Because of his super busy schedule and because of some issues between the Chinese and Korean government, Lay has not been a part of EXO activities for more than 4 years now, other than his cameo appearance in. EXO's "Tempo" MV and his brief vocal part in the Mandarin version of "Tempo" MV and song. His hiatus from EXO is not something he has chosen, but it's something that has sort of been forced upon him by the government. Now I am nowhere near an expert on the topic, and I admit that I only understand a very minor part of what is going on between the Chinese and Korean government, but as I understand it, part of the reason for the ban on Chinese and Korean workers between the two countries is that China refused to align itself with the U.S. or South Korea to protect themselves with deployment of the THAAD missile defense system in South Korea. North Korea and China wanted to get rid of the rocket system that is meant to shoot down a nuclear missile if North Korea were to launch one at South Korea or the U.S. Another reason why China doesn't like the THAAD system is because China and the U.S. don't have the best relationship, so if the U.S. and China become on even worse terms China is afraid the U.S. could also use THAAD against them. China said the THAAD system is just provoking them to actually start a nuclear war, and until they remove it or at least move it back from the South Korean boarder, they would continue their ban on Korean products, workers and the Hallyu wave from working in China and for its native Chinese citizens from working with Korean companies. China feels like the Korean government is taking away its native commodities by allowing Chinese people to work in Korea. The issue is even more complicated than this, but that is one part of it. And then with the more recent conflict with the Chinese government and Hong Kong, more political tension made it difficult for our Chinese Idols to work with their Korean companies and groups. With many Chinese Idols coming out in support of the Chinese government and publicly supporting "One China," it made it even more difficult for Lay to work with EXO. With Lay's deep ties to the Chinese government and with the fact that he is one of the most popular celebrities in China right now, he can't afford to be blacklisted by the Chinese government. He needs to be able to work and live in China as freely as possible. So, regardless of how he might feel politically on a personal level, he has to come out in support of the Chinese government publicly, which puts him at odds with many other countries views on the subject. With pressure from the Chinese government, it may have been difficult for him to stay neutral, or at least not make his opinion public, so unfortunately for a short time he also received some backlash from people outside of mainland China. However, this doesn't always explain why some Chinese idols have been able to get around China's rules and have been able to continue working with their Kpop groups without any backlash But all I can guess is these idols don't have any connection to mainland China. If they are from somewhere else in China such as Hong Kong or a Chinese adjacent country such as Taiwan, etc. or if they are citizens of other countries, such as Thailand or Germany, the rule doesn't apply to them. All i can guess is these idols have some sort of loophole, such as they don't have any family living in mainland China, which allowed them to avoid the regulations. When China first began cracking down on their citizens working in Korea there were rumors that the Chinese government was threatening to revoke the citizenship of any mainland native Chinese person who continued to do business with a Korean company and lived outside of China. This rule would have prevented Idols, such as Lay, from visiting family and doing business in China, etc. The only way for them to avoid this from happening was for them to come back to China right away and stop doing business with their Korean companies. I don't know if this was really true or if it was just a rumor, but that is what I heard. Which would explain why some Chinese Idols don't feel any pressure to stop working in Korea because they have nothing to lose if they don't have a life in China. However, in the last few months, the tensions between China and Korea have started to let up and the Chinese government has rescinded its ban on China and Korea working together, so we are starting to see our Chinese idols working in Korea again. For example, Lay has recently been talking more about EXO on Chinese programs and WayV, NCT's Chinese sub-unit has actually been appearing on Korean variety shows and doing activities in Korea. Before this WayV, as a group, was not allowed to be associated with anything to do with Korea if they wanted to be allowed to promote in China. However, WayV even released a Korean version of their song, "Turn Back Time," which is a first for them. Also, after almost 6 years, we have seen Zhoumi, one of Super Junior's Chinese members actually back in Korea working alongside his Korean Super Junior members and he has released a song, "Starry Night" with one of his Korean members and the song has both a Chinese and Korean version. So I take all this as a good sign, and we can only hope that when Lay's schedule becomes less busy that we might get to see him working with EXO again. However, now the EXO members are all starting to go off to serve