You just discovered one of the greatest vocalist of our generation, if not the best when you factor in the emotion she can bring out of her listeners. Not too many singer can do that these days. Take care.
After many years of watching her, I love seeing someone new find her. Many of us believe her to be the best female singer on this planet. She is a special woman and I hope you delve into her music. She is not going to disappoint!
So Hyang is a 46 year old devout Christian and gospel singer from South Korea. In her early 20's and newly married, she was diagnosed with early stage uterine cancer, which left her unable to have children. After being completely healed by God and her doctors, So Hyang's goal has been to use her voice to bring comfort to people who are experiencing difficult times. She IS NOT motivated by either money or fame, and she has rejected numerous offers from major record labels. In addition to being a published author of several fiction books, she lectures about singing and vocal techniques at a South Korea university. So Hyang, her husband, and some assistants, arrange every aspect of her live performances; the music, backing vocals, staging, lighting, etc.
How great is she? She is the singer who made audience around the world admit by only a few covers she arranged to sing. Every cover she touched was performed technically and emotionally perfect. Have you noticed the flowy tiny shiny vibrations and pianissimo of subtlety and delicacy here not to speak of big belts? too stunning to be true.
We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages: Korean, English, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading French and Greek! Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: th-cam.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/w-d-xo.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere! She just turned 46 on April 5, 2024, though in Korean culture she would be 47 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone,” their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527 While being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on TH-cam. Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on TH-cam and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for some of her songs, wrote "I Have Nothing," her most iconic song, and is the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places Sohyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas. Here is the interview where Sohyang related the events: th-cam.com/video/EqeE_1nP-Kk/w-d-xo.html (Be sure to turn on English subtitles.) Here is the version of “I Have Nothing” Oprah, David Foster, Whitney's former manager and the rest watched on TH-cam: th-cam.com/video/T4UyIMkdy4M/w-d-xo.html She preceded it with this blockbuster: vimeo.com/312061203 She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 16:25 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.” In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. Sohyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. th-cam.com/video/rl-jX9kBsEs/w-d-xo.html (Again, turn on English subtitles.) So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no interactive social media presence whatsoever. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! And whether Sohyang likes it or not, fame has found her, run her over and then backed up and run over her again! On Oct. 5, 2020, it was revealed that Sohyang turned down _yet another_ contract offer, this time from Sony Music US. www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200921000995 “Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said. “I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.” “And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via TH-cam, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.” Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts. In Korean dictionaries 소향--Sohyang--has several meanings. • First is a type of Korean traditional music. • Second is to burn incense on a burner. • Third is to go toward. But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light." Her grandmother named her. Please analyze her performance of “Bridge Over Troubled Water”: th-cam.com/video/C6iHh4yBxCo/w-d-xo.html Also, please react to her version of “The Power of Love”: th-cam.com/video/LrNkVRrK7_I/w-d-xo.html Plus this beautiful duet with her friend Lee Hi where they do Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You”: vimeo.com/439148918 And this version of her singing “Oh Holy Night”: vimeo.com/322716334 Here she performs “Lean On Me” before Michael Bolton, who called her a vocal “virtuoso” after her performance: th-cam.com/video/GvsgCllcNPE/w-d-xo.html Wait until you see her duet of David Foster's “The Prayer” with Jeong Ui Geu: th-cam.com/video/rte-q3kunp8/w-d-xo.html Her performance of "Fate" in Korean requires no translation: vimeo.com/198161448 And finally “Will You Be There”: th-cam.com/video/nBdSpexUxik/w-d-xo.html Here’s an English language interview with her that I’m sure you will enjoy: th-cam.com/video/N2u_pmoWxj8/w-d-xo.html Her English is perfect when she sings and almost perfect when she is doing interviews. OK, I’ll stop gushing now. Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Here it is: th-cam.com/video/VnPAkryrygQ/w-d-xo.html I know, bananas isn’t it? Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean stage production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" 'about one hundred times' when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has an outgoing and bubbly personality. She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently! Though she is maybe 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way. I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else. As you can see, I am a shameless fan. 😉
