Peach is based on a Japanese goddess of abundance symbolized by peaches, Izanami, mother of Amaterasu. It stands to reason Peach will imbue magical power to wherever she is simply by being there, and that's clearly Bowsers main goal to harness. That's also why he isn't "doing" anything to her but just keeps her captive: because every second having her in his possession is a win already. This doesn't rule out him also wanting to solidify his control out of pure ego and greed, but as royalty with responsibilites this weighs out much more out of favor for Peach. All those BROWN mushroom people would probably have a point to make about the quality of her rulership.
That is, if "princess" even takes any of that kind of responsiblity. Her concern for losing her freedom is clearly genuine and I wouldn't chalk her up as selfish to be free, since it doesn't look like she goes out much even WITH her freedom, but I think she just has decided that Toads deserve a high quality of life in her court just for being "nice".
And that might be better than alternative. Shell-based magic used in Yoshi egg shells and Koopa shells seems to have more utility, and Bowser isn't shy to go as far as manipulate the denizens of Dinosaur Island with magic to hold control of them. What is a Koopa if not a bigger Toady, those red-robed flying Koopas, and what is a red-robed Toady if not a product of genetic enhancement that could go awfully wrong, producing a... Shy Guy...
Even Birdos and Spikes, regurgitating endless magical weapons out of their disfigured bodies, eerily similar to Boom Booms or Koopalings and Yoshis, at least dare to show their faces in public. Next to that, maybe being born a mindless stem-cell 1Up and growing your way into a Toad, to a Toadette, to a Peachette through the power freely flowing out of Peach is simply a better fate, even if it is somewhat exclusive to conformists.
I think Mario and peach have a secret crush on each other but I think that they're scared that they might hurt each other's feelings
I like how Mario and Peach's team name is "Cutest Couple," but _Luigi and Daisy_ are "Steady Sweeties" implying they've been dating for a while and get along very well.

I think that Peach is just shy and delicate, she obviously holds Mario close to her heart, but it looks like she'd rather have Mario confess to her than she to him. Knowing Nintendo they're gonna keep their relationship the way it is as long as possible... I agree that scene in Odyssey was confusing I was scratching my head too, but later I understood her behaviour: she clearly doesn't like being forced, and Bowser who kidnaps her and forces to marry! And suddenly Mario started to be just as pushy at that moment - very disappointing. It could have been a nice moment if Bowser didn't step in, Mario was calm before. If Mario tries to "tell something important" to Peach again he better make sure that noone is gonna interrupt.

Mario, even with his interesting new (and old) abilities, definitely was out of character in SMO. Did he hate (or at least have a problem with even if they, at the end of the day, may be friendly rivals) Bowser for forcing Princess Peach to marry her instead of let her decide if she wants to consent? @@isolated_illustrations I think that is what she thinks. As someone who didn’t always defend herself, Mario isn’t the one that should confess his love to her. Maybe SHE should because if Mario only sees her as a friend, it’s not the end of the world for anyone.
Peach does love Mario. She rejected him in Odyssey because she just had to deal with almost getting married to someone she detested, and just wanted a break. The fact that he and Bowser were fighting over her like a prize didn't help matters.
I would say it's acting a bit out of character for Mario for wanting Peach to make a decision like that. I don't what the writers were going for with that.

I didn’t even know their was a rift before now because the ending was cute, funny, and wholesome.
Whether Peach loves Mario platonically or romanticly is completely irrelevant since most anyone would refuse marriage on the spot like that.
If she’s going to accept (or even politically decline) Mario’s hand-in-marriage, he needs to first propose appropriately. And by “appropriately,” I mean not forcing the poor stressed-out girl who just went under quite the ordeal to choose between him and her kidnapper. It wasn’t fair of Mario to put that kind of pressure on her in that moment.
If anyone is going to be upset, it should be at how uncharacteristically Mario acted in the moment ; however, I’ll give Mario benefit-of-the-doubt and say he thought he was being romantic and just greatly miscalculated how the gesture would actually come off. Personally, I think Mario’s disappointment at the end is less a “dejection from rejection” and more of a “What?! Wait… oh, I see where I may have majorly slipped up there... Whoopsie. I’ma have to apologize biga time for this.”

