How to stop your Dachshunds excessive barking

- Take a look at our Before and After video of dealing with Excessive barking, with Arnold the Miniature Dachshund. Arnold joined our 3 week Complete Training Programme for obedience training. One of the main concerns Arnold’s owners had was his excessive barking. Arnold is quite a nervous dog and would bark at people entering the house or pass by. In order to tackle this problem, we worked on building his confidence and pairing positive associations with people. Arnold had also learned that he could get attention from barking, so we taught him that when he is quiet and gives eye contact, he will then be rewarded with either a toy or some fuss. Take a look at the video and see how well he did.

My two Dixie’s came running hearing Arnold barking. Hey who’s barking? Is it you? Haha
In confirm that it's not so easy... My doxie would bark for play, for food, for going out, because there is a car in front of the house, because there is children behind the house, because he can smell a cat or a rabbit, because music is too loud, because it's too silent, because there is ghosts and UFOs, because he was happy, because he was sad. He had to communicate and every bark had its functions and variations. When he didn't like something he would stand up, wait a few seconds and make a silent "wofff" which means "I don't like that".

abuseofviolence They were bred to hunt in burrows and bark to alert the hunter after. Getting a Dachshund if you don’t like barking is a bit silly.

@@amucandlecraft5423 I don't know that, coz my parents just suddenly gave me a doxie on my birthday. And although I hated the idea of having a dog and the responsibilities, I've grown used to it and I love her very much. But yeah, the excessive barking can be pretty annoying sometimes. Whenever she does that I just hug and try to comfort her with gentle rubs. She's really anxious about almost anything. Even by just accidentally hitting/dropping something that creates an audible noise can trigger the barking 😅
Did this become better with age? I have a very anxious 1 year old doxie and she won’t quit barking at everything and everyone :( my poor baby

I have the same problem with my chocolate and tan, along with the fact he is now terrified to go for a walk. This happened right after we moved into our new home.

My doxie is, thankfully, not too bad a barker, but he does keen and yowl at high-pitched music or singing, even if it's not loud.
I just fell in love with dachshunds after 3 of them climbed on my legs in Florida, AND THEN A SMALL BABY DACHSHUND START CLIMBING ON ME IT WAS TOO PURE!

Don't get a dog. You'll have to deal with them barking when left alone. That's a huuuuge issue that you have no idea how much pain it can cause you.

Dachshunds are natural ball chasers and barkers. Give any dog treats and you will have their full attention.

What a strange thing to suggest a dog is inferior if he’s at the shelter. There are many reasons pets are brought there.

What I find a bit disgusting is the snobbery of purebred dog owners that encourages a million unhealthy puppy mills. So unnecessary when there are so many wonderful dogs waiting to be adopted at shelters.

One time I was trying to get mine to bark by barking myself to the back of his ears. He turned and looked at me frightened. Did I do something wrong?
I didn’t see or hear any step by step techniques on how to stop the anxiousness and barking.

This is spot on. Our 5 month old now only barks when she needs to go out or when she’s a bit scared. Food is the best way to train out bad behaviour, keep a dachshunds focus (pretty much the hardest part) and help them be obedient. Also a bit of old fashioned firmness doesn’t go a miss, although with Arnold here that wouldn’t work because he’s so anxious already. With our Dory sometimes she just needs to be told lol.
Trent Crow too many rewarding treats and food will make your doxie overweight and that causes many back problems.
Is Arnold a Standard or Miniature Dachshund ?
Doxies are the best dogs ever!!! But if you got this problem with them barking like I did, go watch ceaser, the dog whisperer on stopping this behavior in doxi’s. It works better.

Yep. I iseplay with mine. But whenhunans come to the door he will bark. But I have been nothing but calm and I pick him up and open the door and when he feels my calmness, he stops to bark. Or I tell him to stop. And he does. You can control the amount of barking, but people need to be reminded that they are hunting dogs, not lap dogs and you can’t get mad of what they are bred for. They do have different barks. So I learned that. They are active and you need to play with them, give them something to destroy and walk them. Then they are relaxed.
Sigh... Dachshunds are very anxious and sensitive breed indeed, sure. But they're also very loyal and honest.
If only my neighbor knew how to treat their pet dachshund this nicely. It just won't stop barking and yelping sometimes. I almost had it.
So, really, this is just an advertisement not a training video. So glad your little dog doesn't bark anymore but, here in Australia, my dog is still being quite the pain in the arse..

There are a few tips to take away from this video anyway. It's a start for something you can try.
maybe our family had an easy dachsund ( full long haired) as he only really barked at the doorbell. He's now 16 years old and not in great health (blind with cancer but with manageable symptoms)He's never been a problem although stubborn with his food as he's never eaten "dog food" only what we have eaten within reason eg cooked meat like lamb chicken et with fresh veg. A strange love of anchovies and olives which are his treats. he'll bite your arm off for fish, and he likes a share of my tea in the morning
My dog barks at me when she can’t recognize me but I have never heard her bark at the door opening
I have a mini who I love to death, but he is a terror. I can't seem to get him to cooperate at all. Potty training took 6 months. I like that you teach focus first. That is what I will work on. What treats do you use while training?
Carson Cutler My vet recommended baby carrots as training treats. They are lower in calorie than many other dog treats, so I don't feel badly about giving my doxie them while training. There are some tiny training treats you can get at any pet supply store too. I always have carrots on hand, so I use those, and my dog loves them.

Just pick them up and it stops. Give them food and it stops. Ignore them and it stops. I have had two very quiet standards. They worry about you and they worry about food. If you are cool, they will be too

I had a dachshund and on Nov.5 2017 someone stole him out of my kennel in the back yard. I only had him outside for about a couple of hours I heard him barking but I didn't pay it any attention because he was constantly barking when he was outside. I had him for 6 years since he was a puppy it is really sad because you don't know if his alright or not.
They say that they can come back home but I don't know if that will ever happen.

I would never ever leave my dachshunds unattended outside. Well not really, cause I used to take one for a walk and left the other tied outside, but it was within earshot and i could view her from the walk i took. Still I was risky.
Dachshunds are desirable dogs that are easy to steal because of their size. Most people also rightly train out aggression to strangers which makes it all the easier. We only leave ours outside for a few mins to do her business, never at night unattended and only let her in the patio bit near our back door. It’s not worth the risk. Sorry about your loss, it sucks.

I have a mini doxie..love her to pieces BUT she barks day and night. Bark collars don't work I've tried them and she just barks more. She just loves to hear her own voice and nothing will stop her. I was hoping for some actual training tips not just feeding a dog treats all the time. Still not sure how you shut that cute little dog up.

Mine bark to sound the alarm that's why I have them. If I haven't been outside; I go outside the house when they bark and spend time with them....Their barking doesn't bother me but it irritates my husband. Bue he ignores them so that's what he gets. And he is supposed to be the big dog person at our home...hahahahahaha P.S. the big dogs don't bark when people come into their space without permission. they just bite your butt....

I am not for or against this breed, I am not a dog lover at all, but when you have one barking under your bedroom window, day in day out, from selfish neighbours allowing it, causing stress and sleeplessness, it's only normal to dislike this breed.
