My mom bought new foam replacements for her sofa cushions and I struggled with changing them so…I turned to TH-cam. Ran across this video and you saved the day. I followed your technique to the tee and they look wonderful. Thank you for sharing this information. Very helpful!
I'm sorry I missed your comment from the other day. I am so pleased the video was useful and you got great results of your own, it really boost your confidence when things turn out as they should. Good luck with future projects.
Great instructional video!!!! Love your accent, too. You sound just like my mother, born in Morpeth, Northumberland. Especially liked video because you stuck to the necessary elements of making the cushion and didn’t put in lots of extraneous dialog to fill air time like others often do. You really know your stuff! I can’t wait to get started on my project. ❤
Thank you for your comment. I'm originally from the Portsmouth area in Hampshire, although I left the UK in '96 for a little globe-trotting/living. I make a point of not boring people with my nonsense so cut most of it out as I edit the films. Good luck with your project.
Thank you so much for this video. An absolute eye opener. I have been stressing about redoing my sofa cushions, and the light bulb came on as I was watching your work.
Thank you for your comment. Having taught for a number of years, I try to think of the questions I would be asked when I put my videos together. Good luck with your project.
Absolutely brilliant! Thank you for explaining the cultural differences of top quality expectations. I work in Marine Canvas industry (USA, and am self taught) and have worked on sailboat interior cushions that were made in Sweden over 20 years ago, and the quality of interior work was impeccable-other local upholstery shops don't even meet that standard today! I did :) You do amazing work!!
Thank you for your comment. I was in for a huge culture shock when I first move from the UK to Houston. In the UK I had sometimes a 6-month waiting list for my work, here I had to change my approach as people want it now and many do not understand the quality so long as it looks the part. I remember one of my first projects in the UK was to remake some rather long, velvet curtains that were 80+ years old into shorter ones. The main fabric was still in good shape, slightly sun-bleached, and worn along the bottom hem. Here in the US, they would have been trashed after a number of years as they were not usable anymore. Always strive to do the best work even though it will not be seen by others.
Just found your channel today and thank goodness!! I haaaaate the spring cushions in our old couch! They are going every which direction and it’s so uncomfortable to sit on. So! I’ve been looking at what to do for a foam replacement cushion and your video is the BEST idea!! I’m new to this so the layers of thinner foam around a solid middle and the Dacron around the outside….yep! Going to take measurements and get this done! Thank you so much! From Virginia Beach, U.S.A.! 🥰
Thank you for your comment. I am glad this method of using foams will help fort out your uncomfortable couch, it is a shame to junk something that still has good bones which will last for many more years to come. From Houston, Texas.
Thank you for your feedback, I am so pleased that you found the video interesting and captivating too. I try to keep my videos short and to the point, although a few are rather long as there was so much information to put into them. It helps having taught people the subject to try to imagine them asking me questions, so I can give the answers as I work on these projects. Good luck with your future projects
Oh, I must say!! That was hugely helpful. Thank you very much. I am about to buy some new chairs and since I can't possibly afford the super duper ones, I have had to settle. However, I have every expectation that the seat cushions will not be very comfortable. So I am looking to deal with that immediately. You've given me so much confidence to do it myself. Thank you again. Mx
Thank you. I recently had to make some really high seat cushions for a friend as she had purchased a dining table and chairs. The seat cushions sunk so low when sat on she said it reminded her of being too little to reach the table. It does make a huge difference if you can make the required alterations when or as needed. Good luck with yur project.
Thank you. This is the way I was taught in college to wrap the foam and have learnt over the years to get things right the first time as it saves time in the long run. I wish you luck with your projects.
Thank you for your comment. I taught this subject so I try to think of the questions people asked and make sure that I have covered most of them in my videos. Good luck with your project.
I’ve watched a lot of vids to try and get a good grasp of how to proceed. Yours is one of the very best! Your work is so professional and you are a great teacher. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Liked, shared and Subscribed. ❤
Thank you for your feedback. I have been teaching these subjects for a very long time and have learnt so much on my journey. I try to imagine all the questions that would be raised for each project and give reasons, show how or talk about alternative ways for doing things. I also realize when editing the things I miss out, so try to remember for the next project. Good luck with your projects, it is so much cheaper when you can do them yourself.
Thank you for posting this video. I learned so much. Your knowledge and expertise in this area certainly show, I look forward to watching more of your videos!
@@beinspired1487 It surely shows that you enjoy what you do! Even though you are retired, local craft schools could surely use your expertise. If know if you had classes here I would surely take them!