their military obligations, which has caused the main group of EXO to go on hiatus for a while, so it's hard to say when all the stars will align and allow Lay to promote with EXO once again. We will just have to wait and see. :D But no matter what, Lay always makes sure to find a way to show fans that he is, and will always be, a member of EXO -- he is always supporting his EXO brothers even from afar. You heard Lay listening to his song "Give Me a Chance" on his headphones at the beginning of the "Honey" MV and that is one of his songs and MVs from his Namanana album. When it comes to EXO, one thing you have to keep in mind is that absolutely everything they are involved in is connected to their concept and storyline, including a majority of the members' solo work. So, the story in Lay's "Honey" MV is just another piece of EXO's story. To explain the story in "Honey," some fan theories say that the fact that the weather lady on the TV is talking about the changing weather and the pressure system could be a nod to the unsettled conditions within EXO's current storyline and how currently the members are struggling to distance themselves from the Red Force, etc. And because you hear her speaking with a British accent this might be a clue to tell us where Lay is right now within EXO's storyline, and it might explain why the other EXO members seem to be sending him messages -- as we see with the bee and the blackout, etc. If you follow EXO's storyline than you know that they are supposed to be aliens from Planet Exo, who came to Earth to find and protect the Tree of Life from the evil Red Force. All the members of EXO have superpowers and they are on a mission to protect humanity from the evil and corruption caused by the Red Force. Most of EXO's powers have weather and nature elements that could be affected by and effecting the weather around the world. Some theories say, the mechanical bee has been sent by either one or more of the EXO members or it could be sent by the Red Force. The bee is either a message or a warning sent to Lay (although I am not fully confident as to what that exact message is.) And I think, the fact that the bee passes through the glass, might be Kai using his power of teleportation to allow it to pass through it -- or more like, transported to the other side of the glass. And then the lights in the entire city go out as if in a blackout, which I think might be Baekhyun using his power, which is the ability to control light, or Chen, who has the ability to control electricity. Plus, as Lay's power counterpart, it makes sense that Baekhyun would feel the pull to want to find Lay. Chen is a member of EXO-M along with Lay, so he would also have a heightened reason to want to find Lay. EXO needs Lay to help protect them and to heal all the things that are going on around them. And Kai's whole mission is to find the other EXO members and bring them back together to stop the Red Force. Also, I think it's interesting that Lay, as a member of EXO, has the power of healing, and honey is known for its natural homeopathic healing and medicinal properties. And in parts of the MV we see Lay submerged in a pool of honey, almost as if he might be using it to recharge and gain strength. I have no idea what this all means, but I just thought it was an interesting parallel. If you notice the part of the choreography where Lay is standing in the middle and the dancers are all round him as he spins around, I am pretty sure that is supposed to be depicting a flower as it blooms which is what is attracting the "bee" to him. :D On the flip side, the story in the song also is saying that Lay is a bee and he is looking for his "honey" that's why he is in a honeycomb/beehive or in a pool of honey the whole time. I think what he is saying in the lyrics is that "Be my honey and be available to me when I want you, but 'please don't catch no feelings' because you have to know that we can have fun together, but I can't invest all my time and energy into you the way I should if we were in a relationship." In other words, he is too busy and too popular to be exclusive right now. He needs to keep the girl at a safe distance for both of their emotional safety, etc. This also plays into the theory within EXO's storyline that the "girl" is a manifestation of the heart of the Tree of Life and that is why the members of EXO are always rescuing or protecting the girl, etc. And why all of EXO's songs are about being in love with a girl or being controlled by the power of the girl. Which could possibly explain the lyrics in "Honey" if you think of the girl as the heart, it might explain why Lay "wants her" but needs to keep her at a distance to protect her, etc. When you think of the girl as the heart of the Tree of Life, you begin to see even more parallels to EXO's story and even more ways to connect even more of it all together. Did you notice the spinning honeycomb in the middle of the MV? That spinning honeycomb is a nod to the fact even as a solo artist, he is still part of EXO. The hexagon is EXO's symbol and if you pay close attention at that spinning honeycomb you will see that it says EXO in the middle as it spins. So this is Lay's and SM's way of making sure that we never forget that he is part of EXO and that even if he isn't able to work with the group, he still makes sure to show just how important they are to him. As you can see, EXO's MVs are more complex than what you see on the