    I’m only half way through this video and man I gotta say this is one of the best lr3 videos on TH-cam and I’ve seen them ALL. Awesome to see it taken for a real rip and none of this dirt road mountain bs that any vehicle could do! Great video you should have way more views!

      You just made our day! Thank you so much for the kind and encouraging words. Our staff is comprised of Navy SEALs, Marine Force Recon and infantry, Army Rangers, Air Force pilots, and the list goes on. Point is we have lots of mobility training and want to share our love and passion for that. And stay tuned for more aggressive trails ; this was our trial run with the LR3!

      Thank you for the compliment and letting us know we’re heading in the right direction. Being a long time LR3 owner, would you share your insight as for the strengths and weaknesses of the LR3 over time; anything we need to keep an eye out for or not really have to worry about maintenance tips, etc?

      @@MilitaryMobility my family had owned a discovery 3 for getting on 10 years as well (HSE) model. It was fantastic in all aspects up until it's last year where the electronics started to become very expensive! The first problem was the car immobilized it'self... I can't remember the details really but there were some expensive invoices as a result. Mechanically they are pretty decent though. The only bigger issue with the D3 Compared to the D1 & D2 is that you have to removed the entire shell in order to access the gearbox properly, the main bushes etc...

      @@engineeruk8667 thanks for sharing your long term experience with the LR3; and sorry to hear of the electronic troubles. Do you have the GAP iid tool? Guys, you heard it below. One of the best no b.s. simple, straight forward off-road challenge tests done on an LR3. I took my 2013 LR4 on a solo 2000 mile "5 deserts of SoCal" trip and spent the entire time grinning and saying "Man this vehicle is awesome!" (to myself, while laughing manically and doing crazy routes.) Glad to see some great driving, excellent mechanical sympathy, and open minds. Note, you probably want to get rid of the Duratracks and replace them with something with beefier sidewalls sooner rather than later. They look new but have a horrible reputation. Most LR3/LR4 owners are running BFG KO2s (LT version). I also ran Cooper S/T MAXX but they're super heavy, pretty noisy, and ended up backtracking to Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws (only XL.) When I do the next 2000 miles solo, I'd probably switch the Coopers back on. I would not EVER go anywhere off-grid with the Duratracks. Anyway, great stuff. Also, sounds like a great team you have and a great mission. Keep kicking ass. If y'all are interested you can check out my "wheels and tires" post and my trip posts over at troyangrignon dot com

    • @MilitaryMobility
      @MilitaryMobility  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great stuff and thanks for sharing your journey with the LR4. As for the tires, we chose the Duratracs as both our LR3’s live in the snow and no tire performs as well both on the trail and in the snow. We have a large community that run them up here and have had positive experiences. On our other rigs that are more trail only focused we run BFG’s exclusively, great tires too.

    Great video, thanks for suggesting it the other day. Very impressive capability, to be honest, I had written these off for quite a while because of the fully independent suspension, but clearly for less than totally hardcore stuff its not really an issue. I did a little research, one thing that impresses me about these is the crawl ratio. It's about 44 to 1 on these, on my 4Runner it's only 33 to 1. Now to find one locally to test drive!

      I love my rovers and cant thank you guys enough by showing what these rigs can really do and give joy to the owners. Until you own and drive one it is hard to dismiss the chat about how horrible rovers are but if you really think about it, you dont need to modify one to keep up with the modified Jeeps and other brands etc.
      Take the Toyota’s as an example, you need to beef it up to be on par with the rover and in the end you spend more on them than a rover. Same goes with the Jeeps out there that cost a lot of $$$$ like Harley’s etc.
      I love my Jeep and Toyota’s but the most fun so far is the rover collection I have. Thanks again guys. You are all awesome and God bless us all.

      @MilitaryMobility  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We just wrapped up filming on the Air Vs. Coil comparison. It was so much fun to record out in Moab! Can't wait to finish editing and get it uploaded.
      As for tire size, people have mounted 35”s although we don’t advise it because you’ll have no uptravel and will over tax your CV’s. 32” (31.5-32.5”) tends to be our sweet spot for ground clearance and travel. Do your research and see what the actual size is on the tires despite the listed size (all manufacturers are a little bit different). Please note with 32”s depending on your front bumper you may need to do some slight trimming to maintain full turning radius (exercise this in off camber situations not just on flat ground) and you may have some slight rubbing in the passenger rear wheel well where a heater hose runs; there is an easy mod to re-route this a couple inches to the side.