@@nataliew9174 Thank you. I have tried to make the videos along the lines of classes so that I have as much information on them with explanations too, then you can start and stop them when you need to. My daughter has suggested I should go back to school/college and teach even if it is only sewing. Like most retired people I have so much to do and not enough hours in the day to do it in.
@@jennlynn5761, I have managed to put a few useful videos together over the past few years. I would much rather share my knowledge for free, so people can either save money or learn a new hobby.
Thank you for your comment. Living in the States does have its drawbacks for taking on some people's projects. Maybe I could work my way around the world one-day helping people with interior decorating items. I am like you and am busy with various personal works that pay the bills and then helping friends with their decorating problems too. I try to set a Sunday just to renovate my house otherwise it will never get finished and sold. I wish you luck on finding the time and these can be done one at a time not all in one go to get the project finished.
Hi! This material looks exactly like both of my couches. My husband wants to get new couches, but they’re still in good shape. Your work looks flawless. Have a great day 😉
Thank you for your feedback. Not that you asked my opinion on your couches, I will suggest keeping them a bit longer until you really fall in love with something better, move to somewhere you need to change them for something bigger or smaller, or they start falling apart.
So much better than the way I’ve been doing it. I’m going to give it a go. Thank you for taking the time to share. I’m certain the video took longer to make than the cushions.
Thank you for your feedback. The projects do take quite some time to film, but the magic of editing does take all the "Uhmm's and ahh's" as well as the silent moment out giving the illusion that I whip things out really quick. Good luck with your projects.
Wow thank you! You made it look so easy. My caravan seat cushions are not comfy, and when you sit on them, it feels like you are sitting on the board beneath them in a short time! Very uncomfortable. So I need them to be as comfortable as the couch at home!! I want to attempt to do a new cushion to fix this problem! I really searched hard to find a video like yours cos all the other searches for rehopolstering were people just making new sleeve covers! Thank you again what a fantastic trade/art skill you have! Caroline
Thank you for persisting in the search. Many times it is not the cover that needs to be replaced, and I do not believe in wasting money when there are more important things to spend it on. I hope you get the comfiness you require with this video as a guide. Good luck with your project, and happy camping home away from home.
Thank you for your comment. I was taught by a number of people who would remind me that quality was in the little things that are not always seen. Good luck with your project.
Thank you for your comment. I am pleased that the video was of use and with luck solved the problem with the cushion for some time to come,. Good luck with further projects
Thank you for your nice comment. I have not thought of ASMR as some I often have a lot of background noise in them. I work from home so there are often things going on such as dogs barking or my son playing music. I become so focused on the project at hand I do not notice till I am editing When I have a quieter place, I will look into the ASMR videos for subject matter, as I have often been told my voice is quite relaxing. Thank you for your suggestion. Good Luck with your projects. I also have a cooking channel that I am working on called Culinary Skool Reject if you are interested. I am just building it up at the moment.
So glad to find this tutorial. I appreciate the detailed descriptions you provided as you demonstrated the application of the batting. Your work is beautiful! This is my first time in trying to revive a seat cushion. I bought a batting (97% cotton - used by quilters) before seeing this video. While it seems like I can use it...should I ditch that and buy the dacron instead? While I may fail miserably with this project....I have at least learned what to look for / ask for from now on. Many thanks!
Thank you for your comment. I do use quilting cotton for many things, so do not just throw it away as it is often really quite useful for bulking up thin fabrics. I usually use a thick Dacron 2cm/1" thick is perfect for chair seats and seat cushions. I am sure you will have great results now that you have found this video to follow. Keep the Dacron a little tight over the foam and if there is already Dacron on the foam just put the new layer over the top, and you will do fine. I would love to know how you get on. Good luck with your project.
Hello from UK! I love your tutorials and they have helped me so much to cover foam with batting properly. You mention in this video you used to make an inner lining in calico. I want to do this as I dislike stockinette and find it hard to work with. Do you have a video on this? If not did you make the inner same size as the actual cushion cover, add a zipper? Many thanks.
Thank you for your question. I agree that working with Stockinette is a bind. I make the liner out of calico or curtain lining as a general rule but have been going through leftover fabrics these past years and used that as well, it's better than putting it in the landfill. I make the insert about 2cm/1 inch larger so as not to pull the cushion in too much as you really need the resistance on the outer layer of cloth. th-cam.com/video/cutbNnpgjJc/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/lXqdVWN52zY/w-d-xo.html Both of these videos cover the lining covers that went with the cushions. Good luck with your project. I'm returning to the Portsmouth area next year
Excellent Video... Thank you so much for sharing this video... I "Flip" RVs and am recovering a "Click-clack" sofa (hard to find). Truthfully I am going to try to do more like a Cloud Sofa... Wish me luck... Do you have a video on BIG Soft Cushions? Your video is very helpful. Thank you again.

