Thank you for your professional perspective. I have read Making Number Talks Matter and have watched numerous videos of number talks. Your video--Building Numerical Reasoning--provided another source and a level of confidence needed to implement number talks with my 3rd and 4th graders this year. It would be great to have a list of strategies with an example for each (a "cheat sheet") of strategies that I can use as to plan purposeful problems and create an overall year-long strategy based on our curriculum map. If you or any of your viewers have an idea of where to find this type of resource, please share. Thanks again for the great supports for our students and classroom teachers.
If you get Sherry's Number Talks book, the strings of problems are arranged by strategy and each strategy is clearly explained. As for a year-long Number Talks plan, the state of Georgia did a nice job of placing Number Talks throughout their units in appropriate places. You could use that as a starting point to place in your units. I had the pleasure of learning with Sherry in Doha, Qatar a few years back, and she is masterful and just an amazing sweet person as well. They are not efficient methods.
people who could easily follow those rules are people who had problems with traditional math.
Please try to teach kids the right way to do math and avoid so many mistakes.