    LR3 = Discovery 3 for the rest of us lol
    Also I like the newer Land Rover systems such as the 5th gen Haldex in mine that doesn’t require wheel slip to engage 4WD. It will automatically use 4WD on all start off manoeuvres and also in certain terrain response modes at certain speeds as well as other conditions like a steep incline etc. So it’s more predictive. However it is also reactive and will engage via the viscous coupling at times of slip/wheel spin but only requires a wheel to spin/slip ⅛ of a rotation (ie only momentarily break traction) before the rear wheels get torque. It’s very very good.
    Um but sorry the tow hitch isn’t doing what it’s supposed (protecting it) to do at all. This is not the function of a tow hitch. It’s for towing and sometimes recovery with the right attachment. The tow hitch actually reduces the departure angle & you’d not have scraped had there been no tow hitch installed. Silly comment.
    I’m unsure why people are surprised and impressed with the Land Rover’s performance. It’s a Land Rover, what do they expect. They are designed to do this stuff. They essentially invented off-roading. And they do it in luxury and style with little fuss.
    Modern autos are far superior for off-roading than manuals.
    Puts it in high range at the end and says “immediately more torque”?? That would be the other way round. Low range multiplies torque not high.

    • @MilitaryMobility
      @MilitaryMobility  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comments and the info on the Haldex system; it’s in a lot of cars brands now-a-days and for LR it’s in the Freelander, Evoque, and Discovery Sport. Was doing some research to see if it’s in the new Defender but not seeing that initially.
      As for the hitch we know the manufactured intent is not as a rock guard and stated for that particular obstacle it would of cleared it without; however we did get our other LR3 stuck on a more difficult obstacle and it started to tear the stock rear bumper off. So as an affordable alternative we were trying this out. Steel rear bumpers are near $3k here and you still would have to get the Rhino high clearance hitch for $650 (we have it on our other LR3). Yes we have decreased the departure angle by doing this and we were torn on the decision but figured we’d try it out. A common example is people adding sliders which decreases break over angle but offers protection so you don’t ruin your body should the obstacle choose to do so.
      You got me with the torque bit. It’d been a long day!

      Bags are very reliable and it’s usually, 1) electronics 2) valves, that cause a failure. Oddly enough the cheap looking plastic lines have proven to be very strong. We bring an extra (old) front/ rear air shock on our long expeditions but not for most wheeling. If your bags are newer and good condition they should be very strong. We put 200k miles before one of ours developed the slowest leak. Past that if there is still concern, might be a good candidate for coils 👍

      Hi, I usually am a DIE HARD maximize approach and departure angles at all cost type of person. We took our grey LR3 (not this black one) out on some nasty rocks and the rear bumper was getting hung up bad. I had the very expensive Rhino hitch which gave full towing capacity and maximized departure angle but of course did nothing for protection (that’s not its job). For a long time I was going to get the big heavy (and super expensive, I swear people take advantage of LR owners in this regard) rear steel bumper but then realized I didn’t want to go that route like I have with our Jeeps. I wanted to keep the rig capable yet cost effective. So I came up with the idea of using a hitch as protection. It works really well and realize this will not help the corners of your rig but we haven’t has any issues with this (yet!). So yes I’d recommend it, depending on what you plan to do with your rig. Here’s the link and I’ve made a wiring harness and hitch install videos, just need to post them. You’re welcome E-trailer, sponsor us! www.etrailer.com/hitch-2008_Land+Rover_LR3.htm

I too am not interested in spending half the price I paid for the lr3 on bumpers, so the hitch seems like a good compromise as long as you aren't trying to fit a "full size" spare underneath. I'll probably move it to a roof rack eventually, but thought i would see how i like it underneath for a bit.

    Do the extension rods take away some of its off road capabilities ?

