathoms, super deep it’s crazy. And I really appreciate you saying that Peter, it’s something we get a lot of is people complaining about fish prices and it hurts when we put everything we have into it.

    Hey skipper Al I was a crew member on the Ocean Pearl for many trips and you are wrong about a few things, black cod and dogfish were definitely something that we were after but we also rigged the boat up for squid, drift nets , ans a shelter deck for processing the squid , but yea she is a fine boat and had the best crew on the coast

    • @Skipper_al

    • @moegraham6904
      @moegraham6904 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No offense but i dont think you did mention the squid fiasco, and i do believe that we geared up for dogfish before the squid , it was a big deal back then because, it involved the cooperation of 2 governments and the logistics of involving 3 boats ( ocean pearl,La Porche ,and the shima maru) we certainty did catch lots of squid but the bycatch was horrifying and ultimately Blair decided it was the wrong type of boat for that fishery, and we went back to doing what we did best , black cod.

Also we mostly used 2 men to stack traps, but with smaller strings, i can see its easy enough for one guy , provided that the height of the stack is not too high, it would be cool to demonstrate to your viewers how 2 men in a big swell, the gravity defying trick, of timing the toss to chuck the traps over 20 high. • @Skipper_al
      @Skipper_al  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes so on this trip we had 10 of our normal crew on the boat and 2 scientists. Throughout the 46 days we went in every two weeks to change the science staff out because they don’t want to do a 40+ day stint. So we ended up having 3 different pairs of scientist on the boat. On a normal trip there is 13 crew as the boat fishes 24 hours a day. So shift work and always 8 crew on deck at any given time. Thanks for watching! I’m coming to Hawaii in March!

    Do you guys get much bycatch fishing like this? And do the scientists keep track of it? I think saw one little rockfish of some sort at the beginning there.

    • @Skipper_al
      @Skipper_al  ปีที่แล้ว

      Our bycatch trap fishing is very minimal. In one load which is 300,000 pounds of blackcod we get plus or minus 6 thousand pounds of rockfish. Anything with a low survival rate must be kept. And absolutely EVERYTHING is accounted for. We are monitored by camera systems that record 100% of the hauls and when the boat gets in it is reviewed by authorities and if they find any discrepancy between the logbooks and the camera we would get audited and fined. It’s a great system and keeps all fisherman accountable!

    • @benosick8542
      @benosick8542 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Skipper_al That's interesting to know you guys have cameras. If you guys were in Alaska a boat this size that does its own processing would probably have to have an observer on board at all times.

    • @Skipper_al
      @Skipper_al  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the trawl fleet has observers that go out on the boat… the problem with that is they can be paid off… not sure if the same thing happens in Alaska but there has been some instances here.

    Great to see the commercial fishing side of black cod ! Not sure if enjoy being out in that weather though. What do you do with bycatch ?

    • @Skipper_al
      @Skipper_al  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Stijin! We are really good at targeting blackcod so we have one of the smallest bycatch compared to any commercial fishery. For species that do not have a good chance of survival we are required to keep specifically rockfish, nothing goes to waste and it all goes to market. That being said, when we do a load on the pearl, we get roughly 300,000# of blackcod and roughly 3-6,000# of rockfish… so a very small portion of our load is bycatch. Any other species that can be returned to the water and survive will be but every single fish is accounted for by us and then later audited by the camera system that constantly records us while we fish. This keeps the fisherman accountable and an discrepancies in the counts versus the camera system can lead to heavy fines. Thanks for watching dude! I hope all is well!