That's what I say too. Like you see Mario and Peach almost consider confessing. Then when the monster intervenes, Mario makes a bad mistake and starts to get pushy too. In a way, it felt out of character for him.

A counter-argument to "If you love someone, you wouldn't kiss their brother": Peach kisses her rescuer on the cheek, not on the mouth. In some countries, kissing someone on the cheek really isn't a big deal. It means you like them, sure, but it doesn't necessarily mean you love them THAT way. People can kiss their friends and family on the cheek.

I’m pretty sure Peach does love Mario. It’s just that Nintendo is trying to keep it subtle. Like what SEGA does with Sonic and Amy. I think because the target demographic is kids and mainly ones where if there is any instance of love or romance they would react like “Ewwww!” “Gross!” “That’s disgusting!”, they don’t focus heavily on that with Mario and Peach. Which is likely why Peach kisses Mario on the cheek or nose and not on the lips. Or better yet have both of them kiss/make out.

I think Peach is an ISFP, a shy sweet personality that doesn’t always know how to speak up for themselves or express themselves with words. They express themselves through action. Peach loves to bake and always loves the act or making something special for Mario, a very ISFP way of saying I love you. She’s also only physically affectionate towards Mario giving him hugs and kisses. He has her special attention. Actions speak volumes to an ISFP and Mario rescuing her certainly seems to have captured her heart. 🥺💛

I don’t think it has to do with her “personality type” because those pseudoscience classifications are about as bogus and arbitrary as horoscopes. That aside, however, I totally agree. Whether or not Peach is romanticly interested in Mario, she clearly cares deeply for him which can be seen through her affectionate actions.
They're interested in each other, but Peach is too passive to make a move and Mario is afraid Peach isn't interested.
I take her rejection at the end of Odyssey to be situational. It was just the absolute wrong time to propose.
And notably, she's still good friends with Mario long after that cutscene.
I always interpreted the end of Odyssey as her being fed up with Mario and Bowser throwing themselves at her and fighting over her. It was more of a character moment for her where she was done being the “thing” they fight over.

I like to picture them as definitely having mutual feelings for each other, but their personalities made it so they never really came out with it.
Peach has been shown to be a bit shy at times, it’s very possible that she just isn’t sure how to address her feelings and as such waits for Mario to make the first move.
Mario meanwhile, is in a similar boat, though in his case, because he knows how she is, perhaps he’s just being a gentleman and not wanting to put her on the spot, barring the time in odyssey where he was probably stressed and acting irrationally.
At the same time status also plays a part I’d say. She’s a whole princess, so the way she interacts and puts herself out there is limited due to that. She has to uphold her status
I think Peach is a romantic at heart and the reason she's never afraid or scared of being kidnapped is that she knows Mario will come to save her in the end and indeed does love and care about him. However, she does have her limits and won't stand Mario and Bowser fighting over her like a piece of meat or a doll and that's what made her snap in Odyssey (Well, that and being forcibly dragged all across the planet and then married against her free will)

Peach indeed does love Mario. Though needless to be a romantic relationship, we know she loves him as her closest and most dependable friend. The word love doesn't always connect to romance, it's a word of showing a great level of affection to another person, your family, your best friend. Nintendo likes to throw in a nod or two of Peach or Mario hinting at romantic feelings but don't dive into them for long so it keeps the game going and us guessing. So all in all, we all know she loves him, it just doesn't have to be a romantic kind of love.
This has calmed me down a bit - then again, how can we be sure...

I like to think that Peach does love Mario but she is to shy to tell him in Luigi's mansion when you find Toad he tells Luigi that he was sent by Peach to find Mario and Toad says she will flip out if Mario is not found. And in Super Princess Peach for the DS after Peach defeats Bowser and rescues the Mario Brothers and Toad she runs straight towards Mario pushing Luigi aside. I think there is a official GIF of Mario and Peach looking at a sunset zooming out in the shape of a heart that came around 2013.

