I was reading about JP II and his time at the Angelicum, and he was taught by Garrigou LaGrange there. JP II could not speak highly enough of Garigou LaGrange, and the Angelicum. He strongly encouraged friends to go there. But JP II noted that at the Angelicum, they taught "the real Thomas" - they did not demand total adherence to the manuals. They were free to think and question. The manuals had GREAT value for simple seminarians and priests. They laid the foundation of knowledge that each priest needs. True, they were mere memorization etc, but that was miles ahead of the baloney that began to be taught in the seminaries once Aquinas was jettisoned and replaced with mush and faddish nonsense. So the manuals had their place, in basic priestly formation. Once that foundation was laid, a priest could educate himself and go further into the Nouvelle Theologie. Start with Thomas, then broaden your outlook a bit.

"we can't allow them to steal those categories from us...".
I once chatted with a TAC grad about the possibility of a historical (rather than theologically based) liberal arts college. Reply: "Aristotle says that poetry is more philosophic than history, because poetry expresses what could happen, while history records merely what did happen. As a Christopher Dawson acolyte, I was dumbfounded... What of Gilson?

"If the God of the philosophers is not the God of your religion then your religion is false. Because, what is not logically entailed is not worthy of either adherence or affirmation" (David Bentley Hart). Classical theism has been a part of every great religious tradition precisely because it is an aspect of 'natural' revelation: the way reality reveals itself to us in our thoughts and words.

This also relates to von Balthasar on Bonaventure: see Balthasar on the Spriritual Senses by Mark McInroy [Chapter 2] (13:42)

Why is it so hard to find fellow "Communio" type mentalities these days? Everyone is all on board with Francis or TLM!!

Joseph Ratzinger didn't like rock music ... why would he be a good theological teacher if he was so disconnected from his own culture.

The amount of catholic scholars who dislike rock music is long indeed sir. Who know? Maybe they had good reasons

@@josephclark1431 we are all entitled to our own taste. For myself if I had to choose between good music and salvation music wins every time.
