I grow 3 rows of peppers in my 8x4 raised bed and comfortably grow 12-15 pepper plants. I think you could easily put another row of peppers in your raised bed. For tomatoes I will plant 5 indeterminate tomatoes in a single row in an 8x4 raised bed (single stem on string trellis) and 4 determinate tomatoes in a single row. I have found 4 determinate tomatoes will comfortably fill out that row. I could probably put in one more but then disease tends to hit them sooner due to lack of air circulation.

Thanks for sharing the knowledge. On your 8x4 bed with the 5 indeterminate tomatoes, do you plant anything on the sides of the bed? Or is it just the 5 tomatoes by themselves?

I live out in the country in central Alabama. I have a decent size garden with fourteen raised beds of varying sizes, three GreenStalk towers, three pots for spearmint and peppermint, a 10’x20’ inground herb garden, eighteen ten-gallon grow bags, a mound of straw for growing Wine Cap mushrooms, and a small orchard with eight fruit trees.
Three of my raised beds, 2’x8’ are used primarily for tomatoes and bunching onions. I am growing a mix of semi-determinant, indeterminant, and determinate tomatoes. I space them out two feet apart.
I’ve moved most of my peppers to GreenStalk towers. Each five-tier tower has thirty pockets. I am growing peppers in two of them (The Twin Towers of Peppers), so sixty plants in about four square feet of ground space. From my experience, they do as well in the towers as my raised beds, occupy less space so I can grow more in my raised beds, but need a little additional fertilization throughout the season.
The GreenStalks are definitely worth the investment, and can be used to grow a large variety of plants. I have a third tower that is a seven tier tower with forty-two pockets that are being used to grow Seascape Strawberries. Yeah, forty-two strawberry plants in two square feet of ground space.

I got a couple different sizes of raised beds, 4x4 and 4x12. I have cattle panels cut in half and placed vertical supported by t-posts just on one side of those beds (on the 12ft side of the big bed). I only plant 2 tomatoes in my 4x4 beds because that’s all it can handle. I even position them close to the edge. I always plant the cherry tomatoes on an outside edge because they are the plants that always grow crazy big. On my 4x12 bed I plant 3 tomatoes and then grow 2 Small Wonder spaghetti squash between them.
So the peppers are a whole other ball game…. Several years ago Gary from The Rusted Garden mentioned you could easily plant two peppers to a hole. So I started doing that. No issues and very prolific. Also plant 1 ft apart. I cut bamboo stakes in about 2ft lengths and put 3 around the plant to help support them. Now I just go ahead and put two seeds per cell when I start my plants and let them both grow together in the same cell until I’m ready to plant out. As long as they are fed enough they will grow just fine. I always throw in a bit of Epsoma vegetable tone in the planting hole and then maybe 3 more times during the summer, usually the 1st and 2nd application is about 1 month apart. Occasionally some fish fertilizer. I emphasize on fertilizing heavy at planting and the first few weeks and back off. I learned that they only needed the heavy fertilizer until they get established and putting in that first round of fruit to prevent any blossom end rot. If the first round is good then I’m good the rest of the season and can start backing off. Not quite scientific, but I figured out that’s works for me. No drip tape here, all hand watering 😊

With the intense power of the sun nowadays I crowd my tomatoes more than in years past so they tend to shade each other I do keep the bottom of the plants open for good ventilation and had a very good result last year. With the changes in the intensity of the sun we will have to learn to adapt and accept the fact that things are different now and it’s time to experiment and adapt to harsher conditions that we will continue to experience. I really enjoy your content and I have learned a lot from your work. Thanks

In my 10x2.5’ bed I grow 10 indeterminate tomatoes that I grow mostly single stem up a string, with a cattle panel trellis behind it for support of those additional stems that I miss, 8-10 peppers along the squares in front of the tomatoes, Marigolds along the front of the whole bed and in between in plant in some basil, rosemary, thyme and bush beans. And they grow most happily between early May thru the end of October and some into early November. I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia and grow in my backyard and water with a watering can from my rain barrel or with my hose.

