I don't think I connected emotionally with any character/story as much as when Arrow pointed out that Kara changed her costume to look more like Clark's. Kara's emotional experience was just so evocative and I don't know why but it hit me.

I personally also love Kara's story within Injustice. Having her be the second chance for Earth to have an all powerful savior, one that can see where she can fall to and refuses to. Plus having her be the further push of a new younger Justice League with Blue Beattle and Firestorm to round her out.
I’ve always had a soft spot for supergirl as a character, and how tragic her character is once you look more into her

She's not really tragic, when she's depicted correctly she's a character defined by her happiness and selflessness. Even in the hellscape that became Argo City, Kara still thought of it as a happy childhood.
She's never been a character defined by her trauma, or at least she shouldn't. Even if she's had very rough moments she tries to see the good side in everything, not as a coping mechanism or any of that but because she's genuinely that kind of person.
I always hate when they leave Super-Girl in the future, I honestly like her character in the present to live with the modern day heroes, and develop a family bond with Clark- that was one thing I liked about the Legion of Superheroes animated film- was the idea at the end was she stayed in the future but could return to the past when’re she wants☺️
Exactly. Plus ‘love at first sight’ is so stupid. She barely knows anything about her love interest other than ‘superhero’ and ‘good with technology’.
I kinda wish JLU did something similar, where Kara had some way of going back to the present whenever she wanted.

One of my favourite comics is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King. It made really appreciate her as a character and that she isn't just a female superman. In many ways her backstory is much more tragic than clark. So much sadness and anger inside of her but everyday she still chooses to have a heart of gold. Highly recommended for anyone to read it.

@@Souro0510Fair point, I would've been inclined to agree when I first read it. But I think since Kara is so op, her real enemy is herself and her anger, which she fights back through restraint. The space pirates and the pathetic man doesn't stand a chance. These monsters have comitted genocide on hundreds of worlds. Millions of families killed. Too many loved ones taken away. Supergirl had every right to kill them. They reminded her of the terror her own species went through, an extinction. By our standards they would've been executed immediately. But Supergirl does not. Thats whats makes her a superhero. If thats not a climactic battle I dunno what is.
This is obviously over a year late, but I fully agree on how good Woman of Tomorrow is. I’m so hyped Gunn’s Supergirl movie is a straight up adaptation.
On the top, I cannot believe that you left out Superman Unbound. The entire plot of that story revolves around Kara's PTSD from Brainiac's invasion.
To understand Superman, Supergirl, Krypton and the mythology of DC, one must understand the Hebrew word גלות. Which roughly translates to "exile" or "scattering". Kryptonians are a people who have lost their home, their culture, their traditions, their temples, their music, it was all burned away in a nuclear holocaust.
For Clark, the Corn-fed Kansas farmboy, the visceral nature of the pain is not as acute as it is for the teenage Kara who grew up as a Kryptonian among Kryptonians only to witness the death of her whole world.
The one thing DC seems to do is skip over Kara's grief form losing her parents, her friends, her home, her planet, her people. Like how would a person deal with that kind of lost?... People grief for days just losing a love one, even moths. She lost a whole entire planet. DC likes to just skips over her grief in a few minutes and makes her go about her days like nothing has happened. Which is really a shame. It doesn't show how emotionally strong she is. She lost everything over night and is still trying to hold on to life and smile. She wakes up every day to a nightmare. For her, it's a nightmare. Think about waking up to an unknown place with unknown people and always be reminded of what you have lost. It will feel like you're in a nightmare that you can't wake up from. And she just has to learn to deal with it. In the comes, Superman doesn't help her with her grief. He does check up on her once in a while but that's to see how she's adapting to life on Earth. He doesn't comfort her and help her through the emotion of losing an entire planet, no one does. That's why even thought CW Supergirl suck, I'm kind of glad they gave her a sister to help her deal with her grief of losing her entire planet even thought that part of the story was skipped over. There are some people who commit suicided over just spelled milk. The fact that she's still going strong after losing so much just shows how strong she really is.

I honestly hated how they just wrote her out of the show. I was actually starting to really like the character.