surface. However, often -- although the stories in the MVs are loosely based on the lyrics -- many times the story in the MV and the lyrics in the song are two separate things. The lyrics don't necessarily always go with the story in the MV. Often EXO's songs are about being in love with a girl and wanting to be with her, but the story in the MV is about them working to complete their mission and to fight against the Red Force, etc. Everything EXO does has many layers and it has multiple means and messages, including any of the member's solo work. There are always two levels to every EXO song, one designed to grab the casual listener that has no idea about EXO's storyline, and one that, if you look deeper, you discover has hidden meanings and messages that all connects to EXO's mission here on Earth. For any of us that know EXO, and especially Lay, "Honey" is kind of exactly what we would expect from him.This is just the sexy, cool kind of song and amazing choreography that Lay is known for. All the guys want to be him and all the girls want to be with him. If you look at the credits for this album, Lay, once again wrote and composed and produced this song and the whole album himself, including the English lyrics.He even created the beats himself. When it came out I literally died in every scene, I mean i’ve seen him shirtless before many times but his vocals & dancing is what attracted me since day one with EXO. Most recently we were able to see Lay back together with the rest of EXO when Lay came to Korea to be there for the day that D.O. enlisted in the military. And in most of Lay's solo work we have nods to EXO and how the stories in his solo MVs are connected to EXO's storyline. He always works hard to remind everyone how important EXO and EXO-Ls are to him.
Lay is known as one of the hardest working artist in the industry because he is such a perfectionist and he pretty much does it all himself. When it comes to his solo work Lay is known for writing and composing the songs (including the rap sections), as well as producing them. he even creates all his own beats for his songs, and he takes a large part in coming up with the choreography and producing the MVs as well. Lay pretty much has a hand in all aspects of every part of every project, so that keeps him very busy.

"Honey" is another one of Lay's solo English songs and it's in English because it was a follow up to his previous album Namanana. (Namanana was Lay's 2018 U.S. debut album so all the songs on that album have an all English version.) You heard Lay listening to his song "Give Me a Chance" on his headphones at the beginning of the "Honey" MV and that is one of his songs and MVs from his Namanana album.
When it comes to EXO, one thing you have to keep in mind is that absolutely everything they are involved in is connected to their concept and storyline, including a majority of the members' solo work. So, the story in Lay's "Honey" MV is just another piece of EXO's story.
To explain the story in "Honey," some fan theories say that the fact that the weather lady on the TV is talking about the changing weather and the pressure system could be a nod to the unsettled conditions within EXO's current storyline and how currently the members are struggling to distance themselves from the Red Force, etc. And because you hear her speaking with a British accent this might be a clue to tell us where Lay is right now within EXO's storyline, and it might explain why the other EXO members seem to be sending him messages -- as we see with the bee and the blackout, etc.
If you follow EXO's storyline than you know that they are supposed to be aliens from Planet Exo, who came to Earth to find and protect the Tree of Life from the evil Red Force. All the members of EXO have superpowers and they are on a mission to protect humanity from the evil and corruption caused by the Red Force. Most of EXO's powers have weather and nature elements that could be affected by and effecting the weather around the world.
Some theories say, the mechanical bee has been sent by either one or more of the EXO members or it could be sent by the Red Force. The bee is either a message or a warning sent to Lay (although I am not fully confident as to what that exact message is.) And I think, the fact that the bee passes through the glass, might be Kai using his power of teleportation to allow it to pass through it -- or more like, transported to the other side of the glass. And then the lights in the entire city go out as if in a blackout, which I think might be Baekhyun using his power, which is the ability to control light, or Chen, who has the ability to control electricity. Plus, as Lay's power counterpart, it makes sense that Baekhyun would feel the pull to want to find Lay. Chen is a member of EXO-M along with Lay, so he would also have a heightened reason to want to find Lay. EXO needs Lay to help protect them and to heal all the things that are going on around them. And Kai's whole mission is to find the other EXO members and bring them back together to stop the Red Force.
Also, I think it's interesting that Lay, as a member of EXO, has the power of healing, and honey is known for its natural homeopathic healing and medicinal properties. And in parts of the MV we see Lay submerged in a pool of honey, almost as if he might be using it to recharge and gain strength. I have no idea what this all means, but I just thought it was an interesting parallel.