A warm welcome to the amazing world of Sohyang. She is one of the best female vocalists currently on the planet. Take the journey, sit back, and enjoy the ride. She will blow your mind. Thank you for the reaction.
FANTASTIC/GREAT/AWESOME reaction to the PHENOMENAL So Hyang. This event was in 2015, when she was 37 years old. You have just witnessed a very small sample of the flexibility in her voice. Her range is RIDICULOUS, and her breath control breath control is INSANE. In 2024, at 46 years old, not only is she aging in reverse, but she sounds better than ever before, if that's even possible.
Congratulations on making your acquaintance with Sohyang, my favorite singer without any reservation. There are a million versions of covers of this song but once you hear this, you will never forget this performance.
Hi, Zack. So Hyang is a South Korea national treasure. What a voice. Lucy has a rendition of this song that is also amazing. You should listen to it also. It was recorded within the last year. Thanks as always Zack for the reaction and always stay safe, healthy, and free.
This lady is a music professor, a children fiction book writer, a religious series book writer, a CCM singer, a cancer survivor, has a fragile health (due to hepatitis infection during blood transfusion) with numerous cases of pneumonia. In addition she is imo the greatest female voice alive and a musical genius. As I mentioned in older posts, I believe if our planet had 10 more individuals like her, earth would be self luminous.
Welcome to the world of SoHyang~!!! She is CCM/GOSPEL SINGER of South KOREA and cancer survivor. . She is one of the greatest vocalist in the world. But She wasn't known as well as popular because She sing for GOD and Comfort people who has hardtime Not for fame or money. ..In her youth, she turned down all offers from mega agencies for her beliefs...and now she is 46years old. .She has so many legendary live performances . She always sings with sincerity whenever and wherever. So it comforts those who listen to her song...That's why I love her...And her singing skills are the best, not to mention... This performance is just tip of iceberg.. . Thanks for your reaction of Queen Sohyang ♥
Many voice critics feel So Hyang is the best female singer on the planet. She is one of a kind. I have never found another singer with as many singing techniques as So Hyang. Thanks for the reaction. Her rendition of "I Have Nothing" from the DMC Festival, her in a dark blue dress, is another otherworldly performance, but she has many, many great songs in English and Korean.
There are a couple of different categories that I feel her performances fall into. There are her epics, like this one, where she is on a competition show and "swings for the fences". Among those are 'You Raise Me Up', 'I Have Nothing' (Whitney Houston cover on Immortal Songs), 'Arirang Alone' (Korean folk song) and all of her 'King of Masked Singer' show performances (recommend the Vimeo versions of those for subtitles). Then there are her appearances on 'Begin Again: Korea' which are very stripped down, acoustic, "busking" style concerts done during the pandemic. These show a completely different side of her as she is much more nuanced and shows even more of her emotional range. Suggest 'I Will Always Love You', 'Misty', and 'If I Ain't Got You'.
She sings every syllable like it's the last one to ever come out of her mouth, doesn't she? Before you watch her performance of the 7+ minute "Everyone," dig a grave.
He can't jump straight to her 2 "biggest" vocal performances, "Everyone" or "Dream". He has to go through a sequence to reach that level. It's like starting off with jalapeño, and then skipping all other heat levels to jump to Pepper X; that's risky if he hasn't developed the tolerance for the heat. He has to work his way up to the hottest habanero, then Fatalii, Scorpion, or Ghost Pepper, then Carolina Reaper, and finally Pepper X.
One of the best vocalists in the world. And you have only brushed the surface. Look up some of the outdoor performances from Begin again Korea especially MISTY
Check out her Begin Again (outdoor) performances of I Will Always Love You, the jazz classic Misty, and If I Aint Got You. She can sing any genre and rearranges them to make them bigger than ever. Her cover of Oh Holy Night is spellbinding

