Does Shaedon Sharpe Really Have a 49 Inch Vertical?? Is Anybody in the NBA Even Close to That?

- The point of this video is to bring attention to how easy it is for people to believe vertical tests coming from a few sources that catch traction and are repeated enough to become fact, in addition to how easily vertical can be manipulated. For example, Zach LaVine can jump noticeably higher than Michael Jordan, even though Jordan’s was “measured” at a 48 and LaVine’s is alleged to be a 46 (which is believable based on the level of dunks he can do). People speak about Jordan’s vertical like it’s undoubtedly true, despite the fact that records were poorly kept back then and comparisons to similar players demonstrate how they jump much higher but have a “lower” vertical.
I learned this when I went to a gym near me and tested a 48 inch vert, just for a bunch of dunkers to comment on my videos that they could tell from eye test alone that was false. And they were right. To this day, my trainer claims everything was right about this test, but it was clear something somewhere went awry. As sports fans we need to learn from my story and other similar ones like Keon Johnson and Shaedon Sharpe, in order to be skeptical of players alleged verticals. Comparisons to other players and head height relative to the rim can be very useful tools for this. Thanks for watching, and let me know any suggestions you might have for other videos.
Yea I agree, Isaiah Rivera has an arguable 49-50 inch vert and he's 6 foot 3 AND gets his head above the rim consistently, literally chest to the rim damn near - Shaedon is 6'6 and does have hops for sure, but 45" is more likely.
isaiah is 6’2 with a 50.5 inch TESTED vert. He tested 50 AND 50.5 inch verts separately
Maybe, but why would you ever jump max height on a dunk if you just fly over the rim? He had one help side block where you get to see the full potential of his vert, it's a better benchmark.
Shaedon is 6’4.25 without shoes so they’re like similar height
Problem is Isaiah looks like he's going full power while Shaedon looks like he's hopping around...
There's a tweet somewhere with his chin above the rim.
When comparing wingspans you also need to account for shoulder width. A more accurate way is to measure arm length.
For sure. The difference would be minimal, but a difference is a difference nonetheless
@@ben_wolfe8nah some guys the same height could have a few inches diffference in shoulder width
@@jeremy-pj1zx Speaking of shoulders....Sharpe has a strong set and he's learning how to use them to put defenders off balance. Crazy how high his ceiling is as a scorer.
Guess that's one of the reasons Zion is so good at dunking having a super wide frame
Not just shoulder width but shoulder height. People can be the same height because of a big neck/head
I had a 45-46 in H.S. and I'm 5'9. Man, once you hit them mid 30s your bunnies go back in the hole to never be seen again. 😂
@@jakew1362 EXACTLY Lmfao I'm glad I still have the rabbit speed but definite hibernation. 😂
It's up to you if you want to keep it that way. You can work on yourself to be better than you ever were in high school or at any other point in your life. It's up to you to put in the work or you can sit and laugh on TH-cam about how you'll never be that good again. No way should your high school years be your best effort. Come on now. I'm going to be faster, stronger, healthier and more explosive than I ever was in school at 35 and beyond (birthday next month) so let's get it.
@@gmaxsfoodfitness3035 I'm down! I seen some dudes I grew up with and they look 60 years old! I was far from being literal about it being hibernation even though that's hilarious Lol All jokes aside it's pretty sad though how I never knew anything about the tibialis muscle until few weeks ago in regard to knee stability and jumping. I've been attacking that muscle this past few weeks (About week 7 so far) and already I have no shin splints when I run and can-do lateral movements without knee pain. Jumping is also not too bad. I highly doubt it will be the mid 40's but I feel like if I keep doing what I'm doing I can keep it close to 25-35. My game is mostly all handle, passing, and efficient shooting. I try to play college level competition because my talent never left. I have a weird pet peeve playing people who are not there yet unless I'm helping em' out. A lot of bum players who talk trash an area ass I try to stay away from. I have that kind of Tim Duncan mentals. I just let my game speak for itself.
This is facts! I am 34, me and my identical twin both still hoop. The athleticism is still there, but it's definitely different! Not many tomahawks these days
@@dorianrichardson3339 I can do a mean eastbay...Oop to myself off backboard and catch it or toss it up....and finish as a....LAYUP. 🤣
Hey have you/could you make a video on everything required to jump higher also have you ever tried the vyktry insoles what do you think of them if not could you make a video on your opinion and usage of them?
High jumpers jump higher than them all, shot out to all my fellow high jumper cuz
All Blazers fans or we really do know and knew when he got drafted that he was special. It’s nice to see him get minutes at the 2 vs the 3.
