B M.C. My guess is that it feels too much like LARPing. If they are going for historical accuracy... why the ring? If they are trying to advance the art of swordfighting, we have developed better armours and swords now, why the medieval...ness? But I'm gonna watch this anyways. Sports always baffled me, why create this roundabout system of establishing dominance with these arbitrary rules involving balls and goals? Why not just beat the fuck out of each other, that's definitive. Which is why fencing, kendo, MMA, kyokushin, boxing, muay thai, and this (apparently) are the only sports I can get into.
MobiusCoin Well, I reckon I might be able to explain sports. First, back to basics; that hot piece of ass only wants the best example of manliness to be her mate, because he has the strongest genes, which means that the children she bears have the best chance of survival and mating. But how will she know who's got the best genes? Well, fighting's an option, the best fighter's more than likely the fittest and thinks quickly on his feet - both are good traits for a hunter gatherer supporting a family, so the winner's the one she wants. But in a serious fight, the winner could be seriously injured, hampering his ability to provide for her and their children, so we need a non lethal competition. Hence sport. The roundabout rules let us see which group is fitter (and hence has generally better genes for this primitive society), and hence which ones the ladyfolk are better served pairing off with, whilst minimising the risk of debilitating injury. All this from an extremely underweight neckbeard who can't do sport for shit. I was always a brains over brawn kinda guy. I used to do cricket though, that was fun.
This needs to be the world's favourite sport. Forget football (any kind), baseball, tennis, cricket, hockey and all those others. M1 Medieval is a sport I would watch fanatically
This is the most stupidly rad thing I've ever seen in my life, I love it. It's great how the fighters going into the ring show on their faces they are totally aware of how goofy this idea is, but the people in their corners are dead serious.
EGarrett01 IRL they would use a sword of this size to stab/thrust at weak points, such as under the arms, around the neck and joints. No way knights would flail at each other with these, they're too small to even dent armour. They'd either wield a two-handed Claymore type weapon that can dent armour or as you mentioned they'd use a mace or hammer.
TG Morgan Actually sword was more of status symbol than a real weapon, especially huge claymore. During mass battles most used weapon was small axe or mid sized dagger so you can grab enemys armor, lift it up and stab under it. Sword was used in duels, tournaments and small intensity fights where you actually have space to wield it. Also it was more suited for cavalary than foot infrantry.
+David Chandra He IS wearing armour. Well, sort of. That red thing he's wearing is a gambeson. Historically, knights wear these under the mail and armour. Its pretty padded and can withstand slashes of a fully sharpened longsword full force.
+Shogun Seva And the weapons aren't sharp, either. Would still hurt and possibly cause serious injury to get hit by it without armor, but it wouldn't kill you. Plus no thrusting is allowed in the M-1 combat, so nobody would get "stabbed".
My god. Is this the greatest sport ever created? Also, excellent use of Judo in this fight; the style was created for use in armoured combat after all.
This is epic! I really hope this blows up like mma and end up really incorporating every form of hand weapon based combat. Imagine a samurai there, or someone with a warhammer, or sabers, etc.
Вай борцуха, вай братуха! XD Я сначала подумал, он его с лука херачить будет, на канат залезет и с ульты, а тот его сбить попытается, по ногам, вот это я понимаю средневековый бой...
Im a huuuuge MMA fan, and this should get right in the ranks! this is awesome and I could see some sick combowombo moves be thrown inn here with the propper training!! Make this viral enough and we will se a sword/kickboxing marshal art form spawning :D (sorry if my english is bad)
Wow this is awesome, this shines a small light on what the real warriors of the past would have faced. Scary to imagine what genuine sword fights would have been.
so the rules? seams to be if you take them down you're allowed a couple head strikes before they stand you back up... i assume that reflects negatively in the scoring for the guy on the receiving end?
The one guy doing the hip tosses was wrecking it! He's judo throwing his opponent to the ground, then he smashes his pommel into dude's helmet over and over. Epic.
Why is the guy with the round shield only half armored in the legs? Seems like the sort of thing you would't forget. Also the ref might want to wear some armor as well. And why did he call the fight so soon?
TheMegadethMonk He has armor on his upper legs, it's just padding instead of metal, which is lighter. As for the ref, I believe he has some padding as well.
It is very interesting to see, that judo throws are very effective. It shows why they are present in jujutsu for sure, meant to be used against a samurai in armor.
I feel that if the fighters were this armored, wouldn't it be more effective to fight with a heavy blunt weapon like a thick hammer or a large mace? One impact shockwave can penetrate the armor and seriously incapacitate
+H Lim Yeah it would be, and that's why they aren't using them. They can blunt the swords so that they're relatively safe, there's no way to make a mace or war hammer less deadly.
Everyone who does hema stop being offended, I do hema and i can appreciate this as a sport. Let them have some fun so what if its not historically accurate, yeah its a gimmick but so what it looks fucking fun as hell. I am a martial artist but I don't shit on Ufc or k1 just because I'm not allowed to use my groin kick or eye gouge technoques. Why the fuck would you want them to half sword and use spiked warhammers? You want them to die for a sport really? Chill. Out you're making hema practitioners look like uptight pricks, let them have some fun in armour for Christ's sake.
it's acually the first time i hear about this discipline, in witch countries is held most? is the fight in this video typical or are there weight categories, different equipement one can use etc etc?
The comments on this video are hilarious. Everyone getting all salty about the reality or lack thereof regarding this ENTERTAINMENT. I think this is great stuff. Whiners, try putting all that armor on yourself and take a few good thwacks to the helmet while trying to see through a metal slit and exhaust yourself trying to score points on the other fighter for nine minutes! It's a great test of endurance with some elements of actual medieval battles, the guys doing it are pretty damn serious (most of them are MMA fighters), and you can clearly see that they're giving their all. So what if they're not historically accurate? Beats WWE by a country mile.
i would say this is more realistic to anything we are shown in movies or game of thrones, apart from there being no sharp sowrds or stabbings allowed, the quickness and that feels insane like watching two knights go at it.
New York Knights Combat awesome Id like to try this sport sometime Ive done LARP for 20 years and have 30 pro kickboxing/MMA fights and 6 champion belts.
This could be a bit more popular if there were some more historical accuracy and technique. It appears to me as a back and forth clash of swords. Also I don't see much thrusting( or any as a matter of fact) which may be a rule of the sport, but on history was a staple in medieval martial arts. As stated in historical fighting manuals.
FrewghuArmory This is based on tournament rules, not the battlefield. And, as it happens, stabbing in tournaments was outlawed by the Pope due to injuries. I think that happened in the 11th or 12th Century.
The ref really should be wearing some form of plexi-glass visor.... Also they should put roundel into play so that when someone scores a take down they can end the fight with their dagger like a TKO in boxing or a submission in MMA. It would make the take down make more sense and allow for an excuse to let the men wrestle a bit more.
Are these armor pieces and weapons really same weight as they were in the medieval times? The fight seems so fast paced, and they swing that shit around like it's made out of plastic. Or are these guys just seriously strong? 0.o
+Sergei Voskoboynikov the medieval armor and weapons were not light. I have worn chainmail and it was not light (and i am a 140kg heavy, 1.95 meter tall guy). also I craft weapons out of steel for cosplay. so I cant believe that the stuff just as heavy.
+Sergei Voskoboynikov that is my point. how is this armor in the video compared to the medieval times. does it just like it, or is it accurate in the weight as well. that is what this discussion is about :P
+Kristian Severens for example, they barley have any chainmail and just protective clothing instead of chest plates. so I guess it might just be as heavy but they miss quite a few pieces of armor. still i wonder if it is steel or alluminium or other light metal.
i know its probably illegal but in the fury of battle,it seems pretty easy to accidentaly thrust a sword up under the helmet and kill your opponent pretty quickly
It really depends, but usually an opponent in armour will be wearing a steel bevor (neck guard) or a mail coif (a mail hood that wrapped around the whole head, leaving only the face exposed), which both protect the neck very well. A sword that has an acute enough point could pierce and burst the mail, but definitely not the plate steel bevor.
Marko Obrvan man with big shild get out of power, armor drain power like 1 minute fight=20 minute of fast running, usual buhurt fighter can not normally stand after 3min fight
Marko Obrvan Not sure what you mean by "the other guy."This was a really one sided-fight. Makhloev (the one who won) got a ton of good hits and multiple good takedowns. He was WAY ahead on points and Stadnichenko was hurt and bowed a few seconds before it would have ended, knowing he wasn't going to win.
Lol! What the fuck is this? Why are they even carrying swords? I mean, they don't use the swords in any meaningful way. No thrusts, no half-swording. they really care little about defending themselves. They are basically just bashing at each other. They could just as well replace the swords with fucking clubs or something. Or with maces or war hammers. That would actually be historically more accurate and would make a lot more sense.
historically correct or not i personally got a whole different perspective on how these fights would have looked liked. i know its not as nice and clean as they make it appear in the movies, but its way more savage than i previously thought.
You may strike with the weapon and the shield, punch, kick, trip, grapple for the takedown, and strike with the pommel. No thrusting, no wrapping both arms below the waist, no striking the feet or the backs of the knees. Points are scored for weapon strikes (not shield strikes, punches, kicks, or pommels), takedowns/knockdowns, and disarms. That's pretty much it.
New York Knights Combat In one of the other Russian fights, the commentators said that shield strikes are counted the same as weapon strikes in M1, and takedowns count for 5 points.
why the fuck isnt this more popular
B M.C. I totally agree...
B M.C. I am mot rly fan of MMA, but id totally watch this lol

