    scalloped edge. I agree with all of your assessments on what looks cheap. I have pants with a short zipper and now I see why I never wear them. I love your hair, makeup and gray hooded sweater in this video. Thank you. Your personality makes me smile too!

      I think it’s called a lettuce edge. Recycled style from 30- 40 years ago?

    Your hair looks amazing!! I agree with many here - the last top is a no-go. The lettuce edge seems outdated and the exaggerated length of the sleeves will not hold up well. Your instinct about the green J. Crew sweater was spot on. Aside from the buttons not being right, I thought the fabric had a bulky or "spongey" look about it, and I didn't think the collar shape was very flattering.

    • @ANNAREID29
      @ANNAREID29  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes that’s what someone else said as well about the j crew top! Seems like there were more than just the buttons making it look cheap! ❤️❤️

    I like the 'lettuce' top, but the long bell sleeves that I won't be able to push up .. is a big no. And while I find Lilysilk clothing beautiful, classy, and sophisticated, it's mostly dry clean only and I am so done with that in my life .. lol.

      I won’t buy anything white or cream that has to be dry cleaned as cleaners are notorious for not changing their solvent frequently and clothing will get grey from dirty solvents; no matter how expensive the cleaners are, I have found that to be a major issue. I will handwash cashmere and some silks.

    It’s a lettuce edge, but sometimes they are called a scalloped edge. I hate those edges on tops. The sleeves would definitely look bad after wearing them icier and over again, and they get dingier than other parts of the sweater faster. Definitely a no.

    I thrifted a Talbots vest years ago that works over and under shirts. The thing I look for is that the back is the same material as the face. The one I have has like a blazer collar that really completes a few shirts I have don’t have any collars when worn under like a tank.

  • @lynnmyrick4045
    @lynnmyrick4045 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Your instincts are right about the scalloped edge top. The sleeves are a bit too long and I think the edges may lose their shape over time. Also the edges on the bottom make it less versatile since it’s likely to create bulk if you want to tuck it in.

    I know what you mean with the jeans and spandex. I don’t purchase those anymore. I also do not buy mid-waist jeans. Zippers are too short and the waist chops me in half. Now I only buy higher waist pants in everything. I’m much more comfortable and just looks better on my petite frame. Just a note: When I purchase tops or sweaters in white or ivory, I size up. I find that it elevates the look and if it is a lesser quality material, it’s easier to disguise when it’s not so tight.

    I've also noticed a trend with "drop sleeves", and I am not a fan. If you carry any weight at all in your arms, as I do, it just adds more bulk and emphasizes it and it is very unflattering. I prefer the seam to be right at my shoulder. But this drop sleeve look is everywhere, and it is very frustrating. I think it looks cheap too, tbh

  • @faas6679
    @faas6679 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

    Thanks, Anna. For me, the biggest factor in whether something looks inexpensive and is going to wear horribly, is the fabrication. That is the first thing I look at. I may be a 'dinosaur', as old enough to be your mother, but I cannot stand the fabrics used today, even on items that are pricey. All the modal, viscose, acrylic, rayon, polyester, etc etc...unless you are into fast fashion and don't have plans to wear longer than a season, they look horrible...especially modal that will pill after one season. I realize it all comes down to cost, but when I see things that are expensive and the fabrication is as cheap as can be...it just burns me! I would rather purchase an inexpensive Gap shirt that is 100% cotton or linen, that I know will look more expensive and stay looking good through many wearings and washings, than a pricey top of synthetic garbage...imho. I find the same with shoes; what used to be considered 'cheap' shoes with synthetic insoles and synthetic soles instead of leather, are now priced at what used to be ' good shoes' pricing. I even see expensive shoes made of polyurethane- UGH..I know, sound like "...back in my day....", but a real pet peeve of mine.....inflation comes in, and quality goes out. 😪

      @@ANNAREID29agreed! You mentioned the “ cheap looking” buttons on the one shirt; I have found replacing buttons, especially on a blazer , instantly elevates the item. I am done with cheap sweaters, especially eyelash knit. I stick to wool, cotton/linen, cashmere or blend with a small % of synthetic fiber. The only non natural knit I tolerate is chenille but good quality chenille yarn that won’t break easily is hard to find.

  • @denisadellinger4543
    @denisadellinger4543 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I'm with you. If there is something about the item you aren't crazy about, it's best to just eliminate it from consideration. it's unfortunate that our experiences now is ordering online, getting it and not loving it only to have to send it back. I'm not a sender backer. Too much trouble to pack it back up, take it to the post office or wherever, and maybe pay to mail it back. I don't even know the process. Too much! I can't cope! So it ends up in my house, not being worn and I'm poorer. I'd rather go try on in the store, look at it, feel the fabric, etc. LIfe is too short for just, "I'm not loving it.'

    No on the top. Besides the edges, the sleeves would drive me crazy. Too long to leave full length and you can't push them up. When I see a lettuce edge, I always think that the fabric stretched out when putting a regular hem in, so that's how they solved the problem in manufacturing.