Thank you for your question. I use upholstery thread which you can find in the Coats and Clark election of threads wherever they are sold. If I need to use something else, then it is just a normal thread that I double up. Good luck with your project.
I was thinking of replacing my couch casinos because my fabric is great but the cushions are crap. I was wondering if you could layer foams like this rather than just buying a big block of a single foam type. It seemed like you would get better durability and comfort doing it this way.
Thank you for your comment. The center firmer foam holds up better, and the softer foam on the outsides allows a little give. I have been making seat cushions this way for a number of years now and my friends and clients have been very pleased with the results.
Thank you for your comment. I use The Foam Store, which I believe is a franchise here in the US for all my foam purchases. I found moving from the UK to Houston, I got frustrated looking for the types of foam I had used at home. I decided to for the sake of my videos keep it simple and not go into the large varieties of foams available. I have viewers from all over the world, and their foams might be labeled differently.
I haven't shown a sofa, because I feel if you follow the instructions for a chair it is very similar. You should be able to pick and mix from my videos and find a couple that fit the bill I am hoping to get a sofa in later next month and be able to show that once I have it edited. Good luck with your project
Great video. I'm replacing the covers on a sofa [with 3 cushions]. Do you have a video on making seat cushion covers from scratch? Another way of asking: If you were using a sewing machine and you wanted to make a completely new cover for the cushion in this video do you have a video that shows how to do it?
Thank you for your question and I am very sorry that I somehow missed it. I do have a few videos that cover making up cusions covers. This one is very easy and doesn't have pipping on it, you don't have to put pipping onto seat or back cushions. th-cam.com/video/LEF2vOd0MrI/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/0o9CTQA1Fzg/w-d-xo.html If you feel that you are quite adventurous this this one has pipping on and and the boarder that goes all the way around the cushion. th-cam.com/video/mV4ODHTzTpg/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/AIAhaIcaM28/w-d-xo.html I hope these will be of assistance with your cushion making. Hi, @Be Inspired. Your tutorial in this video has added a component to upholstery that I was unaware of before. Thank you so much for making this knowledge available to us. Be blessed, you and your family. Hope you are all well.
Thank you for your lovely comment. A few years back I decided to video my work, as I will not be able to work forever and with my years of working both in the UK and the US, I felt that I have a lot of knowledge to pass on to othesr. Good luck with your project. Blessings back to you and your family.
Amazing work. I have the reverse problem. Cushions are still good ans firm, but the covers are un bad shape. Would you have any tips on where we can get new covers made to custom sise? Thanks
Thank you. I suggest asking your family and friends, or going on Nextdoor/Facebook for your town and asking people in the community whom they use for sewing or upholstery needs. I'm in Houston and do not advertise what I do, the best advertisement is often word of mouth. Look up local upholsterers or sewing services and read the reviews, if there are no personal recommendations. Good luck finding someone for your project
Great video! I'm having a hard time finding a foam store near me (in south central Pennsylvania). Only finding retail/ craft stores. Any suggestions? I foster cats and they have been marking on my couch. It is a large sectional - not cheap and still in good condition otherwise - so I'd really hate to have to get rid of it. I would love to try to replace the cushions and see if I can save the couch! 🙏
Here in Houston, I use the Foam Store,. I believe they might be a franchise as I have seen other areas around the US. I also had another lady suggest Esty, apparently, there is a site called Global foam or something like that where she had ordered her foam from. She must have been delighted else she wouldn't have made the comment. The reference might be a little further down in this feed of comments. I would suggest spritzing the cats with water when they get on the furniture and also the furniture itself with diluted vinegar to help neutralize the smell. The cats don't like the spray and it does them no harm, if they're scratching up the sides of the furniture hit that with some hairspray. Good luck with your projects and the cats.
Thank you for the question. I use the 2cm/1" thick Dacron for my projects as it gives the most resistance and hides most imperfections. If I have to go much thinner I will double up on the Dacron if needed. Good luck with your project.
Thanks for this. Although I'm American born I tend to keep things or re-do them until they truly fall apart. My mother took tailoring classes and taught me to sew and to appreciate attention to detail. I actually find hand-sewing, as you do with the dacron, to be very soothing. Is there a certain type or thickness of the dacron? Would it be easier to re-stuff a cushion if I made a muslin cover to to over the dacron covered cushions? (I can't wait for my husband to leave town so I can re-stuff his favorite saggy sofa.)
Thank you for your question. I usually use the 1" dacron to wrap cushions with as it fills out any problems with the old cushion and new cover. I would suggest putting a muslin/curtain lining cover over the sewn dacron as it does help the dacron last much longer. I used to wait till my husband had left for working trips abroad so I could get the projects I wanted done without any interference. Good luck with your project.
Thank you for your comment and question. I prefer to use the 1-inch thick Dacron. Most fabric/craft stores should keep a variety of Dacron and a limited range of foam. The Foam Store is my go-to place of choice to buy foam as they will cut it to size and shape if I send them a template. I did have a lady on this thread say she had ordered hers online and was pleased with what she was sent. Good luck with your project.
What an excellent job!!! I am trying to replace my seat cushion pillows on my sofa. I am a heavy-set person. Is there a certain insert I should buy so my cushions can withstand the weight?
Thank you for your question. This video should be able to help you, as it gives more structure to the back seat cushions th-cam.com/video/lgrZlMH8N54/w-d-xo.html Good luck with your project.
Thank you for your comment. I try to give as much information as I can in my videos and think of the types of questions my students used to ask me. Good luck with your project.
great explanation! can i use this method for the back cushion as well using only soft foam? can staples do the job as well? thank you from a woodworker who tries to build himself an outdoor sofa :)
Thank you for the question. This method will work just fine and I also have this other video which might also be of help to you. th-cam.com/video/tz950QGNXL4/w-d-xo.html You can use staples to close the dacron around the foam. I just feel it is the lazy person's way (in the industry) and it is really annoying if you have to take them out to replace the foam insert underneath. As it is for an outside project you really need to think about the staples rusting and leaching the colour through the fabric. This is your project and your way of making them and either way of sewing or stapling will work, it is after all the foundation, and will not be inspected by others. Good luck with your project.
Thank you for your feedback. I used to teach and remember that some students needed to be shown each step and others would get the idea after being told. I hope to have whole lessons in my videos to help all kinds of students Good luck with your projects.

