Crocheting and knitting have become one of my favorite things to do, but it can be challenging to see what you're doing when you're visually impaired. After working on a lot of projects, I have come up will some little tips and tricks that make it easier to see what I'm working on, and I hope they will help you out as well!

Another trick for threading a yarn needle that I learned doing needlepoint, is to use a small piece of paper. Fold it in half lengthwise, on one short end, cut the paper at an angle (like you were folding a paper airplane). Make sure the paper will fit through the eye of the needle. Place the loose end of the yarn in the crease and slide the entire paper and yarn end through the eye of the needle. Pull the paper away after the end of the yarn is through the eye, and your needle is threaded.

Thank you for your great ideas. I have been visually impaired all my life. I started to knit as a teenager and to crochet in my thirties. My first projects were first big sized, but with time I managed to use smaller sizes of needles and hooks. But my point is to do it without looking at my hands. I can so knit or crochet even in a dark room. For me it is a great idea when I cant fall asleep. Seaming is for me the most tricky and demanding part. This is why I have so many unfinished projects. My advice is, when you want to learn crocheting , start with baskets and t-shirt yarn or cord. Look for big projects - baskets, blankets, rugs. It is really fun

Hi, I’m Sandy, and I’m from Cincinnati. Five weight yarn is great and I like my big.N hook. However, I use a lot of weight, and I find that bright, or light, yarn works best.
As for light, I have a light that I got from Amazon that goes around my neck and it has two light that I can point wherever I need to be and I find that really helpful. I think it was about 20 bucks. Believe it or not, if I hold my work over my iPad , the light shines through and shows me where I need to put my hook if I am using darker yarn. I found this out by accident.
My favorite hooks are my Tulips, and my Clover Amour hooks. The clovers are colorful, so I don’t have to read the size.
Thank goodness for today’s technology. And, thank you for taking the time to make this video.

Thanks! Your tips are really helpful. I have genetic Optic Atrophy and I've been VI since I was 3. I just started to crochet about a month ago. I had a couple of people tell me that blind people can't crochet and neither can left handers. My response was "challenge accepted" I took your advice and used big print yarn and already made a scarf. It's full of mistakes but I'm still totally proud of my work. Your advice about using the coffee table is awesome. I've been using my kitchen table and it kills my neck. So thanks a ton. :)

Thanks for your video. My 88yo mom has crocheted her whole life, even after losing sight in one eye years ago. However, macular degeneration is causing her problems and I know she is sad about the loss of her favorite craft.

Easy way to thread a yarn needle: cut a small pice of paper, small enough to fit through the needle’s eye. The thicker paper for magazine subscriptions in magazines is great. Fold the piece of paper in half, keeping the piece of yarn in between the paper. Push through the eye of the needle.

Really helpful and I agree about the colour. I tried black and I couldnt see the stitches at all. Also I thread my bobbin needle the same way as you do. My main trouble is seeing what people are doing when they demonstrate a pattern. Glad I found you

Thank you for these tips, they're things I never would have thought of. My multiple-impaired niece wants to try crochet so I'm looking for all kinds of tips to try and help facilitate that. She can see some colors so I think trying with a light-colored yarn wouldn't have occurred to me if you hadn't suggested it! Have you tried looking for plastic seaming needles? A bunch of companies make plastic needles if the reflection on the metal needle is a problem.

That’s awesome, I have been crocheting a lot more since quarrantine, but I haven’t done sewing or seaming or anything but I like to crochet. I’ve been focusing on trying to crochet tactilely more to reduce eye strain, and I have been able to do it by touch. I feel the stitches between my thumb and pointer finger and when I’m finding where to put the needle in to make a new row I’ll have the strand I want to use on my pointer finger and use the needle to pick it up from there if that makes sense. I tend to go back to using my eyes most of the time because that’s what I’m used to but I thought I would mention the tactile methtods I havr found. If I need something to be straight I crochet like normal which is usually in a chair sitting up with the needle up against my face, and I’ll just put it down on a flat surface a lot to make sure it’s still flat. So far I’ve made what will be a bag once I make a handle for it. I was planning on a blanket but it was way too crooked. Now I’m working on a scarf

I thought this video was great and helpful. Something similar to what I have in mind for doing. I am visually impaired, legally blind as well. I loom knit, arm knit, finger knit and finger crochet. I am really into my loom knitting right now, I am currently working on a 10 stich blanket and a figure 8 scarf. I've found contrasting yarn to be helpful so like for my scarf I'm using a dark purple loom and a bright purple and bright pink yarn and my blanket I'm using a loom with dark blue pegs and light purple yarn. I'm wanting to get a loom with light colored pegs so I can try dark yarn. I enjoy the 10 stitch blanket because it's only 10 stitches no row counting or anything and when picking up stitches I can just feel the loops and I can use a small loom so I can easily hold it as close as I need too. I've been looking for better lighting options and one I can travel with. The head lamp is a great idea that I will have to try so thank you for the tip.

Wonderful video! I have retinitis pigmentosa and my front vision is being taken first instead of my peripheral and I want to learn how to crochet because I am extremely bored. Do you know where there is a very easy tutorial to start? Need a step-by-step instructions very slow lol.

I'm sighted, but I also find white yarn difficult to see stitches on, I think it might be to do with the fact that white has very low contrast.

I wonder if you could rub your seaming needle a bit with sandpaper and maybe scuff it up so it doesn't reflect the light as much.

I'm legally blind, and I've been loom knitting for a while because I thought it would be a better place to start with my vision. But recently I've been trying to learn on needles, and it's a bit of an ordeal. Especially when so many video tutorials are like, "See what I'm doing here? ...as you can see..." etc.
I also love to sew and a lot of other visual arts, but somehow, the sewing and knitting has been the hardest couple of crafts to get into.

i'm also visually impaired. And I also do loom knitting but I can't freehand knit for anything. My mom's friend is actually giving me a bunch of looms as a housewarming gift including some that are different from any I've ever used before. One is a weird S shape loom that I didn't know what it was but I looked it up and found out that it was an Afghan loom, and the other is a straight loom similar to some that I have, except the pegs are thinner and much closer together and it is meant for knitted socks. It can also be used for other things that need a close knit.

Personally I knit with sock weight almost exclusively but I have most stitches memorized and don't have to look at it often. I knit a lot of complicated lace/ pattern work and use a app ( row counter is the name of it ) on my tablet to import the pdf enlarge images and keep track of my rows. I like using light weight yarn because I can hold it up closer to my face without my arms fatiguing too quickly. I knit in very well lighted rooms often with like a bendy lamp positioned behind me to give the best lighting. Oh and I prefer to knit in the round as much as possible to avoid seaming because ya its a bitch!

this video was useful but it would be more helpful if you gave more tips for people that can't see as well. I have some usable vision but not really enough to count for anything when it comes to things like this. I will say the one tip for threading yarn through a tapestry needle in addition to your one about folding it is to lick the end of it. if you lick the end of it and then pull it through, it will not fray like it does when it's dry, and you end up cutting off that part anyway so it's not like you're lick yarn is going to be part of your project

Yes I am blind. I crochet a little. I only use single stich because I can't see how to use ,more complicated. Can I make nice things like that, I use 8 or larger hooks and kind of fat yarn I think it's called bulky maybe.

Are you a member or are you affiliated with the national Federation of the Blind?
I have low vision, I’m affiliated with the Philadelphia chapter, and just today found out about crafting classes offered by other members.
