    I've been spraying the worm chow after I put it on the bed, but i notice you spray first and throw on the chow. Will it absorb the moisture without spraying it? Thanks.

    • @TheGardenAndWormLady
      @TheGardenAndWormLady  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to do the same thing. It’s better to spray first, then add the worm chow. The reason is if you spray after the food go into the bedding and can cause fermentation, which can lead to protein poisoning. I sprinkle the food on the surface after I sprayed and then I cover it with Whitneys paper or wet paper. The Worms will come up from underneath and take it.

    Loaded with lots of good info. 👍👍
    I am not against wearing gloves, it is just something I do not do, you covered the reasons at 17:22. That sense of touch to the human skin is so valuable and the most accurate way to dial in the moisture content of the bedding. The feel and the texture are also very helpful in determining when the bedding has been converted into castings. Another 👍 for soap, water and a nail brush.
    Enjoyable and educational watching you go through and top feed with your worm's chow.

    *prepare for a book because I cannot just simply ask questions to save my life 😅😅😅*
    I got a generous handful of worms/castings from a local planty friend, but they're all still quite small, and I'm hoping to fatten them up, as well as get them to multiply in a more controlled setting for my sake. (trying to see roughly how many coccoons I can get per worm) So I set myself up a mini breeder bin. Last night, I pulled out 60 red wigglers (of course I also ended up with blues lol) thanks to TH-cam helping me identify the two, all of which are very close to breeding age, or already breeding age and put them in a 6 qt bin that I'm only putting about 1 1/2 inches deep of bedding. Bedding is currently made up of coco coir, and powdered leaves soaked in water that has molasses and kelp powder mixed in. The worm chow I'm currently using is pretty much just standard expired cabinet grains, but I did take your advice and pick up a jar of cricket food that I plan on adding to my normal mix tonight. Is there any other tips I should try? Also how do you know you're not adding too much water without disturbing the breeders? I want to start making worm chow similar to yours, but need to get the ingredients over time for financials sake. If you had to pick between ingredients, what would you say you feel has made the most impact? Or if you can't tell, which would you get first?
    Again I'm very sorry I wrote so much 😅😅😅

    • @TheGardenAndWormLady
      @TheGardenAndWormLady  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's ok to comment as long as you want :) I'm also a talker LOL!!! Sounds like you got a plan. Go very slow with the cricket feed. It's very high in protein so I use it occasionally, like a treat. If i had to pick some chow ingredients I would pick these 3. Oatmeal, cornmeal and oyster shell. I would also feed them food scraps. I feed my breeders and babies food scrapes too. If you keep an eye on them and take care of them they'll do wonderful for you. The trick to plump worms is the above ingredients and moisture. The moisture plumps them up. If you get springtails don't worry just dry the bin a little and they start to disappear. Springtails will always be present no matter what, it's nature. Even if you get alot of springtails they don't hurt anything just dry the bin out some. I think you're doing an amazing job. Keep up the good work :) :)

      @@TheGardenAndWormLady thank you so much for all your help! Also thanks for the heads up on the cricket food. I will definitely make sure to use it sparingly. I'm so excited to see what my worms can do in 21 days 😅. How often should I be giving them worm chow? I've roughly got a routine down for food scraps so far.

    7:13 I tried using that Tractor Supply pine pellet bedding (hydrated to the right level of moisture) as worm bedding one time and my worms hated it. They just laid on the surface and did not want to burrow into it. It just turns into moist sawdust when you add water but it might have too strong of a pine essence for the worms or something.