B M.C. because it isn't realistic
This needs to be the world's favourite sport. Forget football (any kind), baseball, tennis, cricket, hockey and all those others. M1 Medieval is a sport I would watch fanatically
This only has to be international to be bigger than baseball so it won't be hard to imagine
Watching men flail at each other with metal swords, without any proper stance or technique? No thank you. I think I'll stick with HEMA.
Back in my day, all you got was a bronze sword and a metal loincloth.
Oh so you were a spartan?
Leave it to Russia to produce the best sport I have ever seen.
i swear i thought this was an asian thing XD
@@hyperpengu8722 lmao
Dark souls pvp in real life
Clearly without enough stats to wield the weapon -__- this is pointless
Need more dodge roll
This is the most stupidly rad thing I've ever seen in my life, I love it.
It's great how the fighters going into the ring show on their faces they are totally aware of how goofy this idea is, but the people in their corners are dead serious.
You don't seem to be aware how much some of these blows hurt, especially the shield bashes on the helmet. It's not just show and flowers.
are you allowed to end them rightly?
the Mylo What, by throwing your pommel?
+Morrigi192 there is no other way.
Bro I hope so
If they have time to unscrew the pommel
Hitting someone with the swords when they're wearing armor seems a bit pointless. I think this is why war hammers and maces were invented.
EGarrett01 Except these swords are blunt and for scoring points. And they dont seem to be allowed to jab and stab with them....
It's weird because it's supposed to represent real combat I think, and non-damaging sword strikes don't seem like they'd matter in a real fight.
EGarrett01 there also trying not to kill each other.
EGarrett01 IRL they would use a sword of this size to stab/thrust at weak points, such as under the arms, around the neck and joints. No way knights would flail at each other with these, they're too small to even dent armour.

