Talking about not having cheesy jokes ruining it for someone. Just when the review finishes saying "You can't really tell what decade it's supposed to take place in" 2:20 a 1970s Volvo pops into the scene. EPIC! 👍👍👍
My expectations were a bit low, so I was surprised at how much I loved this movie. I think it was wonderfully done and I wouldnt be surprised if it became a family favorite Christmas classic. ❤
I've absolutely adored the original book ever since I was introduced to it in the first grade, and there were moments in the story, particularly when they burp the baby Jesus, that stuck with me through my entire life. When I first saw The Chosen, my immediate thought was "I wonder if Dallas read Best Christmas Pageant Ever, because the portrayal of Jesus gives me that dame energy." The second Dallas announced he was making a movie based on the book, I was ecstatic. Still haven't gotten the chance to go see it since there aren't any theaters nearby, but my expectations have never been higher. I love Dallas's work, and I love the original story, and those two things put together are a recipe for something wonderful.
Very much enjoyed it. Particularly liked that the rowdy Herdman's weren't the only one's "converted," but also the cold Christians in the movie, who were melting by the end. Really well done.
YESSS!!! I'm glad you talked about this! I saw the film this week, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt the nostalgic, older Christmas movie vibes from it. I wanted to see this movie b/c I saw the 80's version and my teacher read the book to my class in 2nd grade, so I wanted to get a blast of elementary school nostalgia! And I'm a Gen-Zer, too! Great messages about Jesus and the Christmas story, and hope more movies are similar to this one with the Christian messages! Good job, Whaddo You Meme, and good job Dallas Jenkins! 💯✝❤
Saw this movie last week and thought it was fantastic. Hollywood needs to make more of these types of films. I feel comfortable recommending it to all ages- young, old, moms, dads, grandparents and kids can enjoy watching this together. By far, the best movie I've seen in a long, long time.
My husband went with some of our family out West. The whole group, ranging in age from preteen to 95, loved it. I’m really looking forward to seeing it, too.
I didn’t mind the language and smoking for this reason - there can be no redemption if there is nothing to be redeemed from. If everything about them was perfect, they wouldn’t have needed Christ. But as it is; they realized under conviction that they needed what only Jesus could give.
I don’t want to get my hopes up too high, but it sounds good. One that I will happily get other people’s hopes up for, if you haven’t seen it, is Unsung Hero. I HIGHLY recommend that movie. It’s about the life of the band For King And Country. I watched it with my parents and grandparents, it’s FANTASTIC.
You've easily convinced me to see it!....... Here's my favourite Christmas joke: "What did Mrs Christmas say to Father Christmas when she looked out of the window on Christmas Eve?"....... "It looks like rain dear!" (I don't know if that joke will be in the movie!) 🙂
Love, love, loved it!!! So touching and incredible what I read at the end of the movie...I won't say it here so that I won't ruin it for others, but I was so surprised. Just heartwarming.
I was pleasantly surprised. I loved the movie. I went because my mother-in-law wanted to go, but wasn’t excited to go. In the end I was laughing and crying. And I thought the message was beautiful. Surprise of the season. ❤

I got to see an early screening of this at Chosen Con and I loved it. And I normally don’t like Christmas movies. I saw it again after it was released. I was a huge fan of the original movie when I was a child. It’s such a sweet, funny movie
In the second grade my teacher read this book to the class. I loved that book. I'm glad that they did a good job at the second film adaptation of the film. When I visit my brother and his family this year maybe we'll have to watch. He isn't religious but by the sounds of things anyone can enjoy the film. Thanks for making media review for people like me who don't watch any tv/movies to still be able to know about good films to watch with the family.
Glad to see it connecting with people. I went on the preview night when it was shown the week before it released and it was myself -my friend had to cancel at the last moment - and one other family. I was hoping that people would support it.
I didn’t know there was an original movie, from way back in the 80s I watched it on TH-cam, it had the sweetest ending😭 I’m definitely going to watch this at the theater❤️
Good to hear! I also love the book and was wondering if the film would do it justice. Please tell me it has the scene with the ham in it (if you know, you know 😂)!