I think of the Big three the one who Kara needs the most is Batman. Because they have the most in common.
Both were children when their world was ripped away from them.
Both had very few people they could rely on and felt alienated from those who were there after.
Both also end up with the power and potential to do nearly anything. Obviously Bats with his cash and resources and Kara with her powers.
Someone like Batman would be the best kind of mentor for her as a primary care giver between alfred and him.
I'm also not talking making her robin/batgirl or supergirl.
Just Kara Zor El and have Bats be the one kick starting her new life. Have the Kents involved 100% but Kara after what happened will be bitter, will be vengeful and wrathful.
But like in Batman TAS with what happened to Dick and how Batman and Alfred looked after Dick is something Kara would also need.
Shes a girl out of time and space. Bats knows that feeling that rejction like in this example with Brainiac, but Kara can also learn like how Dick did in TAS that so much of Batman is self inflicted and how not to let that happen to her.
When you put it like that, a Supergirl/Batman focused episode/movie actually sounds great if done right.
I don't think bruce is at her level, I mean yeah what happened to the waynes is a tragedy but is not the same that to lose your entire planet, personally i would change batman for nightwing Who is batman with way, way more people skills

I know it's a little shallow, but I'm a fan of Lauren Faust's version of Supergirl from DC Superhero girls. We don't get a deep story, but her personality and voice are nifty.
The series is very good at turning these characters around in their hand and seeing what different angles you can get on them.
Kara is underated
I loved the Supergirl x Brainiac 5 relationship when I first saw it on JLU when I was little. I was so happy when they dug deeper into their dynamic and romance in the 2023 movie. It was developed further and made me root for them even more.
I really want to read the comics where they’re together, but I don’t know where to start.
I love the Superman Batman Apocalypse movie because I read the comic book it's mostly based on. The comic is better at developing the characters because it has personalized thought boxes for each of them. Everyone's emotions and intentions are written out for all to see. It wasn't transferred as well into movie format but they go nicely together because of the movie's amazing fight scenes. Especially Wonder Woman and Big Barda vs. the Furries which is basically my favorite Wonder Woman fight ever
The JLA episode was a shock to me as a kid because I never expected for Kara to stay in the future
I really want a supergirl animated series, hopefully one with her original costume ( The Justice league Unlimited) one.
There is a live action one. It isn't animated but it does exist.
Apocalypse is based on the comic where pretty much the same thing unfolds. The movie's issues are a result of not expanding on the comic's story.
One thing the movie did much better was have her fight Darkseid, instead of just teleporting her away for Superman to fight him.
@@SourRobo8364 Yeah, I actually was pretty impressed with how hard that fight went. Sure, it was ultimately superman who still put him away, but it was a real slugfest that really had her fighting for her own destiny. Which was a change from being passed pillar to post as a obligation, but also showed that she had learnt from her experiences; certainly fighting like an amazon. Suplexing Darkseid into his own omega beams was satisfying!
Even in her introduction, Clark kept her pretty firmly at arms length in the old comics, putting her up in a orphanage to be adopted. So I guess whenever her status quo is reset, she always has to go through that stage.
I'm excited for how James Gunn handles Kara. She's so different from Clark and deserves more people to understand how much is going on behind her "Superman but a girl" appearance.

the title for superman/ batman apocalypse doesn't include wonder woman and supergirl because its a direct adaption of a story arc from the 2000s comic superman/batman.
I've always liked supergirl, just never really got the depth of the character, but this video helped alot, with seeing all her appearances and arcs. Im excited to see what Gunn does with the movie
I really like supergirl but I feel like I like her more for her potential rather than how she is portrayed. Like the idea of a character remembering krypton is so fascinating and she is our gateway into that world that can be explored through her missing her home

Into the Kara-Verse
I definitely enjoyed Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl in justice league unlimited, Superman Batman Apocalypse, and the legion of superheroes movie. I think these different stories featuring Supergirl do a good job developing the character, even if it was done in different ways. For the record, Superman Batman Apocalypse is based on a Supergirl storyline in the comics that was never fully adapted into animation, which is why it feels incomplete in the animated movie.
This video remind me of the contrast in the relationship between Supergirl and Green Arrow in the Timmverse and the Arrowverse.
In JLU Ollie is Kara's best friend inside the league, despite or maybe because he's the most human. In the CW versions Oliver Queen takes the role of the suspicious one that Batman has in Apocalypse and Legion. Also Supergirl shows to be disgusted by the fact that Overgirl is married to the Fürer.
A good Supergirl story would be her relating to a struggling female military cadet in the middle of a big incursion scenario!

