As a divorce survivor I implore everybody to get a pre-nup. Twenty-five years with a woman that I would have trusted with my life went out the window in the ugliness that is divorce. I am now much poorer but much wiser. Now, a pre-nup is an absolute requirement. And yes, I would consider getting married again ... if she signs the pre-nup.

I was once a romantic that felt A prenuptial agreement was a way of saying I can't trust you and I would never want my wife to think that. Now it's easy to see that people change. She couldn't be trusted and I'm divorced. I never divorced the woman I married. I divorced the woman she became. A prenup is a necessity in this day and age.

Truth. If we look at Sternberg's triangle, most marriages are not romantic love based on the part of the female, only commitment. So, it's rarely going to last and if it does it's just gender roles. It amazes me how many low value men go overseas to find a bride not realizing money can't buy love. Peace.

There was a packed classroom in Ozamiz. It lasted 3.5 hours.
The first speaker was a Priest, explaining the Church's view on marraige. Then 2 other speakers explained the Philippines views on marraige.
We ended up going to Aurora city hall to get married by the Mayor, because Ozamiz was booked solid and we were given lottery tickets to get a date.
The unexpected change to marry in Aurora, Del Sur was a pleasant surprise because my Filipina wife was born in Aurora.
I need to give a shout out to Marlene, the city hall manager, because the complexity of having a westerner marrying a Filipina in the Philippines was overwhelming with required documents.
    Thank- you Marlene.
The wedding ceremony was storybook like. I am so happy I married a province girl from Balas, a fishing village in Aurora.

In some parts of the US (eleven states), we have "common law marriage", where you're considered to be married if you held yourself out to the world as if you were husband and wife and cohabitated. According to my research, there is such a thing as "common law marriage" under Article 147 of the Family Code. In the future, I'd like to hear Gracey speak on common law marriage (how it arises and what the legal implications are).

I got married to a Filipina in her place and something that neither one of us knew is that apparently the foreigner spouse to be is supposed to get a Cenomar also. Some cities in the Philippines will not accept the affidavit from the U.S. Embassy. A Cenomar is simply a document from the Philippine Statistical Agency that neither party to the marriage has ever married in the Philippines before.

Hi Pea, I was married in the Philippines in 2017 and listening to Gracie there was 1 step that I didn't do. As a divorced UK man I completed the requirements at the UK embassy in Manila (birth certificate, 1st marriage certificate and divorce certificate, passport etc) to prove I wasn't married and was granted a certificate to state I was free to marry, but I didn't get a Cenomar from the National Statistics Office as it wasn't mentioned on the UK government website. We then attended a seminar as you described which as an older couple (I was 51 and my wife was 46) was funny / embarrassing with all the younger couples there looking at us as we already had children from previous partners, then we went to the local Barangay in Cavite and completed all the forms there including the 10 day wait for the forms to be processed and also completed all the requirements at the local church before the wedding. After the wedding we took the certificate from the church to the Barangay to process the licence which we have. My question is, is my marriage still legal without the Cenomar on my part (my wife had her Cenomar as she had not been previously married). If you could ask Gracie on my behalf it would be really appreciated. Keep up the good work on your channel, I always find the info you provide very useful and accurate.

Hi Pea my wife and were married both in the Philippines and at our church in the US. Getting married in the Philippines wasn't anything difficult to do just a learning process for all the requirements. Getting married at a Catholic church has it's own process. This all started out to get our son baptized which we started 3 months before he was born. We talked to the priest and he reocommended that my wife get baptized at the same time. The class for our sons baptism was a 4 hour seminar on a Saturday. My wifes had to attend RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) which took 6 months of weekly classes. Because my wife had been in country less than a year I attended the classes as well because she was still working on her English. Also before she could get baptized we had to get married in the church which was more classes and going on a weekend retreat at the seminary. This all took about 8 months. What made this even more interesting we started this after my wife spent her first six months going back to school to get her high school diploma. Her surprise was she was able to attend school while pregnant. Unlike her high school in the Philippines when the girls have to drop out.

  • @knarlisrocks
    @knarlisrocks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Also remember Pea, the validity of the pre-nup is ultimately limited by the laws of the legal jurisdiction where the marriage is dissolved. Some States (Community Property) look less favorably on pre-nups because of the disparity in wealth and assets between foreigner and Filipina the fact that your spouse had a lawyer to counsel her prior to executing the document the reality is the lawyer was paid by the husband and can therefore be consider more beholding to him than the wife. This is all dependent on the laws in place in the location where the divorce is filed and rarely those of where the marriage was because we both know the Philippines doesn't even have divorce. My recommendation, be kind, loving, and supportive to your Filipina spouse. Not every relationship will work out but ALWAYS get a province (strongly support Visaya) girl and if you do the three things I mentioned earlier even if it doesn't work out her pride will protect you from losing everything because she will have a better life thanks to you.

One word of advice to getting married in the Philippines. This goes out to everyone in the Philippines.
DO NOT EVER GET MARRIED in the Philippines.
Until the country joins literally the rest of the world and legalizes divorce, just live together or travel outside the country to marry so at least if things go bad, you might be able to get a tourist divorce in Guam.
The only way both the intractable Philippine government and the Catholic Church is forced to change if Filipinos en masse stop getting married at all or in the country.

Better late than never, but well worth the wait. Thanks Pea

You neglected to mention the long lead times needed to obtain certain documents. This is especially relevant when getting married on short notice. My filipina girlfriend and I got married in May 2024. To notarize an affidavit stating that I was eligible to get married, I had to wait SIX WEEKS for a notary appointment at the US consulate in Manila. Then, with all necessary documents in hand, the local civil registrar told us we had to wait 11 DAYS before receiving the marriage license. I nearly had to change my return flight to the US, but managed to have the wedding five days before departure. This was after waiting FIVE YEARS for my girlfriend to get her first marriage annulled. What a crazy country!