Best vert test is head height, like hitting the hanging bottle that's measured accurately. Or when players get their head very close to the rim and you see how much over they get to nearest inch.
there are various other factors that go into standing reach; such as shoulder width, how high your shoulders are on your body, etc
Nba verticals are standing verticals (meaning you cannot step into your jump). someone with a 45 inch standing vertical is easily in the 50s with a running vertical.
This is not true. They measure both and I’m going off of their max verticals. Pull up the draft combine from that year or any year, this is so easily verifiable.
Max touch minus reach could hardly be accurate but that’s the mainstream and what nba combine does. The most accurate way to test vert should be off a force plate
Damn he went in on that. I learned a lot!
Not a hate comment, just friendly criticism - your depth jump form is incorrect, you knee to land flat footed as the point of the exercise is to train the stretch reflex.
I’ve had turf toe before which happens from bad dorsiflexion so that’s definitely true. I’ll keep that in mind going forward
Thanks for posting this! Yes, I have questions. What ARE the rules for getting a "true" measure of a vertical? Who makes these rules? And a comment: It seems like there would be a more accurate way to measure than flipping those tabs with your finger. As you alluded to, people have different arm lengths, and different shoulder widths. A broad-shouldered person could stand straight up with their arm straight in the air, but just not tilt their shoulder when getting the base measurement and who would notice? Can something be worn around the waist, or as a head band? P.S. That shot of Darius Clark was amazing!!
Do a video on Young Jordan's vert. His college coaches also claimed he ran a 4.4 40 yard dash.
Can you post some jumping workout routine that you do? Weights lifting and polymeric workout routine

Bro I have a question for you. I haven't dunked in maybe 3 years since I haven't been on a court since covid. I'm 26 now and haven't really trained much at all in these 3 years. I'm still healthy and fit, but just haven't been lifting or playing ball whatsoever. If I ramp it back up, can I still go back to banging out as well as I could a few years ago? Or am I exiting my "prime"? I know nba players' primes can last until their early thirties due to how many resources they have to take care of their bodies, unlike a normal 9-5 person like me and most people.
I'm 6'2" in shoes with a neutral wingspan, could palm a ball, dunk off of either leg or both legs, or with either hand or both hands. But I couldn't get any higher to do anything else.
For context, my finger almost grazed the rim at the park a few months ago. No warm up and in jeans, but still. It felt really weird to not even be able to grab rim. I'm really just curious how well vertical comes back to you in the second half of your 20's. I know this wouldn't really apply to you, since you've been constantly training, but maybe you still know the answer since you have a lot of experience. Thanks for all the content bro
If you’re 26 and you’ve done it before you def can get back to it and good luck doing so. Muscle memory is a crazy thing even after all that time, meaning it will take work but your gains will be faster
You really should be doing a vid on does Michael Jordan really have a 48 inch vert because that nigga was not jumping like this😂
If your max vert is 44" it's pretty bold to say Shaedon's is most likely 45" and not 49. One thing is undeniable tho, his in-game dunks are up there with Vince Carters.
With that being said, the NBA needs a better way to measure. If u give ppl an opportunity to cheat theyre gonna take it. Cough Pat Connaughton cough. Lol. Nah I'm kidding. I shouldn't single PC out cause hundreds of guys have cheated throughout the years.
Nice vid! Does intensity matter when it comes to increasing vert?
It definitely does. Some of the training needs to be at the high intensity needed to explode off the ground but don't do this every time and make sure to rest and recover properly.
Train fast twitch muscle and train isometric movements
Jumping is a explosive movement so try to do your exercises with that same explosive energy but be cautious to not injure yourself
Respect 💪🏾🇺🇲
I saw a non pro basketball player who was 5’6 and could get his head to the middle of the backboard and could touch the top of the backboard he’s gotta have over a 50 inch vert
im not sure how to measure my (running) vert. im estimating its about 28 inches. im 95kg (209lb), 6'2", and I've been training plyometrics/jump technique for about a month. does this sound reasonable or is it too high? for reference, my standing vert is ~7'6". when I do approach jumps at a 10 foot rim im less than 2 inches from touching rim.
you need a 24 inch vert give or take an inch for your height to be able to touch 10ft, so your probably more around 21-22 inches
@@cynoau3989 if you do basic calculations it would take 30 inches to touch a 10 foot rim, i think the 28 inch vert is accurate
Ja Morant’s trainer stated Ja has a 47 Inch Vertical on video in an interview with him and Ja
Link and time stamp: 33:14 in the interview mo wells, ja’s trainer says it.
th-cam.com/video/SMi5p7W-BNo/w-d-xo.html
Ja is a weak 6’3 (6’2 barefoot) and has caught windmill oops in game and has his head at the rim on lobs. Compared to a 6’5/6’6 shaedon sharpe.
Also factor, this was a year ago so Ja’s vertical may be even higher by an inch or something due to a year of training.