I'm probably alone in this, but as much as I like Kara, I really wish they had done more with Matrix/Linda Danvers Supergirl from the 90's or at least not destroyed her character right after giving her series a reasonably satisfying if sad ending. Basically, I wish the "Reign in Hell" storyline had just left her alone. I get that the new folks at DC preferred Kara, but you don't have to do the replacement dirty to bring back the original. She was Supergirl when I first started reading comics.

The JLAS definitely did her character best, though I wished they did more.
Really disliked the JLU "I'm running away cause boy and I'm not special enough here, kthanxbai" end for Supergirl, and I have yet to make it past the first 30min of the Legion of Superheroes movie -it's a bit too 'CW teen soap/drama' for my liking.

I remember when the Legion of Superheroes cartoon came out, I spent the entire series waiting for Supergirl to show up. Man, was I disappointed.
She was actually planned to be the main character, but the executives said to use Superman instead because they thought boys wouldn’t want to watch a show with a female lead.

Apocalypse has some of the best spectacle of all of the animated DC movies. But, yes the story doesn't match up with a lot of the other movies.

Funny you should mention the title, “Apocalypse”. In the comic storyline it was just “Superman/Batman: Supergirl” which probably isn’t a better title than “Apocalypse”. Also, the cover of the dvd, you wouldn’t know it was about Supergirl. And you nailed it, even though I really liked this movie, it wasn’t Supergirl’s movie, she was just in it. At least she had a big fight scene with Darkseid, unlike the comic where she had even less to do.
I don’t like Legion of Superheroes as much as Apocalypse but I love Kara more in that movie. These DCUA movies are frustrating in that I wish they had done more with all the other characters not named Batman or Superman 😔

I loved legion of superheroes and the animation style in it not as much as the style of apocalypse dark but it's competent none the less and I find it really nice and not Intimidating, the movie actually made me cry hoping for someone like her to believe me maybe I'm getting overly emotional over an animated movie but it was nice

So, this is the small screen version of everyone's opinion of Kara if this was people reading the comic book version around '96 basically?
What DC Comics and DC Animation forget and I think on purpose. And against the interest of the Superman IP is that Kara would have been satisfied with visiting the Fortress of Solitude whenever 21st century Earth felt too backward or whenever she needed to reconnect with her recent past. The Fortress is an exact replica of Krypton - using Kryptonian technology - designed by the Jor-El and likely his brother Zor-El too. And Jimmy Olsen is a better fit as Kara's boyfriend and better serves the overall story that centers on Kal.
I couldn't imagine how would it be to be Supergirl. Imagine you are one of 10 people who survived the death of you planet and people and you live in a totally different world with less advanced technology. How could someone adapt to that?

It's kind of funny to think as a DC guy, I'd prefer the MCU version of "Far From Home" over the JLU version, because that episode was the worst I'd ever seen of the series and I always skip it upon rewatching it all. What happened with Kara felt very forced to me and the rest was largely forgettable.

It's always made sense to me that Supergirl should be a somewhat angry character. Imagine you spend your whole youth living in New York City, where you never doubt you're going to continue to live and work in what you consider the greatest city on Earth, only to be rushed into a airplane with nothing but the clothes on your back, and as you look back at the city shrinking on the horizon, you see the whole damn thing go up in a mushroom cloud. You're then dropped off in a village in a third world country, where the closest thing you have to a friend is someone claiming to be your cousin, who speaks English like a tourist.

Superman Batman Apocalypse is not a Supergirl origin story, it's a Superman and Batman story that introduces Supergirl. The movie isn't from her perspective because the comic it comes from isn't either. If they wanted it to be an origin, they would've completely rewritten the story the way the Legion of Superheroes movie does.

In most versions, it’s not a direct clone of Brainiac. There’s an entire planet, and he’s just like a sibling of the original Brainiac, even though the lingo used is often still clone, or upgrade.
In some versions Brainiac is made the computer that ran Krypton, then allows/causes it’s destruction, taking Kandor as his first piece in the collection.
Have you ever checked out the Legion of Superheroes series, with Imperiex, and young Superman being brought to help them? It’s not near JLU or Young Justice quality, but it has some cool episodes, snd the Fatal Five are pretty nasty.