@@jillberry2066 Thank you for the lovely complement regarding my videos. I have a couple of videos regading chairs that I had to replace the foam on the arms. Use a medium density foam as it has the body to keep the shape, just not the stiffness that the denser foam has which would not fold over the arm of the chair in the same way. If you have any quiries please do not hesitate to ask and I will see how I can help you. Your project sounds really classy and fun.
I love how it turned, if you don't mind me asking, if I can mix the foam with filling so it can be more looking like a pillow as my sofa is a project to look like a pillow sofa, I hope to see your feed back ♥️
Thank you for your question and your feedback on the video. I had the opportunity of swapping out feather back seat cushions for foam and wrap, this is the video I put together for it th-cam.com/video/tz950QGNXL4/w-d-xo.html My friend was really pleased with the results. You can pack a loose filling around foam, but I feel this doesn't give a nice finish. The method in the film shows an added layer of dacron on the front and sides, you could add another layer if you wanted a fuller look. I hope this is of use to you, good luck with your project.
Thank you for your video. You do a wonderful job explaining so that I could comprehend what you were saying. I have a question for you please. I have a king size 3" Gel Memory Foam Mattress Pad that was torn when it was being removed from the bed. Can it be cut to fit my kitchen chairs and stools. Also if I can use it, can I wrap it with foam (or batting) and then enclose all with Dacron. My Benches are 20 " x 48" (I have 2) and chairs are 20" x 20" (I have 4). Thank you.
Thank you for your feedback. I would have thought you can use the memory foam got these items. Use a carving /bread knife with a serrated blade to cut it if you do not have an electric carving knife or if you do use one and the blade gets residue stuck to it, or it is awkward to cut through. I have not used memory foam in a long time. As to the rest of the question, yes you can wrap it just like the rest of the video shows. Good luck with your projects.
@@lindahosse8774 I would love to hear about your success. Just take your time, draw out your pattern and keep the knife at rightangles to the foam so your edges are as straight as poddible - even my cuts wonder a little and the batting hides the wonky cuts. Good luck.
@@beinspired1487 This is my first attempt at a complete upholstery project. I think I have everything purchased that I need. I just have a question. If I wrap the cushions with Dacron do I need any other batting (for tops or side edges ETC). IF I do what type do you recommend. I am using Dropcloths for the fabric for a true Farmhouse look. Since these are in the kitchen what can I use to make sure spills don't get through to the cushions.
@@lindahosse8774 Just wrap the foam as I have shown in the video, you don't need to add anything else to it. As for preventing stains, use Scotch Guard. That is what I have been advised works the best from many clients over the years.
How long does the smell from the 3M spray adhesive last? I'm getting ready to put on the batting, but I don't like breathing in the chemical fumes from the glue. Thank you! You do a wonderful job!
Thank you for your question. I find that once the foams are put together it seems to not have too much of an odor. Then when the dacron is wrapped around and the cover on it really isn't a problem. In general, with a well-ventilated area, it dissipates quite quickly. I work with it quite often and I am probably quite used to the smell, but my kids don't comment on it when coming into the house. You could try using a mask and see if that helps. Good luck with your project.
Thank you for posting. Where can I buy the foam to try to attempt this. My son and and I purchased a dos from human society after ours passed , we already had a small dog . Long story short, I have went through 3-4 couches 1 new in less than a year and a half . We’ll come to find out we were blaming wrong dog who starts it . Lol…I would prolly find another forever home . However these were my sons heart and he passed Away Aug 6 2021 , from a car accident. I can not let my self . So trying to slowly Kennel him. Come to find out he has a lot of issues the rescue did not tell…I what all exactly do I need for one cushion. ?
Thank you for your feedback. I am so very sorry to hear of your son's passing. I would be heart broken to lose one of my children. As to dogs that were strays, I have one that I have had to really work hard with as she was a total mess when she was left on my door step. The other thinks she is the diggingest do and the garden I have no problem with, my sofa she has trashed and for some reason really likes the cotton stuffing in the seats. They have both had turns in shredding my bedding - but they do keep me warm at night. Dogs are like children you have to keep an eye on them. As to the foam you will need to measure you seat cushions, front to back, side to side and then the height. Look up for a local Foam Store that will take orders and cut the foam for you, as they will have access to the various deinsities of foam. If you need help with working out your order let me know the dimentions for your seats and I will help you.
@@beinspired1487 Thank you so very much for offering your advice .. Yes dogs are so much like children . They are getting better . One day at a time 🤣. I will call tomorrow as soon as I can find a store to offer the foam . Again Thank you ! 💕