Depends on whether it's for serious harvest or fresh eating! 12" staggered pattern or allow 18" per plant for tomatoes and peppers. Eggplant do well @ 18". Found one plant per 10 gal or greater container, can push 5 gal buckets with daily watering with good results. I like easy work

For a 4x6 if I were only doing tomatoes I’d only plant 6 determinate in with basil along the bottom. With indeterminate I’d squeeze 12 tomatoes in with basil on the bottom with a trellis system that is at least 10 feet over head and string them straight up on twine pruned down to only one vine or six with the same trellis system and 2 vine pruning on each tomato.

I'm amazed by how small your tomato seedling containers are. I've been in the habit of germinating my tomatoes in containers that size, but I always step them up to larger pots. It never occurred to me that I could plant my seedlings outside directly from those smaller containers (assuming they don't get too leggy). Considering that my raised beds are covered (with automated covers) this will be much more convenient and less work for me. Good tip.
I've never paid too much attention to spacing of these plants. I just try to imagine how they look at maturity and space them appropriately. I'd estimate that I space peppers and indeterminate tomatoes about 1 foot apart. Determinate tomatoes, maybe a little further apart.

I have 8×4 raised beds. I put 32 plants in one bed no cages no trelliseing. I space my peppers 1ft a part on center. My tomatoes I put 10 plants in an 8x4 raised bed. I use 2 cattle panels(Jess from roots and refuge style) and space them 18in on center. I plant carrots down the middle at the same time. They get enough sunlight to grow but enough shade to keep them cool enough to keep them happy during the warmer weather. Also ring the bed with onions and a basil plant or 2.

We plant 6 indeterminate's in one 4x8' bed.
3 down each side starting 1' in and spaced
2' apart. Works perfectly, spacing wise, using
    2x2' homemade cages.
With peppers we set 12 plants in a framed 2x8'
raised rows. 6 up one side, started 6" in,1' apart.
Then 6 start from the other end the same way,
6" in and 1' apart. By doing it this way the rows
    are staggered side to side.
Sounds crowded but we still harvest about 3,
1gal ziplocks chopped to freeze. The cheapo
wire cages also fit and work perfectly. 1 on each.
plant zip tied together at the tops. Makes the
whole rows extremely ridged an supportive.

I follow the square foot method and would put 24 peppers in a 4x6 bed and have had lots of luck with this method. However, I do usually mix up what I have in each bed due to limited space in my backyard. I have multiple raised beds of different sizes, but the ones most similar to yours are 3x6 and last year I grew 3 mini watermelon/cantaloupe on the 3 squares on the north side, up a trellis, then 9 peppers in the next 9 squares, 2 squares of 20-ish carrots (should be 16, but I’m terrible at thinning), 2 squares of 5 celery and 2 squares of 5 lettuce and in between I placed Marigolds and Nasturtiums. On the other 3x6, I grew 6 cucumber up a trellis on the north 3 squares, 11 peppers in the next 11 squares with a straight neck yellow squash in the 12th square and 2 eggplants and 1 zucchini in the last row of 3 squares. I also added Marigolds and Nasturtiums to that bed. The squash and zucchini were staked to grow upwards. All of the peppers and eggplants are staked with a bamboo pole. Eggplants, squash and zucchini are placed on the outside squares so they can have more room to spread outwards and/or over the side.

Hey Travis try to keep track of your CO2 levels outdoors to see they depreciate ( from early in the year till June ) in the same way your indeterminate tomatoes do... the hotter and sunnier it gets the more CO2 they'll need.. and if your area doesn't have an appropriate amount could be the reason they tend to die off before they can produce.

Im using extra grow bags and individual pots around this year...but I'm worried about getting water to them. Any suggestions?

You could easily set up a drip system for those pots, assuming they were in a linear row.

I see a few people using agrothrive fruit and flower right from the beginning instead of the all purpose agrothrive which is more geared toward initial growth. Is there a reason for this? Thanks

They're pretty similar. I have both on hand at all times, but sometimes I just use what's in the back of my buggy.

HEY Trav, Do you have any extra seedless watermelon seedlings you want to part with? I ordered 2 varieties (25) total seeds and had 8 pollinators. Been 3 wks, all 8 pollinators came up, none of the seedless. not sure where i went wrong.

I haven't even planted mine yet, but I probably won't. I think I started just about enough for my entire 30x35' plot this year.
