The relationship between heroes and villains in YJ is pretty interesting imo. They fight each other of course but they’re not allowed to kill each other, at least not without consequence. Sometimes they seem almost like two rival sports teams rather than super cops and criminals.
The most fun part is they are literally fighting each other and Conner says he's engaged and icicle jr's response is to be happy and congratulate even though they are fighting each other. That's friendship
I'll admit, when I watched the early episodes as a child, I just thought Superboy was the coolest. Now, looking back, I see just how strong of a character he actually is!
He may not have invented the phrase, but Kalder telling Conner “Ask yourself this: what would Superman do?” Is such a good line. Genuinely helps to define him and is also just a really good guiding point for anyone in general.
I will say, best character storyline in Young Justice is Icicle Jr. He is still a criminal but he sees the team as his friends and even is able to celebrate SB and MM's wedding with them. Sure, he is in cuffs but you have heroes and their families there and he is just one of them. All because he saw them as friends when he got to know them.
No for real though. The invitation is COSTUME Optional. Everyone at that wedding is vetted to be on the up and up to keep the atmosphere comfortable enough that everyone is allowed to be themselves. Icicle Jr. in attendance really shows how much they trust their friendship even if he's a criminal (like part of me gets it's a gag but even then that's a huge gesture).
It felt very forced, which was the point. Other people were trying to define their relationship. Clark was understandably uncomfortable with it, but his poor treatment of Conner blinded viewers from this. Conner barely knew anything, so he went along with it. I'm glad they both came to a different conclusion together.
That's interesting. I'm on the opposite end of that, tbh. Clark seeing Connor as a "sibling" is what felt weird and forced to me. Perspective is a funny thing, I guess. Totally respect your take, though.
@@ChristopherStLouis-xl1hkyeah weirdly enough this feels a bit like Star Wars, where 25-year-old Obi-wan basically raised 9-year-old Anakin into adulthood and somehow saw Anakin as his brother??? Maybe the point could be that Clark & Conner never quite got on the same page _at the same time_ about how they saw each other -- kinda drifting between fraternal/paternal but at different points in their relationship? Idk
I really liked Superboy. I knew about him before, but never got to know the character and his struggles. Him not being accepted by Superman and seen as a mistake is such a gut punch because Clark is supposed to be 'the World's greatest Hero". However, him rejecting him and acting like a jerk let others see his flaws and wonder what's wrong with him. Lex being the controlling parent and acting like Connor belongs to him is a toxic relationship that Connor doesn't want any part of.
He felt like a burden and not up to the task when Clark wasn’t around, yet he inspired the next generation of heroes in the future by embracing his own importance and identity. It’s great.
Superboy is probably my favourite character in this show. Seeing him come to terms with who he is as a person, learn to accept his anger and not let it control him, learn to trust and love his friends and himself. Seeing turn from the angry teenager in the first season into the person from the later seasons is suchh amazing character growth
I am so happy you decided to go back to doing Connor, he was my reason for falling in love with the superman family all over again, and now they've been my favorites for so long
I grew apart from the mythos of Superman/Clark Kent a long time ago, and was very surprised to find so much depth in Superboy/Connor. His character is very relatable, and his development also has a similar connection to Smallville's Clark Kent (my modern favorite iteration).
He is one of my favorite characters in fiction, is literally my reason for liking superheros in general. I would always remember been 7 and watching this series becoming completely obsessed with him.
The day that Conner outed himself and Lex ends up being very important than you’d expect. Phantoms revealed that Lor-Zod almost assassinated Conner on that day and the Legion of Super Heroes had to interfere. Also, it indirectly leads to the creation of this world’s Metallo, who is reinvented as a dark foil to Conner.