My husband and I took our 8 and 5 year old to see this. I didn’t have high expectations, but this movie was so good. Not only did my kids love it, but my husband and I both loved it and were in tears at the end of the movie. It kind of had a “Christmas Story” feel to it. Such a good reminder of what Christmas is truly about. Christ came for us all. This will become a regular Christmas movie for us.
Think we may go see it this weekend! Wasn’t planning on it but seems like a great chance to take my daughters and wife to a movie - matinee of course, those evening prices are crazy!
I remember seeing the first movie... A couple scenes still stick out in my mind: The Communion Wine... And the girl playing Mary, crying at Baby Jesus. Oh, the setup/ending shot's of the Offering Plate being passed. 😂
It is so good to see what was already a Christmas classic book in the 1970s and a classic movie in the 1980s become a new classic for a new generation. Great job on this film.
I saw the movie. I loved the movie. Absolutely one of the BEST Christian movies to date. I even wrote an FB post about it and Dallas Jenkins, himself, commented! I need to go see this movie again. What I loved about it, among other reasons, is that it feels like a low-budget faith-film...not unlike the low-budget church pageant. But what Dallas does is subvert our expectations where so much is done with so "little". (Fact: the movie was made on a $10mil budget.) This isn't some blockbuster holiday special. Instead, it goes in humbly. Sorta like how Jesus stepped into our world with minimal fanfare... Yet with so little, Jesus saved the world.
For those that don't know there was a 1990ish version of the film before this one came out and I liked it but I love the new one better, saw it last week or so and I laughed , I cried, and It made me want to see the hartmens succeed. As jesus himself said he didn't call the righteous but the sinners . We are all sinners unfortunately , but fortunately God loves us and wants to save us from ourselves. God bless you my friend. Keep up the good work. Hope you guys get this on dvd.
1983 on the TV adaptation. It's available here on TH-cam. I tried to watch it but I think you need a set of nostalgia goggles to really get into that one.
@sorenpx well to tell you the truth it was about in the 1990s that I first saw it , i hadn't thought about it until I saw the trailer for the film. I think it's my 4th favorite Christmas movie. On an unrelted question, if jack skellington showed up in your house with Christmas presents from halloween town what would you like to get. Me personally add go with the vampire teddy. Friendly and harmless of course.
@@anthonykolb8083 LOL. I only saw The Nightmare Before Christmas Once, when I saw it as a kid in the theater. I can't say I remember much of anything about it.
I loved the movie. I laughed, I cried. There were only 2 things I didn't like. Even though the message was really good, they never got all the way to the gospel (sooo very close, but not quite there) and I didn't care for the end scene that seemed to turn the Herdman's into saints in the Catholic sense by being overly saccharine & the actual reliquary with the angel wings. Other than that, I loved it and will get the DVD when it's available. My favorite scene was when the wise men entered the pageant.
Read the book when I was a kid and seen earlier adaptations. Really solid classic. If you haven't seen it before, check it out, and make sure you read the book.
Thanks for the review! We read the book two years ago around Christmastime and were excited to see they were coming out with a new version on film. Looking forward to seeing it!
Thank you so much for this review. I saw that it was coming out and really wanted to see it, but I read two bad reviews on it and decided that I would just wait until it came out on DVD. With your review, I'm excited about wanting to go see it again now.
Very accurate and solid review. Took my ma to see it and we both loved it. Plenty of laughs and tears. Already planning to make this movie a part of our Christmas plans every year along with "Scrooge" and "It's a Wonderful Life." An instant classic.
My wife and I went to see it. We like the book a lot and were big fans of the original movie with Loretta Swit so I was uncertain about going to see this one but it was such a wonderful movie. They stayed true to the source material, the acting was spot on, it was a beautifully filmed movie that captured the feel of the town. Sadly it captured all to well the reality of a western church that tends to spurn the outcasts but I am glad it did because it used that to hammer home the fact the Jesus came for everyone. This was one of the few movies I have ever seen that the audience in the theater started clapping when it was over.
