I had been an ErgData user till I started doing your workouts. The benefits of ErgZone became clear early on. Your use and explanations of ErgZone are even better than their explanations. Thank you for these informative videos.
Been a fan of ErgData for a few years now, and of the many metrics it shows, I find that Stroke Length helps me the most. My Catch leaves a lot to be desired due to problems with tight ankles - years of sprains etc, which shorten the drive if I'm not careful. So, keeping an eye on my 'best numbers' for Stroke Length is really useful. However, I'll have a pop at ErgZone too 😁😁
The updated ErgData is way better now. The logbook is integrated. For the heartrate zones I use the Polar Beats app simultaneously. I do not need the "social" stuff, but I think it might be a nice-to-have to have a liverowing feature, maybe with livecam via the smartphone. However I would not pay for it. The best thing about the Concept2 is the force curve, which is a good visual indicator of your stroke quality.
A bit disappointing that the concept 2 rower cannot sync to the concept 2 logbook without using an app, which more or less the only reason for using the ErgData app. This functionality should ideally already be built in to the PM monitor.
They have more of an old school open source mentality that they allow Apps to access all the data. Their focus is building the best machine possible (NOT built off-shore) for the lowest price. With that said the PM5 could easily have an update to add functionality we all agree is needed.
This would require a much more powerful processor in the PM5 and WiFi, both of which would drive up the cost. Most of us have smartphones and tablets of some sort. Using what we already have to the fullest is the most cost-effective way. Add a tablet you already have and turn this into a smart rowing device. Save $1000 in the process. It bugged me at first to have to connect my phone, but now I see the wisdom in just using our own smart device to connect to the servers.
Ergzone sadly isn’t backwards compatible when it comes to history. Connect to a PC using the connection on the back of the PM and then use the C2 utility software to transfer your history to your logbook. I’m afraid that’s the next you’ll get.
Thank you for sharing this data! Could you please answer my question about the ergdata app: should I use the option: 'Weight adjust' on my logfiles? Or the raw data?
Also curious to see what 2.0 brings. Ideally I'd want an app that combines the strengths of all 3 (zone/data/race), probably called Ergasm. That's just me though.
At the 1:08 mark you mention ErdData has a voice option, but I have never seen this and the video doesn't show a path or what the benefit might be. I agree that ErgZone free version (wasn't even aware they had a pay for play app) is much better, but it has many shortcomings that could make it better. The percentage of completion in the top left corner is kind of wonky and doesn't work well unless you have intervals that are even lengths or times. It would also be nice if we could edit some of the workouts that we didn't create ourselves (such as RA, FMWOW and CTC) because quite often those aren't fully programmed the way I'd like.
Hey! The video should (very briefly) show the screen where you can enable the voice option ( not that it’s particularly amazing). As for the edit thing - you should be able to pick up one of my rows (or anyone else) and duplicate it. Then you can edit how you wish. Let me know if that doesn’t work for you though, as it does for me (and I have the full fat version).
Voice options? In ErgData? Since when? Never seen that with my ErgData. Or did I get confused? Maybe that's just an iPhone option? I like ErgZone, but I often have issues with phone going dark, or the intervals not recording properly (yes, with an updated firmware for the pm5). I look forward to seeing ErgData 2.0!
It's definitely there. If you look at the video, you'll see the screen that comes up with the voice option. It's not great though, just a prompt for how much time has passed etc.
👋🏻 Question….can I “just row” and be hooked up to ergzone like I can on ergdata or I have to program in a workout for ergzone to work??? I cannot figure out how to do that.
I can not figure out how to use ErgZone and there are no instructions. I assume you can’t just row? I entered a 50 min row and saved it but can not find it to start.
Understandable. Like I say in the video, the beauty of ErgData is its simplicity. That said, you're missing out on a lot of good funcationality. Hopefully ErgData 2.0 will have that though.
It’s usually more environmental if it’s drop outs. Phone / PM on latest firmware, nothing causing interference (my Dyson fan weirdly causes Bluetooth dropouts).
@@adzy166 I would suggest making sure the firmware is up to date for a start as have had the same issue at my local gym until I updated it, and or connect using hardwire lead which is what I do now all the time. You can buy cradle and lead direct from Concept and not expensive.
@@Tugger4me1 thanks Paul. Yes this is part of it. My firmware is up to date but I have an unresolved issue when ever I put my usb stick in and select workout before the stick has had time to read data it results in a hard crash of the PM5. Data is preserved, but it’s indicative of a wider fault - possibly hardware- so I keep it simple now.
@@adzy166 Did you initially format your stick to FAT32 i think it is and then before doing anything insert the stick which is empty in to the PM5 let it recognise it and then I think you have to give it a name. The PM5 then places some stuff / folders on to the stick which I think then saves any work outs to with out any input from you. This is what I had to do to update the firmware in that order and when I randomly put a stick in prior to this the PM5 did not like it and showed overloading message and stuff. I do not know if you can have a stick and or phone hardwired at the same time though - may be one or the other. I am happy with the hardwired phone tbh.
@@rowalongBeen using ergzone for awhile and I like it. I can program complex workouts and I just follow what it tells me. Love that. I experimented, and note that you can preload the workout in ergzone while connected to the internet. When you get to the gym with no internet connection, you can Bluetooth connect to the concept2 and it works. Thanks for introducing me to ergzone. I find it motivational.
A NEW VERSION OF ERGDATA HAS BEEN RELEASED, MAKING THIS VIDEO OBSOLETE. A NEW VIDEO IS IN THE MAKING!
I had been an ErgData user till I started doing your workouts. The benefits of ErgZone became clear early on. Your use and explanations of ErgZone are even better than their explanations. Thank you for these informative videos.
Just got on the ErgZone train a couple of weeks ago and I absolutely love it! The big sell for me is how easily you can program the monitor.
ErgData had a major 2.0 update today! Would love to see a follow up review!

