    Add a little bit of sugarwater with a bright foodcolouring (blue?) at the bottom of the beam, this will do two things: increase the ant traffic, making the antroad easier to follow and make their gasters colour up which might make them easier to spot but also, it's just cute. then you can see if they are foraging for food upstairs or getting food first and then going up (home) which could help you locate the nest

      Then add borax to the water, and they will take it back to the nest in the wall, and it will kill the entire thing. That way no ant nests in the walls.

      If you find a nest or if you don't & want to stop them from going that way, rub/spray some dish soap in the path they travel. The soap breaks up the scent trail they leave for other ants to follow & also affects their bodies. It will not last long but the will not cross the barrier.

    My guess is the ants nest is in the upper wall or in the roof. I think calling the pest control technician is the best option. Not only to get rid off the last ants, but also to prevent they are not coming back in the future. Ants like clay, moisture and wood. So you can be sure they are coming back at some point in the future. Keep up the good work!

      Where I live we had ice dams along the eaves/gutters in a heavily shaded area. Ants had a field day there, and had a nest in the roof sheathing! I saw the queen and everything. Somehow it stayed just warm enough in that area they could live there year round under 2 layers of asphalt shingles.

      The ants follow the smell from where they are usually walking, they follow the same paths over and over....and if there are ants,- there probably is a "nest" in what's left of the house! Use that stuff you used the first time...( here it is called Nippon) when they eat/drink it they get a kind of "plague" witch is contagious and then they take that with them back to the nest so that they all die.

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I'm fairly certian the visible boards aren't the upstairs floorboards but inserted between the joists to hold sand, grit or clay that serves as sound deadening. In the UK this is known as ash deafening I think. The downside is that the fill is likely to keep sifting down through the cracks between the boards so you need to cover those from below if you want to keep the joists exposed. You can see the battens nailed to the sides of each joist to support those infill boards.

    Hey Laura. You can nail reed mats into the ceiling areas between the beams, with or without insulation (I used hemp wool and sheaves) above it. Then use clay for the finish. This will help protect your wooden ceiling from further rot, can easily be painted white with clay color AND, well you know the advantages of clay for the climate in the room. ;)

While it IS indeed very cumbersome to fill the ceiling with that stuff from below, it insulates from sound even better than from heat. Though yes, I personally would prefer to temporarily remove the floor boards, do a lot of the ceiling work (including half of the clay work from the second floor, THEN fill in the sound insulation mixture, and finally reapply the floorboards. Much more convenient to do it that way. ;)
      My garden shed is roughly 50m away from one of the busiest railway lines in Germany. And while I can clearly hear the trains, that's mostly due to the old recycled windows, not the floor (less than 20cm LLS200 caked between two thin layers of wood, all standing on metal screws 30-40cm above the ground).

You need to bring the building down to its core. This will give you a clean slate to make it what you need it to be. If I had realized this sooner, things would have gone faster. Even though my plan was close to core, I wasted time realizing I had to go all the way.

    Also...ants come up from the ground. They are probably looking for another board to make a nest in...a little peppermint oil, or ammonia diluted in water, and sprayed around your foundation will deter the ants. They don't like the smell... You have to respray after rain.. I love what you are doing with this beautiful house! Keep your chin up... slow and steady wins the race... it helps to just focus on today's singular goal, and not the whole project... 🤗😘🤗

    1:15 what you said reminded me about a knitting/crochet concept about whether you are a “process knitter” or a “finished object knitter”. A “process knitter” gets enjoyment from the process and a “finished object knitter gets enjoyment from the finished object. Both are ok but when you are doing something that is meant to make you happy it’s important to remember/realize which one you are to keep going when things get tough. I’ve found this whole series so interesting and I’m glad that you are giving this house a second chance ❤

    I agree with one of the comments, you should call a insect repellent company to see where they are and to get rid of them. I bought a house built in 1915, and black ants ate my porch and beams. I had to replace everything. I then had a exterminator come and spray to prevent it from happening again. I love what you are doing for your house and can't wait to see it finished.

    I think the idea of having the beams visible is a fantastic idea and will be a real feature throughout your house especially mixed with a flat white ceiling between. In fact I think it will be less work for you as you may ave more trim to fit but much less overhead joint filling/sealing. A quick sand with a belt sander and then sealing with a wood oil is all that the beams will need (after removing all the nails of course....:)

    Laura, get a hold of some borax ( borfritte in German I think) and sprinkle it along the ant trail. The ants love it and will take it back to the main colony and kill them all at the source including the queen. This prevents them from taking the eggs and queen to a new location within your lovely Lise Lotte. Good luck. :)

    Hello Laura!, I love your positivity, and confidence to keep forward to the goal. I think you need to understand the ants better now on.
    They *always* bring the food to their nest. So you could leave ant food in the way (depending of the ant type could be leaves, bread crumbs, or jam) and see where they carry to. If you need to uncover a certain area, you should doit, wait a cupple of hours (in order to let they calm down) and keep follow them till the nest.
    The ants can't do real damage to the wood, they normally take soften media (like roten wood) and make a room in there. but they doesn't have the strength to carve wood (termites do, but they don't coexist togheter with ants)
    If you just need to get rid of the colony, you could prepare a mix of 10% boric acid (borax) tho any kind of food that they take, and leave on reach of them. Wait for two days, Yo may had repeat this process the next week, but I garantee you, this method works.
    I hope you can made your dreamhouse someday soon. Best wishes

    Smudo's eyes at the beginning say it all ...
    Meditation and workout - that's the best of the best of the best with DIY, IMO.
    You could paint water glass over all the work before laying the mud bricks. After that, even if there still are ants somewhere, they'll die out - sodium or potassium silicate and ants don't mix.

    • @michellebyrom6551
      @michellebyrom6551 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wouldn't that seal the wood and prevent it breathing?

    • @a0flj0
      @a0flj0 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michellebyrom6551 No. Water glass doesn't close the pores. It soaks into the wood, then the water dries out and the salts form a microscopically thin hard layer on the wood fibers, but that layer is too thin to close the pores. It does change the properties of the wood, though. The surface becomes much harder (you need to drill all your holes and do all your cuts before water glass unless you want your tools to become dull in no time) and paint doesn't stick properly to it anymore (it's designed to stick to wood, not to solidified salts).
      The pores being still open, water vapors can travel freely through the wood, which means moisture won't stay in the wood - as long as the wood is not directly exposed to liquid water. Silicates are difficult to dissolve, once dried, which is why water leaching over the wood once in a blue moon won't do much harm either. However, if the wood is directly exposed to rain or other flowing water, the silicates _will_ eventually dissolve, and leave the wood unprotected.
      Laura's problem isn't with exposed wood. She didn't find ants on any exposed surface, ants only nested under the plaster. Once the house is done right, chances of water flowing over the plaster-covered surfaces are zero, and she will be able to refinish the exposed surfaces any time she likes with whatever finishing she wants - and for exposed wood peridic refinishing is a must. And it should definitely be something else than water glass, since water glass doesn't protect from U radiation.