I am a 44 year old Asian dude. I am 5foot9, 44 years old (in 2023) and channel like Ben's inspire me. My goal is touch a 10 foot rim by the end of 2024.
44? I'll save you the suspense: it's not the going up at that age. It's the coming down.
Yea ur not going to be able to touch a 20 inch one maybe, sorry bucko 😂
@@theoneabovethou9601 it's possible. I mean I'm 6'5" and last I played horse with some friends, my wrist still touched the rim (it used to be my elbow and with these arms, you know that's long drop off). But my ankles and knees hated me when I landed so I stopped those shenanigans. I'm 48. I still get nightmares thinking of a 39yo Michael Jordan draining black blood from his knees in DC.
@@JamusChristus Yea I learned that the hard way. lol
Luckily I found Kneesovertoes Guy and have been working on knee protection since 2021.
I went to get my vertical measured at several dunk camps, but they all told me that they couldn't measure verts below 2 inches. :-(
Never forget Kadour Ziani
Where the Wilt video at?
i need that workout routine
I’m 6’5” and could touch 11’6” with a 37” vertical. 45 inches is remarkable, 49” is so rare you’ll probably never witness it in your life.
The fact a samaller wingspan does not mean you have a smaller reach. It might be because some people don´t have a wide back, but they sure have long arms.
Darrell Griffith had a real 48 inch vertical. In those days, there was no step. Squat and jump, 48 inches. Russell and Wilt both had about 42 inches.
He is 6'6 and seems to be able to hit his head on the rim, so can Zion and he is the same hight, so he probably has a 45" vert, wich is still very impressive.
He 6’4.25 without shoes
daaawg how you 5'8 white dunker that's gangsta i want to get to that level too
Havent finished the video yet but to tell you how his standing reach could be so much more even tho wingspan is close could be due to shoulder width. Just a possibility, or he just cheating the system lol
49 inch vert at 6'5 means seeing the floor.... Through the bottom of the net.
Also, whats ur wingspan? Im also 5'8
Not sure but my max reach is 7’4.75”
@@ben_wolfe8 mm alright. Does intensity matter when it comes to increasing vert?
Im not saying he has a 49 inch vert however you do have to realis that in game you rarely ever use your maximum vert
I mean wilt was 7ft3 with a 13ft3 max wing span and a 44 inch vertical
Look up Kao’s dunk session with dunkademics. He’s 6’10 with a 47 inch vert doing stuff that made wilt look unathletic. Wilt maybe has a vert in the mid to high 30’s based on his max effort jumps. I get it that’s the claim of him having a 48 has been repeated so many times that it’s taken as fact but wilt was a hall of fame embellisher. Someone found proof that he lied about his track times as well by searching the PIAA track archives. Don’t believe everything you hear just because an amazing athlete said it. They can lie too
He is HIM
4 minutes is “long form content”??
why would you say dac has the record when Isaiah has it too
Isaiah is more recent. DAC did it last year if I'm not mistaken while Isaiah just put his video out about it in the last week or two. Also I think one of them might be higher by a half an inch or so but I'd have to go back and watch DAC's video again (watched it last year).
Just cuz Dac did it with guiness lol. I definitely believe Isaiah’s is 50+
@@ben_wolfe8 I saw a thumbnail showing DAC and Guinness some hours ago. I didn't know he did it with them at some point. The video I saw of him getting a record vert last year was at Dunk Camp.
@@ben_wolfe8 I think Dac measured standing vert with Guinness while Isaiah's was a running max vert at Dunk Camp this year. Dac may have a higher standing vert than Isaiah.
Jericho s'ils?
4 minutes isn't really long form content. This uses to be short. 🤣 Good video though man.
This is long for me as a tik tok/yt shorts guy just let me have it 😂😂
No way
I have an 8 inch horizontal
🎉🎉🎉🎉
I dunked once.
i can confirm he can touch the 🌕
The world record for vert is 63 not 50 something
Nobody will ever be close to that. Years ago on google you could find that answer, and Kadour Ziani was even rumored to have a 56. But Jordan Southerland is a one foot jumper who jumps higher than him and has a 49-50 so that’s likely not true. Most articles that describe a 63-inch vertical are talking about Max Unger’s 63.5” box jump. Which is a box jump, not a vertical. For reference, I have a 70 inch running box jump and only a 46.5” vertical
Jordan never was 48 inch off the ground from his own jump
If this is true, then he can jump higher than David "Skywalker" Thompson.
*makes video titled Shaedon Sharpe*
*talks mostly about self*
lol I started talking about myself at 1:28 and am done by 2:20 (to connect it back to the video). That’s 52 seconds, or 19.9% of the video. So not mostly
Shaedon... wtf is this name? 🤣
Who cares, watch him do a layup when he rises over everyone