I'm glad you did a review on this! I didn't even consider giving it a chance because Christmas movies these days at best tend to leave Jesus out completely or at worst mock Him. I'm glad you pointed out that this movie has the right focus and that Mr. Jenkins was the one directing it. I will definitely be going to see it!
Ever since I was a child my family reads the book together every year. When I saw there is a movie I was excited and scared at the same time. have yet to see it but you give me hope
Kynlee, Gladys in the film, is a super sweet talented girl. Met her over the summer while coaching some week long camps at their gym. Haven't seen it myself yet, but it was great to hear about it though. Happy to hear it's something safe for families for sure!
I'm glad to hear you liked it! I was worried when I heard they were making this movie. I loved the book when I was a kid and didn't want to see it be ruined.
Great review! As an older adult who had watched the tv movie done in 1983, I thought this was a great interpretation of the book. We met friends at this movie and the young man who went with us even talked with me about it a week later. It has a great impact on all who see it. I thought the best part was that it truly conveyed that Jesus came for EVERYone.
I liked the book as a child. For more of the Herdmans, the author also wrote "The Best School Year Ever." I'm not sure I'll be able to see it in a theater since we have really little kids that are not likely to sit and be quiet for the length of a feature film, but when it's available on streaming and/or disc, I'll definitely pick it up.
I read the book and watched the 80s version every year as a child, and I came away with the same view. I am so looking forward to sharing the book with my students and watching this new version! Thank you for this honest review!
Love this story. I thought the movie was a bit on the corny side, but not in any negative sense. The story is old enough that the dialog from the book would seem rather dated, but the slightly cheesy or quirky take allows modern audiences to enjoy it without trying to thrust it into modern times. The young actress who played Imogene Herdman was very strong. I have a few issues with ways that Dallas Jenkins presents The Chosen, but very, very few with what he's done with this book. Go see it.
I have huge issues with The Chosen and really was not excited to see this movie just because it was another Dallas Jenkins production. Nonetheless, I went with a group from my church because one of my best friends really loves this story and wanted to go with me. I was extremely surprised, and the entire group really loved it.
Saw it tonight. (fell asleep in part of it, but that's me, not the movie) Honestly, I think it'll rank as one of the better Christmas moves across all audiences for a very long time. Dunno that it'll hit "Christmas Story" status, but I do think it'll do very, very well. (It reminded me a lot of the nostalgia associated with "Christmas Story") And for an explicitly Christian movie, that's a very good thing!
Woot! Woot! So glad your son even had a sweet take-away. ❤ To the concerns, for those who have read the book or seen the 1983 film depiction of it, Charlie just doesn't have a big role. As for Imogene taking the Lord's name in vain 3 times in the book, she isn't checked, but in this movie depiction her doing so is appropriately checked. So that may help viewers. Also, the smoking is more implied, and she isn't seen really puffing away.
Thanks. I love that book, and my kids loved it when I read it to them years ago. Glad to hear that the movie caught the tone of the book. Never saw the TV adaptation from1983. BTW, in the book, younger brother Charlie didn't have much of a role, either.
I remember my mother reading the book to my siblings and me many years ago when we were kids. It seems strange now because we were not a Christian family, but I always remembered the story very well. It resonated. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I definitely intend to do so.
It was great. I liked the old made for TV one too and I re-watched the old one after I saw this in the theatre. It's a definite improvement over the old one. I am a little sad nobody will watch the old one anymore. The new version definitely made the adults seem more judgmental than the older film. Also in the 1986 version Mrs. Herdman actually comes to the pageant at the end. Great movie. Glad we got a remake and glad it was so well done. Very moving.
I absolutely loved this movie! The Herdman kids are delightful, deep down inside. I can’t wait to add it to my Christmas watch list. Dallas Jenkins did a fantastic job, which is not surprising.
I grew up with TBCPE -- both the book and the 1983 TV movie (which you can watch on TH-cam, and it holds up). It's one of the best Christmas stories in existence. It's simple, very Christmassy, funny, and has an overt focus on the redemption theme. I'm not a big Chosen fan (sorry), but I plan on seeing this one with my family. Also, pretty fun to see a comic like Pete Holmes as Bob.
