  • Professional baker Vallery Lomas and home cook Daniel are swapping ingredients and hitting the kitchen! We set Daniel up with $161 worth of ingredients from chef Vallery’s pantry along with her instructions for making an out-of-this-world apple pie. To lend a helping hand, food scientist Rose dialed in to offer some of her trademark wisdom and encouragement. Over with Vallery, a more customary $9 recipe from Daniel’s arsenal was being augmented and altered in a quest to make it something gourmet. Which of these apple pies are you dying for a slice of?

PSA: It's worth buying actual vanilla pods at least once. Even after you've scraped out the marrow, you can still get a lot of mileage out of them. For instance, if you just leave the pods in a little box with sugar, you'll eventually end up with proper vanilla sugar which is way better than the artificially flavoured junk you get at the grovery store.

Something I realized is that for the cheap set of ingredients, they only price out the amount called for in the recipe, like if you only use a few scoops of ice cream they price it at $1 or something, but for the expensive set of ingredients they price out everything. When you see people leaving comments like "$150 for a taco? Outrageous!" it's more like $150 for a taco and half a pantry full of ingredients. I get that they do it for the clickbait, but the reality for most of these videos is that the expensive ingredients are probably 2 or 3 times as expensive as the cheap ones, not 10 or 20 times more expensive. It's super misleading and discourages people from experimenting with nice ingredients at home.

Idea: Pro Chefs make other country or regional cuisine, stuff they aren't used to making. For example Saul making Sushi. I'm sure in culinary school they learn to make stuff from other countries, but once they're in their own restaurants and whatnot, they only focus on what they serve at their restaurant and what they grew up making, which in this case Saul and Mexican food. The chefs would have little to no help, with *maybe* a phone call to Rose. thoughts?

Here in Germany they have some episodes in a show, where a foreign chef gets a cooked meal by a German chef and has to reproduce it on taste only. It mostly does turn out differently, but the German chef that's taste testing often likes the result as well and both chefs are able to talk about the experience and so on after. It's really interesting. So, yeah, I'd like to see Frank, Saul and Co. try foreign dishes, maybe pick the ingredients that they think are needed for the recipe. Would be fun :)

I loved it so much😍😍 Great recipes and is beautifully done. Daniel is my favourite as always, he is the best; and Chef Vallery seems so sweet and talented; she made everything from what she had without adding anything extra and explained everything so sweetly. Hope to see both Daniel and Chef Vallery together in more videos
Alsooooo, they actually added that SpongeBob SquarePants "14 hours later" with Daniel's voice over 🤣🤣🤣 that was awesome😂😂👏👏

The pricing is so off. How are you breaking down the cost of the home made apple pie? By slice? There's no way that was only $9 worth of ingredients.

Is it just me, or are the total prices always off? $1.00 for a pint of Haagen-Daaz? Maybe the portion used was only $1. But, it’s not like he’s using the full bottle of Calvados, right?

I was trying to re-create the $9 dollar pie but I had to eye ball majority of the ingredients and also the cooking time is no where to be found😅. I hope my pie turns out okay. Lol I’ll keep you guys posted.

Outside of the Calvados the ingredients from the pro-chef are very affordable, especially if apples are in season. I'd always include lemon peel in an apple pie. It's such a difference to the quality and it's barely an extra $1.

I'm always impressed by how many other sensory cues help you to know that your recipe's gonna taste good throughout the process. IE In this one, the crunch of the pie crust, the smell of the salted caramel, or the the way buttery dough can be smooshed together