Nice to see a reactor really go in blind with Sohyang!!! Thanks man! And i really would like to see more of your reactions to her ❤❤❤❤ try Sohyang Everyone and see if you shed a tear. Thanks man.

Welcome to Sohyang's world!!!😎. She is always in Diva mode when she sing, but she is the most umble and anti Diva uman being!!! 🤩 Songs for more reactions: Arirang Alone Everyone 'Til you love me again (new song) Dream Lean on me Ecc.......🎤👍🏻
Sohyang is not human. I'm not going to recommend any video in particular, because any performance of hers is incredible. My favorite is Arirang, it's a beautiful version and listening to Sohyang in Korean is something else.
No, she isn't one genre. She sings many different styles. And her voice isn't nasal. Her voice at the start is clear and pitch-perfect, and she works in the Gospel twang with mixed voice, as she adds in riffs & runs and big belts. Without the twang and mixed voice, she'll sound like opera. Listen to the start and end of "Arirang Alone". She sings in a beautiful Disney-princess tone. In between, she goes into vocal beast mode to tell a dramatic story with her voice. A Kumbaya performance is too mundane for a big TV competition against 6 other very popular Korean singers. Sohyang doesn't need twang when she sings classics, such as "Misty", which is Jazz. She also sings pop, Rock & Roll, rap, and Gospel.
And for the best version you've ever heard of "I Have Nothing," please react to her cover. The best version is an indoor venue and she is in a blue gown.
queen so hyang. South korean ccm Amazing singer.writer Angel. World best amazing singer, international media korean mariah carey.
Welcome to SOHYANG she is nothing short of amazing....Please do react to LEAN ON ME (Michael Bolton Special) her interpretation of the song is the best so enjoy
As mind blowing as this was, there was so much artistry in this, that the song, I thought, was partially lost (the mood of the song was hijacked). Best version yet? IMHO....Well Art G will never be beaten on this one..... but female vocal..... I think you are about to witness this in the very short term future. I'd bet on it.
Sohyang is the real deal as far from fakery you could possibly come. She doesn't sing for like fame or money but to bring comfort and consolation to those who are struggling in life. She has turned down every major label there is cause she don't wanna risk to compromise with her faith, she's a devout Christian, and with who she is. Besides beeing one of the best singers there is she's also a music teacher and writes fantasy novels. Along with her husband a a few others she does all the arrangements herself.
Great reaction Zack! So Hyang did a great job! What a powerful voice! A smoother version of this song was done by Lucy Thomas. Please play and react to Lucy's rendition: “BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER”; - Age 19 - th-cam.com/video/dWO1HbkBUR8/w-d-xo.html Enjoy, Hopelessly Addicted in Arizona
It's a live TV show featuring 7 popular Korean singers. The episode required each contestant to choose a classic "pop" song from the West, but performed in their own new arrangement, not a sing-along cover. Sohyang goes from angelic voice to vocal beast to display her vocal prowess for the competition. [The guy in black with eyeglasses, who closed his eyes and mouthed the lyrics, is Korea's well-known DJ who introduced many Western pop songs to Korea.] If this "big" style of hers isn't your cup of tea, you can avoid her videos from competition shows, and experience her other songs. "Misty", "I Will Always Love You", "The Power of Love", "Never Enough", "Flashlight", ... aren't over-the-top with powerful belts. For links, see my response to his query at the top. For her "Arirang Alone" performance, she starts off with a pure, angelic voice like a Disney princess, but switches to beast mode, only to conclude with that sweet voice -- that, in itself, is extremely difficult to do after minutes of epic riffs & runs, and belts.
Hi Zack. Thanks for the Sohyang video. You just opened the door to an amazing world. Welcome. Her stage name is Sohyang - pronounced 'so h-yong'. If you go farther into her world, you will discover that many view her as the finest Soprano on the planet. This video, and many of her best known, are from a TV Contest which by their nature, require a performance that displays a spectrum of the artist's talents, so she is not showing off here. She does her own musical arrangements. She is not well known because she chose to avoid contracts with huge recording companies, but IS well known to people like David Foster and Michael Bolton. She began singing Gospel Music and can sing any genre of music ever written. She is a cancer survivor and has devoted her magnificent voice to lifting people's spirits. There is still so much more to know about her. If you take recommendations: "So Hyang - I have Nothing, I Am a Singer Legend, DMC Festival 2015" Cheers.
Why do people insist on mispronouncing the -ang part as -ohng or -uhng? Your mispronunciation makes "yaw" (as in yaw, pitch, and roll) sound like "yohw" or "yuhw", which is way off. Her full name is "김소향 (Kim, So-hyang)", but she leaves out her surname in her stage name, "소향 (Sohyang)". Here's the breakdown of the Hangul symbols in her full name: 김소향 (Kim, So-hyang) 김 = ㄱ ㅣ ㅁ (k i m) 소 = ㅅ ㅗ (s o) 향 = ㅎ ㅑ ㅇ (h ya ng) Google Translate in Detect Language mode pronounces "김소향" decently. However, the proper pronunciation of her stage name can be heard before the start of her Immortal Songs 2 performance of "Bridge Over Troubled Water", when the host introduces her as "SOH hee-yahng". The "hee" part is very quick and subtle, almost like a puff of air after the "h" sound carried over from the stressed "SOH" syllable. Note that the "yahng" sound uses the first and last phonemes (syllable components) of "yaw" and "song", respectively; it isn't "uhng" or "ohng" as too many non-Korean folks claim. Here's a video that explains it by example: th-cam.com/video/4sdbO-hTZbk/w-d-xo.html .
Please note that 황성제 (Hwang, Seong-jae) [BJJ Music, Butterfly production team] is credited for many of the arrangements of Sohyang's big performances. Of course, anyone who works with Sohyang will put in the "impossible" elements that only divas like Sohyang can achieve, and will take her recommendations into consideration.