I told them to learn their fabrics. I’m sure I’ve given both of them a cheaper version of a cashmere sweater. And I gave them all some other clothes. Plus, my oldest granddaughter, who was visiting from out of state. Brought them some clothes. I say them because I have three older granddaughters, and two young ones. I bought a pair of wide leg jeans from Old Navy. And I really like them. I started off with a cheaper version just to see if I would wear them. I think the sleeves are too long on the lettuce edge top. It seems like almost everything I buy, the sleeves are too long. I usually just turn them up. But you can’t with that kind.

    The only thing I liked about the bright fuschia top is the color, and I agree that it looks low quality. I also agree that the H&M jeans look odd with the short zipper, and even if they didn't look odd, the fact that they give you a camel toe would makes them a huge NO. The green J. Crew top I thought was cute, and I didn't have a problem with the buttons, but if you didn't object to buttons on the shirt as part of its look, you could easily swap them for something you liked better. I'd be a fan of the lettuce-edge top if the sleeves weren't ridiculously long. I don't know how you could even function with those. I loved the video!

    I’ll splurge the extra $20.00 to $30.00 dollars for lining and make my own clothing.

    I don’t hear a lot about Rag & Bone but I did purchase a blazer from them & it is one of the most beautifully constructed pieces of clothing I’ve ever had. Pricey yes but worth every penny if you can swing it.

    When I'm not fooling around in my bike and need to look decent, my go to brands are definitely Rag and Bone, Lafayette or Lafayette 148, Go Silk, and Rock and Republic. They are nice pieces and timeless classics.

    I feel the same way about the express sweater, Love all the other ones, I take very good care of my sweaters as well, I still have some sweaters/tops from the Loft going back 6 years ago, I kid you not, no longer buy a lot of clothes for I'm retired now, but sometimes with company's its either a miss or a hit! Love this video!

      Speaking of loft (and express) in the late aughts/early 2010s I could find so many great pieces at those stores, wear them on a weekly rotation through the season, and they lasted YEARS. Why they have chosen this path of cheap fabrics and poor craftsmanship is beyond me.

    I like ribbed sweaters. I like a bell sleeve...but that one you bought where the sleeves are intentionally too long? It looks like you hung your sweater up to dry and the sleeves stretched out. Looks accidental rather than intentional. Never thought about how zipper length changes fit, but maybe that's why I don't like some of my pants...especially having a lower tummy roll.

    I’m afraid I agree with many people here, the last top doesn’t really sit right on you, I feel the problem is around the sides of the bust, there is too much fabric. Sorry 😢 But I really love your channel and have taken loads of your advice to heart regarding my clothing choices. Thank you xx

    I do like the look of bell sleeves but they very much get on my nerves when I wear them because you always have to hold them up when you are doing stuff. You can be sure that I get them dirty or wet (dragging them through food or whatever) or knock stuff over within an hour of wearing them.

    Another great video!Thanks! You are righ about the first top 100%!
    The last top... was not so flattering, since you asked. With the tightness, those extremely long sleeves were just out of balance. The "lettuce " edge also seems quite outdated. Everything you normally pick Anna, is spot on, though. 😊

      One can wear sleeves like this while living in the time of the Baroque (1600 - start of 1700), having a lot of servants and maids and not being forced to earn the living.

    As a person who sews a lot:
    Vests just have to fit perfektly to really look good. And while pants just have to fit good in waist and hipps, and blazers mostly on shoulders and a bit on the waist (depends on the fit) , vest have to fit perfektly on shoulders, back, waist and especialy in the bust region.
    In my opinion a really good fitting vest is Impossible to buy, it has to be tailored

    Here's my take on the trends that are back from the late 90s, like the lettuce edged ribbed top and the chenille ribbed sweaters and why I've been avoiding them: I remember having those items the first time around and turning my nose up at them as I pulled them from my closet and threw them into the donate bag. So I guess my answer to your question is that I don't like that edge 😆. I think it's well done on your top, but I just relate it too much to those shirts I tossed long ago. That JCrew top must have been so disappointing - would have been so much cuter with a johnny collar!

    Vest are very hard to make as ready to wear because there's so many adjustments on what is really very 'little fabric. Bust size, shape & height, torso length, waist measurement, armhole, etc... All places that need to be just right or it'll gape and look cheap, especially in unlined thin fabrics like linen.
    Bring your vest to a seamstress or tailor and see if they would use it to make you a new one, or better yet, make a pattern and a mockup (to verify the fit) so that in the future you can take the pattern to a decent sewist to make you new ones out of the fabric you want!

    I totally agree with what you said about colors of knitwears. I tend to buy basic pieces from inexpensive brands (ik ppl say you should do the opposite lol), and I got this tan color sweater from Topshop years ago and I still find myself wear it often in winter. It doesn't look cheap and I can style it with a lot of options.
    The stretchy jeans I also don't like, since their fabric usually is too lightweight. I always shop jeans in store so that I can feel the fabric and see the stitches.

    i think the top fits you well but i’m not a fan of the bell sleeves
    i like to push sleeves up and the bell sleeves don’t allow that
    i also don’t think it allows for versatility with the item
    i’m not sure i’d keep an item that i think i’d get sick of or can only wear one way.