I agree, the stroke length gives me a heads up as to how full a stroke I am doing - ie cheating or getting tired.
Please start making rowalongs with random backgrounds like this. The RA logo split on the picture frames is gold
Haha!!! I’m so pleased you spotted this!!! I was quietly proud of it myself. And wondered if anyone else would notice or care!
Agree! Can we have a nice zen garden backdrop soon ?
@@adzy166 I think I need to improve my lighting skills if I’m going to try to appear outside…

Brought my concept2 a few months back and was unaware of the apps. How am I able to sync past training events to ergzone?

I'll be sticking with Ergzone then. Thanks John
My pleasure
Does ErgZone save in-stroke data, in particular force curves of each stroke?
You can see the force curve per stroke, but I don't think there's a way to come back and review it after you've finished.
Thank you for sharing this data! Could you please answer my question about the ergdata app: should I use the option: 'Weight adjust' on my logfiles? Or the raw data?
Raw data. The weight adjusted setting is more to try to balance proper boats with the right rowers.
That #ErgZone dashboard is fantastic too!
Also curious to see what 2.0 brings. Ideally I'd want an app that combines the strengths of all 3 (zone/data/race), probably called Ergasm. That's just me though.
This time next year Rodders, we'll be millionaires with an idea like that!!

Where can I read this "tease" of a version 2 for ErgData? This video was published about 5 months ago and still no update :(
It’s in beta testing right now. All I can say is that it looks good.
@@rowalong how can I sign up for the BETA?

It is the one downside to Ergzone. Just make a 1 or 2 hour row and save it as a bookmark. Then load that up when you’re going to do a just row.
Not really sure how to just start rowing on ergzone. We have to program it first?
I answered your other comment - but I do need to make a proper reivew of Ergzone, going through how to program it etc.
how do you get your heart rate to the ergzone so that it shows on the pm5
Connect your heart rate monitor to the PM5 first (assuming it’s Bluetooth or Ant+ ) and then Ergzone picks it up from there.
Love the sofa. Where did you get it?
Well, unfortunately that entire background is a 3D generated image... Good to know you liked it!!
I can not figure out how to use ErgZone and there are no instructions. I assume you can’t just row? I entered a 50 min row and saved it but can not find it to start.
Have you made sure you have “mr workouts” selected at the top? And you aren’t filtering for the wrong machine?
My Workouts - not Mr…
I find the ErgZone display confusing, so it's ErgData for me.
Understandable. Like I say in the video, the beauty of ErgData is its simplicity. That said, you're missing out on a lot of good funcationality. Hopefully ErgData 2.0 will have that though.
I got frustrated using erg data. Bluetooth would drop out during long rows. Not trusted. So end up using a usb stick instead.

Yeah, that's certainly a flaw with it. I think they're looking at an offline version.

Might be time to update this video, John? The new ErgData app is a big upgrade
Yes. Although the initial release of it had a lot of users reporting problems. So I’m holding off to see if the 2.01 update has fixed those issues.
