My grandparents lived in Pumkin Center (Tonto Basin). Spent many a day playing in Tonto Creek and fishing in Roosevelt Lake. Great video. Thanks for the memories. The saguaro cactus blossom is the state flower of AZ.
Hubby and I have only lived in AZ three years so just getting the lay of the land so to speak. I especially enjoy seeing all these interesting places to visit. Great scenery. Fabulous job of going there and taking the video Russ. Many thanks!
Good news about full recovery for reservoirs and cooler weather. Those cactus flowering crowns just something wouldn’t have thought about.. drone view was super!
I took a trip from Phoenix, down to Tucson, back up through Globe and also this area...got some FABULOUS photos...I just love that bridge! lol...I made a video about it too...love that area!
Thank you Russ for this and all your videos! It's been 35 years since we travelled there so many memories you bring back to us. We drove to the dam then to Tortilla Flats and camped there a few times was a nice drive where we bought burgers and lemon pie. We miss the travells, thanks again .
Hi Russ, I’ve always loved driving in Arizona, we’ve been to many places in the mountains, been on rides in rural areas, went on boat rides along the Colorado River! Payson has been an interesting little place to visit! Our last trip was to Tucson, also visited Tombstone!
Used to go out there by street bike or Jeep about once every other week back in the late 90's. On the back road into Mesa you would quite often have cattle and/or horses plodding on the highway. The dam has a number of claims to fame on the historical marker 🙂
🙋♀Hello Russ! Another beautiful day! Enjoyed seeing Roosevelt Lake, & the Dam. The arch bridge was neat! Have a good weekend. Hope the van will be okay.👍
Thanks for another beautiful video, Russ! I have wanted to see the dam and lake in recent years after seeing some video produced by the folks at the Lost Dutchman Museum. At the time it was constructed, it was the tallest masonry dam in the world. Theodore Roosevelt opened the dam at its dedication in March of 1911, but the original name was not Roosevelt Dam, but Salt River Dam. The renaming would not take place until 1959. I'm definitely going to put it on my "must-see" list for AZ! Cheers!
Another excellent job, Russ, as always! Even though this is in my back yard, and I have been here many times, it's always nice to see it through a new set of eyes. Good work! Safe travels, my friend....
That was a nice drive and the bridge and water level was so good to see. That one skinny road was a little scary looking, thank heavens they have the wait and go pull outs. Thanks for showing places I've never been. I just Love AZ. Be well and safe travels.
Love your videos!!! Been touring a lot of where you have been!! Love Globe, Oak Creek Canyon, Jerome ect!!!! Going back this!! Thanks again Peter From Maine
I was up there in april camping for a week. I parked right where you did by the bridge over look and walked under the bridge and caught to catfish one day. I see the water was up even more than when i was there. That property below the marina is private land only for members now. We used to camp down there for a small fee and use the boat ramp .
I’m definitely going here next time I’m in AZ. My dad was a power plant operator. So we always visited dams and lived by the dams. Not been to this this dam though. We lived at the Grand Coulee Dam which backed up the Columbia River which that part of the river is called Lake Roosevelt after Franklin Delano Roosevelt who came there when building the Grand Coulee Dam. He was there at Grand Coulee Dam October 2 1937. Love this trip Russ. I lived below the Grand Coulee Dam. You get use to it because the beauty is beyond belief. It was cooler because in the summer if they had to release water it would make the city 10-15 degrees cooler. We could even feel the spray from the water coming over at our house. The water w/o be so much and so powerful you could see the white water and foam a half a mile down river
Hey rver Russ,,,,my wife and I enjoy your videos and so much information you give us is very useful,,,,, thank you 🙏, we are planning a trip to the Grand Canyon and seeing your videos on that and especially the free boondocking areas and great. We will be camping those areas hopefully we sleep comfortably in my ford f-150 with a camper on it. Q. Do you think it’s a good idea. Driving from Texas ! 😂😂🎉
Spent a couple months around Roosevelt lake for 3 winters. The Apache trail is closed at Fish Creek hill. It was about a 18 percent grade one lane with pull outs. Scary ride with a one ton dually and a truck camper. But the third year it was closed due to numerous washouts and rock slides. Beautiful NF campground (Burnt Corral) on Apache lake. They were going to chip seal and pave part of the road. Maybe that's what the dump truck was about... Brought back memories... Thanks....
