Season 7 of RuPaul's Drag Race was a wild ride, and we discussed all of the riggory last week. This week, it's time to get down to what would have happened if it WASN'T rigged. And this season gets very interesting...
As we always do, we'll break down every episode, every challenge winner, lip sync, and elimination and see how the season would have changed if it had been without production rigging. Will Violet Chachki still win the season? Will Tempest DuJour remain the first boot? Will underrated queens like Jaidynn Diore Fierce and Max make it longer than they did?
Let's just say this season ends up looking pretty different by the end of this video...

I was Trixie’s designer from Season 7. The nude illusion runway was in the brief and was brought from home. Trixie’s was painted to look like a poseable, nude fashion doll by artist Kyle Krueger.

i love how the show wanted a young fashion queen to win for “variety” but then the season was mostly comedy or acting challenges….
I think production was at the intersection of “we want a fashion queen” and “the most memorable and beloved challenges are comedy based” (particularly since they’d had three back to back iconic snatch games/roasts) and that’s how we got this season lol

I think if the season had not relied so heavily on the old-school versus new-school vibe, there would have been less riggory.

Please, max did nothing post show with all the fans and fame she was giving, the judges didn't have anything to do with that. Trixie was torn down by the judges yet she still managed to be one of the most successful queens out there
@@AlfredoV90 You seem to be intentionally ignoring the effect the edit and its resulting fan reception has on a queen’s future. Trixie may have flopped on S7, but she left the show a fan favorite. On the other hand, the show absolutely assassinated Max’s character - even ignoring them editing Max’s singing on the main stage out of context, she was consistently painted as a stuck-up prude who was putting on a fake character, not to mention Trixie was among the queens actively calling her out as the season aired. After S7, Trixie was loved by everyone while Max was fake at best and mentally unstable and attention seeking at worst - good luck trying to argue how they had an even playing field to capitalize on after the show.

The whole time all I could think was: Season 7 had the worst promo looks lol Also one of the reasons Ginger didn't win wasn't because she would've been the third consecutive comedy queen to win, but because production knew the fans didn't like her. Violet herself has said she thinks Ginger was supposed to win but when production saw fans didn't like her because of the Bitter Old Lady Brigade thing, they gave the crown to Violet.
Don't get me wrong, Violet deserved to win the real season and she's an equally deserving winner here, she still slays the season. But it's nice to see Ginger finally get a crown, even if it's imaginary!! Good to see Trixie getting her justice this season too!! 👑💅
Jasmine Masters had the best promo look
Season 7 is an underrated season but I definitely feel like the queens carried it, even the early outs like Tempest and Jasmine were stars

Kandy becomes the lip-sync assassin of the season was a plot twist but not an unpleasant one
For Glamazonian Airways, Ginger revealed that she originally had another outfit that matched the category however when she was putting in on the zipper split just as the PA called 5 minutes to the runway. Kennedy was quick to help her and they knew they wouldn’t be able to fix the gown in time. So Ginger told Kennedy to run and grab something pretty from her rack and she would defend it on the runway. Kennedy grabbed the cocktail dress. As for why Ginger didn't mention this on the main stage or in Untucked, I'm guessing she was trying to be professional and commit to the outfit or it would have been like asking the judges to give her a pass and overlook her runway since it was an emergency or that she was blaming Kennedy since she grabbed the outfit and that wouldn't have been fair to her or the other queens. All the same, I adore Ginger but nice to see Kasha get a win!! Also love this new season!! Ginger wins, Trixie makes the Top 3 and Violet still slays!! Love it all!! 💅👑
She might’ve said it and it just wasn’t shown in the episode cause it wasn’t relevant. We only really see a minor portion of the deliberations, it’s like a two hour dialogue for the queens in the moment (with lunch break in between I believe).
@@handsoaphandsoap exactly and I'm surprised they didn't air the moment like they did with Adore in episode 1 of Season 6. Seeing Ginger panic and Kennedy trying to help her like WTF do we do?! We have like 5 minutes!! It would've been such a great, dramatic TV moment!! I just remember her revealing it in an interview with feastoffun. When people read her for it not matching the category, I just point it out. Point is, she knew it didn't match the category and was going to wear something that did.