this is fucked up and amazing at the same time
Welcome to Eastern Europe
4:42 for start of fight
Where has this been all my life.
In Russia
Why the ref isn't wearing armor too, they could accidentally stab ref..
+David Chandra I would at least be wearing a mask. Could easily get a swing in the eye.
It's his own responsibility to stay clear.
+David Chandra He IS wearing armour. Well, sort of.
That red thing he's wearing is a gambeson. Historically, knights wear these under the mail and armour. Its pretty padded and can withstand slashes of a fully sharpened longsword full force.

Good ol warlord for me

I can see now why some historical armies had a spike sticking out of the center of their shields. You could attack and defend at the same time.
And is jabbing allowed??
I feel that if the fighters were this armored, wouldn't it be more effective to fight with a heavy blunt weapon like a thick hammer or a large mace? One impact shockwave can penetrate the armor and seriously incapacitate

Is this a gameplay trailer for the new Chivalry: Medieval Warfare?
Are they not allowed to thrust?
The Derp Gaming Extravaganza No, it's based on medieval tournament rules, which banned thrusts due to injuries.
Are maces allowed
I don't get why so many people are complaining. It's basically like what is boxing is to fist fighting.
It's a sport.
Holy crap what did I just watch? That was amazing
Can someone tell me more abouth this Sport? Im totaly new here (Like rules or where i can find some live M-1 ore other things thanks)

Who would win in a joust: Cain or Tyson?
why no one use Half-sword in m1

+i Neko 0/10 no pommel thrown
+Darcksage not even a attempt at a pommel throw
+Preston Sheppard
0/10 not even 30 full seconds spent in the middle of a fight to unscrew pommel

it's acually the first time i hear about this discipline, in witch countries is held most?

