'The definitive version'? That's a very high bar indeed. Although the Union tour was truly incredible; the band all being on a 'high' through reuniting disparate souls. I saw at least two gigs on the tour - I would need to dig out ticket stubs & programmes - and even grumpy ol' Rick was having a good time and stony faced Steve grimaced his way to a smile. Jon's voice? Peerless. Squire? just enough Martell (other cognacs are available) to be perfect. Okay, now that I relate that and the (High The) memory refocusses... Yeah, You are bang on!
No doubt the studio version is beyond amazing.. and some rather very powerful boot legs. Dare i say the recent geeks tour was amazing, saw 4 shows, and all Awakens were amazing.. however one show almost brough the roof down.. it was so tweaked with strong energy ... my hairs still stand on end from the show. Jon sounded amazing. The magic can still be duplicated with the right tools and Anderson at the helm of the ship, taking the fans back to the shores of the topographic Ocean. ❤
The whole of the Going For The One album is perfection from the first to the very last note. Yes at the height of their musical power. Who's defining this live version as 'definitive'? In my humble opinion, the best live version captured as a recording was on their Tormato tour at Wembley Empire Pool, October 1978.
It is subjective, my vote (and I have a recording of it) is for the version broadcast live on June 9, 1979 from Chicago is the winner of best version. All versions are amazing, moving, soulful and masterful. You should hear that 1979 version. I saw them play the next night and the light show was equally inspired - they were in the round under a star configuration of lights. It was magical.
That is the Word is Live version which I have. I quickly listened and I think the middle quiet section is not so good. But I will listen to it properly. I must confess I haven't got all the live versions and haven't systematically listened and compared all versions this can drive you a bit crazy in any case. There is a version on Keys to Ascension, and a version from another date from the Union live tour on the CD and various post 2000 live versions. I have seen discussion somewhere identifying the Union version is very special and when I listen I see what they mean, with regard to the middle quiet section. This post has generated a lot of interest which is nice. And not many will have my version because it's from a bootleg CD Round the World in 80 dates.