Products are made to force consumerism in the US. All media reinforces this ridiculous and wasteful social value. High quality is mostly available to the wealthy.
Thank you for your feedback. I do use this method for most outdoor/patio furniture, as it gives the best results. The cushions last longer if you bring them into the garage for storage when not being used. In the area I live in, the squirrels tear the cushions apart for the dacron to make their dreys/nests. Good luck with your project.
Thank you for your comment. I have used this method, but getting the plastic out afterwards is not that easy. Although for patio furniture it is a good idea as it helps prevent the foam from going funky from the rain and pollen. I do offer to make interior covers out of cotton to go over the foam, this helps the cushions slide in easily. The cotton cover is 2cm/1" larger on all dimensions (as this keeps the cushion together and the exterior cover is still tight over the interior foam) than the outer cover. I hand sew them shut. This is extra and many people do not bother with them. Most people work with a budget. I hope this is of use to you and good luck with your projects.
I have a video on "How to make a boxed pillow or cushion" All you need to do is leave off the piping and replace the zip border with an extended length of the plain border. When putting the top/bottom of the cushion cover on leave enough space to put the cushion in and hand sew the open side shut. Remember to make the inside cover a good 1"/2cm larger than the outside cover as this allowed the new cushion to fill out the new exterior cover. I also have a video on how to make a T cushion as well. I hope that these videos might be of use to you. Best of luck with your projects
Good question. I would advise you to glue it as it holds the foams together. When I first started out, we didn't glue them together although we did wrap them as I show you in the video. Sometimes the foams would slip against each other as we were folding them into their covers and then they would look a little off along the edges. The glue just helps to stabilize them when being manhandled into place. The 3M spray glue is the best one for the job, although I have used other ones. It doesn't set up straight away, it is the combination of the whole process that keeps everything together. The wrap just helps the foam to slide into place a little better than just the foam. There is often too much friction between some fabrics and the foam. It can be quite a workout. Good luck with your project.
Thank you for this video. I'd like to follow your recommendation for laminating / 'layering' foam. I plan to create a bench style sofa cushion 24x72 inches and 6 inches thick finished. Would I be ok with the following recipe: 4" middle @ 60IFD, sandwiched by 1" 35IFD on top and bottom, then batting at your recommendation? I want to end up with a feel that is FIRM to MEDIUM-FIRM..... but with a little initial give on outside. My supplier offers 2.8 density at 35, 45, & 60 ILD.
Thank you for your feedback. The foam in the center could easily go up to 4 1/2" if you want the seat cushion to look plumper otherwise, your plan will give you a nice foam base for your seat cushion. As to the dacron/batting wrap, I tend to use a 1" thick for my seats and seat cushions as it gives more resistance. I seem to think that it is the 45 that I use more often. It is what every my supplier cuts for me so there is never a tag on it. I hope this is of use, good luck with your project.
Thank you for your question. I order the foam I use from my local Foam Store, which I believe is a franchise as I have seen adverts for them in various cities throughout America. I advise people to order from a company that deals with foam rather than picking it up at your local craft shop as it is usually overpriced for the quality you are paying for. I did have a lady say she ordered hers online, so Google for suppliers and see what comes up, or even visit your local upholsterers, they might be able to help as they will be local to you. Good luck with your project.
Happened on your videos looking for information on sewing curtains, yet another well done presentation with a dash of humor. Clarification please, so if a cushion has an inner cover over the foam, higher quality work?
Thank you for your feedback. Yes, as a general rule. You will find that the quality of the fabric and furniture is usually better. Cheaper furniture only has the outer cover over the cushions, which means the integrity of the dacron will eventually degrade and tear apart due to the friction of the fabric against the danron
I personally have always tried to keep the quality of my work high, no matter the project. That's how I get more projects to film, for all of you to watch and learn from.
@@beinspired1487, your welcome. It is over 100 year old Stickley rocker with a loose cushion my Grandmother in the mid century reupholstered in stark white mid century style fabric. She was one who enjoyed the nicer things in life, so makes sense higher quality re-upholstering. Trouble is due to circumstances out of my control, was soiled and despite all my efforts, not coming out. Shame, as no one ever sat in it (probably because so low to the floor). Even got to the under cover, thankfully not to the Dacron, foam is in fantastic shape, however did sun each side for a day. Mr. Stickley design intent was the craft and rustic, therefore, Modern fabric was really the wrong choice. Been about three, four months and still haven't found a suitable fabric for the chair.