    • @MilitaryMobility
      @MilitaryMobility  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is a great question and one that leads to the understanding that any modifications made to any vehicle will have pros and cons. Vehicles are designed a certain way and it’s important to know what you are changing and why when you modify it.
      As for the LR3, it is very capable off-road on its stock sized 255/55/R19 (30”) tires. When you raise the vehicle into extended mode it gains ground clearance to clear obstacles at the cost of the air shock’s allowance for uptravel. There is also super extended mode which will automatically happen if the vehicle senses its frame is on something; this essentially maximizes the air shock lift to its full potential and eliminates any uptravel, making for a rougher ride quality but in the name of getting up over the obstacle where it will then lower.
      But say you still want more ground clearance? Either from the type of off-roading you’re doing or (for some) to have a more aggressive look. You put on bigger tires (for us 32”), which nets us 1” higher ground clearance than stock (2” bigger tire at hub center is a 1” gain). What the Johnson Rods do is trick the air suspension sensors to thinking they are lower than they actually are so it raises the vehicle a bit (how much depending on what rods you buy) to put it back in spec. So you’ve permanently gained ground clearance (1” is a lot even though it doesn’t sound like it!) at the cost of a little bit of uptravel. Now with the conservative scenario I’ve detailed chances are you won’t notice any deficit to the ride quality because you’ll rarely be at those limits of uptravel. Now for the guys who max the air shock to put 35”s in, it’s going to be a bumpy ride! The LR3 has bad articulation as it is, our opinion is to not go that big, it will lead to diminished performance and excessive wear on parts (cv’s).
      So in summary the John Rods are an effective and affordable mod that can be easily installed (or removed) in about 30 minutes. The same functionality and more can be had with the Gap IID tool (which we also have) which allows you to custom preset or control your vehicles height whenever you want, as well as a host of other vital controls and troubleshooting capabilities. So us having both is redundant however we like it and it’s working for us. Hope this helps!

    • @MilitaryMobility
      @MilitaryMobility  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ed, we have 18” rims as well. If you have a gas V8 that is a requirement due to the massive brakes (this is a good thing). The V6’s have smaller brakes. When we talk about rim and tire size in terms of clearance, one doesn’t depend on the other. Example; stock it came with 20” rims and 29” tires. We’re running about a 1.5” lift with our Johnson Rods. We’ve had to do some very light trimming of the plastic under the bumper near the front wheel wells (with a dremel tool) to maintain max turning ability but that was it. Hope this helps

    • @MilitaryMobility
      @MilitaryMobility  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@edornelas9976 We sure didn’t. I know in the beginning it can be a bit a daunting to cut on or modify your vehicle (at least it was for me) but this trimming project would be a great start, it’s a minimal job with low consequences. But once you start working on your rig like that it opens up a whole new world of confidence and seeing things in a different way. In your driveway or other controlled area just turn your vehicle full left and right (with the new tires on) and drive a few feet. You’ll hear the sound of the tires touching the rubber too. Go back to straight. Trim where you see it rubbing, it’ll be under the front bumper of each wheel well. Repeat the process a few times (to include a bit of articulation; I.e approach to driveway, etc) until you have full turning with no sound. Mission complete! Let us know how it turns out!
      Those are frame dampeners, I know they look weird! They combat harmonic resonance and vibrations coming off the frame. It’s a very low tech way of solving whatever issues they were having when designing the LR3.

      @@ZoneTelevision Totally understood. We don’t aim to sway anyone one way or the other but will share our experiences. We currently have 2x 2008 LR3 HSE’s (this black one and another grey one with a coil conversion, which makes it much more reliable but takes out some features you get with the Air). We’ve owned the grey one for 2 years now and have only ever replaced the worn out hood and lift gate struts, and changed the oil; and it gets it time in the trail and the highway. This one we repaired the air suspension as it was donated to us broken. From my research the air suspension is what typically fails on these vehicles and once you understand how it works it’s not difficult to troubleshoot or repair (we’ve used some EBay parts to save money and it’s been working out great). You can also easily mod the air system to be much more reliable by isolating the air shocks (it’s usually the air hoses or valves that leak). As with any vehicle being handy with a wrench definitely saves big on labor costs (almost everything is on TH-cam). Depending on your budget these are somewhat affordable rigs compared to other options but parts are much more expensive. As with any rig, take your time and look for one that’s been taken care of and where you’re getting a fair deal. Good luck!

    You said 17" rims....Everything I can find on these V8 LR3's says 18" is the smallest rim that will fit without converting to V6 brakes. Can anyone else verify this? Id sure like to run 17's on our V8!

      Yes I misspoke they are 18” rims (we’re making a video edit) they are indeed required due to the enormous yet powerful brake size. The diesels (if you can find one in the U.S.) have smaller brakes and allow for 17” rims. While it’d be nice to have a bit more sidewall we tow quite often and enjoy the bigger brakes.

      @@MilitaryMobility hiya mate. So the sunroom has 4 drain ports. And if you look at your front pillars the material is peeling away. It’s a common sign the front 2 are blocked. It’s around 50 pounds to fix and lots available online for it hope this helps

      We've have over 500,000 miles on our 3x LR3's, have a Disco2 with 175k and a Defender 300tdi with 140k and they have not been without maintenance like any other vehicle would require but have proven very reliable for us. Maybe we're lucky, or know how to maintain vehicles adequately. In either case, we hope you're having better luck with whatever you moved on to and are still getting to explore the backcountry.
