Thank you! This video was from years ago but helped me today! I am a beginner starting out with this camera and nothing I have found on the internet helped me as much as this video did.

I've had my Nikon D 40 since Nikon started making them probably 10 or 12 years ago and I still have it and it works great. But these videos help because I tend to forget the settings exactly.

Hi. The red rectangle pops up to show you where your focus area is but shouldn’t affect your ability to shoot. It may be that you don’t have enough light. Make sure your light meter is centered. Hope this helps! Good luck.
ive had my Nikon D40 for about a year now. im not sure if I can use the menu screen as a view finder or just for menus and viewing of pictures. please can you fill me in. thank you .
The Fn button can be set up to do a number of functions. You can set it to a different function in your menu. The ISO can also be changed in the same menu in which you change the exposure compensation. I wish I could give you more detailed information but I no longer have access to these cameras as I stopped teaching at the school that used them in order to stay at home with my newborn. Good luck!
If your shutter speed is below 1/60, your photos will appear blurry. That may be the reason. Try shooting in a brighter setting or choosing a wider aperture so that you can have a faster shutter speed. Good luck!
I am supposed to have the same camera but nothing matches. No mention here of how you actually get to see the subject you want to photograph. The button that allows the "live view" does nor exist.
quick question. the lowest my aperture goes is 5.6 and i want to take pictures at a concert where they only have a little bit of light. what should i do? get a new lens to where it can go to f 1.4. What mode should i be on and what else would help?
+Ian Connor There are a couple things you could do. You could shoot using a different lens that would allow you to open up more. You still might not get enough light though. You could also use exposure compensation to lighten up the exposure. If you shoot in RAW, you can also correct the exposure in post, as long as it's not too far gone.
+Ian Connor You could get a different lens with a wider aperture, but that would create a very low depth of field and still might not get you enough light to work with. You could try working with a flash or experiment with exposure compensation. Good luck!
For anyone else reading this question - my answer would be to ramp up the ISO - noise in an indoor gig is acceptable anyway - wayyyyy cheaper than trying to get a 1.4
Lens cap? Mostly kidding there. Check to make sure you don't have exposure compensation set to anything other than zero and always make sure your light meter is centered before you shoot. Good luck!
I've been using this camera for a few years and learned more in this 4 minutes than I have from reading the manuals. GREAT Video.
Thanks! I'm glad you found it helpful!
Like George, I’ve learned so much . I have a d40x so I guess the screen layouts are different to the d40? Thanks x

How to switch between menu items and the viewfinder on this camera please
How do I set the function button to change the iso ?
If you are using your own camera, will the side Fn button still be set up to change the ISO?
No. You can set it to do that in the menu though. 😊
Some more Nikon d40 videos please...
Video function available or not in D40
Thank you Artsy Dork
Thanks for information.
But i don't have a camera
Good instruction.
Thanks!
Does this camera take videos
I’m not sure but something when I take photos, it doesn’t want to take it. This red Rectangle shape pops up.
Hi. The red rectangle pops up to show you where your focus area is but shouldn’t affect your ability to shoot. It may be that you don’t have enough light. Make sure your light meter is centered. Hope this helps! Good luck.
What 200 lenses did you use?
thanks for sharing!
Can you not see what you are taking a picture of on the screen before taking it or can only see via the view finder?
Just the viewfinder. No preview on the screen, I’m afraid.
@@ArtsyDork was just given this camera and wasn't sure. Still alot of fun and good to learn on

E B thank you so much I've gone crazy trying to figure it out. if I could. but now that you've confirmed it. ill stop trying. thank you.
The Fn button is triggering a self timer. Unable to change the ISO. Any pointers?
The Fn button can be set up to do a number of functions. You can set it to a different function in your menu. Ok, thanks
If you want to use your camera. turn it on, then adjust your fstop go 4 and touch the n09fgo arrow..... this isn't beginners
How to set aprocher...
Very difficult to understand
Not helpful sorry. Holding down Fn does not allow ISO change. Nothing helpful explaining shutter speed.
Do you have to use the viewfinder or can you use the display screen to shoot your pictures?
