My name is Edward Davis. I am a Vertebrate Paleontologist for the University of Oregon, with positions in both the Earth Sciences Department and the Museum of Natural and Cultural History.
I will be mostly posting videos of my hobbies: making things out of leather, wood, or steel; fixing things like old shoes, fountain pens, wristwatches, and cars; and collecting things like knives, wristwatches, fountain pens, belt buckles, and tools.

Our trip to the 9th Annual Rat Rod Roundup in Glide, Oregon, July 12, 2024
มุมมอง 4522 หลายเดือนก่อน
Here are some of our favorite cars that were on display at the Rat Rod Roundup in Glide, Oregon, for this year's Graffiti Weekend. See beautiful trucks, cars, and even a bicycle. We saw Cadillacs, Studebakers, Chevrolets, Fords, Hudsons, a Datsun, and many ground-up custom Rat Rods. From kustom kars to tuners, there was something there for you.
Moonswatch unboxing: Mars and Uranus
มุมมอง 1513 หลายเดือนก่อน
Just got back from Switzerland, and in addition to chocolate and cheese, I got to enjoy their watches. Here, I unbox the two MoonSwatches I bought, Mars and Uranus. The MoonSwatch is a collaboration between Swatch and Omega to make affordable homages to the venerable Speedmaster, the watch that astronauts wore to the moon, so it's called the "Moonwatch". People seem to have strong opinions abou...
We bought a 1961 Citroen DS Station Wagon! Another classic car for us to restore!
มุมมอง 5043 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video, we just go over the state of our 1961 Citroen DS wagon (sometimes called a Break or a Safari), and discuss all of the projects we need to do to get the car in good running shape. Let us know what you think we should work on first! We are excited to add a new classic car to our stable, parking it next to the Jeep CJ5. Had to move the Jensen Healey to another location so we can wor...

Unboxing the new Out of Order 10th Anniversary Swiss GMT Automatic Watch! I got number 42!
มุมมอง 4269 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video, I unbox the new special edition Swiss GMT auto wristwatch that Out of Order has released for their 10th anniversary. This watch retails for 1000 euros! Because I visited their headquarters in the summer of 2022, I dared to ask Ricky, the founder, to let me buy watch number 42 out of 65, and he sold it to me! The watch comes in an excellent leather carrying case, with room for two...
My son and I learned how to crack a safe by drilling it!
มุมมอง 314ปีที่แล้ว
We bought a safe with no combination and learned how to drill it so we can read the combination off the disks in the lock. Got the safe from Bring Recycling: bringrecycling.org/ I know it's not a "real" safe, but it was a fun project and we learned a lot from it. I hope my viewers learn some things, too!

