Composer Michael Giacchino Talks Incredibles 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Goes Comic Book Shopping

- In a new episode of Comic Book Shopping, we’re joined by Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino, the man behind the music of films like Up, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. If you like comics and celebrity interviews, this is your show. Each week we’re joined by a new guest, who hits up a local comic book shop with host Jon Schnepp and peruses the wares while also discussing their career, upcoming projects, and of course their favorite comic books.
Giacchino and Schnepp visit Earth 2 comics shop in Sherman Oaks and engage in a wide-ranging conversation that begins with Giacchino’s work in video games, and how his score for The Lost World: Jurassic Park game on PlayStation 2 led to his first meeting with Steven Spielberg and launched his career. Giacchino also discusses the four-and-a-half-week time crunch on scoring Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and his lifelong love for Star Wars (including a great story about a Kenner toy). He talks about his cameo as a stormtrooper in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and how he learned it’s impossible to frisk someone in a stormtrooper outfit.
The composer also discusses how his love of comic books influenced his work on The Incredibles with Brad Bird and offers a tease of The Incredibles 2 while admitting he wasn't initially sold on the idea of doing a sequel to the Pixar classic. He also talks about his work with Marvel Studios and how Kevin Feige sold him on when audiences should hear the theme in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Update…this man created one of the best soundtrack of all time imo with The Batman

Didn't realize Giacchino had a pretty cool "career story". Cant believe I never thought about: if you'd like a certain specific gig, shoot for a producer position--then hire yourself! Genius move. If I ever manage to pull that off, then I'll credit Giacchino for the idea when I'm ever a guest on Comic Book Shopping talking about my career story. (jk) Also, pretty cool that he did one of the first (if not the first) live orchestra scores in a video game. Btw, Schnepp & Tzeng & crew: great guest and great episode
Wait, what. Incredibles was the first Film music he has ever written. That's insane. This is one of the best scores ever made (in my opinion)
10:10 sees Batman Long Halloween comic, The Batman 2021 heavily inspired by Long Halloween, Michael Giacchino does the score for The Batman, "Coincidence, I think not"
I'm always surprised by the awesome guests you guys get
Michael Giacchino is legit the movie composer for Geeks.
His score for the Incredibles was practically a character. It fit and sounded so well with the Superhero theme for the movie. And loved his score for Spiderman: Homecoming, Doctor Strange and especially War for the Planet of the Apes. Saw aspects from Dawn, the original Planet of the Apes and even a little X-Men Days of Future past (which I know he did not compose, but still reminded me of it)
Sal Scalici the one for Homecoming was terrible and forgettable.
I have never read a single comic book. But i watch this show every week just for the guests. So epic

Matthew Jund why not start reading? Just pick something up that schnepp recommends and start getting into comics! You can always stop if you don't like it and if you do like it you can become a sweaty! One of us! One of us!
You should dude! DC and Marvel both have tons of standalone stories that don't necessarily connect to the universe, so you don't have to feel overwhelmed and just read a single story.
Plus, there's tons of other great stories from different publishers. I always tell anyone who is a fan of stories that they're doing a huge disservice to themselves by not reading comics.
If you're not into the whole conventional Marvel/DC superhero thing, try anything by Valiant, Image, BOOM! Studios, Aftershock, IDW, DYNAMITE, and Dark Horse! They publish both superhero and non-superhero titles, so there's a comic book for everyone!

Michael's score to the Incredibles is one of my all-time favorite movie scores. The music to the scene where Dash runs on water just blows me away every time.
The Incredibles score is so similar to the early James Bond movie scores! It's awesome but I always think I'm hearing the Incredibles score in a Sean Connery movie! :D
Far from home OST is just perfect.
Then No Way Home is beyond perfect.
This is awesome. He did the score for the entire run of LOST, which is, imo, the best scored tv show of all time, a major part of the reason its my favorite show of all time. This series is great.

Michael Giacchino's LOST score will always be one of the most beautifully haunting scores in any medium.

This show has me way more open to walking into a comic book store and buying something, whereas before comic shops seemed like worlds that are off-limits to anyone who isn't a super-Sweaty. Thanks, Schnepp and everybody who makes the show as well as the guests. I love seeing people talk about their talents and appreciating the talents of others.

Doctor Strange has one of the best scores ever, no question.
I love how this series has evolved into a device to enable the viewer to learn about the industry people who are into comics as much as discovering new comic books.
My favourite guest so far. Not that the others were bad, I just liked Michael better.

I'm always really impressed with this show each week. Every guest is super interesting and it's just a lot of fun to see what Schnepp recommends for different people.
Idc what anyone says, his score for War for the planet of the apes has to be nominated for an oscar - it's timeless and adds soo much gravitas to the film.
I don't know how you guys keep doing it week after week! If I'm being really honest, when I saw who the guest was this week, I thought "I'm sure it will be fine but I wonder who will be on there next week?" Man, was I wrong! Michael Giacchino is freaking awesome! How many people can say that they're living their dream.
This series continues to impress me with every episode. Can't say enough about how excited you make me to go comix shopping -- as if I needed for incentive. Using celebrities to help the comix industry is using your powers of influence for the good of something I love. So, thanks.
This is probably the most well-made show on Collider and it has a lot of potential, so this is why I'm going to allow myself to do this small criticism, this episode felt more like an interview for the first part since the comic book picking started more than midway through (6:40), I don't know if it's because of how the conversation went down, or editing choices but it's just my 2 cents, the best part is definitely the comic book shopping and it's awesome that you are able to get those guests.

It's amazing that he only had a month to compose his Rogue One score. It's really unique and stands out as one of the most intriguing Star Wars soundtracks.

He's one of favorite composers. I first took notice of him because of LOST. He had amazing themes for many of the characters.
Michael is awesome. I absolutely love most of his scores and those I don't love I really like, especially his score for War for the Planet of the Apes was amazing. CBS is such an entertaining show.
He is one of my top five favorite composers of all time. So happy to see him on here!

These episodes are far too short. On a previous episode I commented that this was the best thing being uploaded on Collider. I now change that statement to say this is the best series on TH-cam.

Michael is an awesome composer!
My favorite of his is Star Trek (2009), a film that I saw in theaters an absurd number of times. The scene where the tiny Vulcan ship is heading straight towards the Narada always gives me chills.
Vulcan ship: Incoming missiles. If the ship is hit, the red matter will be ignited.
Spock: Understood
(Narada firing at the ship, a grand operatic song plays in the background)
Romulan crewmember: Captain, we've picked up another ship!
(Enterprise drops out of warp, firing indiscriminately at the jellyfish, to a strong and triumphant sound)

Honestly, people don't talk about the score to Incredibles enough. I think the score is a HUGE reason why that movie is so good and fun. This man is a legend.

Idk.. I'm a fan of Giacchino, but not all his scores are that memorable. Only ones that stick out, to me, are Spidey, Incredibles, and Inside Out. Mind you, those are fantastic scores for sure, but he's worked on A LOT of stuff.
Unless he's got something truly amazing up his sleeve, he wouldn't be my first choice. But I will say that his heart and mind are in the right place. He knows these characters deserve real scores.
Batman deserves an amazing score. We got one with 89 and TDK trilogy. Look up the score from Batman: Mask of The Phantasm. That shit is god-like! That's what we need IMO.

This is prob my favorite episode of Comic Book shopping not the Frank Miller episode. I thought this series would be lame but I was wrong, cool to see successful comic people talk about things they love. Love the checkout at the end too.