Your assumption that Max and Trixie would hypothetically win the Despy awards rests on the assumption that Trixie would allow Max to write material for both of them or even let her get a word in edgewise. If only we had several years of examples of Trixie co-hosting a show with a queen with a specific oddball sensibility to show us if that would actually happen. (I'm kidding I love Trixie, please don't come for me, it's just a JOKE.)

Well, while I do agree, when Trixie was working with Milk in AS3, she was the funniest and yet was getting steamrolled. So who knows, Trixie is professional on Drag Race, while on UNHhhh it's a free for all. I don't think her winning Despy with Max is that far out of the box.

For Sashas nude illusion, apparently the queens were told that they would be judged solely for the Resort Wear tearaway look and the nude illusion would be blurred out for tv/ the audience, thats why Sasha didn't put much effort into it because production literally said it wouldn't be seen by the audience. She explained this on a podcast i believe.

in my opinion, Mayhem Miller was unfairly eliminated in that lip sync against Serena cha cha and should have won this season and won every challenge on all winners season so she could become queen of all queens

Love this "un-rigging"! Thank you for giving Jaidynn her flowers 😂 I'm so glad that S7 is getting more love these days. It brought many iconic moments and queens who are still popular today. I would really love to see some of the less popular girls (Sasha, Kandy, Tempest) come back and do more stuff with WOW+ and the show!
One note during the snatch game ep though was Violet would have definitely played Donatella Versace like she intended to since Fame wasn't there. I think we would have seen a very different snatch game.
Season 7 was the first season where I remember thinking, "Holy shit, what are the judges / RuPaul thinking?" It's fun to see someone else agree with what I think should have happened.
Highlights for me are Jaidynn finally getting her flowers instead of getting ignored, Pearl leaving early (sorry), and Fame getting recognized.
Don’t remember where I heard it… but rumor was that Trixie was cut at the first opportunity because she was going to do Anne Frank for Snatch Game. Then she comes back the episode after it. Season was definitely highly rigged. Thanks for let’s us know how it really should have been.

I dont think so, if production didnt want her to do anne frank they probably would just say that she cant do it. Like they already did multiple times with other queens, it might be possible cause we dont know how the riggory brains of the producers worked at the time but i dont think its a plausible explanation.
I can’t recall where but Tricia actually said that production told her to not even think about bringing an Anne costume with her. Pretty much the precursor to Loosey as Jonbenet.

THANK YOU! I love Pearl, I truly do but I remember watching season 7 for the first time and how flabbergasted I was that she won that lipsync against Trixie. Well deserved justice for Tracie for sure.
It always seemed weird to me that it was such a comedy heavy season but then they seemed to do a complete 180 and chose the fashion queens with Violet taking the crown. They could have leaned far more into design and fashion challenges and it would have felt more organic.
I don’t want to live in a world without my queen Violet winning.

With that top 3, I really could see it going any which way. At this stage, fan support had started to matter, so I actually think either Violet or Trixie probably would have won over Ginger (considering Ginger's edit).
It does make me wonder though, had Trixie not got the robbed queen edit, would she have bounced back so strongly and become basically the most popular drag queen in the world next to Rupaul herself?

