Boston College alum here. Oshie, Toews, Duncan line was terrifying in UND v., BC. It's a miracle we ever won against them. Three absolute class players.
I think it would get really boring seeing the same guys shoot every time in the NHL. This was legendary because of its uniqueness. If the NHL followed this, Oshie would have been shooting every time for the Blues and this wouldn't have been out of the ordinary at all. Also changing the rule would mean we lose shootout moments like the Malik and Schlemko goals, the unlikely heroes coming through for their team. This is a more interesting storyline than "McDavid shoots four times in a row for the tenth time this season to lead the Oilers to win", especially when it can be tough to find storylines in the midst of an 82-game slog.
@@hockey_highlights_and_more I think I like to see a random 3rd line defensive defenseman taking a penalty just for the fact that it is incredibly rare. I’ve seen offensive skill players shoot loads of penalties but what about those guys who really have no business shooting the puck in the first place. It also gives the team with greater depth the advantage so you can’t just have one person able to shoot. It’s more team oriented because everyone has to be good when it comes up.

I watched this live so I was so excited when Oshie was traded to the Caps. The biggest pickup since Ovechkin if you ask me. TJ was huge in winning Washington's first ever Stanley Cup.
With respect to Oshie, he secured his team 1 point in a preliminary game, by going 3x 5-hole... In the end US ended the tournament only in 4th place. Most legendary shootout ever must be Peter Forsberg in Lillehammer 1994 Olympics. He decided the gold medal game for Sweden with a never before seen move. A move that dozens copies after him later on. THAT was legendary.
It was actually Kenta Nillson who did that move before Forsberg. Not in a penalty shot though, but in a breakaway against USA 1989. Forsberg’s penalty shot is still legendary though.
@@Wannabesimracer Wow! I just checked the goal, I had no idea! Thanks, nice one! Didn`t hear about K.Nilsson before, he was quite good it seems. Isn`t this goal known as the Forsberg deke though?:D I guess an Olympic goal was just more catchy and memorable..
Shhhh!!!! Don't bring up facts that ruin the narrative. You see, they can't talk about Toews going 3 for 3, because then someone will mention Kane going 0 for 2
Amazing one on one player. Oshie did that against Bob when he was winning those vezina trophys and at his best. On the biggest international stage. He could have easily gone perfect he just missed on those 2 missed attempts..its called a game of inches for a reason..absolute legendary performance regardless..
It's the definition of clutch. Oshie's shootout record is insane but to do that with the pressure of the US-Russia rivalry, it just puts it on another level.
Watched this game live. Great game from start to finish. Best game of the whole Olympics that year. I remember blues had the most players in the Olympics that year too.
Легендарная серия) Оши очень крут, и сейчас с удовольствием смотрю за его игрой) Болею конечно за Россию, но отличный хоккей и великолепные игроки не имеют границ и делают ИГРУ такой интересной вместе!
Team USA from these Olympics have to be one of my faborite teams ever assembled in hockey. Sure they came up a bit short to an ungodly stacked Canada, but it was a helluva effort and tons of fun to watch.
I remember this game. Got up at 6 A.M. after a night out at the bar to watch the USA take on Russia. I'll never forget this moment. This was amazing, but they were over focused on Canada, cause what happened 4 years earlier. They lost that game 1-0, then got blown out by Finland 4-0, and no medal. I ripped the coach for replacing Joe Pavelski with Patrick Kane on the line with Phil Kessel, and James Van Riemsdyk. Those 3 were so productive in the Olympics. Patrick Kane was a champion, a great player, the girl said NO, but for the USA, he always came up short.
My local watering hole got a permit to open at like 530AM so we could all come watch this game. Beers at 6 AM, my first time knowing who Oshie was... It did not disappoint!
There should be at least one international competition or extra league tournament every year. It's a total disgrace we don't have world class level hockey games to watch since about 10 years. I can understand sometimes in soccer, there are too much extra tournaments, but that's so much better than just nothing. Maybe they could do the Spengler cup in a better timing so the best players can participate... And it could be a great way to promote hockey around the world... Imagine a tournament when some NHL or AHL teams plays against KHL and Swiss teams. That would be interesting to watch.
Bob was in a lot of trouble for this shootout going into it. Both Oshie and Kane were on team USA and both played against him 6 times a year in the regular season. Both guys had also made it a habit of embarrassing him in shootouts in the NHL
Where have been??? Missing such great coverage of the greatest sport in the world!!! Yuge fan and new Sub. Bless you bruh. Excellent work my man excellent!!! Let’s Go Caps!!!!