Thank you Russ. Can't wait to get back to AZ. Boyce Thompson Arboretum is one of my stops out that way too. The dam is beautiful and so is the weather. I'm still in CO but at least it's cooler here for a while.
I think those weird forms on the right of the dam, (in the rock), are the old overflow. I looked it up and the dam was expanded in the 80's/90's. I could be wrong but I think that means they built the dam higher? Others probably know. Love the aerial views of the cacti blossoms. That's beyond cool. Sure wish I could head that way but once again,....I've waited too long. It's heating up already and little rv doesn't care for that so much. Anyway - thanks for desert views. Cheers. 👍
Back in 2017 I took Rt88 past Tortilla Flat and drove all the way to Roosevelt Dam and back around to Globe. Took road not knowing it was dirt. Best fun I had by accident on my trip west to Apache Junction. Hope they make the repair.
The saguaro cactus blossom is the official Arizona state flower. Nice to get those shots of them with the drone. I also recall taking a trip to Roosevelt Dam back in the 1980s with my brother and sister-in-law, (who he had just started dating at the time.) We took the now washed out road from Mesa and drove up to the back of the dam, but we didn't go to the lake itself. After seeing your video, I wish we had. It's a beautiful part of Arizona.
The Roosevelt Dam was raised up several years ago. Was there in 1970 and 1996. Looks completely different from 1970 after it was raised. It was a masonry dam resembling stone blocks.
This Lake will be hopping come Fourth of July people.I'm a native arizonan I know the lake.anybody that's lived here for years will be coming up to Roosevelt from Phoenix she's gorgeous man wow, proud to be an Arizonan i was born in Scottsdale 1963 I'm proud.
I drove the Apache trail from Phoenix, Apache Junction in 2002, up to Roosevelt Dam and up to the lake, onward to Payson. The first part is hardtop, the balance is dirt. I camped (tent) just before Tortilla Flat. Such a lovely, quiet road back then. I believe it's been closed for a while, lots been washed away. Oldtimer Englishman reliving past adventures with you now.
Oh man...Russ...I wish you had seen just how far that road goes because I stopped where you stopped...not enough time before the sun was going to set before I got back to Phoenix...darn! lol
Back in the mid to late 80's be fore the bridge you was allowed to drive across the dam. Sad to hear the Apache Trail is closed. It is a very narrow and winedy road all the way to Apache Junction.
I was with Salt River Project for 20 years and my job took me everywhere. I went to all the damns and power plants, all except Roosevelt.... I never got up there!
If you stop on the left in the parking area before the tunnel. You can walk around and check out the old tunnel. There are bats in the old tunnel. Pretty cool.
Hey mate. You forgot to go little further down... I just found out this lake and decided to stop by and we drove like .5 mile further down where the 2 flags are. Danger though
Hi Russ. NSW Australia here watching yet again, one of your top notch road videos. It was way back in 1993 that I drove up the dirt road below the Roosevelt Dam from Apache Junction. I remember being very impressed by the dam because of the huge blocks of stone that was used in its construction that could be seen on the face of it. I then continued on down to Globe.
The Apache Trail was the way everything made it to the dam site built mostly by Indians. My grandparents lived in what was called Livingston (1900 to 1907) on the river plain raising vegetables and hay; which ended up in Globe; taking two days to reach.
That was cool to see those flowers on top of those cactus
Wonderful☺️

Happy days for All the water in the reservoir. That will keep the food growing for us all. 😅😅😅
I was up to the dam in the early nineties and the gates were open letting out a lot of water.
Fires in the area a few years back did the Vegetation in. Rains then washed all away
It has been a long time since I have been to Roosevelt Lake
When in spring does the cactus bloom?
I was with Salt River Project for 20 years and my job took me everywhere. I went to all the damns and power plants, all except Roosevelt.... I never got up there!
I like your videos 💕
Hi Russ!
White Mts way north of globe
Been there. Very nice area when there is H2O
What is the whistling sound when you are driving? Just curious.
Danger though
last time I was there, the new dam had not started to be built. Did they remove the old dam, of just flood it?
The dam was not replaced. It reinforced with new concrete and raised 77 feet to increase capacity.
@@davidgale4604 great! never got the end of what happened
The Movie, "Jake's Corner" just popped in my thoughts...
(Free, right here on YT)
That's a federal U.S. Campground it is called Oak Flats it is by Magna mine. 😊
Stick your finger in the leak and save Phoenix! 🌊 Dam good video, sir.
Graduated Chandler High,1976!