Not so sure about miss Tracy Martel being top three, but I have felt for eight years that Jaidynn deserved the win for her Bianca impression so thank you so much for validating that.
I wanted Ginger to win 8 yrs ago on S7. She did the best that season and in the finale. She's also surprisingly difficult to outperform in a lip sync. Plus I will also say RPDR USA is wasn't then & still isn't about letting a big girl win. I felt that's why she didn't win. Because all of the top 3 had unfavorable edits. Hell the top 4.
Just thought i’d add that in the untucked for Episode 1, Sasha was panicking as she didn’t know the words for Geronimo, so I could see Tempest beating her, but that’s just a minor quibble.
This is why they sniped Trixie out of the competition during the dance challenge, because they knew she would do good at the Hello Kitty ball. Like, it's a design challenge for a toy. Of course that's going to be good for her. I don't think she would have beat Violet, but it would have been great content.
Max did well on the Spoof challenge. There’s not much to imitate about Courtney. She did well with little to work with

Honestly I think Trixie does well in this snatch game because I think she does Dolly Parton. Her RuPaul impression really started on UNHhh when Katya kept gassing it up which obviously doesnt happen yet.
Idk about Trixie doing bad on s7 Snatch Game. Her as3 snatch game was so bad cuz she was coasting on "well people online think my Rupaul is funny" which S7 Trixie wouldn't have.
WILD to think about how Kandy Ho would be an iconic lip sync assassin that way. But it definitely is realistic

Not gonna lie I feel like since Pearl isn't getting the favouritism I don't think her and Trixie would win the conjoined twins. I mean they literally said that one (Trixie) looked way better than the other. So just for that, based on the looks and who was in the top I think the win would go to Violet and Max. So in that scenario Max would come back into the competition, more likely than not be in the top for the John Waters challenge and then get eliminated by Ginger in the dance challenge. I think Kandy and Violet would land in the bottom in that scenario and Violet is surprisingly not a bad lip syncer so I think Kandy would go home in that episode and Violet would still make top3.

Regarding Episode 5, I have this faint memory of an interview with Pearl where she talked about the challenge. Max barely got anything together and Pearl wrote a lot of it quite last minute when she came back (that's why she's the one saying most of it).
I could remember it wrong but it would make more sense to me. Pearl showed time and time again that she's funnier than people give her credit for, while Max hasn't been standing out for her comedy ever since.
Pushing Kandy Ho is definitely a choice.

Violet truly did well only 3 times in the season. She could have been low or bottom 2 easily in RuHollywood stories, Shakesqueer, Parodies, Despy Awards and John Waters. She’s a very underwhelming winner in my opinion who spends most of the season doing badly. Ginger did great for the whole season, only faltering at the makeover - even her dancing could have been safe but everyone did great that week so she was in the bottom.

I agree. I love Violet, she slayed and was a deserving winner but whenever Ginger didn’t lip-sync, she was almost always in the top or won the challenge. She slayed this season too and I’ve always saw her as an equally deserving winner!! 🐸👑

Regarding Trixie in Snatch Game, I've heard she would've done Dolly Parton, which she ended up doing on AS3 for the Divas challenge. I think here, it definitely would've been better than her RuPaul, which I heard was a last second back-up after she already did Dolly. So she may have more jokes prepared, but who knows how she would've done overall.
And I don't think I've heard anywhere who Kandy would've done for it, so I agree that she would've been in the bottom with MAX.

The only part about this I rigged season that I don’t like is that we wouldn’t get Pearl’s Big Ang for Snatch Game
What I love most about those unrigged videos is the surprise of who shockingly does well when it’s not rigged. Like with Mayhem on the season 10 unrigged (the actual winner of every season of drag race) and Scarlet on the season 11 unrigged. You and I are both not crazy Trixie stans, but I can totally see how Trixie makes the finale. And the fact that she does that with a better track record than Violet just f*cking eats😂

Unfortunately she gets screwed over by circumstances and just how the LSFYL structure works. She'll always have the one really bad flop week and she'll always end up getting demolished by a LS assassin, regardless of how universally better her track record may be compared to the other. Yeah, it probably is unfair but perahps this is an indication that the format should be changed a bit...

