Y'know, I also read my King James for the language. It's literary, and that makes it inspiring to a never-was Christian (though my parents were raised in the Anglican faith.) O'Toole was one of the most literate actors of his era. Anyone with poetry in their soul responds to great literature.
I don't give a f***ing damn that Peter O'Toole used to be a raging alcoholic and a party animal in his earlier years, he's one of the best actors I've ever had the pleasure of viewing. Me or anyone. A god among men.
He wasn't an alcoholic, just a heavy drinker. The reason he quit drinking was firstly because of the cancer that caused him to loose part of his stomach and his pancreas i believe, but also because he said he didn't want to become addicted to alcohol like many of his friends. He barely drank any alcohol after his operation in the mid 70s, but would still appear of chat shows where he somewhat convincingly faked being drunk despite being completely sober. Sorry for being nit-picking, its just i don't like the way he's lumped together with people like Richard Harris and Richard Burton as an alcoholic - they were, he wasn't. The key difference being that he drank a lot out of choice, whereas they drank colossol amounts becuase they were addicted to alcohol. Even when he was geniunely heavy drinker, as you say in his early years, he would still be partial to pretending to be drunk when he hadn't had a drop according to people that knew him at the time. For some reason, probably insecurity, he spent his whole life cultivating an image of being an out of control drunk, with the effect that people believe he drank more than he actually did. As robert sellers, who wrote about o'toole along with burton, harris and reed as hellraisers said, "Of the four men o'toole is the only one still alive, probably because he drank less than the other three."
I love him. And understand what he meant about Retired. I have several Bibles my Father left when he passed away. I value them because they belonged to him all from different clergy and his old friends. I was told by him take the best of the truth and leave the rest behind that's just life. Don't beat yourself or other over the head with it. Freedom to choose and do your best.
Saw the interview the other night... wish Charlie Rose would do less talking and let Peter O'Toole speak more! However, always amazing to see Peter O'Toole!
Indeed :) On a sidenote, It amazes me how little views these videos get. They're quite interesting to me (as a non-american) and I would think more people would be interested in them.
Charlie Rose...what happened to his eye?? Anyway, I feel he really sometimes misses the point of an individuals identity. Who they are, why they say what they say etc and his question miss the mark. I prefer Bill Moyer.
Rose had a choice to make when he tripped on a 59th street pothole in New York City: protect his newly purchased MacBook Air, or his face - he chose the former. According to his producers, "The Macbook Air is fine, he showed us the blood stains on it this morning."
@thestick52 No, because he was born in Southern Ireland. He is not British, but I would have thought he would have been made an Honorary Knight. Maybe he turned it down? You must Know The Irish Hate the English (Well the south part do) I am Welsh so I am ok LOL

Well the Church of England is spiritual but the foreign invasion of England is so much more spiritual that I denial that England has any chance of survival. That is Tibet, India and other Groups.
he has one of the most beautiful voices in the world
Great voice. Great accent. Great Actor. Thanks for sharing.
Just wondering how Charlie got that tough looking shiner?
Brilliant Peter! Brilliant.
Theater is at its fundamental level human speech as an art form. Bravo.

he is amazing in troy, he's a good actor; nothing more nothing less :)

No rational person would give a damn

I was thinking the same thing. I've been subscribed for a while and enjoy all the interviews he conducts.
He did win an Oscar for outstanding contribution (one of those lifetime achievement ones- he was nominated 8 times for acting though.
Where'd Charley get the shiner? From one of his girlfriends?
Indeed :)

0:10 I’m the same as Peter, still believe in God but don’t really go to church anymore. Also a Retired Christian
What's with the black eye, Charlie? Did you ask a question that pissed-off guest?
@84ccipollini that is true he did a good job in Caligula
It was nice of Peter to not bring up Charlie's black eye
@drabgabby He had some kind of surgery that caused his eye to become black temporarily.
@meinLiebsterFeind
THNK YOU! Most people look at me like I'm diseased when i sy it's a good movie!

He brought up Caligula.
@JonathanBorgogelli, I beg your pardon but, is he a knight? As far as I know, he isn't. Please, follow up... Thanks.
Does he have a black eye?

Correct he is Irish. He was actually born in Conamarra in the west of Ireland
@JonathanBorgogelli It's kinda tragic he hasn't been knighted yet, either.
The Lion in Winter. One of my favs. EVER.
And Caligula. Give him credit. Yes it's pratically porn, but he acted well in it.
@martythetickler According to Wiki, he's resisted it for years for political reasons.
R.Burns
