Now this is more like it. Compared to indies who look the exact same in terms of UI design and the enemies, projectiles, friendly units/towers are literally geometric shapes on a blank background, this is so charming and diegetic. Love when some attention is paid to the feel of a game like this.
I’m not sure Tom realized this but one of the things about this game I like (and the main point of your soldiers) is that you can end a level early if enough of your soldiers can make it to /their/ base. Which is why the progress bar at the top has the victory point in the middle.
For those who recognised the tune of that amazing menu song, it's Dance of the Hours from the opera La Gioconda, which was also parodies by Allan Sherman in "Camp Granada"/"Hello Mudder, Hello Fadder". 😄
This reminds me of an old game simply called "toy soldiers" where you play as fancy little WW1 toy soldiers in a tower defense game, putting down little artillery pieces and machine guns and whatnot. I honestly think Tom would really like it (its on steam) and would love to see him play it, even if its not very likely that he does.
The format of a kid imagining attacks with miscellaneous household items makes this a relatably nostalgic setup for a TD. Edit: My gods, *_Reign of Fire_* what a film! I shouldn't be shocked that Tom also references this classic, but it was a pleasant surprise.
Thank you for the upload Tom. Currently 3am and Im extremely sick, but your videos always make me feel better and help me asleep. I always end up rewatching your old series like Witch Hunt, Layers of Fear, Dead Secret, God’s Basement, and currently rewatching Sinking City again. Keep up the amazing work Tom!
@@PierceArner cheers man! Funnily enough I always see your comments on old videos. Can actually see one on the Sinking City episode im watching right now
@@aspinnycracker Haha, yeah I made a regular habit of being in the comments since a little after Booty Bay and I think some point into the Cities Skylines days. Here's to a solid weekend!
I have the vaguest memories of this toy soldier game that had a magnifying glass going around that would melt them. I don't know if that was some weird dream I had once or a game we had on our computer that I could never find.
@@Pancakeli that sounds like Army Men: RTS, it was a spinoff of the mainline games. There's a radio operator unit that let's you call in support powers like a giant magnifying glass. It's on Steam now, I replayed it a couple years ago and while it's kinda janky it's still very fun and nostalgic, good stuff.
@@cn6891 Those were the ones that would spontaneously dive and surface if you filled a little chapter inside with baking soda or something, weren't they?
Stupid little comment but I love that the "rocket launcher" launches... missiles For thoses who don't know the difference rockets can't track/home so they're good against stationary or slow moving targets, they can't really turn or anything like that. Missiles however have guidance systems which allow them to turn and track targets.
the instrumental in the song at the end is right out of "hello muddah hello fadduh" by Allan Sherman. so glad I recognised it right away or that would have driven me crazy
This is such a cute game, and clearly has a lot of heart in it. It's a very refreshing take on things, and I really love how "low-stakes" and relaxing it is!
This made me think back to playing Army Men 2. I wish that game had a remake. But this seems to be a very nice alternative to give a spin instead. It has a wonderful art style and it seems nice and casual.
this reminds me of a series of video games where you played as same basic green plastic army men and against these tan plastic army men, there was like 3 or 4 games in total I believe
I'm wondering if this 'Kevin' kid moves to the US and changes his name to Sid in a few years, judging by the ducks and sharky... and ripping a new tory in half...
Actually, that's a good question. Do kids drink tea in the UK at a young age? I guess it depends on the caffeine content...idk? I boil my water in the microwave.
Love those game, altho this game much pretty, I prefer older "toy soldiers", it was a tower defence too, but much more complicated, you could make units and possess them, amazing game :)
Daily reminder that Tom is an amazing person and to thank him for all he has done/will do - Day 1745 Oh this is a very fun little game. I very much do enjoy tower defence games, and the setting of this one is really cool. Also, banger menu song, reminds me of the really good Goblin Cleanup menu song. I will say though, why didn't they ryhm 'alive' with 'survive' damn you XD You can pet the cat, 10/10 game Ok, American Mug and Plugs in Bathroom, English kid and mum and European plugs, where the heck does this take place XD Ah yes, the classic Propeller Manoevre, a winner 'Damn' and 'Hell', this kid has quite the vocabulary. Although, the Scare Face reference isn't too out of place as I feel that film, and espesually that quote/scene, is so much in the public eye that everyone knows it I do hope we get to see more indeed :D
Let's hope they add more music. Because holy shit did that become repetitive in the first 90 seconds... Pretty cool otherwise. Not complicated. Little nuance. But at least the mechanics make some sense and the units have some sort of balance.
I wonder what country this is from; besides some grammer issues, the English is really inconsistent between American and British. Very charming game though!
Funny re use of an old song, with a few discordant piano notes thrown in to try to fool the people listening. Then again, maybe the music i know is older then the song i know.

Tom missing a core mechanic?! Unimaginable.
I was wondering what the left bar was for

Tom: yeah yeah survive the waves to win

I was surprised by the Big Daddy reference
Glad to see Ben getting more screen time in video games.

With no reflection in the mirror... .. .
I'd love to see more! Such a cool game, even for early access!

I did not expect a reign of fire reference in 2024
Fun aesthetic, not sure on the gameplay but I like the concept a lot
BAM! TD games are my JAM!
This brought back memories of Toy Soldiers the game
That song.... Is fantasic
That's quite a theme song.
The ponies with Wings and Horns are called Alicorns
wow the visuals are great!
Love the animation style with its appropriate child-like plonking-down of items 💫🤌🏻

Surely Reign of Fire is not that niche of a film, right? Lots of people bring it up for how realistic the dragons look etc.
As a member of the royal corp of signals.

Mention reign of fire but wrong scene. Scuba Steve and octobull is even more like the man with the fire axe who dives straight into the dragons mouth
Doesa anybody remember the toy soldiers games on the Xbox arcade? this reminds me of that.

If the horse has both pegasus wings and a unicorn horn then it's called an alicorn.

Oh man now I want to play Toy Soldiers. That was a really good tower defense. Auto battler?
Very nostalgic, cute even, but the voice acting, while selling the idea of what's going on, is a bit much.
"All the counselors hate the waiters

I would describe the aesthetics of this game as cloying.
Though seeing the kid rip his toy in half before playing with electrical sockets... does this game go dark?
Hmmm... TD games are pretty cool but I'm already sick of the kids voice at the 1 minute mark
Welp have to give this one a pass at 3 minutes in. Liking and commenting and all that though.