I absolutely loved this movie! It was so well done and I laughed and cried and was exhorted to see people as Jesus does and see the story of Christmas in an honest and true way
I've seen it twice and cried both times. Never heard of book or 80s movie but would like to see it. But I really liked this one. Can't imagine better casting.
I had no idea about this movie until you started describing the plot, and I suddenly remembered that I read the story when I was a kid! I had no idea until now! Childhood memory unlocked! 😆😂

Honestly, I think it'll rank as one of the better Christmas moves across all audiences for a very long time. Dunno that it'll hit "Christmas Story" status, but I do think it'll do very, very well. (It reminded me a lot of the nostalgia associated with "Christmas Story")
And for an explicitly Christian movie, that's a very good thing!
Woot! Woot! So glad your son even had a sweet take-away. ❤
To the concerns, for those who have read the book or seen the 1983 film depiction of it, Charlie just doesn't have a big role. As for Imogene taking the Lord's name in vain 3 times in the book, she isn't checked, but in this movie depiction her doing so is appropriately checked. So that may help viewers. Also, the smoking is more implied, and she isn't seen really puffing away.
I haven't been to a theatre in a lot of years but I might give this one a try.
I saw it during the early showing with my son and loved it. We both thought it was supper sweet and hilarious
Thanks. I love that book, and my kids loved it when I read it to them years ago. Glad to hear that the movie caught the tone of the book. Never saw the TV adaptation from1983. BTW, in the book, younger brother Charlie didn't have much of a role, either.
Good review, I’ll have to check it out 🎉
Thanks for this review I was wondering about it
I remember my mother reading the book to my siblings and me many years ago when we were kids. It seems strange now because we were not a Christian family, but I always remembered the story very well. It resonated. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I definitely intend to do so.
Thank you for the review
I love your reviews. Wish you would do it more often.👍
Thank you or of mu favorite books as a kid, o didn't hear of this release I hope it comes to Norway!
Nice thanks for putting this on my radar! I'll check it out
Praise God
This is so helpful, thank you!
I read this book as a child. I’m so excited to watch the movie
Seeing this with my youth group in a couple weeks!
Good to hear that it’s a good family film. I might check it out sometime.
I really enjoyed it. I think the kid actors all did really well in their roles. The message was great as well.
I absolutely loved this movie! The Herdman kids are delightful, deep down inside. I can’t wait to add it to my Christmas watch list. Dallas Jenkins did a fantastic job, which is not surprising.
Wow. Nice. Thanks for the tip.
Saw it. Loved it. Had me checking myself as a Christian! Good movie. Worth adding to your Christmas movie list.
Great review! I’m looking forward to seeing it.
I read the original book this was based on, and loved it, also liking the original movie too, maybe I might give this a look.
I loved this movie and was crying by the end….it was beautiful and well acted.
I absolutely loved this movie! It was so well done and I laughed and cried and was exhorted to see people as Jesus does and see the story of Christmas in an honest and true way
I plan to see it this week.
I loved this book SO much as a young child. I can't believe it took so long to make a movie!
Enjoyed the movie 🍿 definitely worth watching. Your right the questions kids was asking were really good 😊
Much rather see that than most of the stuff coming out now. Can’t remember really when I was at theatre last. Has to be at least 10 years.
I've seen it twice and cried both times. Never heard of book or 80s movie but would like to see it. But I really liked this one. Can't imagine better casting.
Thank you
I’m so glad to hear that the movie turned out well!
Taking my son and his friends Tuesday ❤
I love your content. God bless you Buddy!
I was in a production of this as a kid. Yeah, it's pretty good.
I saw it at the KidsMin conference and absolutely loved if. I am planning on taking the whole family this week of Thanksgiving
Thanks, Whaddo.
I had no idea about this movie until you started describing the plot, and I suddenly remembered that I read the story when I was a kid! I had no idea until now! Childhood memory unlocked! 😆😂