How do I put this? In Young Justice, it’s a far more impressive feat that Connor truly becomes Superboy than it is that Clark ever became Superman. Similar to how in the comics, it’s actually a more impressive feat that Damian became the Robin that he is today than say, Dick especially, who prior to his parents death had a sort of idyllic, magical childhood filled with the wonder and strangeness and mystery of the circus. So of course he becomes a good guy who fights for good. Jon Kent in the comics phrases it best when (I think) one of the Flash kids criticizes Damian’s abrasive attitude or demeanor. He says something to the extent of, “Listen. You don’t understand how huge of a deal it is for him to be here, fighting for good, at all, and he’s the best person I know. He was trained from birth to inherit an evil empire that wants to destroy the world’s human population. He was raised to be a world-dominating assassin, and instead he’s here, with you and me, on this mission to save someone. That’s so much more of an accomplishment than it is for you or me to be here doing what we’re doing. Damian had to reject basically pure evil, and then work his way all the back from those sins to where he is now. So yeah, he’s kind of grumpy a lot of the time.” Or something like that. And it’s the best defense of Damian I’ve seen from a really compassionate (and admittedly biased) perspective of his best friend who actually watched a lot of that growth and went through it with him. (Frick yeah Super Sons). And that’s how Superboy’s feat in Young Justice of simply being the amazing dude he becomes is so much more impressive than Superman being Superman.
Not a patron, so I'm out of the loop, but I hope you are well, Leo! If not, I hope you will be well soon. Thanks for all the wonderful insight that you share with us!
I cannot describe actually how much I love your videos. Each and every one oozes with creativity, passion, and hard work. Watching your videos fill me with hope for what the future might be and give me the confidence and determination to be the best person I can be. The way you break down characters and make sure that we understand who they really shows me how good of a person I could be. Not through super human feats but by helping others in any way I can. Thank you so much for making these videos.
I thought they'd give Tactile Telekinesis like his comic version which is strong enough to let him fly and and carry an entire city but I do understand it would make way too strong for the series
I was really expecting Phantoms to give him flight. First he and M'gan danced in the air, then he spent the entire season in a place where your movement is based on thought. It seemed like such a perfect setup
Like always, your videos really hit it at the center.l Conner started the story off as one of the three who had the big issues of the team, But after overcoming those issues, he became the very soul of not just the team but the superhero community, and in season four, phantoms after he's presumed dead we see how much of a devastating blow it dose to that very community. Connor wasn't just a part of his community he was the center of it.
I've been binging these and am just sort of the verge of tears from how well written and how well you explain all these beautiful and touching themes, and then I get up to make dinner and glance at the screen for a moment (all while trying not to cry) and theres just BORN SEXY on the screen. Now I'm crying from laughing so hard, well done, I love your videos so much, they're fantastic.
Like i said in Megan's video... Connor journey is beautiful, it is a journey of discovery in a world he was brought into by the perverting of the most basic human right. And he came to learn that the best way to actualize himself was to give from himself, even that is so little, but he still did and what wasgiven back to him made him a better man.
Was never a huge fan of the YJ Superboy after being attatched to the 90s version for so long. I can appreciate that fans of YJ and this version of Conner have someone so fleshed out and enjoyable to them.
Finally, someone who sees that M'gan and Conor getting together again makes sense, because they changed. The M'gan he eventually married is a very different prrson from the one that erased his memories
Best character in the show bar none imo. I could never really get into comics Superboy but YJ Superboy is what kept me watching the show even when I stopped liking it after season 2.
I've been running through all your recent videos because the algorithm hadn't shown me them before. But I love the Young Justice series you've been doing you have a lot of great takes on the characters and really break down why they're all so great
Nice retrospective look at Young Justice's Superboy, the first animated version of the character. Conner Kent aka Kon-El aka Superboy is my favorite member of the team because of the qualities he has in common with Superman, the qualities he has that are his own, his powers which makes him arguably the strongest of the team, his relationship with Miss Martian for better or worse, and his character arc throughout the series so far. Hopefully there will be another young justice season for more from his character. I think my only nitpick is that Superboy takes Superman's role in the formation of the legion of superheroes, and it's only a minor nitpick.
Superboy was always my fave. Had anger, had quips but had a big heart and grew the most. Was devastated when I thought he died in s4😭 Thought they had taken another one from me Also, bringing Icicle Jr for the wedding was an absolute W😂
Connor's character also follows Erikson's stages of psychosocial development. As teenagers our primary struggle is with a sense of identity, as young adults in our 20s we then tackle intimacy and isolation as we explore more deep relstionships with partners yyes, but also friends and family, how our new sense of who we are interacts with them. Finally in the next stage which is supposed to be 30s to 40s but obviously is just a general guideline, we have generivity and stagnation, where now that we know who we our and who we want to be around, we tackle our involvement in the world and others, using what we developed to create or nurture something, be it kids or activism or just putting good vibes out in our community.