I feel it's likely but back and forth cause Nintendo doesn't really want to commit to an actual relationship between the 2 for 1 reason or another. If I had to choose 1 though I'd say yes. I'd chock the Oddyssey ending up to her being extremely overwhelmed by 2 people shoving flowers into her face on the moon after an extremely dangerous situation. That or she just isn't ready for marriage. I feel like Mario and Peach do have something special but the down to earth stuff is mostly not shown while what is shown is the action oriented part of their relationship (Peach getting kidnapped and Mario rescuing her).

You completely missed some dialogue from peach in the game "Mario and Luigi Paper Jam". After meeting up with paper peach, I think Mario ( NOT PAPER MARIO ) and Paper Peach had some connection to one another, and when Peach realized Mario had all his focus on Paper Peach, from what she said, she seemed almost jealous. I think she said something like "You never give me this much attention Mario" or some like that.
I think Peach just isn't ready for love yet. She has a kindgom to run, and I think that's more important to her than almost anything. You can't really blame her in odessy either. When two guys come up to you and start shoving flowers in your face, it is pretty overwhelming, and Peach just wanted to go home and take a break from all the chaos. She's fine with people expressing her love for her, but she's just very shy. She probably doesn't know her exact relationship with Mario, but she still likes him. I think she's more focused on being independent and running a kingdom for right now. Being a princess who has to take care of over thousands of toads can be pretty stressful if you think about it. But she definitely does care about Mario.
The difference between Mario and Bowser is that Mario is genuinely in love with Peach whereas Bowser is just a SIMP in love with the idea of being with her.
Honestly I don’t blame Peach for choosing neither of them in Odyssey, she’s just escaped being kidnapped, not the time or place Mario. I do think she has feelings for him, but he was putting her on the spot in a way no one would like.
The problem is Mario has never been shown "pushy" towards Peach ever aside from that five minute cutscene. They're always heavily implied to be romantic partners. If Nintendo wanted to make the games less sexist they could just just drop the Princess rescue stuff entirely and make Peach a player character, etc.
In a meta way, I believe Miyamoto don't want introduce romance in Mario and Peach relationship, cause some fans could want more story about that and Miyamoto really doesn't like making deep about that.

The "controversial" ending of odyessy isn't a rejection of peach not feeling the same way rather then it just wasn't the right moment. I think peach doesn't care about "getting the most romantic setting" marry on the moon. But just the two of them and in a more simple one where she isn't kidnap or anyone else in the way. And the "peach leaving mario behind" is some is a bad reason. Mario is known for his jumping, even in the cut scene was shown to make the jump without any assistance from bowser.

I believe in the "Mario characters are actors" theory. There own creator even said as much. You can't really tell for sure who loves whom, because they're just playing the part for the entertainment of the Mushroom Kingdom and neighboring lands. Mario and Bowser are actually friends. Super Mario Bros 3 is officially confirmed to be a stage play. In Super Mario 64 you actually see the camera man.

I like the fanfiction video ProzD reads somewhere on TH-cam of how Peach basically reveals she made all the race tracks and tennis courts and stuff in Mario Party to spend time with Mario and to impress him. if the mario movie is cannon, that's a no brainer, she literally gets stunned when mario meets her, and in the scenes after, they get so close that even donkey kong got the message, and mario in the movie is literally a door, HE LITERALLY DIDN'T REALIZED WHAT WAS GOING ON, he needed DONKEY KONG to mock him so he could think about it
I came across this video recently, and in the super princess peach manga it shows that she really loves Mario. The whole time she kept thinking about him, and had heart eyes for him. She even thought about dancing with him as well.

In fact the question is not if Mario and Peach love each other but when Nintendo on the Western side will make this couple official.
Because yes, there is no doubt that Mario and Peach are in love, and whether people like it or not, there are several games already that have demonstrated a romance between these two and hundreds of clues here and there- there (not to mention the film which also demonstrates a more thoughtful romance).
Moreover, for those who don't know, Nintendo on the Japanese side have made it public several times that Mario and Peach are an official couple.
But anyway, frankly it would be a good idea if you made a video on all the scenes in the film between these two, without forgetting the deleted scenes and the clues hidden almost everywhere in the film.

