  • When I got this cabinet, almost everything wanted to fall apart. In this video you will see, how I fix this Art Noveau cabinet.
This piece was made around 1910-1930 period, in Estonia. It doesn´t have fancy details. Only the glass section hints, that this was made in Art Noveau period. Originally they had only clear coat, but my client wanted darker version, so I had to stain it. Some versions of this cabinet had Art Noveau style carvings on the doors.

Outstanding learning video for me... 24 minutes of me shaking my head wondering why I never thought of some of the things you think to do to save these furniture pieces. The new handle idea would NEVER have occurred to me and even if it had, I would not have started with a nail for sure!!! Keeping true to the methods of jointing in the days of old is another place your skills excel.
Looking for ward to the next video. I have retired and moved to the Philippines and here we have a plague of issues with tiny beetles that eat wood as the European worms do. Looks about the same, but they are everywhere and eat almost every species of wood. I fight them here on my mahogany desk top by splitting tiny spears of bamboo driving them into the holes, normally 5 to 8 mm deep and trimming them flush, and covering the white wood with a stain or dye. They die from lack of air and stop. The only way I have found that works for these beetles. Well under 1mm in diameter, but if left, they will drill dozens or even hundreds of holes. Kill them in place without chemicals is my idea...

Hard (impossible?) to tell new wood from old. And that broken handle repair - including the brass plating - was amazing. I assume the insects were long gone before you got the cabinet. Or did you have it fumigated? I’m doing some work on termite damaged exterior cladding and all I can do is cut off and replace any ground contact pieces and soak the rest in multiple coats of an insecticide treatment - and hope for the best. Thanks for the video.

@Robert Bamford try using “Bifenthrin” it’s strong enough to do the job on the termites, and mild enough to use on dogs, cows, horses, etc

Looks better than any new cabinets, it feels good that you always respect the exact time of the furnitures and your empathy when ever they are built. 🙏 For teaching us!

Even before you restored this piece, Id taken it over anything built today. Thank you for sharing your work and thank you for restoring history.

Who would have thought that an old nail could become the drawer handle, is that thinking outside the box or outside of the drawer. Whatever it is you are so talented and thank you for sharing it with us.

The use of the florescent light to shadow defects was very impressive. (could be why they use it for make-up lights...I'm just saying...lol). The repair, the skill, and the end product were amazing.

Yay a new video! Thanks :) I loved the dramatic zoom in's at the beginning 😂 It turned out just gorgeous! I'm so glad you have such a respect for this wonderful old furniture and show us how it was built and your skillful means to repair them.

More of your very fine work! You are a master class in sharp chisels and accurate saw cuts. And you usually have the advantage of working on pieces that were properly made in the first place. Thank you for another great video.

Awesome work. I'm restoring a antique Hoosier cabinet for my wife. After seeing what you accomplished with such broken cabinets I have hope I can fix mine.

All that worm damage...holy smokes! And can we all just marvel at the brilliance in creating the new drawer pull? Melting brass bristles onto iron...genius!!