@@beinspired1487, agree, best to high quality so lasts a long time and enjoyable. Thought had a grey zipper for the trouser I am tailoring, have other colors, though be the wrong choice and bother me, so waiting for a proper grey to come in the post. Good thing I am Autistic so don't have clients. LOL
@@adrielrowley I have OCD tendencies, so often have to remind myself not to overthink some projects. Sometimes, I take a day or two just working out how I shall get the best results out of the fabric I have been given. I do have a video on how to make a boxed cushion, which might be of help to you. Good luck with your project.
Thank you for the question. The thicker piece of foam in the center is high-density/extra firm foam and the thinner one on each side is low-density/super soft foam. I am sure there are numbers that go with them, but those are the labels I have been given in the UK and over here in the US. I hope that helps. Good luck with your project.
Please explain why you chose to laminate the foam for a seat cushion rather than simply selecting a single piece of high density foam of the desired dimension. Was it less expensive? More convenient?
Thank you for your question. The price of the foam is about the same, so no huge savings or expenditures there. I do it this way as the extra firm foam takes a while to break down and soften up. The supersoft gives a little cushioning and the illusion of giving to the new seat cushion. And so far the cushions I have made like this over the past 6 or 7 years have not been complained about or upgraded. I used to make them in medium-density foam and wrap the dacron around them and would find that clients would want new seat cushions a lot earlier. Although I like earning money I do really prefer giving Value for money. Good luck with your projects.
Where are you located in the US? Do you or does your company redo sofa cushions for people out of state? My bench cushion foam on a custom sofa less than a year and a half old completely bottomed out already! Thank you for sharing this video 💜
Thank you for your question. I am located just north of Houston, Texas. I work alone on projects as I no longer work full-time or have a company. I do this to show people how to do the work so they get a nice finished look when their projects are completed. I would suggest either going back to where you purchased the bench and asking them to sort the problem out or ordering a better-quality foam from your local Foam Store, I think they are a franchise or an upholstery business close to you and take your seat cushion into them they can help you.
@@beinspired1487 What kind of foam would you recommend for a bench cushion that gets used a lot every day? I reached out to the company (in Charlotte, NC.) I sent pictures, they said the crown collapsed and they would replace it for a hipping fee. But, my guess is the new cushion will just collapse again. I am in the process of learning about foam and trying to find an upholsterer in my area that will build a cushion that will last 15 or so years. I live in NW FL about 8-9 hours from you. Thank you so much for getting back to me.
@@1CelloOne Thank you for the question. I would suggest putting extra firm foam on the bench as it should last a long time. If you email me some photos and dimensions of the bench I can give you better advice. I'm sorry but I am still laughing about the dome collapsing, what a load of crock. My email in in the "About section". If you click on the name of my channel you should be able to find it there. My son and I could do a house call one long weekend and fix the bench for you. 😏
Thank you for your question. I used to do my cushions in the medium density and found that the foam tended to give after a while so swapped for the firmer foam with the softer on either side if you can flip the cushions, otherwise just on the one side of the seat cushion if it can only be used one way. My ladies and gents seem to prefer the firmness of their new seat cushions. The softer foam, along with the dacron just makes them feel like there is a little give as you sit down. The seat cushions seem to last a little longer too. As the foam is cellular in its makeup the cell walls eventually breakdown and the foam loses its durability and will need to be replaced at some point I hope this answers your question and good luck with your projects.
Thank you for the question. I purchase the foam I use from The Foam Store, which I believe is a franchise, there should be locations throughout the US. As to the foam. In the video, I used super-soft on either side of a piece of extra-firm. Some places might refer to this as low-density and firm-density and in others there might be numbers to denote the firmness of the foams. I know that a couple of ladies have also purchased their foam online and had it sent to them. Good luck with your search.
I have a Brand new sofa bed from NEXT but the foam is rapped in the same material show here, but when I sit on it , it is so uncomfortable. Can you put feather cushions or Wool on the top layer of cushions for plump them up ?
Thank you for your question. I am sorry to say that you might find replacing the seat cushions with better-quality foam as well as Dacron, or just adding an extra layer of the Dacron to the existing ones will do the trick. Unfortunately, the price paid for new furniture doesn't reflect the quality of foam they use for the seating. I make new seat cushions for new furniture more often than I like to admit. Try the extra wrap on one seat cushion and see what you think before doing them all, although you can take the wrap off and reuse it on new foam if required. Good luck with your troubleshooting.