I named my dog after Oshie. Back in the day, he reminded me of my favorite player - Peter Forsberg. I damn near cried when we traded him to the Caps. Doug Armstrong never knew what he had…
as a LONG TIME FAN of the st louis blues including the full on rebuild in the 2000s i recall all the times oshie hit the ice at scott trade center and made goalies look foolish in shootouts. oshie was always nasty skilled at the shootout. great hands, smooth easy stride, picks a spot and goes for it. we are a long time removed from that now. though we did win a cup in 2019, i think we are far far away from another one. if anything i think we are closer to needing a full on rebuild
Oshie is the man, idc what anyone will ever say. He's a great player with a great head on him, any team is lucky to have a caliber player like him. I honestly wished the Avs woulda picked him up at some point.
While I'm biased as a Pens fan, in an era defined by names like Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Fleury and others, I will still consider Erik Christensen as one of the best shootout players I've ever seen. Overall just an average forward for the most part, he just became CASH MONEY when the time came for a shootout. I even had to check this today and the stats back me up. Amongst all NHL players with 50+ shootout attempts, he owns the BEST conversion rate of 52.7% (29 of 55). Was so much fun to watch back in the day.
The greatest shootout player to ever touch the ice was Crosby back when he was on IIHF Team Canada. He was lights out every attempt. You almost knew he was going to score.
Remember, this was only a preliminary round game. If you want the same sort of scenario in a metal round game check out the 2007 IIHF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. US vs Canada, Meuller vs Toews.
Couldn't have happened to n for a better guy... Osh is good a person off the ice as he is on the ice... He watched my son tie a game up n get the ot winner in their barn once... He got to meet him after , n Osh was congratulating him on the game... Most down to earth dude you could meet...

Johnathon Toews....2007 IIHF Junior Championship....don't know if anyone mentioned that.
I was working nights in the oilfield in Wyoming in February when this happened. It energized me for a week.
I remember watching this game. It was one of the most rememberable I‘ve ever seen.
This was legendary. Nobody knew you could do this and Oshie became a household name after this.
Jonathan Toews at 2007 IIHF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP was unbelievable
Was watching this live, dudes got moon eyes. I knew he wouldn’t miss a shot, every time they panned to him his eyes told the whole story. Dude was in another realm
@@peace_love_unity he played around 10 years in NHL, won Stanley Cup with Edmonton if I remember correct and he was called the Magic Man
When Oshie played a game 2 days after his dad died and got a hat trick I legit cried
I remember watching this live. Absolute madness
If this shootout makes Oshie a legend, what does the 2007 world junior shootout make Jonathan Toews?
Shhhh!!!! Don't bring up facts that ruin the narrative. You see, they can't talk about Toews going 3 for 3, because then someone will mention Kane going 0 for 2
And what of Forsberg’s 2 for 2?
Amazing one on one player. Oshie did that against Bob when he was winning those vezina trophys and at his best. On the biggest international stage. He could have easily gone perfect he just missed on those 2 missed attempts..its called a game of inches for a reason..absolute legendary performance regardless..
honestly Jonathan Toews in the world juniors to me stands out more but yes this was epic by Oshie.
Still to this day call him TJ Sochi. I am not even American, I just love how legendary that shootout was. Lol.
Team USA from these Olympics have to be one of my faborite teams ever assembled in hockey. Sure they came up a bit short to an ungodly stacked Canada, but it was a helluva effort and tons of fun to watch.
Kinda funny that Oshie and Kovalchuk played together in WSH at one point.
He was teammates with Ovechkin and won the Cup together with him.
Both guys had also made it a habit of embarrassing him in shootouts in the NHL
i remember waking up like 6am to watch this game
Watching how bobrovski moves his body freaks me out. These guys are next level for
Oshie is one of the best! Красава Оши!!
Doesn’t get much better than this…just like the “old days”…
It's the hockey version of Rock, Paper, Scissors!😃
i remember watching this live, this shit was so insane
Reminds me of Troy. How Achilles took out their best warrior.
Best player of the team vs the best player of the other team.
Miss seeing this
Great video. Agreed that the NHL would be wise to adopt this format.
having patrick kane of all people just sitting on the bench during a shootout is so crazy to me
Oshie is the man, idc what anyone will ever say. He's a great player with a great head on him, any team is lucky to have a caliber player like him. I honestly wished the Avs woulda picked him up at some point.
Washington had a great shootout trio with Kuznetzov, Oshie and Backstrom. Individually my top three in no particular order are Oshie, Kane and Datsyk
We miss International Olympic Hockey. Don't know what happened but those were the days
That shootout was something!
Most down to earth dude you could meet...
i remember watching this live on TV in a sports store
Jussi Jokinen all time greatest shutout legend. Then the massive story or Oshi. Great video and commentary!
Popped the question to my wife on the same day this happened, so the day is memorable for two reasons.
auditioning for secret base rewinds :) but i still love it
