That’s ill, man. One of my favorite drum parts in their catalog. Just watched a video where Dave was playing Slayer requests to a small crowd... and NO ONE asked for this. Tragic.
I know Reign in Blood is great, but South of Heaven is my album, I was 12 in '88, and this is the one that got me hooked. South of Heaven into Silent Scream into Live Undead is where its at, end it with Mandatory Suicide, Ghosts of War and Spill the Blood. Lombardo's best and that Slayer edge, nothing touches it. Reign in Blood was a precursor, a definition of ability, unmatched speed and power. Seasons in the Abyss was the comfort of deliverance of established and polished fortitude. But South of Heaven was that peak of all that came before and all that would be after, all was laid out in sonic perfection; a bit everything but still fresh, hard, technical, and timeless. Love me some Slayer and I'm not even a drummer (vox/rhythm), but Dave is what always set them apart over and above, no question. Lombardo isn't just a machine, he's the prototype and the cast, he's the program.
What makes this hands down the best playing of this song is exactly how King described Lombardo, saying,” he’s like a train about to go off the tracks but just keeps it all together” totally awesome ❤❤❤❤❤
It's like...like watching someone paint Michael Angelo's Sistine Chapel from memory in exact detail while on crack. I keep coming back to this video...gets me pumped up!
I've watched this about a thousand times. Josh this is great. great slayer song and u do a class job of it. I used to play drums about 20 years ago I could never have played like this you a brilliant. happy Christmas!
That was fucking AWESOME!!! In my world I know talent when I see it and you've got it. One of my favorite songs by Slayer and you nailed it. Great fucking job! That was fun to watch
This and Ghosts of War are my two favorite Slayer songs! Stoked that you covered both of them, I have no idea how I didn't see them 'till now. You're the man, man.
I consider this the epitome of a classic of a fan playthrough on this song. I've always appreciated the drum track... and you KILLED it... Bravo!!! Even 4 years later, I still enjoy this video.
Dude...Dude..Duuuudee.....That was fucking amazing....both my daughter have watched this and ghost of war several times...I'm not a drummer but she is and she loves your Slayer videos. Thank you...I fly big planes for a living, thrown an 8oz ball for a short time living and trade the stock market successfully but what I've seen here absolutely obliterates any of those. A true talent and thank for inspiring my girl.
Well done! Could be you on the album, as far as I'm concerned. One of my favorite songs as a 15 year old, 25+- years ago. I remember my first concert, circa 1994, Slayer Divine Intervention tour, Auckland Town Hall, New zealand. Supported by Biohazard. Lots of memories. Lots of firsts that night. Thanks for the vid
first of all, I hereby pay my respect for the accuracy - I am quite convinced that even Dave is giving himself a little bit of freedom not to reflect everything perfectly during live performances and You nailed it exactly to the point. And to be very honest, your dynamics reminds me more of Paul, rather than Dave, but maybe it is just an an impression...
Woooow......greaaaat !!!!!!! ...my favourite song drums cover ...I play guitar , but I almost had a heart attack watching this . Congrats man ,you re a beast !!!!
This upload has almost ten years now, but man.... it's impressing!, the best song from my favorite band made for a person who knows how to do it well, obscure thrash metal in the fuckin' brutal way! (yes, I feel an obscure and dense vibe in this song... SLAYER WILL NEVER DIES!!)
Fucking beautiful, Josh. Bassdrum sound not always my favorite, but here and on one if the two 'Raining' it's perfect (i think the older one). Keep doing what you do, play live and with, you know... real people (some of whom are just as "awkward") and who knows... Hetfield and Trujillo still seem fit enough. I'd pay to hear that jam!! Fuck me this video was fun. I promise to download a bunch and ruin my ears just a little bit. Holy shit, God bless you man
i always loved the drums on south of heaven and especially in this song and behind the crooked cross. good stuff PS: Awesome job with those sticks. keep it up
josh. Great work man. I'm just going about getting my 10 yr old son into drumming and he's a major fan of slayer (I know!). So thanks so much. You'll be on heavy rotation in our house. Cheers R
rick budby Great to hear! He's starting at the same age as I did. We are also both motivated by SLAYER! I tried to buy Reign in Blood on cassette when I was in third grade and my Mom wasn't having it, so I went back and got South of Heaven. lol
That's it, my life is complete, someone has successfully nailed my favorite SLAYER song. You sir are my fav youtube drummer. *brofist*
Awesome dude! Brofist back at ya.
Well said 🥁
Well said buddy, I feel the same way. Well done Josh, well done 👏🏻
My favorite Slayer song too. That first Hanneman solo is why I play guitar. Dude, you killed it! Nice job!
could not agree more
Just got my first kit at age 42. I play guitar but always wanted to play drums. Thanks for the inspiration.
+Allen Thacker Awesome!
hows it going Allen now 2 years onward? :D
That is awesome, we're about the same age and I'd LOVE a set finally since I was like 10!

In the words of Cheech Marin holy sheep shit
Awesome !this never gets old
lombardo is a fucking beast. so are you. well done
Thanks
Holy Crap!!! That is beyond awesome!! 5 people evidently have "Thorazine, pumping thru their veins."
Five jealous douchebags giving this thumbs down? Fuck, that was phenomenal Josh. Damn near perfect, literally.
What makes this hands down the best playing of this song is exactly how King described Lombardo, saying,” he’s like a train about to go off the tracks but just keeps it all together” totally awesome ❤❤❤❤❤
Dave Lombardo is such a legend, my favorite drummer, second favorite is Josh Steffen ;)
Still my favorite Slayer album. Great cover, Dave is a madman and you got it all practically seamlessly, great work.
Dave Lombardo cannot be replicated, but he can ask you if he's sick for few days !! ^^
He got replaced :(
I personally feel this is the baddest track from SoH. With Araya's eerie scream and lombardo's fill ins.
Buddy Rich, John Bonham, Dave Lombardo, Danny Carey, Tim Alexander, and Josh Steffen, haha!
And Ginge Baker!!!!!!
Gene Hoglan
@@parisstrantz7400 buddy rich sucked. He couldn't even read sheet music.
and keith moon as well or vinnie paul
Neil Peart too!!

That was fucking AWESOME!!! In my world I know talent when I see it and you've got it. One of my favorite songs by Slayer and you nailed it. Great fucking job! That was fun to watch
To me the drums always stood out in this song, a lot of variation going on in there. Flawlessly executed, nice!
This and Ghosts of War are my two favorite Slayer songs! Stoked that you covered both of them, I have no idea how I didn't see them 'till now. You're the man, man.

Oh man. That was like watching Lombardo himself. SUBBED FOREVER, DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
Spot on as always.
I consider this the epitome of a classic of a fan playthrough on this song. I've always appreciated the drum track... and you KILLED it... Bravo!!! Even 4 years later, I still enjoy this video.

OMG!! great performance from one of my favorite songs. My respects to a great drummer
I always liked the drums on this song watching you play the drums makes it that much better
Well-done. You got the rolls down and crisp.
first of all, I hereby pay my respect for the accuracy - I am quite convinced that even Dave is giving himself a little bit of freedom not to reflect everything perfectly during live performances and You nailed it exactly to the point. No-one sounds like Dave. Even if I hit everything right, Dave is Dave.