Here in the US from The Foam Store - I think there might be outlets all over the country. I just send an order in with the sizes and density required then it is cut to the size or shape (if I post a pattern to them) and I pick it up a few days later. Good luck with your project
Thank you for your question. If there is leather on both sides of the cushion then no. If there is only one side of the cushion done in leather and velcro on the underside to keep the cushion in place, then yes. You only need to do the top side of the foam seat cushion with the softer foam and increase the harder foam by 2cm/1" to compensate for the missing layer. I hope this makes sense. Good luck with your project.
Could you please let me know where to order foam. What density are you using. For a 4 inch finished thickness, would you suggest 1 inch soft and 3 inch high density
Thank you for your question. I order my foam from The Foam Store here in Houston, I believe they are part of a franchise so there should be more of them throughout the States. Otherwise, you will have to look up a local company close to you that can offer more variety than a craft store can. As for the depth of the cushions, if it is a double-sided cushion then I would put in a 3 1/2" center of extra firm/high-density foam with a layer of 1" super soft/low-density foam on either side as shown in the video. If the cushion can only be used one way then I would advise you to use 4" extra firm/high-density with a layer of 1" super soft/low-density foam on top, but still wrap the dacron all the way around the seat cushion as shown in the video. Good luck with your project.
@@charlottegasperlin3992 I prefer to use the 1" thick Dacron as it is more forgiving. If there is a problem with lining up the foam sides or if the original cover has stretched a bit the dacron will fill out and smooth the edges a bit better.
Thank you for a very useful video. Can you tell me what weight of Dacron you use? I seems that it comes in various weights ranging from 2oz to about 12oz per metre. I thought I would go somewhere in the middle, maybe 6 oz per metre, but wondered what you would advise. Many thanks.
Thank you for your feedback on the video. The dacron I use to wrap the seat cushions and to cover projects is usually 3/4"/2cm thick as it gives enough resistance and makes seat covers look plump and inviting to sit on. I sometimes use the thinner quilting batting for the area that only needs a little filler here and there. I hope this is helpful and good luck with your projects.
@@beinspired1487 Thank you so much for your prompt reply! I have not found anywhere to buy some locally ( Northern Scotland) so I have been looking on line and it gives a weight per metre rather than a thickness. Now that I know what thickness to look for, I may wait until I can actually see and measure it.
@@susiep6190 I lived in Aberdeen for a couple of years and seem to remember having to order my materials then. I certainly remeber having to ordering materials when I first stared out in this business when I lived in the south of England. I would go for a mid weight and if needed double it over. You can later order the heavier weight, I just find it easier to make the depth up as it doesn't split very easily if you get the deeper dacron and want to make it thinner.
@@susiep6190 I lived in Rose Cottage toward at the top of the hilll by the football stadium, also in a flat near Tesco and Union Street as well as another place which I can not remember off hand. I really enjoyed living there as you could walk everywhere and not need a car. Winters were a bit cold for me as I was used to the tropical weather.
Thank you for your question. Dacron is used as a filler and smooths out most imperfections there might be on a chair, seat/back cushion, or chair seat. It puffs out the cover a little making the chair look more inviting and comfortable. Sometimes I am only replacing the seat cushion and because the older cover might have stretched I can shred some Dacron or use Polifil to fill out any corners. You will find putting the cover on a lot easier with a Dacron wrap as some fabrics have fire retardancy sprayed on them creating more friction with uncovered foam, it also holds the foam together when manipulating it into the cover. I use it on the arms and back of chairs when I am re-upholstering them too. I hope this answers your question, good luck with your project
Thank you for your question. Having just watched the video, I think you are asking about the fabric around the interir springs base. I am not quite sure what they call that as it has been many years since I've had to use it and what they call it here in the states is sometimes different from other countries. I would suggest you use a calico/plain cotton to sew onto an original spring base if you can not find something similar. Using materials that you have available to you for most repairs as long as it is a similar weigh are perfect for most projects. The fabric looks more flimsy than is really was, having just worn through in areas giving it a more delicate look. Good luck with your projects.
Thank you for the question. I use either 3M Multipurpose or 3M Hi-Strength Contact Adhesives for my projects as they seem to work the best. Good luck with your project.