Its not a 1 to 1 comparison to the trans experience, but Superboy's storyline in YJ really resonated with me, especially before I realized my current gender identity.
I have been looking for your channel for a whole year because I forgot the name of the song, "Something That Was Changing Your Mind." Glad I found you again!
it angers me so much that I can only watch the first 2 seasons in germany, I sail the 7 seas to watch the rest of them but my Internet provider blocks VPN
Swiss here and same. I pirated the first two seasons back in the day because there was no other way to see them, rewatched them on Netflix and was pissed when they never went past season two and then just deleted the two seasons they had.
What annoyed me is that both in seasons 2 & 3, the team failed to communicate to Connor about going under cover to take down the Light and both times Connor did his part in showing support
The phantoms was just another long line of missed opportunities. Everyone changed except super boy. Him and Nightwing got robbed of a proper arcs. The last three seasons he's already gone through such growth. Going From a weapon, To being a hero in his own right. They really should have given superboy spiritual trials to unlock his full kryptonian powers. The idiot writers made one of many mistakes in The season. Connor does not identify as half Kryptonian he is half Kryptonian. Ain't no self identifying crap. They really should have just taken from Death of superman to Reign Of Superman, for his arc. But I guess doin, research is hard for "writers " these days writing superhero shows. I really don't know if young justice Will be renewed even though it's been a couple of years. And based on how season four was I hope they don't. If they do, then they better give Superboy the respect he's due
I feel that the Legionaries of the Legion Of Superheroes believe that the SuperBoy who inspired them was actually Jon Kent the Sun of SuperMan I think that Connor inspired to the SuperBoy that the Legion Of Superheroes believes that it was Connor and not Jonathan sorry if it got a little confusing when someone is reading this
I think within the show, its very clear that Connor was the direct inspiration for the legion of superheroes. He is after all a main character of the show and the focus of the season. Why would they have put so much significance on a cameo character of Jon. I don't think the said anything to indicate that Jon was their inspiration.
this show did something truly amazing for conner, he used to be kind of a joke to a lot of people, but the reinvention of him for YJ forever changed his image
You should do one of these essays on Atom Eve. I just watched the prequel episode they dropped for her origin and that was some of the most beautiful shit I’ve seen in a long time
I know it's a reach but considering Greg Weisman's work on both shows, I can't help but notice the parrales between Superboy in YJ and Thailog in Gargoyles. Thailog was less emotive and more calculating, but ultimately couldn't escape either of his "father's" image. Dude went as far of creating a clone mate based on BOTH of Goliath's love interests. As far as the show went at least Thailog could never become his own person and that led to his unhappiness. In comparison Superboy spent the first season wanting to become Superman and drifting into Lex's path, but was ultimately saved by friends who saw him as his own unique person. It's one reason why the younger brother relationship with Clark from season 2 on is great. Despite being a clone of Clark and Lex, Connor becomes his own person and is better for it.
Not everyone is so lucky. I'm past my 20s and community did nothing but hurt me. Tbh it's the opposite, the older I get, the more I like being away from people
But I still think their romance is disturbing and strange. Her real body too Alien both Kryptonian and human. Are Martians even compatible? And in the end, this is quite dishonest if she have to keep her shape constantly. Love without erotic is possible, but that's not love for a couple. One can love his mentor, father figure, master etc. I can understand Connor seeing Megan human form as hot, because it is hot, but it's not her true self.
I mean I love Superboy I just hate his relationship with Miss Martian that felt so force because of the fact that she's telepathic and I'm kind of upset that they never gave him the jerky you know free care preteen before he grows into the mature young man that we see today and I didn't like how for a lot of Young Justice the development between him and Superman was off screen and him treating him like a brother instead of a son which that's what he should do just like how Batman treats his Robin's like sons even though he doesn't want to admit He cares for them sometimes Superman should have been doing that instead of treating him like a offshoot brother and that's a mistake and a failure of the writers with both Ms Martian relationship that been forced especially once she betrayed him they should have broke up and they should have went with his traditional relationship his true love which is Cassie Sandsmark Wonder Girl but I do like to development the day gave him It's just that a lot of the development sometimes is was off screen especially between characters that I wanted to see.