Zack, before you judge this version. Do yourself a favour and listen to Lucy Thomas version of this. 2 completely different versions but I prefer the slower Lucy Thomas version with much more feeling, similar to Simon and Art Garfunkel version.
She is really very gifted and talented and has a lot of technical ability, but she is just too high and shrill for me. All those runs and embellishments don't do anything for me, and I'll have to disagree... I prefer Lucy's version better.

So she is called the queen!!
In terms of emotion and vocal skills, she is the best in the world!!
Epic performance. She might be the best vocalist. More of her reaction please-

Welcome to the most wonderful musical rabbit hole. These eyes have shed many a tear listening to So Hyang's angelic music.
So Hyang released an original song about two months ago, 'Til You Love Me Again'. This humble woman can sing any genre of music.
She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone,” their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
While being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on TH-cam.
Here is the interview where Sohyang related the events: th-cam.com/video/EqeE_1nP-Kk/w-d-xo.html (Be sure to turn on English subtitles.)
Here is the version of “I Have Nothing” Oprah, David Foster, Whitney's former manager and the rest watched on TH-cam: th-cam.com/video/T4UyIMkdy4M/w-d-xo.html
She preceded it with this blockbuster: vimeo.com/312061203
She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 16:25 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. Sohyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. th-cam.com/video/rl-jX9kBsEs/w-d-xo.html (Again, turn on English subtitles.)
So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no interactive social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! And whether Sohyang likes it or not, fame has found her, run her over and then backed up and run over her again!
On Oct. 5, 2020, it was revealed that Sohyang turned down _yet another_ contract offer, this time from Sony Music US. www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200921000995
“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via TH-cam, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being.

So hyang regarded as the best female vocalist, and we hear why I believe she's in her forties now and still sounding as great 🔥👑
the incredible world class sohyang what a voice she has got on her love from the uk
She is amazing and it wasn't forced like some diva females . Her voice is so clear. So many different layers to her voice. More please.
Well Said !
The world class singer Sohyang. So many amazing performances.
She is the greatest diva of our time..💕🙏
You found out about her too late..
This is what So Hyang does she slays songs. Thx Zack.
Welcome to The slaying Queen So in her fearless mode 🎉😢😮
Thanks from Perú 😊
Wow....amazing..
No diva in her whatsoever. So Hyang is a very humble human being.
Diva in the sense of vocal mastery. Not the more negative connotation of better than others attitude.
@@John-yx4dc Cool 👍

Finally you got on this amazingly talented lady so many songs she does better than the original

Sohyang is not human. I'm not going to recommend any video in particular, because any performance of hers is incredible. My favorite is Arirang, it's a beautiful version and listening to Sohyang in Korean is something else.
Killed it. High pitch monotone sounding. 😮
You should learn more about the singing voice and try to understand what great vocalists can do.
She's the best my man... THE best.. Tip of the iceberg..
She's the one genre diva queen of South Korea Sohyang yet not so old, with amazing nasalized voice in Korean accent.she is phenomenal.👍
She is not from Earth. She is a singing god who came down to us.
Welcome to Sohyang Best Music^^
And for the best version you've ever heard of "I Have Nothing," please react to her cover. The best version is an indoor venue and she is in a blue gown.

Recommend, 'I have nothing' by Sohyang
👍👍👍👍👍
Sohyang is the real deal as far from fakery you could possibly come. She doesn't sing for like fame or money but to bring comfort and consolation to those who are struggling in life. She has turned down every major label there is cause she don't wanna risk to compromise with her faith, she's a devout Christian, and with who she is. Besides beeing one of the best singers there is she's also a music teacher and writes fantasy novels. Along with her husband a a few others she does all the arrangements herself.

If this "big" style of hers isn't your cup of tea, you can avoid her videos from competition shows, and experience her other songs.
If you take recommendations: "So Hyang - I have Nothing, I Am a Singer Legend, DMC Festival 2015"
Cheers.
Here's the breakdown of the Hangul symbols in her full name:
김소향 (Kim, So-hyang)
김 = ㄱ ㅣ ㅁ (k i m)
소 = ㅅ ㅗ (s o)
향 = ㅎ ㅑ ㅇ (h ya ng)
Google Translate in Detect Language mode pronounces "김소향" decently.