"Made in China"??? dude... not Birks!!
Wow I watched 2 videos of resoling these pair of shoes, both are very enjoyable. Also, your resoling skills are getting better and better. I would be happy to send you my Iron Rangers for resoling once they are worn.
Where would I buy just the heel for this?
You can order from the Oregon Leather Co., but you'll have to call on the phone- they don't have a web store
@@DrPronghorn thank you!
Those aftermarket gauges are the cluster. They will fail. BTW, MTS makes a nice stainless steel bezel for the speedo.
Do you have a recommendation of good gauges for the old Jeep speedo?
@@DrPronghorn for the original gauge cluster you have to find some originals that still work. I have purchased from Rudy's CJ before. The other option is a new cluster from Speedhut. They are modern servo style gauges.
This was really good to watch! You took a risk and it really worked out I think. Could've been worse. I'm not sure I would have tried this or not so I think you did great!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
BTW, the disbributor gear issue had nothing to do with not lubing the gear. AMC have to have a matched set (distributor and cam gear). You could of reused the original gear from your original distributor and been fine. Ask me how I know. I wiped one out in the 80's.
I've read that in a lot of places since I made this video. I guess I'm just the latest jeeper to make this mistake!
No Yellow Stiching Though, Kind Of Mid.
True, the yellow makes Docs pop.
Youre one of the few people I can see this working for. Good review and good luck on you watchmaking journey
I appreciate that! Thank you for watching!
👍
Thanks!
I added an aux bus bar under my dash, wired to batt ground, to ground my interior stuff. Also ran a relay for headlights. Found out how CJ electrical worked when I burned my fingers on a loose headlight switch
I should do that. The headlight switch is highly suspect
I take long shouldered bolts with the same threads to use as sliders to support the dash when doing this kind of stuff. It helps most of the time.
That's a great idea! Thank you!
Thanks I hope mine comes with one too can't wait to build it sweet
Good luck! Let me know how it comes out!
Appreciate you mate 🙌🍻
Thank you!
Thanks for the video, I want to redesign my birks and this is very helpful
I'm glad! Let me know how they turn out!
Where can I find that spacer ring the plastic insert
It came with my case, so I don't know where to get it separately.
Cual es el movimiento?
It's a seagull 1963 movement I bought on eBay. There's a good chance it's not authentic! 😅
Thank you for the video very informative. What kind of glue do you use can you please send name and brand also where to buy it . Thanks a lot
I only use Barge contact cement. I buy it from Oregon Leather Co (541-343-2563) but you can also get it from Amazon.
Thanks for the info. Where did you buy the rubber sole replacement sheet ?? Thank you so much.
I bought it from Oregon Leather Co. You have to call them on the phone to order. 541-343-2563
I like the info on using contact cement as glue.
Thank you, I'm glad it helps!
Where did you get those gauges?, i need it!
I just searched CJ5 gauges on Google and picked the best price!
Wow. Quick question do you feel the nails inside? I know you said would have cost nearly the same price as new boots, but what did the parts actually cost you. How they going three years on? Cheers Graham
I haven't been wearing these boots lately because I have been in more of a shoe and sandal mode. I don't feel the nails on any of the shoes I do, because the shoe anvil bends the tips.over, and they clench like rivets.
ive got the similar build. How did you get the case on so easily?
Beginners luck, maybe? It seemed to fit really well.
@@DrPronghorn what did you take off before putting it in?
Like a very popular watch, the 12h00 marker, once you see it, you can not unsee it.😂
Ha! Now I will see it forever! Thanks! 🤣
Hey i bought a similar build, the front case crystal didn't come pressed in and im struggling to do so with a crystal press and suggestions?
Sorry, I haven't used a real crystal press. On one build I used a regular bench vise and wrapped everything with soft leather to protect it from the metal vise jaws
@@DrPronghorn All good thanks for replying
@@DrPronghorn I ended up doing the same, a good crystal press will be needed or its not gonna work. bench vise worked
I'm a strong advocate for repurposing and recycling quality products rather than contributing to a disposable society. Nice to find others who appreciate the same viewpoint. Really enjoy your videos 😎👍
Thank you very much!
Do you use listed ebay or recently sold?
If I could find it, I used recently sold, so I could be sure someone actually paid the price.
The Coronagraph is super cool, like a barebones Speedmaster Regarding OOO, i cant speak to their watches, but they've been harassing me with their newsletter since i gave them my email, and no unsubscribe procedure seems to work. You mentioned elsewhere that you are eyeing higher end piece currently, whats on your mind specifically?
Higher end for me... I got the OOO 10th anniversary watch. I asked Ricci very nicely and got #42. th-cam.com/video/-Xq9tb1JKII/w-d-xo.htmlsi=osVRscJot06cHBQP
Really great. I'm going to contact you at Etsy. I hope you can do the kind of repairs I need.
Sounds good! I'll look for your message!
Nice to see these shoes come back to life! I've bought replacement soles but only need to change the insoles as they are super smelly and beyond cleaning. I'm guessing the heat gun will work to take them off, then I'll just need to glue the new one back on, what glue would you recommend for this?
I would still use Barge contact cement for that job.
Where r u located ? Thanks !
Eugene, Oregon!
You should mount your shoe anvil to a board with a lip that catches the front of your bench so you can clamp it easier and it won't turn
That's a great idea! Thank you!
These microbrands are fun, but way overpriced most of the time for the quality you're getting. Most of them have dropped in msrp since this vid. Also fun fact: NH35 movement is originally from Pulsar. It's technically not a Seiko movement.
Interesting. Good to know, thanks!
Superb craftsmanship for your first time.
Thank you very much!
great video. Thank you for pausing to explain the choke function
Glad it was helpful!
Good effort, good result.
Thank you! Cheers!
one of my favorite shoes.
Mine, too! I just re-soled them for the third time! Look for an upcoming video!
What glue did you use, please
I only use Barge contact cement now
Wow this is amazing
Thank you so much!
You arent supposed to touch the dial casue it may get scratches
Indeed. I made a lot of newb mistakes here
Man they came out looking great! I just took mine to get resoled. I’ll be getting them back next Tuesday! The cobbler just ask to do the job $50 dollars too!👌😎👍
Nice! Keep 'em on the road!
Were do you buy that pattern I need one
I got these from the Oregon Leather Co. in Eugene. If you call, you can mail order from them
@@DrPronghorn what's the ph number
If any is trying this at home use a heat gun the sole will come in one piece and you won't mess the cork of the shoes
I have a follow up video where I use the heat gun method. Now I use an oven to heat them to 200 degrees Fahrenheit and the soles usually come off easily. Sometimes they don't come off, even with the high heat. It must be the factory using different glues
Great video! You’ve inspired me to replace the Christy outsole on my White’s. What pliers are you using to pull the outsole off?
I use a pair of end-nippers that I bought at the Eugene flea market. Here are a comparable pair from Harbor Freight: www.harborfreight.com/10-in-heavy-duty-end-nipper-56477.html?campaignid=12192884362&adsetid=116489852825&product=56477&store=&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw4_K0BhBsEiwAfVVZ_2_tD9Fq5RMbwkvTADHCaNR5387iDQzPlZlQFAtmphGrn_gwGbSywBoCLqIQAvD_BwE
@@DrPronghorn Thanks!
Good job!
Thanks!
i know this is an old video,, what contact cement are you using? thanks and great job
Thank you! I use Barge brand contact cement for everything now
A great car! Congratulations! You will be aware by now that everything on the car is close to unique in design, and function. Be aware that structural rust is a major problem with many old DS. It would be wise to make a thorough inspection of the 'longerons', and underneath structure, before committing too much time or money into the car. It might be the case that the basic structure is too far gone to be sensibly salvaged. Check around the rear suspension mounting area. If this is compromised by rust, it is a major (and professional) job to recover. I've done a few restorations on Various DS and ID models. It can be a tough journey, but well worth the time, money and effort at the other end. Good luck.
We will look more carefully at these areas, but so far we have seen very little rust on this car
The Breaks were more ID19 than DS. Your dash is definitely ID19. Stalk on right is lights. Turn it to switch on the lights. Turn signals do not cancel automatically: pull lever toward you to cancel. Good luck!
That's great to know, thank you! We are still in the stage of learning so much about this car, every detail helps!
Thank you for offering service and including a price. I will reach when my soles need it. My cork is looking dry, hence the look up.
You can help them now by applying new latex to the cork, a bottle costs less than $10. I have to charge $60 for the resole service now, because my cost for materials has gone up. Thanks for your support!
How much is it!?
I think this tier is $400 a watch now...