Subscribed for more Young Justice content. Was also thinking if we could do Anti-villains like Cheshire Cat (Jade Nguyen) after Tigress (Artemis Crock)
I was worried that you had dissapeared, I was hoping that you were enjoying and went on vacation or something like that, I'm sorry it wasn't the case, man
My only problem with Conner in this show as someone who knows him from comics is how they made him the tough guy with anger issues as if he needed to be. Conner in comics is basically the exact opposite. More light, free, happy, positive, fun loving. Never been a huge fan of him here.
Agreed for the same reasons. Also, if I'm remembering right (and I might be getting it wrong because it's been years since I've read the original Superboy comics) even Conner's relationship with Clark is the complete opposite in the comics. I remember Clark wanting to have a relationship with Conner and embrace him as family, but Conner wanted to do his own thing in Hawaii. Clark's rejection of him in the show never felt right to me.
JOHN 3:16 FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD, THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, THAT WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH, BUT HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE.

And based on how season four was I hope they don't. If they do, then they better give Superboy the respect he's due
your videos are always top notch!
He seems more like a Chad than a Connor
I feel that the Legionaries of the Legion Of Superheroes believe that the SuperBoy who inspired them was actually Jon Kent the Sun of SuperMan I think that Connor inspired to the SuperBoy that the Legion Of Superheroes believes that it was Connor and not Jonathan sorry if it got a little confusing when someone is reading this
I think within the show, its very clear that Connor was the direct inspiration for the legion of superheroes. He is after all a main character of the show and the focus of the season. Why would they have put so much significance on a cameo character of Jon. I don't think the said anything to indicate that Jon was their inspiration.
this show did something truly amazing for conner, he used to be kind of a joke to a lot of people, but the reinvention of him for YJ forever changed his image
well said
I have always wanted to see super boy in the movies and I can't wait until NDCU and I like how it's not pase it's a chapter chapter 1 God and monsters
Love you, Leo.
Keep safe.
I loved this character in season 1
You should do one of these essays on Atom Eve. I just watched the prequel episode they dropped for her origin and that was some of the most beautiful shit I’ve seen in a long time
6:20 too bad we never actually see how their relationship actually went to crap or for the better (in case of superman)
Tbh it's the opposite, the older I get, the more I like being away from people
"and then he dies"

But I still think their romance is disturbing and strange. Her real body too Alien both Kryptonian and human. Are Martians even compatible? And in the end, this is quite dishonest if she have to keep her shape constantly. Love without erotic is possible, but that's not love for a couple. One can love his mentor, father figure, master etc. I can understand Connor seeing Megan human form as hot, because it is hot, but it's not her true self.
You’re not a real boy you’re a weapon and you belong to the Dominion!
That's how relationship works and how weird would it be if your brother called you son and treated you like one
I’m not crying. You’re crying. 🥹
Oh god seeing the season 3&4 art side by side with the S1&2 art is painful
We need more Young Justice
Fantastic video cant think of anything to criticize WAIT THE END MUSIC IS DIFFERENT RIOT
INVINCIBLE 2 AHHHHH!!!
Subscribed for more Young Justice content.
Was also thinking if we could do Anti-villains like Cheshire Cat (Jade Nguyen) after Tigress (Artemis Crock)
I was worried that you had dissapeared, I was hoping that you were enjoying and went on vacation or something like that,
I'm sorry it wasn't the case, man
the one thing thats i think the scariest thing in dc is when female martians gets of age
when they do, get away
The best youtuber
I’ve wonder why lex and Superman appeared normal while Wally didn’t
I felt bad for Lagoon Boy cause i knew they were gonna do him dirty the moment he started dating Miss Martian
Dude you use the D word alot this episode and i love it
Love the breakdown. Can u do Oliver Queen from arrow. I feel like he has the best character arc/story