WOW! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. Excellent. Great tips. Thank you.

I appreciate this video, as I want to add new cushions to my couch. Thank you for showing your wonderful skills!

@@beinspired1487 Thank you for getting back to me! 🙂 I understand and appreciate the guidance. I will be buying the Dacron today.
Like everything that needs attention, take you time and do not rush.

Beautiful. You should be able to tell us the specs or brand of the foam that you recommend

What type of foam and Dacron did you use? Any ideas where I can purchase? Thanks for the wonderful video!

You can use staples to close the dacron around the foam.

My friend was really pleased with the results.

That is what I have been advised works the best from many clients over the

Thank you for doing this video. Very well done!
Would this process be the same for outdoor cushions?
Thank you for your feedback.
I do use this method for most outdoor/patio furniture, as it gives the best results. The cushions last longer if you bring them into the garage for storage when not being used.
In the area I live in, the squirrels tear the cushions apart for the dacron to make their dreys/nests.
Good luck with your project.
I’ve seen where they use painters plastic and a vacuum to shrink it down, which makes it easier to fit. Do you like this method?
This was wonderful Do you also have any videos on making a lining and the seat cushion cover
Is the glue necessary? Would it be ok to leave the foam just stacked without glue?
Where can I get new foam for my seats I just can’t find any that is good for seating thanks I’d appreciate the help

What kind of foam did you use as well as the softer foam? Thank you.

What is the purpose of the softer top and bottom? Can you just purchase the firm cushion to fit?
Thank you for your question. I used to do my cushions in the medium density and found that the foam tended to give after a while so swapped for the firmer foam with the softer on either side if you can flip the cushions, otherwise just on the one side of the seat cushion if it can only be used one way.
My ladies and gents seem to prefer the firmness of their new seat cushions. The softer foam, along with the dacron just makes them feel like there is a little give as you sit down. The seat cushions seem to last a little longer too.
As the foam is cellular in its makeup the cell walls eventually breakdown and the foam loses its durability and will need to be replaced at some point
I hope this answers your question and good luck with your projects.
Where can I buy and what are the names of all the foams you used???
Thank you for this video, where did you get the foam from ?
Here in the US from The Foam Store - I think there might be outlets all over the country. I just send an order in with the sizes and density required then it is cut to the size or shape (if I post a pattern to them) and I pick it up a few days later.

Shall I alter any of your procedure for leather cushions on a MCM SOFA WITH 2 LONG (WIDE?) CUSHIONS?
Thank you for your question. If there is leather on both sides of the cushion then no. If there is only one side of the cushion done in leather and velcro on the underside to keep the cushion in place, then yes.
You only need to do the top side of the foam seat cushion with the softer foam and increase the harder foam by 2cm/1" to compensate for the missing layer. I hope this makes sense.

Thank you so much! Is the dacron 1 inch thickness also?
@@charlottegasperlin3992 I prefer to use the 1" thick Dacron as it is more forgiving. If there is a problem with lining up the foam sides or if the original cover has stretched a bit the dacron will fill out and smooth the edges a bit better.

The dacron I use to wrap the seat cushions and to cover projects is usually 3/4"/2cm thick as it gives enough resistance and makes seat covers look plump and inviting to sit on.

what is dacron for? do we need to use it in upholstery for chairs?