I haven't played Odyssey yet, but as a girl, just seeing Mario and Bowser competing over Peach, saying "me me me pick me" and pressuring her like a bunch of desperate suitors, is a huge turn-off. Even if Peach really does like Mario, she would probably be disappointed and weirded out to see him like that, because she's always known him to be a hero, mature and polite. But now, he's acting just like Bowser. Oh, so I escaped being forced to marry one guy just to have the guy who saved me pressure me into marrying him instead? How are these two different, then?
If instead Mario gets selflessly indignant for Peach's sake, beats Bowser up then tells him off for his nerve, Peach would definitely give him a kiss. And THEN he might be able to whip out his bouquet and go for a proposal without being rude. Girls dig that kind of heroism XD.
I dunno if I were Peach I'd be pretty fed up too. I don't see the ending of Odyssey as Peach not liking Mario... I think its more that she was being pressured, didn't like it, and likely just wasn't ready to tie the knot yet. After all, Bowser just kidnapped her and tried to force her to marry him, I don't think she'd be too eager to immediately marry Mario right after.

My believe is that Peach does indeed love Mario, however she puts her responsibility as a princess first. So while she clearly likes Mario and he likes her back, she is still keeping it platonically.
While with the Odyssey scene I think it was because Mario, same as Bowser, has been pressuring her to make a choice right now when she clearly is not ready for the commitment. Which only made her rightfully angry.
After you beat Odyssey you can travel back to the Mushroom kingdom (and collect bonus stars to travel to other bonus worlds, or back to old ones) Peach isn't in her castle there, she went on vacation to get some alone time.
I think it was just bad timing on Mario's part, like when you hit on a girl you like, that just got out of a relationship. Let her sort out her emotions, before expecting her to take on new ones. Mario was being a bit selfish.
Peach had just been rescued by Mario and kind of owed him, it was a bad time to profess his love, she felt pressured to say yes. Mario is a great guy, but does he understand Peach? Not as much as he thinks he does.

This is a simple story, these characters will bever evolve and thats okay: the idea of the developers has always been for them to be shipped with one another, but that is as far as it is going to go.

I honestly never understood why people were so upset about Peach’s decision in Odyssey. Like, imagine that you had two friends that you knew for years who suddenly tried to force you into a romantic relationship with one of them! Would anyone honestly be comfortable with that?! I’m pretty sure Peach already knew that these two liked her that way, but it was the way they did it that made her act the way she did!
Edits: There seem to be numerous people who seem to misunderstand my perspective, so allow me to clarify a few things.
I’m not saying Peach can’t have feelings for Mario. I think it could go either way. I’m just think she wasn’t ready for those feelings (at least in that scene), and both Mario and Bowser were being overbearing!
Yes, it is true that Bowser regularly kidnaps Peach and fights Mario, but, considering the fact that they play go kart and sports in between, the whole kidnapping thing seems to be just another way of hanging out. It’s like Eggman attacking Sonic and friends in Sonic Boom.
Secondly, I’m confused why some of you are arguing that Bowser shouldn’t be considered a marriage candidate, especially when I never thought that myself. My main point is that Peach views both Mario and Bowser in a platonic manner, and that neither one of them are bachelors in this scenario. I’m not saying she should and would pick Bowser over Mario! As far as I’m concerned, she isn’t currently interested in a romantic relationship with anyone!
Also, if you really want to bring up when Bowser turned Toads into bricks, remember who kept breaking those bricks later on.
If anyone brings up Nintendo High or the Illumination movie, I want to remind everyone that those are separate continuities from the games.
Also, someone did ask if the spin-offs should be considered canon, and that is completely fair! Miyamoto himself admitted that he was more focused on making good gameplay than having a congruent story. Therefore, I feel like it’s probably up to us to fill in the blanks. If you want to consider Bowser to be an actual threat to Mario and Peach, that’s valid!
To keep things “simple,” I’m going to look at the main stream games for reference (original Super Mario Bros, Super Mario World, Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, Mario Galaxy, Mario Odyssey). Most of the bad things Bowser has done is kidnapping and conquering. Although those are atrocious and dangerous crimes by real world standards, that’s just basic bad guy stuff in any form of fiction. Besides, normally the only “consequences” this leads is his minions running around causing light mischief! Nobody really dies to Bowser or his troops in the main line games! He puts that spell on the Toads in the instructional manual, but Samus is called a man in the Metroid manual, so we’ll need to take more than a few grains of salt from that info. I’d say the worst things he did was his galaxy escapade, which was more over-the-top than his usual schemes, the damage done to Hatty’s world, and stealing the Shines while framing Mario with Bowser Jr. However, these feel more like the exceptions than the rules.

