Man, Logger Wade is sharp. Operator, Trucker, Mechanic, Mill operator, Saw Man... List goes on. I really am genuinely impressed. Folks like that don't seem to be as common anymore. I really enjoyed this video. Thanks

Back in the '70s I worked at an Army supply & maintenance depot in California. The Superintendent of the Supply operations talked and walked as fast as Wade. Extremely knowledgeable about all the different processes in each building as well as for each product line. Each building, we had eight of them, was 1/4 mile long and three stories tall by 500 yards wide, in other words HUGE.

We go to the Home Depot/Lowes/Lumber yard and take it for granted that we can buy anything we want in lumber. We have no idea just what it takes to get it there. This video is a real journey from standing trees to finished lumber. As a kid we used to go up to northern Alberta to visit my fathers family and there was and still is a major lumber mill there. Just about all of dad's relatives an other people in the small town worked for the mill or out in the forest cutting timber. Most of the homes were owned by the company. It was always a treat to go to the mill and watch how all the processes worked. Of course 60 years ago, there was no automation so a lot of the work was preformed by people and lots of them. All lumber went out by rail and the mill was the reason the railroad was built. The mill is still operating today, totally automated and is now owned by a multi national corp. but back then, it was privately owned up until the mid 60's.
Great memories from childhood for me. Great video Chris.

I was so impressed with the set-up and efficiency I watched it a second time. I even sent my younger brother in Sydney a link. We have both been builders by trade for some 40 years. My daddy was also in the trade since the mid 50's working heavy construction on power stations, bridges and dams/pumping stations and the like so younger brother and I learnt all that too. If that mill was in Australia it would be one of the industry leaders. Here good saw logs are getting sent to the chipers and sent to China for paper. All for a quick buck. It is disappointing to see. It is refreshing to see efficiency young man.

Thank you Chris and Wade for the guided tour. I found it very informative. One thing I noticed that might be worth mentioning is the use of explosion proof lighting fixtures throughout the complex. Obviously this operation generates lots of airborne dust, which in the critical concentration levels can be explosive enough to destroy the entire building and cause grave injury. I would imagine sawmill operations must meet the same dust abatement and explosion protection standards as grain elevators and cereal mills.
That is a fine upstanding and outstanding family running that business.

I can't believe there is that much that goes into making lumber. THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR TIME AND EFFORT.

Thanks for taking us along on your log to lumber adventure. There's more to it than my head can wrap itself around, but what fun to hear how it all works!

My dad was a sawfiler in Oregon and California from 1940's till he died in the 80's. Seeing the filing room really brought back memories from long ago. All the stuff done to the band saws was done by hand, no lasers or computers. Many of the logs cut in the mill were 3 to 6' diameter. 2 foot logs were small

Thank you Chris , that was awesome ! No disrespect to you ,because I know you’re a go getter, but can you imagine being Wade !
Rumor has it that Chuck Norris was scheduled to do this video ,but when it came down to he was too intimidated to work with Wade for that long !!

Love it, Been a carpenter all my life, from Endeavor Yachts (32'-37'-45') age 15-18 to High rise 42 story structures, to high end homes. Cabinetry, and everything in between.
It's too bad I didn't spend some time in a mill!
