A short time after each film left the theater, there was a TV special about "the making of". The Empire Strikes Back is the absolute pinnacle of the Star Wars Franchise, it had great production values kudos to Irvin Kershner and Gary Kurtz, and The Empire Strikes Back had one of the best endings in cinema history. The Empire Strikes Back had a brilliant ending scene with Luke, Leia, C-3PO, and R2-D2, this was the big film that came out a year after Alien with Sigourney Weaver and Rocky II with Sylvester Stallone in May 1980, and I also love both Alien and Rocky II as my absolute favorites of 1979. Facts. The original is much better, and Lucas should have put it back in. This is the beginning of the Special Editions. I wondered why there is to many shots. I thought they were showing off the effects. Was he trying to ruin Kershner's work??? I think this is why nobody wanted to work with him after 1980. He had a hard time finding a director for RothJ.
The AT-AT and Hoth battle is overlong, dull, silly, and kind of a mess and pretty pointless. I wonder who was responsible. It's the worst part of the OT, including the Ewoks, and a toy commercial like RothJ and the prequels. The rest of Empire is awesome.
(Maybe Lucas should have had them rescue Han from Fett quickly in part 3 and did something with Han's (and maybe Lando's) background in the Transport Guild which was set up in the draft for Empire.)

Lucas was concerned that people might have that misinterpretation UNTIL the window shot showed the Falcon leaving, potentially leading to a "What is going on" moment among the less attentive audience members. Still remember walking out of the theater in 1980 as a shaken 8 year old boy. Lol There were very few spoilers back then so you had no idea what you were walking into. I’ll be honest, Empire was my least favorite of the Original Trilogy as a kid. Then when they started playing the Trilogy back to back to back in the early 90’s on USA Network, I was old enough to understand the themes of Empire and saw it as the middle story.

@@ciscodeer9094 As Junkman has already emphasized, The original edit of the ending has never appeared on any home video release and was only seen by those who saw the film in it's initial 70mm limited release. In fact, It is so rarely seen that until relatively recently, like within the last 10 years or so, It wasn't even widely known that the ending was ever altered. It took actual fan research and studying of various print sources as well as in theater audio recordings to actually find this out.
The 1995 Faces VHS and the 1997 SE VHS have the same ending that every other video release has. I have them both on my shelf and have played them several times recently.

I saw the original 70mm release on the day it opened. I think Lucas was overreacting. It was very clear what was going on. But then, we are talking about the guy who ruined his own films when he digitally "enhanced" them in the 1990s.

Something like this happened to me after filming a short film “Zombie Resurrection.” I realized I needed a transition in a couple of places to fill the holes and had to call the actors back for a few more shots for to make sense. I’m so glad we did this because it made a huge difference.

I was attending Georgia Tech (Atlanta) when Empire was released. I skipped classes the day it opened to stand in line to see the limited release 70mm with friends. Our spots in line just missed the first show, but got to see the second. Great memory. I wasn't confused by the ending at all.

One of my regrets, not a deep one as I was too young to care, was never seeing Empire when it first released... I finally saw Empire just before the Special Editions were released... Yeah! I saw JEDI before Empire!!!
Watching these two scenes back to back... Or Simultaneous ... Such a small change - Personally, As a kid when the movie released, I don't think I would have noticed the issue... But George Lucas knew what he was looking for and if he felt it was wrong - It was wrong!
That being said, I do feel the Common Ending has more weight and power... It was a good decision by Lucas! But truth be told... There is very little difference overall!

Not much of a difference but it says much about the 1980 era George Lucas. You think he would have done this in the 90s? No way. Gary Kurtz said he changed after Empire and wasn't as quality minded (my words) as he was before.