It feels like there is one of the most annoying tropes in romantic writing at work here:
"I'm happy with things, the way they are now."
Peach got used to have Mario as her loyal knight. Never thinking of doing nothing about it, because having him by her side just feels right! Thus, she never thinks of making a move, or, maybe, even accepting if he makes a move himself. She doesn't want to risk changing what she has now.
So, I can only assume that Mario is a worst place than the FriendZone! Since, Peach must know how Mario feels (come on, its far beyond just saving her, at this point), and that "friend" doesn't truly describes him, but she's also not willing to commit to a relationship with him!
She's not committing to a relationship, but they're still having good time together.

I definitely think Peach loves Mario. Like what other people are saying she's probably waiting for Mario to say something as well as not liking being forced into marriage. But other than that I can say they are meant for each other

If Peach just saw Mario as a friend there would be no ellipsis. She would confidently say "This is my friend, Mario." but there must be something more to their relationship in order for her to say it in that way.

Also peach does love Mario, in paper jam bros at the beginning of the game Mario gets all lover over paper peach and peach gets defensive and insulted when Mario is showing unrest in paper peach, going so far as to grab him and drag him closer.
Also the kiss is a thing she does for saving her because they both kiss Luigi in that game, but are seen trash talking him later.

I think it’s always been implied. The same way Link is to Zelda. Or even Luigi to Daisy. Nintendo is such a pure brand that aside from maybe the sequel or three-quel of the film, they can explore. But for the games. I don’t fully think so. It’s one of those things that Nintendo knows we see Mario and Peach, or Link and Zelda as an item but don’t want to confirm anything. At least maybe not yet.
I think an important Detail during the odyssey scene is that Peach smiley gently and seems flustered when Bowser whips out the Bouquet. I dont think that that means that she likes Bowser. It's just that she is seemingly more open to feelings when she isnt forced (to marry, in this case). That's also why she rejects both Mario and Bowser. Not because she dislikes them but simply because she doesnt want to be forced to make a choice.
I think it’s pretty smart of Nintendo not making them the official couple. Fans love making theories and ship different characters. Nintendo knows it and that’s why they often let fans make their own conclusions. If you think that Peach is into Mario, then that opinion is just as right as the opposite one 🤷♀️
I LOVE them as a couple but some others ship Mario/Paper Mario with other characters (some with Cappy others with Huey others with another princess) I never found the appeal in the Mario/Huey ship despite me being an absolute Huey fan.....but to each their own... 😅

Well about the color splash example, I feel like that's more her slightly hinting at the idea of them being more than friends and not specifying it rather than a flat out friend zone. That's just what I got from it though.

In Paper Mario for the N64 she clearly expresses wanting to leave the guests and spend some alone time with Mario. She even says the stars are Roman. Than Bowser shows up, defeats Mario, and takes control of the castle lifting it into the sky.

Honestly, the ending of Odyssey is very weird to me. Sure, Mario was a bit pushy, but without him Peach would've been locked away for 30+ years. Also, she didn't have to STEAL Mario's ship and try to leave him stranded on the Moon with Bowser.