If you notice the part of the choreography where Lay is standing in the middle and the dancers are all round him as he spins around, I am pretty sure that is supposed to be depicting a flower as it blooms which is what is attracting the "bee" to him. :D
On the flip side, the story in the song also is saying that Lay is a bee and he is looking for his "honey" that's why he is in a honeycomb/beehive or in a pool of honey the whole time. I think what he is saying in the lyrics is that "Be my honey and be available to me when I want you, but 'please don't catch no feelings' because you have to know that we can have fun together, but I can't invest all my time and energy into you the way I should if we were in a relationship." In other words, he is too busy and too popular to be exclusive right now. He needs to keep the girl at a safe distance for both of their emotional safety, etc.
This also plays into the theory within EXO's storyline that the "girl" is a manifestation of the heart of the Tree of Life and that is why the members of EXO are always rescuing or protecting the girl, etc. And why all of EXO's songs are about being in love with a girl or being controlled by the power of the girl. Which could possibly explain the lyrics in "Honey" if you think of the girl as the heart, it might explain why Lay "wants her" but needs to keep her at a distance to protect her, etc. When you think of the girl as the heart of the Tree of Life, you begin to see even more parallels to EXO's story and even more ways to connect even more of it all together.
Did you notice the spinning honeycomb in the middle of the MV? That spinning honeycomb is a nod to the fact even as a solo artist, he is still part of EXO. The hexagon is EXO's symbol and if you pay close attention at that spinning honeycomb you will see that it says EXO in the middle as it spins. So this is Lay's and SM's way of making sure that we never forget that he is part of EXO and that even if he isn't able to work with the group, he still makes sure to show just how important they are to him.
As you can see, EXO's MVs are more complex than what you see on the surface. However, often -- although the stories in the MVs are loosely based on the lyrics -- many times the story in the MV and the lyrics in the song are two separate things. The lyrics don't necessarily always go with the story in the MV. Often EXO's songs are about being in love with a girl and wanting to be with her, but the story in the MV is about them working to complete their mission and to fight against the Red Force, etc. Everything EXO does has many layers and it has multiple means and messages, including any of the member's solo work. There are always two levels to every EXO song, one designed to grab the casual listener that has no idea about EXO's storyline, and one that, if you look deeper, you discover has hidden meanings and messages that all connects to EXO's mission here on Earth.
For any of us that know EXO, and especially Lay, "Honey" is kind of exactly what we would expect from him.This is just the sexy, cool kind of song and amazing choreography that Lay is known for. All the guys want to be him and all the girls want to be with him. If you look at the credits for this album, Lay, once again wrote and composed and produced this song and the whole album himself, including the English lyrics.He even created the beats himself. And he also helped choreograph and direct the MV, etc. When it comes to Lay's solo work he pretty much does it all himself. He has a hand in all aspects of his solo projects. And that is why he is known as China's national producer.
Lay is one of the top dancers in the industry and it's his solo work where he really gets to showcase what an amazing dancer he really is. He is the main dancer of EXO-M and he is the counterpart to Kai's role in EXO-K. Kai and Lay are both main dancers, lead vocalists and sub-rappers in their EXO units, so it's no surprise that Lay is an amazing dancer. That is why most of the time when you see solo dance breaks in EXO concerts you will see Lay and Kai dancing together because they are 2 of the top dancers in the industry and they were meant to fill similar roles in their respective sub-units in EXO.

When it came out I literally died in every scene, I mean i’ve seen him shirtless before many times but his vocals & dancing is what attracted me since day one with EXO. My boy became a King Bee 🐝, I personally don’t like rap or english versions of korean or chinese music but Lay does it so well even tho he is chinese; I do love his chinese version better. To be honest the english lyrics make the song just too westernized but Lay kills it. *He filmed the intro at a Grand Hotel in a very luxurious penthouse suite in Seoul, South Korea (city reflection in the window) where high-class people stay whenever they visit and our boy Yixing is one of those people especially in China. This is track is in all English but please don’t think inappropriately about the lyrics because that’s not what you think it is; I won’t lie the song itself is very cringy which gives others such a wrong idea what he’s saying when he says “I need a taste ... honey”.*