TheRpggamer91 It started in Russia and Ukraine, but with Battle of the Nations, countries all over the world participate. Look it up.
That round shield seems to be making a huge difference

M LABS It actually is fairly historically accurate... for the tournament field, not the battlefield.
Where is the footwork?
One thing can someone explain how you win?
Solo Waggin Points are given for shield and weapon strikes, as well as takedowns.
what real men have been waiting for. M1 🔥🔥🔥

Interesting...how the hell do they judge?
Hard hit to body=1 point
Takedown = 5 points
Ez pez
For once, I'm not concerned about historical accuracy. This is awesome.
I really like the winners shield and brigandine colours.
где наши в обсуждении?
this is awesome. I hope this becomes an international thing
Not gonna lie, that actually looks brutal !
love the sportsmanship
How do you score this fight? By the number of strikes unblocked? aggression? ring control?
You get points for weapon strikes, takedowns/knockdowns, and disarms.

At 10:26 those vets are like "...look at those newbs LOL"
Jesus those Shields are more terrifying than the swords most times.

Why aren't they actively guarding with those shields? It's pretty idiotic not to.
Are these armor pieces and weapons really same weight as they were in the medieval times? The fight seems so fast paced, and they swing that shit around like it's made out of plastic. Or are these guys just seriously strong? 0.o
yes and yes
armored fighting is not like in the movies, armor is surprisingly light and easy to move in
+Sergei Voskoboynikov the medieval armor and weapons were not light. I have worn chainmail and it was not light (and i am a 140kg heavy, 1.95 meter tall guy). also I craft weapons out of steel for cosplay. so I cant believe that the stuff just as heavy.
well its relatively light and easy to move in compared to what the movies and games tell us, just look at those guys in the video
+Sergei Voskoboynikov that is my point. how is this armor in the video compared to the medieval times. does it just like it, or is it accurate in the weight as well. that is what this discussion is about :P

Blunted swords m8.
Why the other guy won?
Marko Obrvan victory in points

Becouse his oponent can't continue
Marko Obrvan Are you joking? It was an extremely one-side fight.
What are the rules??
what s the name of the second song ??? please
Qual o objetivo da luta? :v
Lol! What the fuck is this? Why are they even carrying swords? I mean, they don't use the swords in any meaningful way. Probus Excogitatoris If they don't care about defending themselves why are they using their shields?
Probus Excogitatoris this reprtesents tournament fights, which was mostly the same, back in medieval times.
Лев Стонт Okay, I see. Well, then it sort of makes sense. Thanks.
Sam West well, actually this armor protects quite well, so there are very rare cases of serious injuries, I dont't remember any recordings of deathes.
Sam West well, not during battle\fight. Some accidents during festivals, of course occured..
so awesome!
why we didnt see this match on WWE???
they are stumbling around alot in this one but not all the matches look like this
historically correct or not i personally got a whole different perspective on how these fights would have looked liked. i know its not as nice and clean as they make it appear in the movies, but its way more savage than i previously thought.
Feel like they need a transparent "shield" on top of their eye slots... the sword might go in by chance and blind someone.
+aaron4820 from what ive seen they avoid stabs and only seem to do slashes/chops
+TmanGaming kinda hard to stab being locked on the position of your sword like that
+irondvs1996 well they have plenty of chances to thrust at eachother
The Ref has brass balls. no helmet?
This is awesome
What are the rules
You may strike with the weapon and the shield, punch, kick, trip, grapple for the takedown, and strike with the pommel. No thrusting, no wrapping both arms below the waist, no striking the feet or the backs of the knees. Points are scored for weapon strikes (not shield strikes, punches, kicks, or pommels), takedowns/knockdowns, and disarms. That's pretty much it.
New York Knights Combat In one of the other Russian fights, the commentators said that shield strikes are counted the same as weapon strikes in M1, and takedowns count for 5 points.
They Should add helbert/spear division.
Truly amazing times we live in today.
Where's the parry daggers and greatswords, come on.
i wouldn't want to have to step in as the ref and have no face mask...
+Jon Malahoff are you stupid? people would die, imagine having a stray stab hit you in the eye, its blunt, but it would still do massive damage
Lots of options for low kicks...
Guy Eshel
And why I don't see body parts flying around..