I honestly think if Pearl would have gone home at that point, feeling disappointed by Ru and picked on by the judges, the contestants and the production, she wouldnt have returned for the twin challenge, right? So that changes because she wouldnt be there in the following episodes
I Must say, given the season was comedy challenge heavy, most of those were actually good and funny and most importantly based on a unique concept that has not even been saturated.
The theatre was a mess but an iconic one, the awards were funny, the Ru Song parodies were fine, the Ginsberg challenge a cool concept, the John waters challenge innovative and snatch game is a given.
And even though there were more fashion queens, for the most part even they did exceptionally well.
I love season 7 and don’t understand the hate.

Let's be honest here Trixie would've gone hard for that Rupaul part in the Ru-Hollywood Stories episode

The more I see about the conjoined episode, the more I see how stacked against Jaidynn it was. Every other pairing looked somewhat similar in one way or another, but herself and Tempest are visually polar opposite.
2:00 First unrigging would be to call it a proper Ball. Because this was basically a full on Ball Challenge. They had two looks from home and one look they made in the workroom. This would also mean - they should have given us more screentime of girls actually making the looks and giving us their thought process as well.
9:10 Well i would change THE episode. It was not well written, production did not feel polished. RuPaul was mad af. Everything was wrong. I would rather have them scrap this and rewrite it with a better material. Lipsync song and runway category were a serve though.
17:40 I think this would still change some things. Because Pearl isn't as funny as Trixie can be with prewritten comedy acting challenges. She would probably elevate the team a little.
18:00 This is also a one that I would strongly disagree. I still think Katya and even Max actually brought really good elements to the challenge - and I think that ultimately Katya playing Merle in the Merle Challenge deserved the win.
18:50 With RuPaul I think all the girls missed the point of the challenge - that each story was told by different person. They just did cheap RuPaul. Where instead they should have gone the same route as Katya, Ginger and Max went - where its different type of RuPaul every time.
A nice respected but oblivious lady with Merle, BFF party animal with Michelle and a perfection that is full on evil with RuPaul's version (RuPaul when she portrays the persona of RuPaul for skits - often goes for that evil judge that only accept herself as the sole pinnacle of drag).
23:15 I think looking at what Trixie has showed on AS3 with how well she can construct stuff and sell it - and the fact that Pearl still had editorial eye to stuff. I think very much they would still win this. If anything the idea maybe even would be funnier and more original. And I get that this isn't AS3 Trixie. But you know - there was already a seed there.
24:40 I do wonder if unrigging wouldn't also include them being assigned even more fair pairings. Because you know they could have matched people more well when it comes to heights.
30:15 Violet killed the finale, so she probably would still win. But with Tracy there - I could see them crown the secondary fan fave. Especially as she probably would fit in the middle of young vs old, due to her good relations with Ginger at the end of the show. Showing a middle part to the season drama. She probably would also be the fan fave aside Katya there, especially as we would get more screen time and more opportunity to have that Katya and Trixie dynamic on camera.
I do think that story dynamics and how queens behaved or what they portrayed couldn't be unrigged. Surely their ideas could have been presented more properly and moments edited less. But ultimately the dismissal of younger queens would still cost Ginger the crown. As in my opinion the finale also should count into the scores and Violet again - won that.
I’ve been bugging you for months for this one Derek! Thank you SO much. This season was hella rigged for Pearl and I believe that is why it got so much hate. She wasn’t the most charismatic contestant the show has offered and she outstayed her welcome. Looking forward to your upcoming videos 💕
For the twins runway, how was Kandy in the top if in this case she would be the one doing the makeup and not Fame. I feel like they wouldn't look as good as they did.

Possible unpopular opinion, I think Trixie has the MAKINGS of a lip sync assassin. Because I really think she’s a good lip syncer. She just happened to be against people who were funnier, who were amazing dancers, she just got unlucky in that going against… well… amazing dancers or hilarious performers. And Pearl. Pearl was there 😊 Trixie going home against Pearl still makes me angry >_>
Casting so many fashion queens for the heavy comedy season is a choice!
