Why NBA players are such impressive jumpers (even if their verticals aren’t as high as you think)
มุมมอง 1.9Kหลายเดือนก่อน
There is a lot of misinformation regarding NBA players’ verticals that I have pointed out in the past. Even if their max verticals aren’t as high as some sources claim, they are still extremely impressive jumpers for this particular reason. Max vertical is not the end-all-be-all when it comes to evaluating an athlete’s jumping ability, and this particular reason is why, and it actually favors N...

    You’re just wrong and a victim of bias. At UNC, and at the age of 20, he was recorded in a physics study as having a vertical of 45.6. Track and field stats usually reach their peak until 25. The Jordan hate is just too much.

    • @ben_wolfe8
      @ben_wolfe8 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Then link the study. According to the lore that caused this bullshit claim (the book written by his trainer) Jordan had a 39 inch vertical in college, a 43 after 3 years in the league and a 48 in 1990-91. So even the original source contradicts that. It’s not Jordan hate btw, it’s truth preservation. You dick ride Jordan too much to understand that Idgaf who your goat is I just wanna disprove false claims bc they’re false.

      “So are there any official records of Michael Jordan's vertical jump height? It turns out that the only official records of Michael Jordan’s vertical jump were the measurements taken during his college years at North Carolina. In these tests he reached a max running jump of 45.5 inches and achieved 42″ vertical jump height from a standard Sargent Test.” Source: Vertical Jump World “We could not find any records of Michael Jordan’s measurements. We can however go back to his University of North Carolina vertical jump record. You can also learn a few things. Michael Jordan reached a maximum height jump of 45.5 inches. His vertical jump record was 42 inches in the Sargent standard test. Michael Jordan’s vertical leaping ability has been perfected over a period of training.” Source Scott Fujita Since I’m sure you’ll call BS on these guys, you can call UNC and order a hard copy of the study. It’s from 1983 and doesn’t seem to be available online.

      @@Viper_75th_RR I've heard people say a lot that Michael Jordan had a 48" vertical, but I've never seen any actual credible source to confirm it. I've also read that his vertical was measured at 43.5", the same as Vince Carter and Nate Robinson, which sounds much more realistic but I don't have an actual source for either (it was just in a list that seemed very convincing). So let's do this. I read once that Michael Jordan in practice was able to get his entire hand over the square on top of the backboard. Obviously it's an anecdote, but we actually have more than enough information to know how high Jordan would need to jump to do that. The following is all available through Google searching. Michael Jordan's height without shoes - 6'4.75" - 6'5". Michael Jordan's wingspan - 6'11.5". According to Pre-Draft Camp numbers, pretty much every guy who is 6'4.75" to 6'5" with a 6'11" to 7-foot wingspan has a standing reach of 8'7" to 8'9". So we'll say that Jordan's standing reach was 8'8". Michael Jordan's measured hand length - 9.75", per google. Height of the square on top of the backboard - 11'6" (10-foot to the rim, 18-inches to the top of the square itself) This means that putting his hand over the top of the backboard meant that he got the base of his hand (which was 7'10.25" subtracting his hand length from his reach) to a height of 11'6". To do that he would need a vertical leap of at least... (drumroll please) 43.75" If you want to add to or correct any of the math here, please do so.

    • @Viper_75th_RR
      @Viper_75th_RR 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ben_wolfe8 I see your point. But he had a 45.6 vertical in college. Those measurements were taken as part of a physics study in 1983 when he was a sophomore. It’s possible that his vertical could have decreased in a year’s time. But it’s more likely that it increased as his bones and muscles matured. But you may be right.

    Bro you do realize there vertical is measured without the ball bro not with like you said “ he’s jumping with the ball on his dunks “ they test your vertical without the ball , I believe he jumped 48 inches I mean if a 6’2 guard could jump 49 inches why couldn’t Mike ?

    • @ben_wolfe8
      @ben_wolfe8 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Obviously I know that. I test my vertical all the time. Also, your main point about a 6’2 guard having a 49 isn’t even accurate information. You’re referring to shaedon sharpe, who was alleged to have a 49 due to a mismeasurement during a private workout prior to the NBA draft, which other teams (like the pacers) actively refuted since he tested much lower when working out for them. Also, watch this video by dunkademics: th-cam.com/video/4Fr23172_iw/w-d-xo.html&si=a2GDJWTQxlLW6lUG Or literally any video by them of people under 6’ doing crazy dunks. You’re gonna see guys who are under 6 ft getting their head above the rim, with or without the ball. The fact that Jordan never did that, with or without the ball directly contradicts the possibility he had a 48. Explain to me how guys who are measured at a 50 while being 8 inches shorter are jumping significantly higher than him. Do you think they’re lying about their verticals being way lower than they are or something?

      A pretty random analogy is to think of a fisherman that is heavily into their niche and can guess the weight and species of a fish, almost exactly to a T and is right most of the time. They could probably call bs on someone else’s claim about a fish’s weight simply bc of their experience, even if it looks good enough to people outside of that niche or who are casually into it. In this analogy, I’m the fisherman since I watch this kinda thing every single day and am familiar with how most high verticals happen bc of measurement errors that are typically intentional. Everyone in my niche and who has actually seen a 48”+ vertical agrees that Jordan wasn’t anywhere close to that for good reason. You’re right though, there’s no “proof” of either side but it’s just as silly to believe the 48 that his trainer claimed years after the fact with great incentive to lie

In fact, people like him who are tall and skinny jump a lot higher off one foot so it’s an advantage for the type of jumping he did. 4.) this is Jordan’s highest recorded hang time so you better hope that trajectory doesn’t matter (he did jump off two a lot and was much more balanced at both than someone like LeBron but was still better off one) 5.) this was in a dunk contest he obviously wasn’t tired and prepared for it

Also Jordan “recorded his 48” in a private gym with just him and his trainer so nobody can verify it. I actually also tested a 48.25” on a vert tree and you can find it on my channel.
