Vectric - 3D Shape in a dish

  • This video shows best practice for setting up 3D a shape in a dish. It covers the advanced technique of multiplying the 3D component to get it to sit correctly below the planar surface. In addition we look at text layout along a curve and using the distortion tools to get it to fit the design shape. For the toolpaths we show how to setup the material for a dished shape, finishing without roughing and VCarving projected onto the 3D surface.

    I am blown away by how much this video just taught me. Sure I knew of a few aspects with my own recent dabbling with VCARVE however, this video has included text, and text warping, and how to chamfer edges... things I was not familiar with at all. It is nice to see the many awesome functions of VCARVE included in a single tutorial. Especially the tool path side.

    At about 32:40 you explained the problem I was having. I was bringing into Aspire 9.517 a 3D Design & Make model of the moon in a dish. I DID put a vector around it, and did use a zero plane, but it would try to carve the whole workpiece because I was using Model Boundary. Selecting the vector and choosing Selected Vector and 0 offset worked. Thanks!

    What version of v carve pro are you using? I follow your video and when I went to cut in toolpaths it would not cut the rings. all it cut was the dish. I am using 9.015

  • @ChristcrossCrafts
    @ChristcrossCrafts 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm making rings with a convex round over radius on the inside. When using the finishing toolpath (offset), it wants to start at the bottom and cut up. Is there a way to change the order and start at the top and cut down? I would prefer not to use a roughing toolpath if possible. The finishing will work fine if I can change the order. Thanks!

    Is there a text file available with a “step-by-step” guide to this process? The video is so very good and presents so many great concepts, but, I get lost switching from Vectric to TH-cam, trying to remember what I’m supposed do. Might need to sit down and write out the entire video, myself. Thank You for all this vital information.

      Hey Jim, unfortunately we don't have a text file version of the tutorials. If it's of any use, you can get the transcript for the video via TH-cam if that's of interest to you? You'll have to bear in mind though that some words may not be the actual words that were said (TH-cam generally does a good job at subtitles, however there are some words that TH-cam just doesn't understand) Nevertheless we'll pass your comments onto our communications team :) Sorry that we couldn't be of anymore help, have a great day!

    Great video. I plan on making this for an upcoming wedding. I know the piece can be stained then the names carved and painted. Can the date be done this way also? Before the 3d carve? Thanks

    • @vectric
      @vectric  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Michael... Normally if the VCarving will be on any part of the 3D carve we do it after. I say normaly because it does sometimes depend on what you are doing. If the date will land on the flat area around the 3D dish... then it would make sense do it first or after. Not actualy seeing your file it is hard to give advice... but I think your on the right track.

    How do you set the tool path z height for the ring text after it’s been carved. As you know now the ring text is lower and not sure how to set the “Z” height. Where do I need to set “Z” from, do I still go off of the bottom right corner as that’s where it was set originally? Hope this makes sense…

    • @vectric
      @vectric  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello J... in the VCarve toolpath form make sure you choose "project toolpath onto 3D model"... it is located at the bottom of the form. This will do all the work for you.

    We're you inserted the 1" in the multiplier, what do you put in if you are working in mm?
    I am using 19 mm wood.
    I am having trouble with that.
    Thanks

    • @vectric
      @vectric  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gary, you would still use 1 as the value for the multiplier in mm. I hope this helps :)

    At the 15:00 why do you change the Dome Dish 60 in multiply to positive and the height from .375 to 1. Wouldn't the pixels on the outside edge still be zero height whether or not you change the height or additive mode? Thanks for the tutorial

    • @vectric
      @vectric  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Burton... thanks for the question. The "Multiply" combine mode is a tricky one to get your head around. When we use it in a situation like this we make sure we use a multi dish that is exactly the same positive shape as the dish but scaled to "1"... as you noted. That tapers the edges of the model so that if there are any bits of the model's edge that rise above the dish tuck them inside. It is important to mention that in some cases (because of the nature of the model) it won't make any real difference.
      "Wouldn't the pixels on the outside edge still be zero height whether or not you change the height or additive mode?"
      In this case, you are correct... but if you wanted to taper a scene into a dish then this is really important. In the scene case, bake a plane into the positive dish, scale it to 1 and then change it to a multiply component... magically everything outside the dish disappears!
      I hope something there helps.
