  • I've spent the last few days on holiday on the island of Great Exuma in the Bahamas. While I was there I noticed a side to the Bahamas that you don't really see on people's socials when they go on holiday. A lot of abandoned stuff.

I have stayed on Andros, Eleuthera and Exuma, the latter at a great little Augusta Bay resort a stone's throw from the sadly abandoned "cartel" place. In many cases, cash flow is the main issue, and construction materials are a challenge due to everything having to be imported. Also, many property owners, when they run out of cash, simply down tools until they can afford the next phase. But the Out Islands folk generally the friendliest this Canadian has encountered there as well as in Barbados and Antigua.

I think in the most part people care, they just don’t have the resources or funding to remove and clear a lot of that stuff. We live in the British Virgin Islands and sat through cat 5 hurricane Irma 200+ mph wind, 4 years later there’s still abandoned stuff everywhere. In the Caribbean there is a large disparity of wealth it is what is sadly 🌴

Nice video Lucy. This is typical for a lot of places. The tourist areas are always well kept and clean. Other examples that I have personally seen are Puerto Rico and Dom Rep. Once your away from the main tourist stream area you see the reality of how a lot of the local people live.

I lived in Cyprus for a while back in 2004 and it was a similar story there. Hotels, apartment buildings and holiday complexes that were half finished and abandoned because money ran out or interest was lacking in the specific location. Slightly off the beaten track from the "touristy" areas, so most will have never seen it!

Nice one Lucy! We see similar things here in China, especially where buildings are concerned. The reasons are varied but could include the death of the original owner, imprisonment as you mentioned, cash flow problems etc. It is sad to see but somehow I get perverse pleasure out of seeing nature reclaim everything.

Thanks Lucy! It's good to see this side of a place that people don't see because the focus is usually on the beautiful or touristic side of a place like The Bahamas. I can see you're not trying to paint a negative picture of The Bahamas in this video, even though it's sad that these things happen; you're showing us this other side of The Bahamas does exist. A great example is Indigo Traveller, a TH-camr from New Zealand, who visits some of the least visited places on Earth (Libya most recently). In his videos, he aims to show all sides of a place he visits, whether it has a good or bad reputation in the media. I hope to see more videos like this from you 👌

Well hey even with the sadness of the abandoned stuff. Maybe for drive tribe you could take some of those back. If you find a cool car or so you could take it home. Give it new life and end the abandonment of even one object. That would be really fun to see.
